Rain
Chapter 22: Confessions and Letters

Vicious smiled arrogantly. She loved him. It wasn’t like he couldn’t tell. Even with a woman like Sith, he knew when someone had feelings for him. “You’re point?” he asked as he slithered behind her, grasping her forearms and slamming her into his chest.

She couldn’t speak, he could see the blatant shock in her eyes. She had been becoming impassioned during the conversation, and now her other self was completely bare. Her eyes no longer cold as stone, no, now they were alive, the color of coal before it went up in flames. Softly, he brushed her crimson locks over one shoulder, revealing the other. He gently bent his head, burying it in her shoulder as he took in her scent. She didn’t smell flowery, like some women, she couldn’t, not just because she was an assassin, but because she was unique, she was Sith.

“You smell of smoke and blood tonight,” he whispered hoarsely.

She seemed to be having another inner conflict, before she shuddered under his touch. He smiled again. He had always had that effect on women. Well, not every woman, but that wasn’t the point. Tonight, he wanted, no, he needed Sith. She’d saved his life, and by his rules, he needed to thank her.

Vicious raised his head, before spinning her around in his arms to face him. She was trying to find the words, but could not seem to find them. Vicious grinned, this was different, not the smile that he sent to his beloved Rain, not the lust filled one that he had given Sith that first night, no, this one conveyed it all: his gratitude for her, not just for her saving his life, that was in there, but for it all. For just being there when he could have lost his mind, for being the cold hard rock that she was, for just standing there before him right at that moment. Then he said it, three words that were far more important than anything else.

“I trust you,” he said with a gentleness that he reserved for Rain.

Sith froze, her eyes wide now with shock. Vicious smiled again, before crushing his lips to hers, hoping to god she’d kiss back like he needed her too.

Rain sighed heavily as she leaned back in her chair. It had been a few weeks since she’d come back, and already she had an office on the top floor of the syndicate building and a penthouse apartment uptown. Everything she had was provided now. She had a doctor on her beck and call, droves of servaand and bodyguards, none of whom she trusted, and she had a c-section scheduled in a few months. She was with a ess ess trainer every day, keeping her body in shape for when she came out. Came out, it sounded like something a southern belle would do. Rain snorted. Everything had been set up, she was Rain Deacon now, she had birth certificate, social security and other documents to prove it. Marissa Blake, aka. Eve the Crimson Dragon, no longer existed. Rain felt sad, maybe is ths the pregnant hormones, maybe it was the fact that her identity was gone, she didn’t care, she was just sad. Not to mention that she wasn’t going to get any work done.

Quickly, she was on her feet, and out the door, flanked by her bodyguards. Rain didn’t like them, didn’t trust them. She probably would feel safer with a gun on her own. But Rain Deacon was an up and coming syndicate member, she only needed a small handgun and only when her bodyguards were killed. Rain smiled slightly. She was still Rain, bounty hunter and ex-member of the Bebop crew, she’d never let the Van change that. So, she was still known for her quick wit and use of a gun. She was still infamous in the criminal circles. She still had a small piece of her old life. She searched the area around herself as she waited for her car. Her idiot bodyguards had a tendency to be… well idiots and overlook areas.

It was then that Rain spotted him. He looked harmless enough, but after her long years of being not only a syndicate girl, but as a bounty hunter, looks weren’t everything. He was leaning against the side of a building, concealing his handgun in his jacket pocket. Rain smiled. He thought he was going to get points from his boss by taking out the new golden child of the Red Dragons. Man, was he mistaken. In a matter of moments, he swung his gun out, pointing it straight at her and fired. Rain easily side stepped it and it hit the pavement, causing her ‘bodyguards’ to scramble about and pretend to do something. The man aimed again, but before he could pull the trigger, Rain had her gun out and had fired off two shots into his head and gut. Her grey eyes a pale, silver color as she lowered her smoking gun and stowed it back in her purse.

She then looked to her bodyguards as the car pulled up and snorted. “Hn, I’m going to request some competent help from the Van, you idiots are fired,” she said in a growl as she slammed her car door shut and the black limo pulled away.

Faye sd asd as she looked over her mail. Rain had written her. She’d been writing for weeks now, albeit secretly, to Faye. She talked about the new places she’d seen , where she was living, what she was doing. To Faye’s surprise, she was living it up as the next in command for the Red Dragons. She had a penthouse apartment and a corner office on a top floor. She was ‘living la vida loca’ as that stupid, old earth song that Ed listened to would say.

Faye would write back in return, telling her about how boring life was without her being around to argue with, or share grooming tips. She wrote about how horrible Jet’s cooking was, how she missed Rain’s gourmet expertise, and how she was scared about her own oncoming bundle of joy. She wrote how Spike had reacted to becoming a father, how Jet was being so supportive, like a big brother, and how Ed was excited about having another mind to twist. Mostly, though, Faye wrote to each other about how she missed Rain being there. Rain, of course said that she couldn’t come back, not just because of what the guys had said, but because of her new obligations. Rain was nothing, if not dedicated.

Faye sighed as she opened her newest letter.

*Dear Faye,

Hey, how you been? I know I haven’t written in a while, but I’ve been totally swamped with paperwork. Note of reminder: never go into the business of running a syndicate, it’s more complicated than running a multinational corporation. Anyways, how are things on the Bebop? Is Spike still being an asshole? I can order someone to fix that you know. God, that sounds so weird to me. I can tell these people what to do and they have to follow my orders as though they’re from the Van. It’s really screwed up.

How’s everything with you? Have you found out anything on your baby yet? I want to know as soon as you find out. I’m going to spoil that kid rotten. I found out that my own little bundle of joy is a girl. Man, us as mothers, how fucked up is that? It’s almost insane to think that. I mean, I don’t think I’m cut out for motherhood, and be honest, Faye, you don’t think that you are either. But here we are, mothers to be.

Man, is that the time? Sorry, chica, but I have to finish this up, I have much to do and too little time to do it in. Man, I thought those words would never come from me. Send my love to the guys and a kick in the shins to Spike if he’s still being an ungrateful ass. Keep yourself safe and write back soon.

Much love,
Rain Deacon

P.S. Hey, notice the last name? It’s freaky isn’t it?*

Faye laughed out loud as she finished the letter. It was at the time that Spike entered the room.

“What’s so funny?” he asked as he took a seat next to Faye.

“Rain wrote another letter,” Faye said as she handed him the piece of paper.

Spike scanned the words, his eyes growing large as he read. “She’s going to be syndicate leader?”

Faye nodded. “Yeah, seems the only place she could go was back there.”

His eyes softened. “And she’s hg a g a girl.”

“Yeah, only two more months,” she sighed. Faye then got a mischevious glint in her eye and kicked Spike in the shin.

“AH! Hey, what the hell was that for?!” he shouted.

“Rain said to kick you.”

Spike scowled and scanned the letter for those words. He then handed the letter back to Faye and pouted, grumbling under his breath.

“You two fighting again?” Jet asked as he entered the room from the kitchen.

Faye smiled. “No, Spike’s just mad that Rain told me to kick him in the shins.”

“When’d she say that?”

“In the letter she sent. I just got it today.”

Jet froze. “She sent another?”

“Yeah, she says that she sends her love and that she’s having a girl,” Faye said as she stood and left the room.

Jet stood dumbfounded. “So, she’s been writing Faye?”

Spike nodded. “I think she’s still mad at us.”

Jet sighed and turned. “I guess so,” he said softly as he wandered back into the kitchen to make dinner.
