Chapter 23: Gains and Losses

Rain smiled softly as she gazed down at the sleeping infant in the cradle next to her. The child was beautiful, pale golden hair and a pair of pale blue eyes that stared with a starry wonder at the world around her. Rain had named her Aurora, since she reminded her of the first light of dawn and the pale blue of the sky that comes when the sun starts to rise. She was also a new life, a beautiful new life. Rain felt warm and fuzzy inside as she watched her daughter sleep. She was two months old now, and a light in her life. Rain wanted to give her the world, make sure she never had the life that Rain herself had experienced. It was at these times that she wondered. Had he looked this innocent before? What had led him to the life he had now? She sighed as she caught herself. She was thinking of Vicious again. She was catching herself doing that a lot. Funny thing was, she wasn’t disturbed or disgusted with herself. It was as if… as if…

“Oh, that’s just ridiculous!” she said out loud.

“Ms. Deacon, the limo is waiting,” a soft male voice intruded.

Rain turned to see one of her servants, Rodger, waiting at the door. He and a few other people worked in her apartment and helped take care of Aurora so Rain could enjoy the high life. Well, as much as one could enjoy being trotted around like a trained poodle for the paparazzi. Rain sighed and cast one last long look of love at her daughter before standing and starting for the door.

The flashes went off like fireworks, Rain could hardly see. She smiled, nonetheless, and kept walking on down the red carpet. The young man on her arm she didn’t know, nor did she care, who he was. She continued to smile and nod as she walked down the carpet, keeping up her happy façade before she heard them. Three shots rang out in the air. One hitting the man she was holding onto. She still couldn’t serougrough the flashing lights, but she knew who they were aiming for. She cursed silently as she noticed that her bodyguards looked clueless once again.

‘Seriously, could they be any more incompetent. If I was with Sith or even Vicious or any of the others, I’d at least know that I’d be safe. The Van and I are having a long talk after this!’ she screamed mentally as she pulled out a hidden handgun from her handbag. ‘Never leave home without it,’ she joked as she fired off towards the origin of the shots.

She must have missed, because the shooter was suddenly behind her. He wasn’t ugly, but he wasn’t handsome either. He looked normal, but, of course, the most deadly of assassins look normal. He smiled and pistol whipped her, sending her to the ground. He then tossed her gun aside and knelt on top of her, his grin still in place.

‘Where the fuck are my bodyguards? Oh, they are sooo fired after this!’ she shouted mentally.

“No offense, but I prefer to see their faces before they die,” the guy said as he thrust the barrel of his handgun onto her chest.

Rain scowled and then punched the guy in the face, sending him sprawling. “Do you have any fucking clue who I am?”

“You’re the new syndicate golden child. You’re a target, no big.”

Rain rolled her eyes as she kicked the guy in the jewels and then stepped on his wrist, forcing him to release his grip on his gun. “Did you do no background check, honey?” she asked. She then kneeled down and picked up his gun and shoved it in his mouth, a maniacal grin on her face. “If you were good, you’d know that you were sent to hunt the presumably dead Crimson Dragon. Too bad you didn’t,” she teased, watching his eyes bulge in shock before squeezing the trigger and splattering his brains across the red carpet.

Rain slowly stood, checking to see that, yes, she wasn’t covered in assassin bits. She smiled. After all her years she still had it. She then turned to the still flashing cameras and smiled confidently.

“What the fuck?!” Spike exclaimed.

Jet looked over his partner’s shoulder only to have his own eyes bug out of his skull. There, on the cover of a magazine was Rain, dressed in a black, evening gown, a gun in her hand, the barrel dripping with blood, and a partially headless male body. The words in bold under her picture, “Rain Deacon saves herself from deadly assassin.”

“Looks like she’s been busy,” Jet said.

“Man, she looks good,” Spike mumbled.

Jet scowled at his young friend before slapping him in the back of the head. “Horney bastard!”

Spike pouted and glared at Jet before turning back to the magazine. “Like you weren’t thinking it.”

Rain tapped her foot impatiently as she stood before the Van. “Well?” she asked.

“We have considered your request,” the first started.

“And?” she urged.

“We believe it to be wiser for someone more on your level of expertise to be assigned to you as a bodyguard,” the second finished.

“Who do you suggest? There aren’t manat aat are at my level,” Rain said arrogantly.

“Insolence will not be tolerated, Rain. Your arrogance is not needed in our presence. Remember where it got you last time,” The third warned.

Rain changed her posture and nodded, a solemn look on her face. “Of course. I apologize.”

The Van nodded simultaneously. “We understand. As for a bodyguard, we suggest Sith to be reassigned to you from Vicious.”

Rain froze. “May I enquire as to his status as of late?” she asked softly.

“He is fair, but his arrogance annoys us greatly,” the third answered.

Rain nodded. “I see. Send Sith as soon as you see fit. I have no engagements until three weeks from now. Anytime before then is satisfactory.”

“We shall send her as soon as possible. Give our love to your precious child,” the second bid.

Rain smiled. “I shall,” she said as she turned and left the room.

Vicious sighed and rolled his neck as he entered the apartment. He spotted Sith on her usual perch on the fire escape. Even from across the room, he could sense that she was tense. Softly, he moved towards her and stepped up behind her, wrapping his arms about her shoulders and pulling her into an embrace.

“What’s bothering you?” he asked softly.

Sith stiffened, confusing him greatly. She’d been getting so much br atr at relaxing around him. Well, as relaxed as she could be. He furrowed his brow and turned her around, his pale eyes scanning her dark orbs. She was hiding something, usually she just said everything out loud, it was easier that way, it was a trait that reminded him of Rain. She must have been terribly troubled by it to seem so distant in his arms.

“What is it?” he asked again.

Sith seemed to want to run away, much like she used to before she really accepted things. He hardened his grip, probably bruising her pale flesh as he did so. Not that he hadn’t bruised her before, she was rough in bed and he wasn’t any different. But tonight he was worried. What had scared her so? What could scare her?

“I’ve been reassigned,” she spoke softly, as though she had yet to accept it herself.

His eyes widened. “What?” he asked, his voice harsher.

“The Van had reassigned me.”

“Why? To who?”

“Rain.”

Vicious froze. That one name explained it all. Rain was public now, she’d need the best, Sith was the best. Rain had problems trusting people, she trusted Sith. And now that Sith was finally his, now that he could truly say that he loved her, not as much as he did Rain, but could admit to himself that he loved her, the Van would take her away. Not only that, but send her to the one person that mattered more than life itself to him. Send her to the other person that was taken from him. His eyes went downcast, dead.

“I see,” he managed to get out, his voice laden with anger and grief.

“Vicious,” she said, it was all she needed to say.

“When?” he asked.

“Tomorrow.”

Vicious smiled, his eyes filled with a kind of sadness that only one that had lost everything as he had could. “Then we have tonight.”

~*~*~*~

Vicious kept his eyes locked with hers as he slowly thrust himself inside her body. He wanted tonight to last in her memory. Everything he’d done was filled with the love that he had for her now, and the regret that he hadn’t said it out loud. He didn’t need to. He felt her body shake and writhe as she neared her climax. A soft smile crept across his face as he watched her eyes close tightly as her body squeezed around his manhood, her nails digging into his back as her warmth flooded his senses. He then let himself go and fell along with her into that darkness where no one is afraid and alone, the darkness of ecstasy.

“I love you, Sith,” he whispered softly as he caressed her face and his eyes closed, dragging him into that warm darkness of sleep.
