Law and Right

Chapter 23: Deception

~!~!~!~!~!~

The new base Mello had spoken of turned out to be a church, somewhere near Nagano. They pulled in and Light was taken in, locked in a closet while the other two set up. An hour later, he was brought out and cuffed to a long chain that was bolted to the floor of a small room that had once been used for Sunday School or something similar.

There was a futon, a bathroom nearby, everything he needed to live in relative comfort. He settled into a chair when he was left to himself, his gaze following Ryuk through one of the doorways. Occasionally, his gaze would lock with Mello's, then return to the shinigami.

The conversation between the three of them was light and absent, nothing significant passing between them.

"We need to focus on where they are now," Ryuzaki said firmly. "We know what direction they headed in, and it's probable that they'll leave the city."

"We also know that Mello has no Watari and is traveling with Matt. They are armed and highly dangerous," Near added quietly, tugging at his hair. "They are holding Toshio-kun hostage and will not be above killing him if they believe it will help them escape."

"It is highly probable that they caused the accident that Yagami-san was in. They knew his name and saw his face, it is possible that they know all of you, as well, so we will take precautions to hide your faces as much as possible," Ryuzaki frowned deeply.

"They already know my name and face. If I die, it is their doing," Near said clearly. "They have avoided doing so thus far to avoid detection. Mello put his own name onto the test lists to cast suspicion onto me and is aware that every member of this task force has seen his real name."

"Including Toshio-kun," Ryuzaki said firmly, his gaze slowly sliding over all of them. "This is probably why he chose to kidnap Toshio-kun rather than Yagami-san."

"Let's find Mello and put an end to this," Near said, tugging on his hair and narrowing his eyes in thought. He went to a computer and began working, relaying information to his Watari throughout the day.

The days slid by and Yagami Soichiro remained in a coma, wife and daughter by his side, hoping and praying for the best.

Light spent much of his time speaking with Matt and Mello about their plans, about how to handle the confrontation when the time came. They spoke carefully, planned carefully, and Light kept a very close eye on Ryuk.

Near spoke frequently with his Watari and they searched tirelessly for Mello, Matt and Light.

It had been nearly two weeks when Sayu came rushing to the building, calling up with urgent news.

She was let up, and pulled a small pile of pictures from her purse, shoved them into Ryuzaki's hands. "These were on display at an art gallery on campus. A senior project from one of my sempai," she was breathless. "You're both on there. You and my brother, and... and some kid."

Ryuzaki took the pictures, looked through them and frowned deeply. "Thank you, Sayu-san," he said softly. "Please, give me the name of the artist."

Sayu did, blowing out a breath. "She's really very good. It doesn't have a good look at your faces, but... I thought it was important. If anyone realizes..."

"You did just fine, Sayu. I'll take care of it, so you needn't worry," Ryuzaki said softly.

"Hey... where is he, anyway?" she looked around.

"He's on an errand at the moment," Ryuzaki replied softly. "I'll make sure he knows you came to visit," he promised, giving her a soft smile. "Please, go sit with your father, take care of your family. The case will be closing soon."

"Oh, oh good," Sayu sighed. "Thank you, Ryuzaki," she said with a warm smile before letting herself out.

Once again, Ryuzaki looked over the images, read the captions. The first, Light had his hand, was kissing it softly. The second was during a storm, when they shared their first real kiss. The third was beneath the cherry trees, with two of the task force on either side. The last one had Near in it, crouched between them. Each image was shrouded in shadows, hiding their faces and he was sure, after attempting to enhance the images, that he would be unable to get their faces, but the negatives would likely hold their faces. That was something worth worrying over.

He did, however, like the images quite a bit. First Date, First Kiss, Union and Family, as the images were titled in sequence, were quiet beautiful, and the artist's statement was even more so. A story of love, from start to family. He sent the images to Watari, asked him to purchase the negatives for one million yen, with permission to go as high as he needed to.

He also ordered for the pictures to be framed and mounted on the wall in the apartment he lived in.

Two hours later, Ryuzaki was a bit more worried. The negatives had already been purchased in cash, by a person the artist had never met before. She'd been paid an even ten million yen for them and had used it to pay off her student loans in one fell swoop.

He was waiting on a drawing of the person who had bought the negatives, but until that time, he was putting his attention into tracking Mello. It wasn't going very well at all and, after a while, it was Near who pulled through with the location, finding a mention of suspicious individuals near Nagano by a little old woman.

Ryuzaki took notice of a few more details of the report, but they followed the lead and made their way to Nagano in unmarked vehicles. The end was quickly approaching, and he made it a point to make sure that Watari had the backup plan in place. Just in case.

As they drove down the highway, Ryuzaki rubbed his chest absently, sighing weakly. So it was one of his heirs after all. The proof was irrefutable now, despite how he wished it weren't true. There had been so much promise, in every single one of them.

It took all kinds.

Ryuk was hanging around the base still, hovering here and there, watching curiously as the guns were readied, as Light was released from his shackle.

"They'll be here soon," Mello said softly, snapping a bite off of a fresh bar of chocolate. "Let's get to our posts."

They all pulled on body armor and helmets, not that it would keep them very safe. Then they took their places in various windows of the church, checked their communication channels.

"I have a visual on an unmarked vehicle to the north. Occupants are both wearing riot helmets, hiding faces. There appear to be three of them," Light spoke into the comm.

"Roger that, we've got another car with two occupants to the southeast," Matt replied almost cheerfully.

"And a third to the southwest, another two," Mello finished. "Seems like everybody's here."

"Even the shinigami," Light grinned into the comm. "Let's see who makes the first move."

He hadn't expected it to be Ryuzaki to make the first move, but it was a promising sign when he did.

A/N: Yes, yes, it's almost over! It's sad, I know. If I keep going at this pace, I may just wrap it up today. (Don't count on that, but it's possible.)
