Rain
Chapter 24: Responsibility
Spike stared out of the navigation deck windows into the endless expanse of space, his face drawn into lines of thought as he watched the stars pass by. Rain was gone, she wasn’t coming back, and he understood that. She was a big girl, she knew how to take care of herself, and she’d made her own choices, weather he approved or not. Spike sighed as he turned from the darkness of space and took a seat. Faye, on the other hand, he couldn’t accept. The child that she was carrying, it couldn’t be his. He couldn’t believe it, so he had ignored it, hoping it would fade like the rest of this dream-like world he lived in. But reality, it seems, has a tendency to still be in your face, no matter how much you ignore it.
“Hey Spike,” Jet’s gruff voice called.
Spike lifted his head to his older companion. He noticed the dark circles under Jet’s eyes, the haggard look in his face. Jet was still sad that Rain wasn’t returning and he still loved her. Not to mention that Jet had taken it upon himself to cater to Faye’s every whim and need. He was trying to make up for screwing things up with Rain by helping Faye, since Spike was ignoring her.
“Hey,” Spike greeted.
“What’s on your mind?” Jet asked as he took a seat in a chair and began typing in new coordinates for their next bounty.
“Are we sure she’s telling the truth?” Spike asked softly.
“You mean Faye, right?”
“Yeah.”
“You still in denial about this? I mean, she’s five months along, man. It’s hard not to notice that she’s pregnant. Not that her attitude wasn’t showing that anyways,” Jet mumbled the last part.
Spike grinned. “She still giving you grief?”
“Yeah, but Ed’s on it right now.”
“Poor Ed,” Spike laughed.
“You know, if you hadn’t been such an ass and taken responsibility, I’d be getting more sleep. And Ed wouldn’t be being tortured right now.”
Spike looked away. “You still dreaming about Rain?”
“What’s that got to do with anything?”
“Don’t lie, Jet, even if I did accept that… and I’m not saying that I do… that Faye’s child was mine and my responsibility. You’d still be getting no sleep.”
“Doesn’t matter. Spike, she had a paternity test done on Ganaymede. It’s yours, I got the paperwork in my room.”
Spike froze. He couldn’t deny things anymore. He then stood and started for the door.
“Hey Spike! Where you going?” Jet asked.
Spike turned slightly and shot his friend a smile. “I’m going to wake up and save Ed,” he said as he left the room.
Jet smiled and shook his head. “Good luck man.”

Faye watched, with a great depression in her eyes, the shadows play on the darkness of her floor. It was then that the door opened and a ray of light fell across her face. Slowly she looked up and saw Spike smiling softly at her.
“Hey,” he said gently.
“What do you want?” she asked.
Spike smiled again and closed the door behind himself. Ed watched and smiled happily to Ein and then ran off singing of love, her voice echoing throughout the ship as they drifted along in the endless expanse of space.

Rain reclined in her comfy leather office chair as she gazed out over the city, a recording of her favorite opera playing in the background. She smiled to herself as she watched the world below her. It was times like this that she loved her new life. It was then that the door to her office opened, followed by the soft whisper of bare feet against the cool, black, marble tile of the floor. Rain smiled. ‘So, you finally came, eh Sith?’
“Been a while, Sith,” Rain’s amused voice called out as she continued to gaze out her window.
“The world always looks beautiful from a distance, Rain,” Sith’s cold voice responded.
Rain snor ‘Le ‘Leave it to you to make fun of my relaxation time.’ “I’ve heard rumors,” Rain started, she knew that Sith understood.
“There are so many, be specific.”
‘Oh, so we’re playing this way, are we, old friend?’ Rain asked Sith mentally. “You’re Vicious’ newest conquest,” Rain stated, her voice a little harsh towards the end.
“I’ve been sleeping with him, yes.”
Rain winced, she knew that Sith noticed. “I see.” Those two words holding enough venom to kill thousands.
“Jealous?” Sith teased. She only used that tone with Rain.
Rain growled low and turned the chair around. Her grey eyes steely as she locked them with Sith’s. “Never,” she said, her voice sounding only partially sure of that statement. In truth, she couldn’t say what she felt for Vicious anymore. It wasn’t hate, no she didn’t hate him anymore. “I… sorry. I’m just… confused.”
“About?” Sith asked.
“Everything. About Vicious, about my new position, about… Jet,” her voice grew reminiscent and soft as she spoke his name.
“The cowboy, Jet Black.”
“Yeah, him. I… we… we had something not to long ago.”
“I see.”
“Don’t get all judgy on me, Sith. I know how you feel about cowboys, I know that you know that he’s ex ISSP special forces. I know that you dislike him more because of that. It doesn’t matter anyways. He’s not on the list of guys I can date,” Rain said the last part shortly, her voice dripping with sarcasm. She then stood and walked up to the red haired assassin. Sith stood a few inches taller than her, but not by much. Rain then smiled and embraced the blood haired woman in a crushing hug. “I missed you,” she whispered into the other woman’s shoulder.
Sith seemed to not know how to respond, affection not being her thing. Rain then released the woman and smiled into her dark eyes. She wanted to cry. She assumed that these were left over emotions from her pregnancy and hoped to god that it would pass soon. She wasn’t used to crying all that much. She then took in a deep breath and patted the other woman’s shoulder. “Lunch?” she invited.

Levii: I know, it be short. Live with it, my muse is weird. But hey, Spike\'s not being an idiot anymore. I wrote this entire chapter listening to \"Call me, Call me\" from the Bebop soundtrack Blue. IT be good. I love that song. So fitting for the Spike scenes. If ya;ll don\'t know it, it\'s the song that played at the end of thesodesode when Faye and Ed leave... I know none of the episode names... save a select few. Anyways, review and tell me what ya\'ll think. Luv ya\'ll! Ja Ne!
