For every choice, a consequence

Ladies and gentlemen, this is the last chapter of Control. An Epilogue will follow. I got on a roll and decided to finish it before I moved. I will be editing it and I will be posting a heavily edited version on FanFiction.net after I move. Why, might you ask? Because I’m actually pretty proud of this story and want to share it with as many people as possible. These final chapters are for all the people who have read and for those who have reviewed this story. Your support has meant the world to me.

Control
Chapter 23

Kenshin used all his god-like speed to lunge toward Kaoru. The only thought running through his mind was to save the woman he loved. Leaping, he drew his sword and caught the dagger before it reached its intended target. Hitting it, he directed it toward the man who’d thrown the dagger at Miyori. It landed squarely in the man’s left leg. Spinning, Kenshin took out the man holding Kaoru. He never had a chance to pull the knife across her throat.

Kaoru stood stock still, the sight in front of her was too much for her to take in. Kenshin collapsed at her feet, guilt weighing him down. Looking up, he said a silent prayer for Kaoru was unharmed. He noticed her eyes were wide, her mouth a perfect “O”. Turning, he too took in a sight that would forever be burned in his memory.

Where Kido once stood, so sure of himself, now stood Hiko Seijuro the 13th Master of the Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu. Kido was kneeling, Hiko’s blade across his throat. Behind them, Miyori stood, still clutching the baby. Beside her the man who’d thrown the dagger at Kaoru was down, a dagger protruding from his chest.

Hiko’s eyes met Kenshin’s and Kenshin involuntarily shuddered. The intensity of his Master was astounding. Hiko looked down at his prey. Kido was shaking, sweat collecting on his forehead.

“So you sought to control my apprentice, did you? Let me guess, you thought by controlling a hitokiri, you could control the shape and face of government or some other lofty goal? You’re a fool,” Hiko spat.

“A man controls nothing but his own actions. Your actions have led to a great deal of unhappiness for several people and as a Master of the Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu, it is my responsibility to protect people and their happiness. You are not fit to live,” Hiko said, as he dragged his sword across Kido’s throat.

Kenshin’s eyes widened at his Master’s actions. Kaoru turned her head away. Miyori stood behind Hiko, taking it all in. Hiko leveled his eyes on his wayward apprentice.

“You’ve made a choice here today. Instead of arguing between your head and your heart, you’ve decided to follow your heart. It’s a good start. However, until you accept the ghosts of your past and learn to live with yourself and what you’ve done, you’ll never find peace,” Hiko said, his words striking Kenshin’s heart.

“Still, your choice will have consequences. In choosing Kaoru, you would have sacrificed your child and Miyori. I can’t abide by that. Therefore, you have sacrificed them. They will leave with me. Your daughter will not be yours to raise,” Hiko said, wiping his blade.

Hiko turned and strode into the house. Kenshin still sat kneeling at Kaoru’s feet, gazing toward Miyori and the daughter he would never know. Miyori gave him a smile.

“This is for the best, Kenshin,” she said. Hiko returned from inside, bags slung over his shoulder. Miyori turned and nodded to him. Turning her gaze to Kenshin, she smiled.

“Be happy Kenshin,” she said, turning and following Hiko.

Kenshin watched silently as they walked out of view. Inside, his heart was conflicted, but he could not bring himself to go after them. A hand dropped down onto his shoulder. Kenshin looked up into Kaoru’s concerned eyes.

“This might be for the best Kenshin,” she said.

Kenshin nodded.

“Hai, Kaoru, it might be, but I still feel strangely knowing that my daughter will be out there and unknown to me,” he said.

Kaoru smiled.

“Perhaps this little one will be a girl and will be a daughter that is known to you,” she said, placing a hand over her stomach.

Kenshin’s eyes widened.

“Kaoru, are you saying? Are you?” Kenshin could not finish the words.

Kaoru smiled.

“Hai Kenshin,” she said. “You’re going to be a father again and this little one won’t be leaving you.”
Kenshin wrapped his arms around Kaoru and pulled her close.

“I promise you Kaoru, by the power of all I possess, I will love you and protect you for as long as I live,” Kenshin said. “Will you marry me?”

Kaoru wrapped her arms around Kenshin and pulled him close.

“Hai, Kenshin. I will,” she said.

And that all, was Control. I apologize for the shortness of the final chapter, but I did everything I wanted to and the break in the last chapter was necessary. I promise an Epilogue and it will explain what happened to Miyori. Enjoy!
