Himura Kenshin walked up the familiar mountain path in the hills above Kyoto. Beside him his wife, Himura Kaoru and their son, Kenji, walked. The sunlight dappled through the tree leaves and birds sang happily. But Kenshin was anything but happy. He was nervous. It had been almost 2 years since he’d last seen his Master and their parting was not a joyous occasion. It had been the day Kenshin had first seen his daughter, and the last day he saw his daughter. To this day, he did not know of her whereabouts or what had happened to her mother, Miyori.
Kaoru felt the anxiety rolling off Kenshin in waves. Placing a hand on his shoulder, she looked up into his troubled violet eyes.
“It will be alright Kenshin,” she said.
Kenshin merely nodded, not convinced that his Master would not throw them out on sight. Kenshin looked down at his 8 month old son, sleeping in a hammock slung from his mother’s shoulder. He hoped that his Master would be accepting of the fact that they came to present Kenji to his only living relative-in a sense. Kenshin silently prayed Hiko would accept the baby as a grandson.
As the path continued upward, Kenshin felt his anxiety peaking. As they came through the trees, he first noticed the small hut he’d spent most of his formative years in. Except it wasn’t so small anymore, it was…larger. Kaoru broke the silence.
“It appears Hiko has made some changes since the last time we were here,” she said, a smile in her voice.
Kenshin nodded. Scanning the area before the hut, he spotted his Master, sitting as always before his prized kiln on the well-worn log. Movement to the right of his Master caught his eye and Kenshin held his breath.
Next to Hiko on the ground was a small toddler. Her bright red hair fell just to her shoulders and she wore a light purple kimono. She was stacking a bunch of brightly colored blocks. Blocks, Kenshin noted, that were made from pottery.
“About time you showed up,” Hiko said, not bothering to turn around. “We were starting to wonder if you were ever going to come.”
“Master,” Kenshin said, bowing. “I apologize.”
“Hmph,” Hiko snorted, rising. Bending down he scooped the small girl into his arms. Her laughter washed over the clearing and Kenshin felt a smile forming.
Hiko strode over to them, the little girl having noticed the visitors, was pointing.
“Tou-chan?” she asked.
“Guests,” Hiko said. “And it looks like they’ve brought something with them,” Hiko said, noticing the sleeping baby.
Kaoru smiled.
“We wanted to present Himura Kenji, your grandson, if it would be acceptable to you,” Kaoru said, bowing slightly.
Hiko laughed. Shaking his head he turned toward the hut.
“Miyori, we’ve got guests,” he yelled.
The door slid open and both Kaoru and Kenshin went wide eyed at the sight that greeted them. Miyori stood in the doorway, her belly swollen with another child. Miyori smiled at the couple.
“Wonderful!” she cried out. “I’ll put on some tea. Hiko, don’t be rude, bring them in,” she said, turning back into the hut.
Kenshin blinked and looked at Hiko.
“Master?” he began.
“Shut it, baka deshi, and come on in,” Hiko said, walking toward the hut.
The little girl in Hiko’s arms eyed Kenshin, before smiling really wide.
“Baka deshi!” she cried out.
Kenshin fell over.
