Chapter 25: Lawliet and Raito
~!~!~!~!~!~
The call that Sachiko, Soichiro's wife, and Sayu had left the hospital came late that night. Only then did Light finally leave the building, going with Ryuzaki to the hospital to see his father.
It was obvious, when you looked at him, that he didn't have much time left. So, Light took his father's hand, pressed a kiss to it, and spoke softly to him. He apologized, again, and told him that it hadn't been Kira. It was simply his time.
Soichiro opened his eyes then, let them focus on Light's for one long, painful moment, and slid closed again. Ryuzaki had to pull Light away when the nurses came in, trying to revive him, but it was too late.
Yagami Soichiro was dead.
They were gone before Sachiko and Sayu returned. In the apartment Light shared with L, a small shrine appeared with a fresh mortuary tablet, engraved with Soichiro's name. Light prayed before it daily.
Life returned to some semblance of order after that. Mello and Matt would occasionally sign on for a particularly interesting case, but most of the time they were off making their fortunes in less-than-legal ventures. Somewhere along the line Mello picked up some nasty burns, but they only seemed to make him look a little less insane.
Light and L continued to sleep in the same bed and gradually increased their explorations of one another, building towards sex in a slow, careful balance of lust and respect.
And love. Didn't want to forget that part. The sweetness of it, the way those little touches grew more and more frequent, no matter who was with them. It was only three years before the world started considering L to be a team.
Ryuzaki had decided the idea was so fitting that both Mello and Matt were appointed his heirs, should anything happen to himself or Light.
But nothing did. Years later, M was the second best detective in the world, taking on just as many cases and, at last, laying their less-than-legal activities aside after nearly being uncovered by L in an official capacity.
Aiber and Wedy continued with their work, often doing handiwork for L and M over the years, in exchange for retaining their freedom. Sayu graduated from college and married a cop, much to her mother's dismay. Aizawa became the chief of police in his own time, with Mogi and Matsuda serving as Commanders beneath him.
Near and Lidner were sent to prison and kept in solitary confinement in a maximum security facility. Lidner was returned to the United States while Near remained in Japan. They did not recieve visitors.
M, Aiber, Wedy, Sayu and the remainder of the Taskforce that had hunted both Kiras down were brought together for a small, quiet ceremony. Ryuzaki and Light promised themselves to each other in the equivalent of a marriage ceremony, sans the legal paperwork.
No one had seen hide nor hair of Ryuk since the end of the case, and the ceremony had been the first time since that all of them had been assembled. The celebration lasted well into the following day.
That evening, with the surveillance of the apartment floor turned off, Ryuzaki and Light consummated their relationship for the first time. When they were laying there in bed together, their bodies slick with drying sweat, the sheets stained and forms tangled, they were one.
"Lawliet," L said softly, his forehead pressed to Light's. "L Lawliet."
The smile that curved Light's lips was warm. "Yagami Light."
"Mmm. Light, Raito, it wouldn't be hard for your name to be confused with the English word right," L mumbled softly, his hand sliding through Light's hair, a lazy smile on his lips.
"Raito," Light grinned. "Law and Right, huh? That's a pretty fitting pair of names for us."
L chuckled softly. "It is, isn't it?"
"Mmhmm. Do you want to wipe Mello's hard drive, or should I?" Light asked with a soft yawn.
"Watari can do it. Don't they know we have activation lights on the cameras?" L leaned in for another soft kiss.
"They probably thought we'd be too distracted."
"They were right. Now I'm going to distract you again," L grinned. It wasn't something he did often, and it sent a shiver down Light's spine.
"Thanks for the warning," he muttered, then rolled on top of his lover, his husband. His Law.
And L took what was Rightfully his.

A/N: Okay, so final chapter is pretty corny, but I figure we needed a bit better closure, and besides, smart people are notorious for providing us with the Corny. I really wanted to incorporate the explanation of the name into the final chapter, with a few updates on what happened to everybody. I hope you enjoyed Law and Right!
