Chapter 26: Bonus Materials

Chapter and Story Names

~!~!~!~!~!~

Law and Right

This is a play on the names of the main characters, L Lawliet and Yagami Raito. I chose to refer to Raito as Light in this piece so that the title would be less obvious and that is also why I referred to L as Ryuzaki instead. Until the last chapter, of course.

Rape Arc

~!~!~!~!~!~

1. Almost

Because Light almost escaped rape, and his life was filled with close calls.

2. Confessions

Because Light confessed to being Kira. It was also a time of much self reflection for Light, when he confessed many things to himself.

3. Logic

Because Misa's logic changed L's mind about having Light executed.

4. Execution

Light's 'execution' takes place in this chapter.

5. Resurrection

Light rises from the ashes of his former life. It is as if he has died and been reborn even within his own mind.

6. Onigiri with Umeboshi

The symbolism that the boys would be using to speak of Light's rape, which becomes central to the story.

7. Trial and Error

The result of the rapist's trial is revealed, and Light makes the error of believing he was ready to face that information.

8. Fingers

The first signs of romance start in this chapter, when Light puts his hands over Ryuzaki's to help him make onigiri. The feeling of Light's fingers lingers in Ryuzaki's mind.

9. Go

This is the name of the game Light and Ryuzaki play while waiting for the cake to bake.

10. Lighthouse

The shard of plate that Light cuts himself with is called a lighthouse, and as a result of the events in the chapter, Ryuzaki becomes a lighthouse to Light.

11. Funeral Bells

Light and Ryuzaki speak about funerals and the bells Ryuzaki heard on the day Light confessed to being Kira.

12. Thank You

Light finally thanks Ryuzaki for letting him live and for showing him remorse.

13. Anniversary

It centers on the anniversary of Light's confession of being Kira and the anniversary of his execution.

Kira Arc

~!~!~!~!~!~

14. Reunion

So named for the reunion of Ryuzaki and Light with the rest of the taskforce that had hunted Kira.

15. Photogenic

The final sentences are a reference to photos being taken of Ryuzaki and Light atop the building.

16. Morning Coffee

Sayu is out that morning, after a cup of coffee. Also a playful reference to my favorite Morning Musume song.

17. Atlas

This refers to how Light feels as if he's had weight removed from his shoulders by telling his sister everything.

18. Clueless

There were so many clues, but none of them were really pointing in a solid direction. There was nothing they could do to act on those clues right away to find the real Kira. This was also a red herring, to make the reader think that perhaps every clue revealed in the chapter was, in fact, a red herring in and of itself.

19. L & N

This is a reverence to the strain between Ryuzaki and Near. It is also the name of a road in the city I live in, and since it was so odd and fit the chapter, I chose to use it.

20. Confinement

A pretty obvious reference to the way that Near was imprisoned in this chapter.

21. Suspicious

This is the chapter in which Light truly realizes that Near is the new Kira, and Near begins acting suspiciously more than he had previously been doing.

22. Cunning

Because frankly, that's how I felt after I penned the last line in the chapter. I put Ryuk in that van to throw the readers off, and I felt quite clever for it. I also wanted to foreshadow just how much thought all three sides had put into the impending confrontation. It was a rather cunning trap that L, Matt and Mello were crafting for Near.

23. Deception

I was attempting to deceive the reader here, and all sides were trying to deceive the other. There were a lot of players who had to be deceptive to pull off the operation that was underway.

24. Revelations

This chapter contains the Big Reveal, giving away all the secrets of how everything was done. I did entertain, for a little while, using the Death Eraser seen in the pilot episode of Death Note, but decided that the note-swap would be a bit easier to make believable. I decided this at the last minute, which is why it didn't get mentioned even briefly in previous chapters. Then again, I also wanted the identity of Kira to be a surprise, so I probably wouldn't have put it in until the Big Reveal, anyway.

25. Lawliet and Raito

This was intended to make the reader see the similarity between the character's names and the title of the story, because while this chapter serves as closure to the story, it also serves to explain how I came up with the name for the story.

Review Responses

~!~!~!~!~!~

I'll try to reply to each review within twenty four hours! They will be replied to with the oldest replies at the top. Thank you so much for your feedback!!!

Yuneek: Well, when I'm writing something, and I get a chapter done, I'm not the kind of person who can wait to upload it. ^^; When I do that, I end up forgetting to upload it at all! So I update only as fast as I write, and sometimes that leads to a few errors here and there that need cleaned up once in a while. (I actually had to rewrite the whole church scene with Mello, Matt and Light because in the Big Reveal, I changed my mind about a certain detail that would have pulled in something from the Pilot episode. In the end, I decided it would be better to leave the Pilot separate, at least for now. Who knows. I've got some ideas bouncing around already for a sequel. They still aren't fully formed yet, but who knows! Maybe you'll get another one. =3)

I knew for certain that I wanted the identity of Kira to be a surprise, right up until the very end. This is why I left so many of the details out (and because L lied about a thing or two in the Big Reveal, which will play heavily into a sequel if I write one). There was a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff going on throughout the Kira Arc and it makes me happy that it made sense to you! =3 I did want to give the sense that Light was betraying L in the van scene, so that was why I had him speak that way, even though they both already knew they were on the same side. It was mostly a show for Ryuk, because L knew there was a possibility of the shinigami tailing them when they picked Light up. Hence the realism of the kidnapping.

As for Soichiro, I wanted to stay true to the real timeline in terms of the death-days that were already known. Soichiro gave up half his lifespan for the shinigami eyes in the series, but he really only cut his life down by a few hours. I felt that I shouldn't lengthen his lifespan past what it should have been, really. That's why I had to let him go. At least he has the satisfaction of knowing it wasn't Kira who killed him! I wanted to make sure of that, too.

Haha! That's great! And there's a reason L made sure Aizawa was the one wired to hit Matsuda's charge. XD He's the only trustworthy one in the bunch! Even Mogi probably would have given him a jolt for those theatrics over Light. You're welcome for the quick updates! Thank you for reading so faithfully!

Yuneek: Review number two! I'm glad you enjoyed the ending so much. I made the chapter a big wrap-up, to kind of tie up most of the loose ends. ^^ I'm really glad you liked the fluffiness of it.

Tenshi Haku: Thank you so much! ^-^ I really appreciated your reviews, especially at the beginning of the story. You were a great motivator! I'm also glad that you were fooled by the ending. I tried very hard to make the possible Kiras obvious, but the real Kira a mystery. I'm so happy Ryuk-in-the-van worked, even though Light stared at him so obviously when they reached the church. (And even though Matt and Mello never seemed to do anything that had anything to do with Ryuk.)

As for those notorious pictures! I actually meant to put in that Lidner bought them in the Big Reveal, but now that I think about it, I'm glad that I left that end dangling. I really do want to write a sequel, but first I have to come up with a main plot arc. I already know who the main characters would be, I just need something for them to do, you know? XD; I'll be thinking very hard about it! Maybe I'll come up with something soon and you'll see a sequel popping up. I really enjoyed writing this, it's been a while since the plot bunnies had attacked.

Rianne: Thank you so much! If you liked this one, you might want to check out the sequel, Truth and Justice. I just finished it up a day or two ago!

daiesthai: Haha! That's very funny! Sadly, that's not the actual name. We simply call them the 'Secret Service', but I tacked on 'American' because the majority of the characters are Japanese, and I was trying to present it from a more Japanese perspective. When an American hears the term 'Secret Service' we usually associate that with the people who are in charge of protecting high ranking politicians. (Like the President, Vice President, Congress members, so on and so forth. The big names in Washington D.C.) I really didn't think about how it could be abreviated at all (nor was it intended as an innuendo). XD It did crack me up, though.

NoneYa: Yay! =3 I know a fearfully small amount about onigiri. (Most of what I do know I got from Furuba.) Though what you're describing... honestly sounds kind of gross. XD; I've never eaten white rice with salt on it before, let alone with a coating of it. I was also basing the idea of wetting the nori over the fact that whenever I order Sushi, the nori seems to be slimy. (Granted, I don't actually touch it. I just attempt to pull it off whatever I'm eating so I don't have to eat it. ^^; Not a fan of the seaweed.) But! I shall take your word for it if I ever need to write another onigiri-making scene again. =3 Thanks! And I'm glad you've enjoyed the story so far!

~!~!~!~!~!~

A/N: And that's all there is of Law and Right! Be sure to check out the sequel, Truth and Justice, as well as the other stories from the Death and Note series. =3 This was only the beginning! If you have any questions or requests to see here in the Bonus Material, hit me up with a review or poke me on AIM at Chaggit. Thank you so much for reading my story! I hope you had as much fun reading it as I did writing it!

My final note: This is the only plot bunny I have had in a very long time. Any conversations, ideas, or suggestions you have to offer may give me another one, for which I would be very grateful. That said, I'd love to hear from you!
