Chapter 3
In Sickness and in Health: Chapter 3
It was getting colder and colder as the fire dimmed. Reese could only hug her legs to her chest to keep warm. Her eyelids felt very heavy and she found it hard to keep them open. Then, a strong gust of wind blew the fire out completely. Reese cursed under her breath and moved deeper into the cave. She got as far back as she could and lied on a large rock. It was uncomfortable, but it would have to work. She let her eyes close and she fell asleep.
Specula could see how bar mar master’s condition was. The organoid tromped over the Zoidian and poked her snout at Reese’s chin. Reese opened her eyes and gave Specula an annoyed look. Reese closed her eyes again but the organoid would not leave her alone.
“ Specula, what is it?” Reese asked as Specula nipped her arm.
The blue organoid proceeded to drag Reese from the rock. Reese yelled at the organoid to stop, but Specula did not obey. Reese was easily annoyed by this and tried to pry her arm from Specula’s jaw.
“ Specula! What’s the matter with you?” Reese roared.
The organoid roared back, telling Reese that they should go back to Raven and that staying out here wouldn’t be good for her. Reese turned her head away from the organoid. Specula was right in saying that being out here was bad for her health, but she didn’t want to go back with Raven. Or did she?

It was nightfall before Raven reached the cave. It was still raining, but not as hard as it has been. He stopped the Genobreaker and jumped out. It was very dark inside the cave; so dark that he could see what lay inside it. He walked inside the cave and felt around for a moment. That was getting him nowhere.
“ Reese?” He called.
Reese immediately picked up Raven’s voice. Was she that delirious? Or did she actual hear him? She heard his voice again and she wanted to respond, but her voice did seem to be working. After a few moments, she called his name in a shaky voice. Raven followed the sound of her voice and he found her lying on a rock.
“ Reese,” he said again. He felt her forehead and her temperature had soared from the last time he had checked. “ Shadow! Get me a flare!” Raven called to his organoid. In a matter of seconds, Shadow returned with an emergency flare in his mouth. Raven struck it against the ground and the cave was lit in a green lit. “Why did you come all the way out here?”
Reese winced at his harsh tone and replied, “ Why does it matter to you?”
“ Reese, you idiot! You could have died out here!” Raven roared.
“ If you really want to know,” Reese said shakily. “ It’s the only place I feel wanted.”
Raven raised an eyebrow at Reese’s statement. She proceeded to tell him the story about Nichalo and how he died trying to save her. By the end for the story, Reese was crying again and Raven was left thunderstruck. Why hadn’t she told him this before?
“ Reese……..I didn’t know,” Raven started.
Suddenly, Reese pushed him away and said, “ Don’t pretend like you care, because I know you don’t. No one does!”
Reese then tried to stand up and walk away. She only made it a few steps before she began to tumble toward the ground. Before she hit the cave floor, Raven ran to catch her. He looked down at her and saw that she had fainted. Raven picked her up from the ground and carried her to the Genobreaker. He beckoned Specula and Shadow to follow.

Reese awoke in a warm bed and she was feeling somewhat better. She saw Raven sleeping on a chair next to the bed. Reese reached up to try and tug on his sleeve, but Raven woke up before she could do so. “ F “ Finally up,” Raven said as he reached her a cup of tea on the dresser.
“ What do you mean by finally?” Reese asked as she took the cup from Raven.
“ You’ve been out for two days.”
“ Two days!” Reese said, almost spilling tea on herself.
“ You were in pretty bad shape when I found you, plus you looked exhausted.”
There was a long pause before Reese spoke again. “ Raven, why did you come back for me?”
Raven’s eyes widened; he defiantly wasn’t expecting that. What was he going to tell her? He couldn’t tell her that his first thought was to leave her there. Was the reason he went back for her because he……..cared about her?
“ Raven?” Reese said. “ Tell me.”
Raven remained silent. He could not bring up the words to show how he felt. He had never had feelings like this before; no one had ever reflected those feelings on him. Well, Raven didn’t exactly have a golden childhood. Raven sat silently, staring down into his cup of tea.
“ You don’t have to answer, Raven,” Reese said as she lay back down.
Raven watched as Reese turned away from. He wanted to tell her, he wanted to shout it, but he couldn’t. Setting his tea on the side table, Raven left the room. He stepped outside; the sky was a light gray color. The temperature seemed to have lowered considerably. As soon as Raven arrived, a light snow began to fall. Sighing to himself, Raven sank to the front step and sat down. He leaned against the door and watched his breath make clouds in front of his face. He looked up at the window, which belonged to Reese’s room. He felt something deep in the pit of his stomach. Was it guilt? He believed it was. He had felt this way after he destroyed all of the bases.
“Dammit, Raven,” he cursed and sank lower on the step.
