Part Three: Half-breed Hatred
The rising sun assaulted their eyelids. The men slowly woke.
Goku grinned. “I’m hungry.” Amazing how a little confession can make someone feel better.
Hakkai smiled. “I’m working on it.” Hakkai wondered why he’d become the default cook of the group. He thought about Sanzo and Goku…ummm, no. He remembered the few times Gojyo cooked. Ummm, no. Yes, he was the only one that could put something on a plate that was recognizable. What can you do?
Gojyo looked in the direction of the fresh grave and turned his head toward the town. He saw the small trail of blood and his eyes followed it to into the distance. “I’m thirsty,” he mumbled to no one.
Sanzo’s eyes narrowed. “Watch yourself.” Sanzo sensed the flash of darkness behind those crimson eyes.
Gojyo looked at the priest and closed his eyes. He felt his mixed blood burning. Do they have any idea what kind of struggle I go through? How hard it is to keep myself in check? How I feel the shame that is so evident on every half-breed‘s face? How I lived through that? The beatings I took….the blood I saw…the sadness I witnessed…the Death I wanted. He opened his eyes and look at Sanzo, “You’re right.” Somehow, right now just as he’d done in the past, he’d keep himself in check.
Sanzo knew something was very wrong. The water sprite had agreed with him.
Gojyo picked at his food in silence, flashes of the woman‘s body mixed with his personal memories --- he‘d lost his appetite last night. He was picking at the food to be polite.
Hakkai was thankful there wasn’t more light last night, while he slowly and calmly ate.
Goku ate with reckless abandon.
Sanzo stared into his coffee, he’d never admit it, but he was very worried over Jorja. He didn’t understand his feelings for the woman. He didn’t want his feelings for the woman. Maybe, he felt an affinity toward her because she was so strong. Maybe, a small part allowed his feelings because he could attribute it all to her special nature. Maybe, this was the one woman in the world he could need, while attributing it all to an external lotus of control. He could save face while caring for her and that made her safe. Yes, that had to be it. He could experience what he needed without looking weak.
Sanzo didn’t know, understand, and/or care to acknowledge that his band of brothers would never see him as weak. They knew he was human and they accepted his biological limitations --- few that they were. They secretly rejoiced in him; finding someone that could mellow his temperament. They all thought Jorja was good for him. Even Hakkai had slowly forgiven her; although, he didn’t fully understand why.
They struck camp and Gojyo began to walk off in the direction of the town. He couldn’t expect them to go with him.
This wasn’t their mission, this was a burden that those with the taboo mark carried in solitude. Shame, humiliation, pain, and anger made up a thin line that connected all of the children of taboo. Humans couldn’t understand. Demons couldn’t understand. Even, Monkey Kings couldn’t understand.
Hakuryuu transformed into the Jeep and Goku began to load up the gear.
Hakkai looked at Gojyo walking off. “Where are you going?”
Gojyo replied without looking back, “To town.” Smoke left a trail behind him.
Sanzo looked at him. “Not alone.”
Gojyo stopped. What, no argument? No lecture about their mission? No jab about priorities. Could they possibly understand? He turned around and met the jeep as they drove to town.
The small trail of blood acted like a pointer. It beckoned them toward their destination.
As the town came into view, they saw a macabre scene. There were four -- two on each side of the road --- pikes in the ground. Each pike held a mixed-blood’s lifeless head.
“Stop the jeep,” Gojyo stated coldly.
Hakkai brought the jeep to a stop, averting his eyes from the warning. Gojyo leaped from the jeep and walked up to the warning.
He conjured his staff and stuck down each pike. He looked at the road into town and walked. He stood on the line where road met town. He dismissed his staff. He took one step in and stood there --- very still.
Hakkai slowly crept the jeep up to him.
A woman on the street looked up and dropped her packages. “Another one!” She turned and ran down the street.
Hakkai stopped the jeep in the middle of the road. Sanzo jumped from the jeep his robes popping in the wind. Hakkai stepped down and Goku jumped up and sailed over the hood. He landed with a soft thud.
Gojyo moved only his eyes as he watched the woman run.
Villagers slowly emerged from the buildings and side streets --- men and women. All with weapons of some kind. Clubs, pitch forks, knives, swords, axes, fists and one sawed-off double barreled shotgun, mixed with each other.
Gojyo stood bare handed and glared at them.
A man spoke up from the crowd. “Leave, demon spawn!”
Gojyo scanned the crowd for the man and locked his eyes on him.
A woman spoke up, “We no longer allow your kind here!”
His eyes shifted and found her. She took two steps back under his gaze.
Another man spoke, “Did you not understand the warning?! You stupid freak of nature!”
Gojyo slowly blinked as his eyes sought out and found the verbal assailant.
A woman eerily laughed. “Too stupid to recognize his own kin on a stick.”
Gojyo’s jaw set as his eyes found her.
The large man with the shotgun, took several steps forward and sneered at Gojyo. “We’ve got you out numbered, spawn. We’ll do you like we did her.”
That was the confirmation he needed. “Look at yourself. You have the balls to call me the demon…to call me the freak…to call me the spawn.” He spoke through his teeth. “I don’t even have a weapon. I’ve done nothing here but breathe.”
Sanzo walked toward Gojyo.
A woman yelled out. ”A Sanzo! Surely, he will save us from the demon!”
Sanzo rolled his eyes as he stepped beside Gojyo. He reached into his robe and pulled out his cigarettes. “Got a light?” he asked, without making eye contact.
Gojyo continued to scan the crowd as he reached into his pocket and held his lighter between two fingers.
Sanzo snatched it from him and lit his cigarette. He let out a stream of smoke and handed it back. “Thanks.”
Gojyo put it back in his pocket. “No problem.” The effect is worth it.
The man carrying the shotgun yelled to the crowd, “He’s not a real priest, he consorts with demons!” The man glared at him. “When did you kill the holy man and steal those robes? ”
Sanzo’s jaw set. No one questions his validity as priest except for him. He smirked. “Ain’t this some shit...” The words rolled off his tongue. He began to pace. His cigarette when flying. “Everywhere I go, someone has to wonder if I’m a real priest. “ He began to wave his arms. “You don’t act like a priest, they say. You look too young to be a real Sanzo, they say.” His arm movements became more and more wild and his voice became louder and louder. “And they say --- what “ he jerked his arms down and back up, “kind of”, he jerked his arms down and back up, “a priest”, [arms back down and then back up] “are you!?” In one smooth movement he jerked his arms down and his left arm jutted out . His banishing gun was aimed right between the eyes of Mr. Shotgun. “The-kind-that-can-kick-your-bigoted-ass!” The sentence came out of his mouth as one long word.
Mr. Shotgun was taken completely by surprise by the priest’s movements. The crowd gasped at the sight of a supposed-sanzo wielding a gun.
Gojyo’s stone face broke into a grin.
Mr. Shotgun regained his composure and looked at the priest’s cold violet eyes through the sights of the shot gun.
“I don’t think so!” Goku yelled as his staff knocked the shotgun out of the man’s hands.
Goku landed with a soft thump and a giggle.
Hakkai stepped from behind Gojyo. “Do you think we can talk this out….or does somebody have to die?” Was that my mouth? Maybe the theatrics are getting to me. What can you do? Hakkai smiled oh-so-sweetly at the crowd.
Gojyo cleared his throat and stepped into the crowd. “I’m so sick of this shit. Something happened here to make you think the half-breeds are doing something. Something caused your hatred and racism. Well, if beating the shit out of me will help you, fine! However, killing a defenseless woman…that’s just shameful.” He looked at Mr. Shotgun. “Do you dare call yourself a man after beating an innocent woman? Why don’t you try kicking the ass of someone that can make it interesting?”
Gojyo spread his arms out as he looked at the man. “I’ll even give you the first hit.”
Mr. Shotgun reared his arm back. “We don’t need you, Mutt!” Gojyo stepped to the side and let the bulky, predictable punch pass.
“Can you do better than that?” Gojyo asked calmly. “Here try again, I’ll even line it up for you.” Gojyo adjusted his stance so the guy had a straight gut shot.
The man reared his arm back and let loose a punch. Gojyo snatched his fist. “Not the god damn face!” He twisted the guy’s arm behind his back and pushed him away.
Hakkai brought a hand to his mouth and shook his head. I know this.
Mr. Shotgun staggered as he regained his balance and looked at Gojyo.
Gojyo looked at him. “What have I done? Did I breathe wrong? Wear the wrong clothes? Or is it simply the fact that I was born that bothers you so?”
Mr. Shotgun glared at Gojyo. “Do you think some words from a dog’s mouth will change anything?”
Sanzo glared at the crowd. “No, we can kill the whole town…and be justified… in order to save innocents.”
Several people in the crowd turned and walked briskly away.
Hakkai smiled. “Changes are happening all over Shangri-La. Manifesting in all sorts of ways. You people are trying to kill the very group that is trying to save the land. Ahhh, irony.”
Goku grinned. “Just let me know when, Sanzo. I’m all ready for a little fun!”
Several more villagers left.
Gojyo looked at Mr. Shotgun. “Your numbers are dwindling, bucko.”
Sanzo gritted his teeth. “Not that it matters. And, don’t say bucko ---it’s stupid.”
Gojyo chuckled at Sanzo. “What should I say? Punk? Buster Brown? Maybe dim-rod?”
Sanzo cut his eyes toward Gojyo. “Dim-rod? What the hell is a dim-rod?”
Gojyo relaxed his stance. “Well you know fluorescent lights….ya know the rods….well, when they are getting ready to go out, they go dim. Thus a dim-rod.”
Sanzo shook his head. “I should shoot you for that.”
Hakkai laughed. “At least the weather is nice, don’t you think so Goku? ”
Mr. Shotgun couldn’t believe they weren’t scared of his smaller-but-still-angry mob.
They simply weren’t taking him seriously. It was as if he wasn’t there.
Goku looked at Hakkai. “Yeah, but I’ve seen better.”
Hakkai smiled. “We’ve seen worse too.”
Mr. Shotgun noticed their guard had dropped and took a step to charge Gojyo.
Before his foot hit the ground, a shot cut through the air.
Sanzo glared at him, “Now, I think you owe my associate an apology.”
Mr. Shotgun looked at Sanzo. “Fuck off, faker!” He continued his charge toward Gojyo. Gojyo stepped aside and Hakkai took command of the guy’s body and placed a calculated chop. The guy fell limp to the ground, effectively out of the skirmish.
Gojyo looked at the remaining crowd --- about twenty. He scanned the faces of the angry men. “Which ones of you beat the woman? Did any of you even know her name?”
The heads turned toward each other. One man said, “We did, got a problem with it?”
Gojyo sneered, “And the warnings? Your little pieces of modern macabre art…did you do that too?”
The same man spoke up, “Yep. We’ll rebuild it too….starting with you.”
Hakkai put his smile back on. “Congratulations!”
The group looked at him.
Goku spoke up cheerily, “You get to ---”
“Die!” Sanzo spoke through his teeth as he squeezed his trigger. That’s one.
Gojyo thought about his staff and decided the skin they hated so very much was going to be their last contact. Gojyo watched a swing come for him; he stepped in to his attacker and elbowed the man across the chin. He followed that with a groin kick and pushed the man down.
Hakkai looked down the street through the ruckus and saw an empty well. That glow….it’s demon aura! “Sanzo shoot the well!”
Goku snickered, “Seriously, dude, you need to work out your thing against wells.”
Sanzo dodged a pitch fork and squeezed off a round at the well. The well glowed with a dark aura briefly and then shattered into tiny pieces. The pieces faded from existence.
The alert and unconscious attackers reverted back to their original demonic forms.
Gojyo conjured his staff. Makes sense now. He swung with clean accuracy. One, two, three for me.
Goku leaped into a bunch and commenced a whirl-wind attack. Umm four. He nodded his head quickly and looked for another target.
Hakkai parted his hands, his lightning chi crackled. He jutted his hands out at an angle and let the chi go.
Sanzo cringed; this attack always made him nervous. However, even he had to admit it looked very cool and intimidating.
Hakkai’s chi jumped from one attacker to the next finally converging on one very dead and confused demon. Let’s see …five.
“Still like your style, Hakkai.“ These demons are using infiltration and psychological attacks now? Someone has to be behind this. Normal demons aren’t that smart. Sanzo thought as he fired his weapon. Four more .
Gojyo scanned the scene. Two unconscious, one still up. He swing for the upright demon’s throat. He felt his fist break the wind pipe and the demon disappeared. Scary, that one felt too good.
Goku poked one of the unconscious ones with his Nyoi-Bo. “You awake?” No fun in killing a sleeping demon. Goku looked down at the demon with a forlorn look on his face. He was content to wait until the demon was done napping.
Gojyo grabbed unconscious Mr. Shotgun by the hair and yanked him off the ground. Gojyo slapped him a few times and the demon slowly opened his eyes. Gojyo looked at him, “Who sent you to do this, demon?”
The demon spat at him, “No one, mutt. We don’t like your kind around here. Prancing around with humans like you are one. Your kind doesn’t belong anywhere but a grave.”
Gojyo spoke though his teeth, “Wrong answer.” Gojyo released the demon’s hair and threw him away. The demon stood up and began to charge Gojyo. Glaring red eyes were the last things he saw as Gojyo’s foot went through his stomach.
Goku poked the demon again. “Aww c’mon!”
Sanzo sighed as the lit a cigarette. Gojyo leaned on Hakkai’s shoulder. The three men watched Goku beg for a decent fight.
Goku poked him again. “Oh-for-the-love-of-god! I should kill you for wasting my time.”
Gojyo looked over at Sanzo. “You taught him that.”
Sanzo let a “Hmmph” out as he took a drag on his cigarette. He walked over to a building and leaned against the wall.
Gojyo lit up as he sat down in the street. Hakkai scratched his head as he scanned the area.
Hakkai walked up to the demon. Goku looked at Hakkai. “No! He’s mine fair and square!”
Hakkai smiled at Goku. “No worries.” He bent down and whispered to the demon, “Kougaiji is watching.”
The demon jumped up, and got into a fighting stance.
Goku smiled. “Cool!” He swung his Nyoi-bo and off went the demon’s head.
Hakkai shrugged. “Well, that answers that.”
Sanzo knitted his brow. “I know that’s what it looks like, but this doesn’t seem to be his style.”
Gojyo looked at Sanzo. “Yeah, he’s actually got some honor. He wouldn’t bring innocents in like this.” Gojyo thought about his brother pushing him into the water. Honor…until recently.
Sanzo snuffed out his cigarette. “Which leads one to ask, is there someone else manipulating his minions?”
Hakkai noticed that the road was still quiet. There was an uneasy feel to the air. “I know sleeping at an inn tonight would be nice, but I don’t think we should stay here.” He walked back to the jeep and pulled out the map.
Sanzo, Gojyo and Goku walked toward the jeep.
Goku looked up at Gojyo. “Five!” he said smiling.
Gojyo looked at him and grinned. “Me too, runt.”
Sanzo curled his upper lip ---trying to hide a snicker. “Five here.”
Hakkai sighed. “So a four way tie.” He laughed softly.
They hit the road and headed west.
