Nightmares

A/N: FINALLY! I return with the re-remake of Chapter 3 of Nothing but Trouble. College has forced me into a ludicrously long absence, and now I seem to be able to get going again. If you didn’t know before, this is basically an extension of the bedtime scene. Vash learns a little more about Trean, while Trean herself is haunted by nightmares.

Chapter 3- Nightmares

Throughout much of the night, Vash couldn’t sleep. He had this overwhelming urge to protect the mysterious beauty that now lay on his bed. He smiled as he looked at her soft features for the umpteenth time that hour. The moonlight flowing in from the nearby window showered her frame in a way that made her seem to glow like an angel. Still, there was something about her that warranted caution and danger. Vash could only guess it was the abilities she possessed.

As he guarded over Trean while she slept, his thoughts began to wander. He thought of the past; to Rem; to meeting his friends; to his battles; to his innocence....to Trean once more. There were so many questions left unanswered, so many things left unexplained. Like, what age she was, and where she came from. What kind of guns did she use? He felt he was entitled to know that much, but he would not wake her just to find out.

Instead, he sighed and looked around the room. He noticed that Trean had left some items on the table, including her guns, so he figured he may gain some information on her. He honestly didn’t like snooping around like this but the information he could gain may prove useful while she was with him. Silently he walked over to the table, careful to not make the wooden floor squeak beneath his feet. The first things he looked at were her guns; he pulled one out of its holster and inspected it. Trean used two automatic pistols, probably MP5s from the looks of it. This struck the gunman as odd, as they weren’t a very accurate gun to use in a firefight, but the spray of bullets made it so that at least a few would hit. From the look of it, they were rarely used, but in excellent condition. After placing it back, he moved on to her other items. A look through her wallet proved no results, and he dare not take a cent of the money inside. She had no pictures, no cards, nothing else that could provide him with a clue.

It was then that Vash heard shifting sheets and groaning behind him. Slowly he turned, to see Trean had turned over in the bed. While she had been lying on her back before, now she lay on her side, her hair draped in a way that the back of her neck could visibly be seen. In light of the waning moon, a mark could be seen on her skin where her spine ran. When Vash moved in for closer inspection, he could clearly tell the strange mark she bore. A small black dot with a black ring around it like a bulls-eye, with an x intersecting though the circles. Vash had never seen this mark in all the years of his life, and it confounded him as to why a woman would have such a mark at all.

Trean suddenly began groaning again as she moved haphazardly on the bed. Vash barely had time to back up as a hand went sailing right past his face. Trean continued to twist and turn, groaning and whimpering in fear. Was she having a nightmare?

“No, no! Get away from me; I don’t want to go in there again!” Trean groaned hoarsely in her rest. Her words only confirmed what Vash had expected.

Without a moment to loose, he quietly sat on the bed next to her, gently placing her head in his lap. "Shh, shh." He cooed, stroking her hair, making sure to not wake her. "It's okay, calm down. Shh, shh." He kept up like this for several moments, quietly soothing her as she dreamed her horrible dreams, careful to not let her leave his lap, or do herself or him anymore harm. Suddenly, she woke with a start, sitting up straight with a cold sweat. Vash looked on at her, knowing it best not to alert her immediately of his presence and frighten her. Her breathing was ragged, and she seemed as if she could burst into tears any moment.

"Are you okay, Miss Trean?" He asked after several moments.

"Yeah," She responded, but her voice had betrayed her; the hoarseness of her breath as if she had been screaming told him all he needed to know.

"You were having a nightmare, weren't you?" Vash asked as she turned to look at him, her eyes fixed on a point away from his face.

Trean looked away from him for a minute, anything to avoid eye contact with this caring stranger. “Yeah.”

Concerned for the woman he had befriended, he turned her around so she was facing him, Trean looking nervously down at the bed. Gently, he lifted her head so he could see her into her eyes, read her emotions. What he found in there was great fear, and pain. "So you were having a nightmare. Do you want to tell me what you were dreaming about?"

She looked down, before resting her head against him for her own solace. “I’ve had this dream before,” She slowly explained, hesitant to tell him everything. "I find myself in a tube of glass, filled with some strange liquid. I was trapped, and no matter how hard I beat at the glass, it would not make a single crack. A man walked up to me, smiling at tapping at the barrier with a cane he carried. I sudden; found the tube draining and opening…and two mean dragging me somewhere with him at the lead...” She went silent. "I don't want to say what happened next."

Vash, once again sympathetic for her, put his arms around her and held her close. "It was just a dream, Trean. I swear I'll never let anyone harm you as long as you allow me to protect you. Now," he gently tucked her back into bed. "Get some rest." With a nod, she obeyed him and lay back down. It wasn't long before she was back to sleep. Slowly getting up so he wouldn’t disturb her, he took his perch back in the chair.

It wasn't long before he, too, was sound asleep.

A/N: Well, it was a long wait, but I'm glad that I finally have this chapter revision completed. As I already said, this chapter is an extension/re-redo of the bedtime scene in the original third chapter. I’m very happy with how this chapter redo came out. No out of character Vash, yaay! XD It sounds much better now. Remember to please read and review, this lets me know if y'all want me to continue on with my story. In the next chapter: Trean reveals her past to Vash and his friends. In the meantime, a new enemy makes his appearance. Who is this new foe? What about Trean's past? It's all in chapter 4- When the Morning Comes!
