Chapter 3: Drum Island
At one point in the middle of the night, Nami woke up to see her namaka all sprawled across the floor of her cabin, snoozing away. The thought of them all worrying over her had made her smile despite how rotten she felt, and coaxed her into a deeper and somewhat more restful sleep. The next thing she knew, she was in a different bed while Luffy argued with Sanji about taking her to see the doctor.
“The journey alone will kill her,” she heard Sanji yell. “It can’t be done.”
“I’ll carry her,” Luffy rebutted, as if that explanation solved all problems.
“All the way up a mountain who’s peak is above the clouds?” Nami didn’t recognize that voice.
“I can do it,” he stated.
“But Nami cannot,” Vivi diagnosed. “The weather combined with being jostled around as she’s carried will be too much for her body to handle.”
“I’ll be really careful,” Luffy promised.
“Luffy, this is serious,” Ussop tried. “She could actually die before you get up there.”
“No she won’t!” he insisted, a little more forcefully than his usual tone. Nami’s vision blurred and she closed her eyes, passing out of consciousness for a bit. Luffy calling her name and patting her cheek is what brought her back to reality.
“Nami, in order to get you to a doctor, we need to climb a really big mountain,” he rattled off to her as Sanji squwacked in the background. “I’m gonna carry you up there.”
Her ears were beginning to ring and though she could make out Luffy in her vision, there were little white flecks that were swimming around in her vision as well. She knew that she wasn’t going to last much longer at this rate.
Climb a mountain? Eh, why not? She’d seen Luffy do so many things that were crazier and unheard of before, so, why not climb a mountain? Not for the first time, she decided to put her life in Luffy’s hands.
Sanji didn’t like that answer. She could tell that Vivi didn’t either, but the young princess said nothing. Nami figured that if she did, she’d probably break down crying. So, up a mountain they went. It was bumpy and cold and by the end of it, her ears wouldn’t stop ringing and she wondered what the hell she’d been thinking before.
With a somewhat glazed vision, she looked to her side as she was lowered from Luffy’s grasp to the ground. Sanji was unconscious and looked pretty bad. She shivered unconsciously in the snow, suddenly feeling the difference of laying against a warm body versus the snow.
Without warning, his body covered hers in a tight embrace.
“Nami,” Luffy huffed breathlessly. “We made it up the mountain.”
Her vision was so far gone that all she could make out above her was a white blur. It could have been snowing on them, but she couldn’t tell.
“Nami?” he repeated, sounding a little more desperate. He added a gentle shake for good measure. Nami took a breath to answer him but the words caught in her throat and she passed out.
The music makes me sway
The angels singing say we are alone with you
I am alone and they are too with you
I'm alive, I'm alive
When consciousness came back to her, she immediately noticed that she was warm. Her head hurt and she was extremely tired, but she was warm. She even hazarded opening an eye to the bright light to see where she was.
‘In a bed. Well duh,’ she thought. But she did not recognize the room she was in. Nor did she see Luffy or Sanji. With great effort, she rolled from on her back to onto her side to get a better view of the room she was in. There were books and small jars of odd substances about the room and two doors. One door was closed, with a small draft coming from the cracks. The other was slightly ajar, and as Nami strained to hear over the whistling of the wind outside, she could hear snores.
“Luffy,” she murmured, recognizing the snore immediately. A cold blast of air came from the cracks of the closed door and Nami encircled herself with her arms. “So cold…”
She rolled to the opposite side to block herself from the draft, but continued to shiver.
‘Think warm thoughts,’ she told herself as she rubbed her arms.
Her mind drifted back to the journey up the mountain and her body pressed against Luffy’s. The thought helped, but her limbs still felt like they were made of ice. Drifting farther back, she recalled his arms around her as he swung her around in circles underneath the tarp covering her orange trees. She could almost feel his embrace tightening around her as he’d put her down. In that same day, he’d held her in the throes of passion amidst a thunderstorm, and those memories were enough to bring the pink back to her cheeks.
I can feel you all around me
Thickening the air I'm breathing
She drifted off into a willful sleep, unconsciously pulling arms tighter around her, dreaming that Luffy really was there holding her. It wasn’t until she blinked away blurriness a while later did she realize that someone really was holding her. She knew she wasn’t dreaming this time because they were kissing the back of her neck softly.
She turned her head to get a look at them only to have Luffy grin at her and attempt to kiss her lips. They were chapped and hurt from the contact, so she turned her head forward again and wiggled herself deeper into his embrace.
“You scared me.”
“What?” Nami asked. He’d said it so quietly that she almost didn’t hear.
“You scared me,” he repeated, whispering into her neck. His warm breath made the little hairs stand up there. “When we got to the top of the mountain. I tried to wake you up, but you wouldn’t.”
“I was awake,” she told him. “I tried to tell you but, I guess I was too weak.”
“You’re not weak,” he denied. “You’re so strong. You never give up, no matter how bad it gets.”
Holding on to what I'm feeling
Savoring this heart that's healing
“I think I’m strong because if you,” Nami whispered, drifting off again. The last thing she heard was him ‘humph’ in her ear. When she awoke again, she was alone in the bed but still warm, listening to the sounds of glasses tink-ing against each other. As she rolled over, she wondered if she’d dreamed it all. She felt a lot better, but then again, as she stared at a small reindeer as he mixed medicines, she thought it possible that she could still be hallucinating.
A/N: No idea when the next one will be up. I’m pretty sure this will be a 5 chapter fic though.
