Getting Revenge

Chapter 3
The Pokémon growled, its gray fur bristling as it got ready to charge at them. Jackie looked at Fluke nervously. “Listen, I get you don’t really like me, but you think you could help me? Please?” how weird was this, begging or help from her own Pokémon.

Suddenly the little gray Pokémon ran at them, snarling as it did. With surprising speed Fluke moved out of Jackie’s loose arm and hitting the Pokémon with his large tail. As the Pokémon fell back Jackie remembered her battle with the Zigzagoon.

“Ok Fluke, do anoth-” Before she could finish the command though the wild Pokémon Tackled Fluke, knocking him back a few feet. “Fluke, you ok?!” she asked, worried about her partner. Fluke only rolled his eyes and nodded. This little Pokémon was nothing. He had had worse fight than this. With some more confidence she nodded and tried again. “Ok, pound that thing into the dust!”

“Treeko!” Fluke yelled out, feeling the victory already near with this weak Pokémon. Indeed with one more whack of his tail the dog Pokémon fell to the ground in a daze. Jackie sighed in relief. “Wow…that was over pretty quickly. I can’t believe I got so worried there. I’m pretty good at this!” Fluke glared at her angrily and kicked her ankle, causing her to yelp. “Ok ok, we did a good job. Anyways, let’s get out of here before it wakes up.”

For the most part the rest of their short journey went uninterrupted. And indeed it was a short walk to the next town. The moment they walked around the small cliff the trees were parted, showing a little Town…a very little Town. All of four buildings. “What is it with these tiny Towns?” she said with a frown. “And…wait a second, when we came up here there was no road! And our Town is surrounded by trees except for that one path. How the hell did the truck get around here? Oh, never mind.” She murmured angrily. “Who cares?”

As she walked by she saw two buildings that were different from the other homes. One building had a red roof with the letters P.C. on them, the other had a blue roof with the words Mart. Curiously she stepped into the closest one, the building with the red roof. Stepping inside it was actually a very nice place. There was a tiled peach colored floor with a pokeball shape in the center, a table, some chairs, a bookshelf, a map, a computer and even an escalader leading upstairs. Most notable though was the pink haired woman wearing a blue dress that stood behind a long desk. Beside her was a machine with several slots for holding poke balls.

The moment she walked up the woman smiled and said in a clear, peppy voice “Hello and welcome to the Pokémon Center! We will restore your Pokémon to full health. Would you like to rest your Pokémon?” Jackie blinked and looked down at Fluke who stood by her side, looking around curiously. “Um…sure I suppose how much does it cost?”

“Cost? Oh you must be a new trainer. Healing you Pokémon is absolutely free! We want to make sure you and your friends go out into the world at full health.” The woman said.

Jackie’s eyes went wide at the sound of it. “Wow! Free health care! Wish they had that for humans. By the way, whats your name?”

“Oh, I’m sorry I should have introduced myself. I’m Nurse Joy. Me and my family run every single Pokémon Center in the Hoenn region, as well as many others.”

“Talk about a family business. You must have a huge family!”

“Indeed I do. Mostly women take over the business though…so, shall I take you Pokémon?”

Jackie looked back at Fluke and said “Actually I’m not too sure how to get him into his pokeball…I’m really new at this.”
The nurse only smiled and took the little round ball from her hand. She clicked the button in the middle and the ball opened, Fluke disappearing inside with a flash or red light. “Just like that, though you certainly don’t have to have him inside of it all the time.” After placing the ball on the machine a flash of light appeared under it. Just as quickly Nurse Joy handed her back Fluke. “So…it’s done? That was fast.”

“No need to waste too much time here darling. Being a trainer can get very busy.” Nurse Joy said with a smile. “And I hope to see you again.”

“Yeah you too.” Jackie smiled as she left, the door sliding open for her. She loved being a Pokémon trainer! If fluke got hurt she could just take him here and he would get better! As she walked out of the P.C. an older woman in a blue outfit and a white apron stopped her.

“Hi there, I’m from the Mart. Can I get you to come with me?”

“Actually I have something I’m supposed to be doing-hey!” The woman ignored her and grabbed her arm, smiling warmly as she dragged Jackie up to the blue roofed building. “This is a Pokémon Mart. Just look for out blue roof!”
“And the words on the building…”

“We sell a variety of good, including poke balls for catching Pokémon. Here, I would like you to have this as a promotional item.” Without pausing the woman handed her a little bottle that said Potion on the side. “A potion can be used at anytime, so it’s even more useful than a Pokémon center in certain situations.”

“Wow…this town sure is nice. Look at all this free stuff they hand out.” Hm, she said they sold poke balls. She could try to catch more Pokémon! But she had no money…oh well. With a shrug she moved on, spotting two paths she could take. One to the North and one to the West. The path to the west had a rather nerdy looking fellow examining the area. Curiously she walked over him. Unfortunately when she got too close to the path he ran behind her and pulled her back. “Hey, what the hell are you doing?”
“Wait, you can’t come over here! I just discovered the footprints of a rare Pokémon!”

“Dude, seriously?”

“Yeah, can you not come over here until I’m finished sketching them?”

“Uh…sure, whatever.” As Jacked looked down at the prints she thought they looked rather similar to the nerds own shoes, but she decided not to say anything about it. Well, this only left the North pass now. As she walked up the pass she saw yet another small, yet impassable cliff. “Oh you have to be kidding me!” she screamed. This only left…more grass to run through. She stared at the grassy area as though it were made of poison. She didn’t like not knowing what was in there, ready to bite off her ankles at a moment’s notice! Taking a deep breath she ran through the grass as fast as she could. Stumbling she came to the end and laughed. “Ha! Eat that tall grass!”

Unfortunately when she looked further at the path she saw another cliff and more grass! “Damnit!” Using the same technique she made her way through the grass again and once again met nothing interesting. Well that wasn’t true. Right in front of her now stood that white haired jerk that had made fun of her.

Smirking she walked up to him, tapping his shoulder as he mumbled to himself. “Ok, so it’s this one and that one that live on Route 103…” Felling her hand Brendon jumped, dropping his notes and turned around. “Jackie!” Quickly he bent down, picking up his notes as he looked at her in surprise. “What are you doing here?”

“Your Dad gave me a Pokémon and told me I should go find you. Not that I wanted to, he kind of made me do it…” She muttered angrily.
“Oh…well since we’re here, how about a little battle?” He asked her, taking out his poke ball. “I’ll teach you what being a trainer is all about!”

Jackie fumed as he sent out his Pokémon. It was a little orange bird with tiny wings, a large head and two little feet. She couldn’t help but laugh. “What a weird Pokémon. Well my Fluke is going to kick its ass! I don’t need you to show me how to be a trainer!” Tossing her own poke ball she sent out Fluke. “Ok Fluke, use Pound!” Instead of using Pound though, Fluke began to glow, tiny orbs of energy coming out of the bird. “What the hell was that? Fluke I never told you to do that!”

“It’s a move called Absorb. He probably learned it the last time you guys were fighting. Lucky for me though Torchic is strong against grass moves! Torchic, use Growl!” Torchic opened his beak, a loud growling sound coming from it.

“Stupid…ok Fluke, use Pound! Whatever you did before didn’t work.” Nodding Fluke this time followed her command, coming down hard on the little Torchic. The attack didn’t seem as strong as when it was used against the dog Pokémon though.

Brendon only smiled. “Torchic, Growl again!” Once again Torchic growled and once again Jackie told Fluke to use Pound, but it seemed to do even less damage than before! “What am I doing wrong?” she asked. “Why isn’t his attack doing anything?”

“Because growl weakens a Pokémon’s normal attacks.” He said as his Torchic used another growl. If you keep using Pound I’ll defeat you faster than you can damage me.” Jackie thought as Fluke once again tried to attack, hardly doing any damage. What other attacks did he have? Wait, wasn’t there one…Leer. It was supposed to do something like Growl.

“Ok Fluke, use Leer this time!” Fluke nodded and his eyes flashed, causing Torching to shrink away, as though he was frightened. Once again Torching used growl and Jackie laughed. “Is that the only thing he can do? Fluke, try using Pound again!” Despite the fact that it had little effect she could see the Torchic getting weaker now. As it once again used Growl Jackie commanded Fluke to use Pound again. “We must be getting close to beating him!”

Brendon frowned. “ok Torchic, use Scratch!” No way could he lose to her. He had studied; trained…no way he would lose! To Jackie’s surprise the attack did very little to Fluke, other than annoy him. “Ha! Come on Buddy, we’re almost there! Just keep on Pounding him!” As if realizing they had been on the defensive for too long Torchic tried his best to land heavy blows, and though they were doing more than Flukes attacks, Torchic had just taken too many hits.

Finally it was over. With one last hit Torchic flee to the ground in a daze, Fluke breathing heavily. “Yes! We won!” she screamed happily, picking him up and hugging him tightly to her chest. “I’m so proud of you!”

“Brendon chucked as Fluke tried to escape from her crushing hug. “Huh, Jackie, you’re not too shabby.” He walked up to her and handed her three hundred dollars. “Well, here you go your winnings. I think I get it though. I think I know why my dad has his eye out for you now. Look, you Pokémon already likes you.” He laughed, Fluke being crushed against her chest.

“What? All this money just because I won?” she looked down and saw poor fluke had ceased struggling, as his had been nearly crushed be her. “Fluke! Oh I’m so sorry buddy.” Blushing a little she returned him to his poke ball, deciding he could use some rest.

Brendon smiled and place and hand on her shoulder. “Jackie, I get the feeling that you could befriend any Pokémon with ease.”
There was a moment’s pause and she said “You’re just saying that so I don’t hurt you for what you said to me earlier.”

“No! …Well yes, but I really mean it. You’re a pretty nice person when you’re not threatening to hurt me. Anyway we should head back to the Lab.” Quickly he jumped off the tiny cliff, avoiding the grass. She smiled and looked down at the Poke ball in her hand. She was doing pretty well for herself. Her first fight with a trainer. Putting the money in her bag he ran down after him, stopping in the P.C. to heal Fluke.

Back at the Lab Prof. Birch was waiting for her, Brendon at his side. “Oh, Hi there Jackie! I heard you beat Brendan on your fist try. That’s excellent! Brendan’s been helping me with my research for a long time. He has an extensive history as a trainer already.”

“Really? Because the way he was fighting I could have sworn he was just as new as me.”

“Here Jackie, I ordered this for my research, but I think you should have this PokéDex. It’s a very high-tech tool that automatically makes a record of any Pokémon you have seen or caught. Brendan goes everywhere with it.”

Jackie looked down at the odd little device that fit snuggly in her hand. Now she wouldn’t be so clueless. She would know what the names of the different Pokémon were! When she looked back up Brendan was standing in front of her. Before she could step back he took her hand and put several items in it. “Well, now that you’re a real Pokémon trainer you’ll need these Poke balls.” He had given her five poke balls.

“Why did you give these to me? You didn’t have to.” She said, blushing slightly.

“Well it’s more fun to have a bunch of Pokémon. I thought you might like to have a head start. I’m going to explore all over the place and find different Pokémon. If I find any cool ones you’ll bet I’ll catch them.” She smiled and nodded, putting the balls in her bag. “Thanks, but I’ll always kick your ass. No way I can ever let you defeat me.”

As she walked out she took a shaky breath. She was a Pokémon trainer now…a real trainer! Now the only obstacle left was her mother…
