Chapter 2

Walking out into the bright summer morning, Simkin stopped and looked around, finding the colors brighter than normal. 'Good ol' nostalgia,' he thought to himself. Thinking that he'd like to inspect the road before him before going to see the professor, he walked north of town. There was a trail there that would lead him to the next town, Viridian. As he neared the tall grass marking the head of the trail, a voice suddenly called out behind him.

“Wait!! Stop! Don't walk into the grass!” said an older voice. Turning around quickly, he saw Prof. Cypress hurrying to him, the back of his white lab coat flapping in the wind. “You shouldn't walk in tall grass without your own PokeGirl! You never know when a feral P-” They were interrupted when a tuft of grass rustled right before an attacking Peekabu jumped out at them.

Cypress pushed Simkin out of the way, pulling out an empty PokeBall. Dodging a tackle by the Feral Peekabu, he quickly threw the 'Ball at her. A flash of red light and she was gone, the 'Ball wiggling as it tried to keep the Feral contained. Soon enough, a small 'DING' sounded and it stopped wiggling.

“See?” Cypress said, bending down to pick up the now-full PokeBall. “What would you have done if I wasn't here? This is why you should always be with a 'Girl.”

Nodding, a shaken Simkin was led back to the Professor's laboratory. Following Cypress into the large building, the largest in the small quiet town, Simkin walked past many scientists hard at work with various scientifically inclined PokeGirls. He noticed a few Cyber-Nymphs and Data Dogs working on large computers (or in one case leading a bemused scientist off into a smaller room). Smiling at that sight, with a small pang of envy, he continued following Cypress into the back of the large main room, where he had his office. Inside, the good professor was accosted by a swaggering male voice.

“Grandpa! What took you so long? I've been waiting forever to get my first PokeGirl!” a thin boy said, walking towards them. Simkin saw, to his immense dissatisfaction, that it was Prof. Cypress's grandson, Grady. Moaning silently, Simkin walked over to the table, where a single PokeBall sat.

“Grady? I said to come by later,” Cypress said, a bit confused. “Oh, well.” Turning to Simkin, he said, “So, Simkin, you're ready for your first PokeGirl. Have you given any thought to what you'd like to have?”

Simkin nodded, turning a quizzical eye upon the lone 'Ball. “Well, I really want a Charamanda. Although, if you're out of them, I wouldn't mind having a Squirtitty.”

Cypress nodded, though with a strange look in his eye. “Well, unfortunately we're out of those. Someone came by and even took the last Boobisaur.”

“What?! Really?!?!” Simkin yelled, a wave of sadness coming over him. “No way...”

“Unfortunately it's true. Everybody came by earlier this morning and got theirs,” Cypress told him, patting him on the shoulder. “However, I do have one PokeGirl left.”

“You do?? What is she?” Simkin asked anxiously. He turned to look more closely at the single PokeBall on the long table, as if he could discern her type through it.

“Why don't you find out?” Cypress told him, motioning him to pick it up. “I'm sure you'll be happy with her.”

“But what about me, Grandpa?!” Grady exclaimed, upset at having been left out.

“Don't worry, I'll get you one later,” Cypress told him, still looking at Simkin. Simkin moved closer to the table, excited at having his very first PokeGirl. Reaching over to grasp it, he suddenly found himself sprawled out on the floor, a sharp pain in his side. Looking up, he saw Grady holding the 'Ball, claiming it as his own.

“What the...” Simkin whispered, struggling to stand up. “You..you...You jackass!!” he yelled, arching his arm back to launch a punch at Grady. Cypress hurried over, placing a restraining hand on Simkin's arm.

“Don't worry, Simkin, I have another PokeGirl I can give you,” he quickly said, fingering the newly used PokeBall containing the Peekabu. Pulling him over, Cypress gave Simkin the PokeBall, saying, “Now listen. This PokeGirl is the one I caught earlier when I was getting you. She hasn't been Tamed yet, so is likely to distrust you at first. However, I'm sure you can quickly gain her trust.”

Simkin held the PokeBall reverently, turning it around in his hand. “I'll get her trust, just you watch!” he claimed, tossing it up in the air and catching it.

“Well, you already have your PokeDex, and you seem to have all the items you'll need in your backpack,” Cypress said thoughtfully. “Well... What are you waiting for? Get going and have fun!”

Smiling, Simkin turned to make his way out. However, after only going a few steps, Grady yelled after him, “I challenge you! I bet my PokeGirl is better that yours!” Simkin turned around and faced Grady, smirking.

'This is it, your first match!' he told himself, psyching himself up. 'All you have to do it kick his ass, and you'll have your first win under your belt.' Grinning, he pulled out the PokeBall and looked at Grady. “You sure you wanna try me?” he asked, thinking to pay him back for all those instances Grady had teased him in the past.

His only answer was a flash of red light and “Go, PokeBall!!!” Out of the flash came a small Eva PokeGirl, her tail waving happily. Gripping his own PokeBall, Simkin shouted out, “Go, Peekabu!!”, throwing it towards the Eva.

'Oh, crap,' Prof. Cypress said, pulling a small device out of his pocket. 'I sure hope this works...' Pushing the button, a strange humming filled the room, cutting through all other sounds. Watching the battle scene unfold, he was pleased to see that the PokeBall holding the Peekabu didn't open.

“What happened?” Simkin asked worriedly, rushing over to pick up his PokeBall. “Is it broken?? Did I not do it right?”

“No, no,” Cypress said, walking over to the boys. “I stopped it with a new device I built. It's an Anti-Release Device, which stops all PokeBalls in it's area of effect to not release the PokeGirl inside.” Turning to Grady, his look changed to a more serious face. “As for you, young man. You know that there is no Battling within this building! Furthermore, do you think that your Domesticated Eva could have a chance against a newly caught Feral?? You should thank your lucky stars that I'm not going to take her away from you. Now put her back in that PokeBall and leave.”

Mumbling angrily, Grady recalled his Eva and stormed out, pushing aside an aide who didn't get out of his way fast enough. Looking back when he reached the door, he yelled to Simkin, “This isn't over, not by a long shot!” With that, he slammed the door behind him as he left.

“I swear...” Cypress muttered under his breath, turning back to Simkin. “Now then, I think you need to tame that young Peekabu of yours if you wish to battle with her.” He chuckled as Simkin blushed slightly at the thought, figuring correctly that some of it was being told he needed to. “We have a good room for you, if you wish to use it.” Simkin nodded and was led over to a small room, with rubber padding on the walls and floor. “Just lock the door behind me and leave when you want.” With a wink and a nod, Cypress left them to it, thinking back fondly to his days as a Tamer.
