Auren looked up from his Pokegear, and fell into his hotel bed. He had left the Veilstone Gym and quickly made his way back to his room. Not long after his arrival, the data sheet had arrived, and Auren set an hour alarm on his phone. For the last thirty minutes or so Auren had been thinking about the information he had read four times already. He had every detail memorized. He simply couldn’t believe the final entry in the information he had been sent. The reason he was hunting this particular person seemed unreal. He scrolled down and read it once more.
Crimes:
Murder - Twenty counts. Eighteen children, two adults. SEE SECTION: DETAILS.
DETAILS:
At approximately 0900, March 17th, outside of Hearthome City, Alandra Estelles attacked a bus full of children, each a member of a children’s choir. There were twenty people on board. Eighteen children, two adults. One the driver, the other the choir leader. Her reasons for attacking are currently unknown, though she likely intended to destroy the faith of the local chapter of the Church of Arceus. Most of the bodies were badly burned, and could only be ID’ed by dental records. Somehow, one child survived the attacks, likely because she was shielded by a much more obese member of the choir. She suffered third degree burns over ninety percent of her body, but she recovered enough to give information on the killer and the Pokemon that was used before she succumbed to her injuries. When searching for the whereabouts of anyone matching the description of the killer, local authorities confirmed that one Alandra Estelles had rented a hotel room the night before the attack in question, but could not be found for questioning. When interrogated, the desk clerk who had checked her in gave a description matching up to the little girl‘s. The phone number Alandra had given was also fake, so she cannot be contacted or traced. Once the police pulled up her trainer id it was confirmed that she had a Blaziken on her team, the same Pokemon reported to authorities. All tracking attempts by the local…
Auren stopped reading there, having read the information enough for it to be committed to memory, and rubbed his temples as he considered the data. What kind of person would do such a thing? No wonder his employer had offered such a high reward. The Blaziken alone would net him at least one hundred and forty thousand dollars. He could make a quarter million from this single job. Money didn’t really matter to him at the moment, though. All he could think about was killing the sick fuck who thought it would ever be alright to murder innocent children. She had last been seen in Hearthome, but that was also where the crime was committed. Considering it was currently May 27th, she had been gone from there for over two months. Plenty of time to move far away from the place, possibly even into a different region. Auren doubted that possibility, however. If she was some kind of anti-Arcean extremist, she’d stick around Sinnoh to attempt to damage the church further. The church had attempted to let the police track her, but they failed. That was always when Auren was called in. When it seemed like the authorities were going to be insufficient someone would decide to fund a search on their own, and they almost never wanted the mark to be taken alive.
“This one could take a while, couldn’t it?” He looked over to his Electivire, whose eyes practically had flames burning in them. She had a strong sense of justice, and knowing someone was running around free after killing so many people, so many children even, had her blood boiling. Auren could tell she was having to focus on not letting electricity build up within her. “I’ll have to call Maylene sometime and feed her some lie about why we won’t be back as soon as we’d hoped if it seems like we won’t be returning soon.” Suddenly, Auren’s phone began to beep; the alarm he had set was going off. He looked at the screen to see the information he had been reading delete itself, gone forever.
“We’ll head out tomorrow morning. We’ll go to Hearthome and see if we can find any leads that the authorities might have missed. I’m not sure where we’ll be going after that. Hearthome is about three days from here if we move at a decent pace, but we can probably make it to Solaceon Town in a day and a half, and rest there.” Auren knew the route well. In the ten years since he’d given up on the league, he had traveled the core routes of Sinnoh many times. He knew what Pokemon he might face on every route, and what to pack for each route. Routes 215, 210, and 209 were all pretty simple, none really required any special preparation.
“I know I said we weren’t going to rush to do this job, but I feel like the sooner we track down this psychopath, the better. In fact, why don’t we rest for a while, then head out immediately. We’ll stop by the Pokemart once we leave and grab the necessary supplies, and we’ll get on the move.” Electivire nodded in agreement, and both trainer and Pokemon retired for the night. Auren thought about leaving then and there, figuring he wouldn’t be able to sleep anyway. However, before he could change his mind and get up, he was sound asleep. In her own bed, Tonitrus suddenly felt very on edge, before falling into a deep sleep herself.
-----------------------------------
His face, as well as multiple other places on his body, ached. The man on top of him had been asking him questions, and since no responses were given he had been beating him brutally. Finally, sound began to creep back into Auren’s brain. The shock of seeing his father limp in the hands of a monster was wearing off.
“Bring her over here! Let’s see how he responds to that.” The man said, a cruel smile decorated his features. Auren’s senses came flooding back to him as the Nidoqueen walked over, dragging a very beaten Elekid by one of its horns. As the female Drill Pokemon stopped, it carelessly dropped the much smaller Electric Pokemon in front of Auren. He could only see out of his left eye, the man had punched him in the right eye almost immediately and it had already swollen shut. Auren’s brain kicked into gear as he realized what was happening.
“Tonitrus!” He shouted, horrified at the state she was in. “What have you done to her? What have you done to my father? Why are you here and what is…oomph!” Auren was cut off as the man forcefully kicked him in the ribs.
“It has a name, does it?” The man said excitedly with a crazy smile. “Well, well, well. What do you think of that, Evie?” He turned and looked at the woman who’d be standing beside him earlier. Auren couldn’t help but turn his attention to her next, and noticed she looked very similar to the man who had attacked him. Both had dark hair, and piercing blue eyes. She was shorter than the man, and not much taller than Auren himself.
“Well, Evan, it looks like the old saying ‘Like father like son’ seems to ring very true in this case.” Now it was her turn to smile, and shivers went up Auren’s spine when he saw it. It was the same insane smile the man, Evan, wore.
“So you little bastard,” Evan said, turning his attention back to Auren, “are you like your late father? Do you love Pokemon too, you weirdo?” Auren looked up at the man, and couldn’t help but notice a necklace around the man’s neck. Hanging from a rather simple silver chain was a pendant of some sort made of a white material - Auren would later learn it was ivory. It was primarily a large X. However, in the center there was a circle, so instead of crossing the lines of the X became one. On both sides of the S, near the points, curved lines connected the top and bottom.
“Of course I love Pokemon, why wouldn’t I?” Auren stated without even thinking, anger in his voice. Before he could say anything else, however, something about the man’s question struck him. The man had said ‘Late father’. Late. The word echoed in his head as he realized what it meant. They had killed his father. Auren’s eyes widened, and he was about to yell in anguish when Evan’s foot connected with his ribs once more. Auren felt a few of them give way and crack, and breathing became very painful.
“Well, that’s a good enough answer for me.” Evie said, an insane look in her eyes. She walked over to the limp Elekid and drew a knife from its holster on her side. As Auren looked on, he noticed she too was wearing the pendant necklace. As Auren watched in horror, she grabbed his Elekid by the fur and yanked her head up. Tonitrus was barely conscious, and could only whimper small parts of her name. “Arceus judges you, boy, as he judged your father. Those who love their Pokemon are abominations, and shall be punished by his holy might.” As she finished her small speech, she ran her knife across the Electric Pokemon’s neck, slitting her throat.
Auren screamed in protest, through all the pain in his body, through broken rips and battered flesh, and sprang to his feet. Before he could even attempt to get near his Pokemon, Evan laid him low with a sweeping kick, and was upon him.
“Arceus is a forgiving god, however. You are young, and aren’t yet set in your evil ways. You have simply had the wrong type of influence. However, you are a sinner and must be marked. Evie, be a dear and show the boy what I mean?” Evan said in an overly sweet voice. The woman let go of the heavily bleeding Pokemon and walked over, still holding the bloody knife.
“You who have loved your Pokemon shall never be allowed to love any other in the same way, not under the eyes of the all powerful Arceus. The holy ceremony given to those in love shall forever be out of your grasp, as you will be unable to exchange blessed rings.” She took a knee beside Auren, who was still pinned by Evan. The much stronger man pinned Auren’s hand to the ground with his knee, and Auren had no strength to resist. Before Auren could figure out what was happening, he felt a searing pain in his hand, and let out a piercing scream.
“There, he is marked.” Evie stated as she held up his ring finger. “See this, boy, and know you will never know the sacred bond between a woman and a man.” She held up his finger, but Auren couldn’t see it. Tears were flowing from his open eye, and pain was clouding his mind. As the weight on his arm lifted, he blacked out, the darkness taking him mercifully away.
-------------------------------
Auren shot up in his bed, awakening from his nightmare. He was breathing heavily, and tears had stained his pillow. The dream had felt almost real, like he was reliving the past. He looked at his left hand, where he was missing his ring finger. He quickly calmed his breathing, and let go of the painful memory. He thought back to right after that time, when he had woken up in a hospital. Apparently, the police had arrived moments after Auren had passed out. The fire had caused a few people to call in, and when they arrived the criminals had fled the scene. Auren was quickly admitted to the hospital, and had been treated for internal bleeding, three broken ribs, and of course a missing finger. His world had been utter chaos when he awoke. His father had been killed, his home had been burned, and his Elekid…Auren shuddered when he remembered the pure, chilling terror that had run through him that day. The nurse had came in almost immediately after he had woken, and it took all his strength to mutter one word, “Elekid.”
“Well, it’s not looking good,” she had said to him, “she has lost too much blood, and we’re having trouble stopping the bleeding from her neck. We’ve called in a trainer with an Electabuzz who is willing to give blood, but it’s still going to be close. They severed her vocal cords so even if she survives, she’ll never speak again. I’m so sorry.” Auren remembered the nurses face, the pain she felt was very real. For some reason, he remembered that made him feel just a bit better. Maybe it was good for me to see that some people were good people at the time. Auren rubbed his temples, which was becoming a bit of a routine. Why do I keep waking up with these headaches? He looked at his gear, and found it was almost 4am. He decided he had slept enough, and that it was time to get on the trail of his target.
“Tonitrus, up and at em’!” Auren looked at the sleeping Pokemon, and was shocked to see her face contorted into one of fear and pain. He jumped up and went to her side, gently running his hand through the fur on her head. “Tonitrus, wake up girl. What’s wrong.” Suddenly, her eyes shot open, and electricity flooded Auren’s body. He went stiff and fell to the floor, momentarily paralyzed from the shock. The Thunderbolt Pokemon jumped out of the bed and quickly picked him up, putting him on the bed. After a moment or two, he regained control of his body. She looked at him apologetically, and he managed to laugh a bit. “It’s ok, girl. I didn’t mean to frighten you.” Tonitrus shook her head at that, telling him he hadn’t scared her. “Were you having a bad dream?” He asked his Pokemon. She nodded, and he pressed a bit further. “Was it about back then? When you had been hospitalized?” She nodded again. Auren suddenly became paranoid. What were the chances that they were having the same nightmare, about the same event? Something was wrong with that, but he just couldn’t place what it was.
“Anyway, I figure we might as well get going. I’ve slept enough, if you’re feeling alright we can hit the road.” She nodded and stood, stretching her powerful muscles, sending electricity to all her limbs. Her mouth opened wide with her last stretch, showing her fangs, and Auren imagined her letting out a mighty roar. He knew that wouldn’t happen though, and she finished silently, as always. He was so happy she had pulled through all those years ago, but he would always be saddened by the fact that she’d never make a sound again. He often wondered what she sounded like now.
He shook his head, it wouldn’t do to let negative thoughts linger. He stood up, and got dressed. After looking around and making sure all of his belongings were packed in his backpack, Auren headed to the receptionist’s desk. He paid his bill, a mere $320, and was on the streets on his way to Hearthome.
-----------------------------
“The target is leaving the apartment. We’ve intercepted the transmission he received, and the plan needs to change. This isn’t what we’ve thought.” A woman’s voice spoke into the radio.
“Irrelevant. Priority hasn’t changed, regardless of the data. Do what must be done.” The voice came back.
The female bit her lip, and cursed inwardly. “Roger that. Proceeding with Operation: Electric Boogaloo.” The female stood up, and hesitated in waking her companions. “Mercury, we’re changing the plan. I know what we’re supposed to do, but I just have to know if it’s right. That’s what our group was built around, right? Justice?”
[I will do whatever you think is right, and I agree with you. If we only follow orders and don’t think for ourselves, we really aren’t much better than him, are we?]
“My thoughts exactly,” she answered, a smile on her face, “now let’s wake the others. All six of us need to be ready to mobilize in less than ten minutes.”
-------------------------------
Auren walked out of the Pokemart, his bag packed with rations and things he might need. He never took chances, and had stocked up on antidotes and such before leaving, even if the chances that he’d need them were less than one percent. Better safe than sorry. Not long after than, Auren and his electric partner were leaving the city behind them. The sun was already beginning to rise, making everything a shade of gray. It was Auren’s favorite time to travel. He could see, but it wasn’t too bright out. Not much was out and about to slow him down, either. Auren wasn’t new to traveling, nor was he out of shape. A lot of the journey to Hearthome would be at a brisk pace, with Tonitrus leading the way and Auren close behind, jogging in a line so that anything that might attack would meet the electric powerhouse head on.
The duo had been jogging for about ten minutes before Auren spoke, breaking the relative silence about them. “How far do you think we’ll have to go on this one? Hopefully we don’t have any leads that point to Snowpoint. I don’t mind it being a bit cold, but even while it’s Spring down here, that place will still have snow on the ground. I don’t have any appropriate clothes.” Tonitrus simply listened to her trainer talk. She knew he wasn’t really trying to start a conversation, it was more likely that he was simply talking to pass the time. She didn’t mind, though, she always enjoyed listening to him ramble, even if he was complaining about random details. “I wouldn’t mind a trip back to Sunyshore, though. We could relax on the beach for a few days, catch some rays.” She cocked an eyebrow at this, and turned to see him smiling at her. It was unusual for Auren to spend time out in the sun, he had never liked it very much. “Totally joking, just so you know.” She rolled her eyes.
“Is that a person?” He said, his tone changing from aloof to serious immediately. Tonitrus was one of the few friends Auren had, and he was only really completely open when the two of them were alone. Ahead of the two was what appeared to be a woman with a head of bright red hair. The duo slowed to a walk so they wouldn’t be alarming to other trainers who might be about. While it was rare to encounter trainers early in the morning, it wasn’t something that hadn’t happened before. As they got closer, the woman came their way. “Damn it, she’s going to challenge us to a battle, I can see it in her eyes. We don’t have time for this.” However, when she was about fifteen feet away, she stopped. Auren stopped as well, trying to figure out what she wanted.
“Auren Cole. We need to talk.” She stated more than suggested. Auren was taken by surprise, but hid it well.
“How do you know who I am?” He responded, putting his left hand in his pocket. It was a habit he had formed years ago to keep people from asking questions. “I’ve definitely never met you before, so mind explaining yourself?” The woman before him took a deep breath and closed her eyes for a moment. When she opened them, they showed her resolve.
“I am Alandra Estelles, and I have stopped you to tell you the truth.” She started. This time, Auren was visibly surprised. He tensed up, like he was ready to battle, and there was no doubt he could launch an attack on her before she could be prepared to defend herself. “I know what you think I did, and I have come to tell you the truth. My Pokemon are all in their balls, and I only have my Blaziken with me. I hoped you would be reasonable if I didn’t present a threat.” Auren wasn’t sure what was going on. His mark was right in front of him, and he had barely gotten out of sight of the city’s tallest buildings. She was standing here, defenseless, and he couldn’t understand why.
“Speak, then. I’ll hear what you have to say. Don’t think I’m going to turn over to your side, I don’t murder the innocent for some holy war.” He said harshly. The only thing he could logically think of was that she was going to try to get him to join her. If that was the case, then she had made his job real easy.
“Actually, you do.” She stated in a matter of fact tone, and Auren thought he detected a trace of…anger? “You have been fooled, Auren Cole. Every target you’ve hunted from your most recent employer has been framed, each was innocent of the crimes you were told they committed. You have been lied to repeatedly, and I know you killed them because you were seeking justice. However, you have been made into one of the monsters you’ve thought you were hunting.” Auren was trying to figure out what angle this woman was working, how telling him this farce of a story would work in her favor. Then, he remembered the look on his last target’s face. The look of confusion Ted had given him. Auren wasn’t convinced of this woman’s story, but suddenly a lot of pieces were making sense.
“You’re telling me I’m a murderer? Well, technically you’re right, I suppose. But, I’ve only killed those that needed to be brought to justice and punished for their horrific crimes. Speaking of, if they didn’t commit the crimes like you say, what reason would there have been for me to be paid to kill them?” Auren knew he had her now, she couldn’t make up an excuse for each of them. He was waiting for her first slip, and in that instant Tonitrus would fry her where she stood.
“They were all members of an organization that I myself am in. There is so much you don’t know about the people you work for. Their true goals, their real motivations. I can’t tell you what they’re planning right now, but we’re a group intent on fighting them to the end.” She said. It was too thin for Auren. It was easy to lie when there were no specifics, he knew. He did it all the time when he was seeking information on a mark.
“Well, that’s terribly convenient isn’t it? I’m actually working for the bad guys, but you can’t tell me why. That’s some very detailed reasoning you’ve got there.” He said sarcastically.
“It’s true. We hacked your Pokegear to monitor you contact with them. Before last night, we were ready to kill you. We believed you were hunting us for what we were. Then I read the message you were sent, and I understood the truth. I’ve taken a terrible risk confronting you, I know I can’t beat you alone. But, I had to know the truth. And I can see it. If you knew the truth, you wouldn’t be doing this, and yes I do think you’d make a powerful ally. You could help save everyone, and make up for the horrible acts you’ve unknowingly committed. Because of you, we’ve lost some of the best of our group, and that could be the end for us. I understand you’re hesitant to believe me, but please think about what I’m saying. I know you’re not a mindless puppet.” She said, and Auren almost believed the pleading look in her eyes was genuine.
“See, there it is. You want me to join you. I told you already, I’m not into murdering innocents to get my point across. If you read my information, then you understand that I know why you killed those kids. You wanted to demoralize the church, and cause fear in its members. I also know that my employer is a member of the church, and is of high standing. See, you’ve basically told me you’re trying to destroy the church, and that all fits in perfectly with what I know. You said you thought I was hunting you for what you are? Well, I am. I’m hunting you because you’re murderers.” Auren said. He was about done talking. While this woman was apparently a very good actor, he wouldn’t let down his guard. Looking at her now, she LOOKED saddened, but she was bluffing. She had to be. The thought of Ted assaulted his mind once again.
“No, you’re wrong. When I said ‘hunting us for what we were, I was referring to…’” she was interrupted by a man shouting loudly at the two of them, before running out of the bushes to stand beside Alandra. He was a large man, standing at least six and a half feet tall, and probably weighing nearly three hundred pounds. There was no fat to be seen on his body, and he wore nothing other than a pair of ragged fighter pants. Beside him stood a powerful looking Machamp, which seemed to be glaring daggers at Auren.
“What are you doing Alandra? We have orders to kill this bastard! How can you stand here and talk to this murdered!?” The man practically shouted. Auren was confused now, he had no idea who this man was. Shortly after he made an appearance, four more people came out as well, all clearly breaking a sweat from trying to keep up with the large man. “Now we’ve lost the element of surprise, and we’re going to have to do this the hard way!” He boomed.
“Please, calm down Frank,” Alandra said, “he doesn’t know the truth! We can make him see what he’s done, and I’m sure we can resolve this without violence. Please, let me finish talking to him. He didn’t attack me as soon as he found out who I was, if he was the cold blooded killer we originally thought he was then I wouldn’t even be alive still.” Auren watched the scene as it unfolded, he didn’t know what to do. He looked to Tonitrus, but she too seemed confused. He quickly took in the new situation.
Standing before him was the target he was supposed to eliminate. She was trying to convince him that he wasn’t doing what he thought he was doing. More importantly, there were now multiple people with her, and they all seemed to be together. He watched as the other four released their Pokemon, and he became even more nervous over the whole situation. He knew she had a high level Blaziken, but it wouldn’t be a problem for his Electivire. Now, however, there were at least six Pokemon to deal with, and they all looked rather formidable. The man, Frank, had a Machamp that was bulging with muscle. One woman had released a Torterra, something that would be difficult for his electric Pokemon to deal with, being part ground. Looking more closely, the woman looked very similar to Gardenia, though he hadn’t seen her in ten years. The other three trainers had released a Lopunny, a Glaceon, and a Froslass. None of them looked very week, either. Auren knew Tonitrus was strong, but even she might not be able to take on these six Pokemon at once. Auren’s hand grasped one of the Pokeballs in his pocket, ready to use it if it seemed they would attack him at once.
“Please, everyone, listen to me!” Alandra spoke to the whole group, “We have to at least try to talk to him. He could be do so much towards saving the region.”
She is a really good actor. Hell, she’s not even trying to convince me directly anymore, instead she is talking to the others, and they all look…wait, they look confused as well. What’s going on? Auren was genuinely confused now. Who the hell are these people? “I hate to interrupt your meeting,” Auren said to the group, “but who the hell are you people?” Frank turned very quickly towards Auren, and if looks could kill, Auren was sure he’d be dead.
“Like it’s any business of yours, you fucking psychopath! You have any idea how many of my closest friends you’ve slaughtered? And for what? Because they were different than you? Because they had found love with a Pokemon? Who the fuck are you to judge anyone, little man?” Frank said, angrily. That wasn’t what was on Auren’s mind though. His mind had wrapped around one thing, and one thing only. These people were apparently all Pokemon lovers. Auren thought back to each mark. Each had used a Pokemon of the opposite gender, except for one. That mark was openly gay, so that didn’t discount what the huge man in front of him was saying. Auren had always killed the Pokemon first, and now that he thought about it, each trainer had seemed to give up the will to live after that. They never brought out another team member, even if they had them. Auren’s face went pale as it all fell into place in his head. This woman, Alandra…she could be telling the truth. If they were Pokemon lovers, than the church would want them gone. They were all rather strong, so the church would want someone who could be counted on to take them out, and Auren’s Electivire was one of the single strongest non-legendary Pokemon in the region.
“Wait…wait a minute,” Auren stumbled with his words, he wasn’t worried about appearing calm and collected at the moment, “if what you’re saying is true then…then I’m…I’ve been…”
“Killing innocent people, you bastard!” Frank yelled. “And if you think I’m just gonna let it slide, then you’ve got another thing coming!” At this, he charged, ignoring Alandra screaming for him to wait. His Machamp was right behind him, charging to attack the Thunderbolt Pokemon that stood with Auren. Auren’s mind was such a mess that he barely managed to dive out of the way of the charging man before he ran over him. He looked back to see if the group was going to attack him, but they all seemed to be confused on how to act. Alandra had released her Blaziken, be it too was waiting to see what would happen. Auren quickly got his bearings back, and was in the fight.
“Look, I don’t want to fight you yet. If what you’re saying is true, than I have to make it right somehow!” Frank launched into attack mode, throwing strong punches and kicks in Auren’s direction. Auren was forced to go on the defensive, dodging the surprisingly quick man’s attacks. Auren was no slouch, he had trained to fight for a few years and frequently sparred with Tonitrus. However, he didn’t want to fight this man, and wasn’t utilizing his training to the fullest. That’s when Frank’s attack managed to break through, and Auren caught a brutal kick to his abdomen. He was launched from the force of the kick, and hit the ground hard. He was quickly back on his feet when he looked over to see Tonitrus finishing her fight with the Machamp. Auren hadn’t seen the fight, but he could tell the Machamp had been no match for the powerful Thunderbolt Pokemon. Then he noticed that she was going in for the final blow, focusing her energy to destroy the Pokemon that had threatened her trainer.
“Tonitrus, don’t kill it!” He yelled to his Pokemon, who looked back at him with a look that instantly turned to horror. Auren turned back to Frank just before the large man launched a heavy punch right into Auren’s right eye. Auren’s world flickered, and he barely managed to stay conscious. He jumped away from the large man, but his balance was all wrong, he was disoriented. As he jumped back, he fell into a backwards roll, and when he tried to come to his feet his momentum continued backwards, forcing him to roll again. This time, he stopped on his knees to see the man charging him again. He was sure this man was going to break his neck, and he didn’t have time to respond. Then, someone stepped in front of him, and her fiery red hair was all his brain could process.
“Frank, stop this now! Can’t you see that he’s lost the will to fight us? He understands the truth, at least more than he did before. And your Machamp would be cooked right now if he hadn’t called off his Electivire. He even named her, Frank! I don’t think he’s that different from us, after all.” Alandra was furious. She was second in command, and Frank had no authority to disobey her orders right now. As her words sunk in, Frank seemed to calm considerably, looking over at his Machamp. The large, four armed Pokemon was lying on the ground and looked considerably beaten, but was alive. The brief pause gave Auren time to shake off the discombobulating effects of the hard haymaker that had already started to close up his right eye. In an instant, a furious Electivire was at his side. Auren had never seen her so angry, so emotional. Electricity shot between her two tails, and was arcing off to strike nearby trees. He had doubted her before, but now Auren was sure that right now Tonitrus could destroy every person and Pokemon here.
“Easy, easy. I’m alright,” Auren said to try to comfort his enraged Pokemon. She relaxed a bit, but she was still holding on to a lot of energy. Alandra turned to look at Auren, and she winced when she saw his eye.
“I’m sorry about that, Frank is a little…angry at you. You have to understand, the people you’ve killed, they were our friends. I know why you did it now and I can’t blame you. Still, it’s hard to stand here and see you after we planned to kill you. You’ve been fooled for too long, and we want to help you make up for what you’ve done. Do you believe us, now?” She asked, a look of hope in her eyes that Auren couldn’t dismiss as acting.
“I’m…at least willing to listen to the entire story. I feel like you’re telling me the truth, but if that’s the case…I’m a bigger monster than you were falsely made out to be. If all you say is true, then I need to know what’s going on, and why the Sinnoh Region seems to need saving. So, I don’t mind listening to anything you have to say.” Auren said, sounding almost depressed. Am I a monster…
It was at this moment that Frank, as well as the four people behind him and their Pokemon, collapsed to the ground.
“Well, well, well, how disappointing. I was hoping you’d be a good boy and just kill this girl.” A strange, evil voice made the hair on Auren’s neck stand on end. He looked at Tonitrus to see a frightened look on her face, something he’d never seen while she was awake. “I’m glad I followed you here. You’ve not only led me to the girl, but you’ve given me five other members of the resistance. This will cripple those who oppose our plans. I have to thank you, Auren.” When the voice stopped this time, a shadow formed on the ground a few yards away from Auren and Alandra. After a moment, a pair of light blue eyes formed in the shadow, and a few seconds later a strange creature materialized from it. It’s head had a fog-like flowing white top, and below its eyes and face sat a spiky red ring that went all around, like a necklace. The rest of its body was black, with flowing black shoulders and what seemed like a torn skirt. Where there should be legs there was nothing, the creature simply floated where it was.
“You…” Auren started, a horrified look on his face. Seeing this creature, this Pokemon, made a few pieces fall into place. “You’re the one who kept causing me to have those nightmares, and Tonitrus as well. You’ve been following me, to make sure I did my job. Is that why I’m never questioned by my employer?”
“Indeed, I’ve watched you every time. And as for your nightmares? I’m terribly sorry, but we all have to eat you know?” The Pokemon said, obviously enjoying seeing Auren squirm.
“What are you, and why can you talk?” Alandra finally spoke up, confused as to what was happening. Auren wasn’t confused though. He was terrified. He knew what this Pokemon being here meant. His hand grabbed a Pokeball in his pocket, and he switched it over, ready to release the Pokemon inside. He looked at Tonitrus, who was also quite shaken.
“My dear, I am the stuff nightmares are made of. I can speak because I am a Pokemon above most others, a different breed, if you will. You may have heard of me, I go by the name Darkrai?” The Pitch-Black legend was just toying with them, getting its sick kicks from watching the effects that his statement had on them both. Auren already knew what this Pokemon was, he had heard enough stories to put two and two together.
“What are you doing here, Darkrai?” Auren asked, although he knew the answer.
“What’s that? Oh, I thought I had made myself quite clear. I have come to do the job that you were supposed to do. Sadly, since you seem to be ready to take their side in this, you will have to join them in death. I’d say it’ll be quick and painless, but everyone here is already experiencing horrific nightmares from my Dark Void.” This Pokemon exuded an evil aura, and Auren was terrified. Tonitrus was strong. Very strong. But not even she could beat a Legendary Pokemon on her own. There was no way. He’d have to use his second team mate, and hope his Thunderbolt Pokemon could hold this monster at bay long enough for his hasty plan to work.
“Tonitrus, Thunder!” He called out to the Pokemon beside him, and she immediately unleashed an immense burst of Electricity towards the Legend. Darkrai chuckled a bit, and in his supreme overconfidence, let the attack hit him dead on. While Darkrai was distracted, Auren quickly brought his other Pokemon out. He looked it dead in the eyes, and the small creature nodded its understanding of the situation and the plan, then it went to work.
“I must say, your attack is almost on par with that of the mighty Zapdos. I’ve never faced a non-legendary Pokemon with such strength, I’m glad this won’t be too boring!” Darkrai sounded mildly angry, as if it hadn’t expected the attack to be as powerful as it was. However, it also didn’t seem terribly hurt, and now it was ready for a fight. Darkrai disappeared from the field for a moment, and Auren knew what was happening.
“It’s using Faint Attack, look out!” Sure enough, a second later Darkrai appeared in Tonitrus’ shadow. She jumped out of the way of the attack, but then it launched a Dark Pulse. She couldn’t dodge quickly enough and took the full attack. Tonitrus skid across the ground from the force of the attack, then quickly righted herself.
“Ho ho, so you can take an attack pretty well too! You are an impressive specimen. I’m going to kill your owner, oh yes. But you, I think we could use a Pokemon as strong as you on our side.” Darkrai taunted. Tonitrus barely kept her cool. This monster was planning on killing her owner, and she wouldn’t have any of that. Auren could see what attack she was planning on using, and he was sure Darkrai wouldn’t expect it. In fact, he wasn’t sure when she had used it last. It wasn’t an attack that should be used against a stronger opponent, because it had to charge first. Fortunately, she had been charging the very attack in the fight against Machamp, and she should have the energy still stored. It wasn’t even a move the Thunderbolt Pokemon should know. Auren knew, though, that she had inherited it from her father, a prize-fighting Hitmonchan. If she messed it up though…no, Auren refused to think of the consequences.
“Let’s see how many you can take!” Darkrai disappeared again, attempting the same move. Auren hoped that it was as cocky as it seemed, and would try to use the same strategy again because it was overconfident in its abilities. As it appeared in Tonitrus’ shadow it again launched its Faint Attack. Tonitrus hopped away, a shorter distance this time. As if on cue Darkrai again launched its Dark Pulse attack, confidant in a repeat performance. However, the attack dissipated before it ever hit Electivire, who had quickly used Protect immediately after the Faint Attack. Before Darkrai could figure out exactly what was going on, Electivire was right in its face, and then she unleashed her attack. Darkrai couldn’t have known the pain it was about to be dealt by a mere non-legendary Pokemon. However, Tonitrus’ Focus Punch showed Darkrai the extent of her immense attack power. As a Dark type, fighting moves were one of its only real weaknesses. Such a high powered fighting move from such a powerful opponent caused Darkrai to screech in pain, before turning back into a shadow and disappearing altogether.
“We don’t have long, Tonitrus return!” For the first time in years, Auren returned his Electivire to her ball. He knew it’d be easier for his other Pokemon to get them to safety if it were just the two of them. He watched as Alandra withdrew her still sleeping Blaziken, then disappeared. He was all alone now, all the other people had already been moved far away. As Auren waited for his friend to return, Darkrai began to reform.
“HOW DARE YOU! HOW DARE YOU ATTACK ME LIKE THAT! I AM A LEGEND, YOU ARE A MERE CHILD COMPARED TO ME! I WILL PICK YOU APART, I WILL CAUSE YOU ENDLESS NIGHTMARES! I. AM. DARKRAI!” As Darkrai reformed, it looked around the field to find the Pokemon who had caused it more pain than it had ever known. It would torture that electric nuisance until its mind came apart at the seams. However, she was nowhere to be found. Instead, it turned its attention to her trainer, who was standing there with a grin on his face. The insolent human had the audacity to give Darkrai the middle finger. It was then that Darkrai noticed the small Pokemon standing beside him, and before it could take any action the human and the Pokemon disappeared from existence, leaving Darkrai all alone.

A/N: I think this is the longest chapter I’ve written so far, and it’s also the first that I really checked for grammar problems. I was rushing the last two, sorry about that. This one should be a bit better.
I’m really enjoying writing this story, and I really hope everyone enjoys reading it! I’ve got it planned out pretty well so far, but I constantly think of new things to put in it. I don’t know why I didn’t start writing sooner.
Anyway, who knows what Auren’s second Pokemon is? It should be kind of obvious. You’ll find out in the next chapter!
