Aya eyed the clock with something close to hatred. The bed was warm and rather comfortable, Schuldich had finally given in and passed out in an exhausted parody of repose, and Aya was going to have to pry himself up and out of Schuldich’s arms in mere minutes. Maybe Schuldich had wandered into a deep enough sleep to allow Aya to wriggle free…the experimental movement only prompted Schuldich’s arms to tighten the grip they had on Aya’s waist, sent a wordless inquiry through Aya’s consciousness.

“I have to get up, Schu. I promised Omi I would help him study.”

‘Lie.’ Schuldich started to pull himself back to wakefulness, concerned.

“I promised Omi I would meet with him at nine. Its half past eight. Let me up.”

‘Stay.’

“Stay asleep, Schu. I’ll be back soon.”

Uncertainty and anger ghosted through the room as Schuldich’s eyes twitched fitfully behind his eyelids.

Aya sighed. “I’m tired. You’re tired. One of us should get some rest. You sleep. I’ll be back soon. I promise.”

Schuldich drew back reluctantly; making sure Aya was made aware of every nuance of his displeasure. It was like being force-fed a rather surly temper tantrum, and Aya wasn’t quite sure what to make of the sensation. “Did I say, at some point, that I liked you better unconscious? I might have lied.” Aya wrinkled his nose at the smell of stale beer, courtesy of Schuldich’s discarded shirt, and fumbled around for a shirt of his own, anything with a collar high enough to hide the mark on his neck Schuldich had left in a fit of trying not to scream. There were some talks Aya did not want to have with his team this evening, some explanations he didn’t feel necessary.

They wouldn’t believe him anyway. His virtue was besmirched by Schuldich’s mere presence.

Aya pulled on a serviceable shirt with only a slight frown. Maybe he could convince them he was cold…

“I’ll be back soon.” Aya pulled the door shut, made sure it was locked, and smiled slightly, wondering who the lock was supposed to protect; the sleeping telepath or anyone unfortunate enough to stumble across him.

“Abyssinian has left the target.”

“Move in.”

There were few things in life Schuldich hated as much as being watched when he wasn’t putting on a show. It started as an awareness of eyes on him, a slight skewed perception of himself from another’s point of view that never showed him in as good a light as he preferred. Disorienting, disconcerting, and damn annoying. It pried him out of an almost content sleep, reminding him Aya was gone as he rolled over and met no resistance, and kick started one virulent bit of an aggressively bad mood. It was a whole new take to waking on the wrong side of the bed.

Schuldich’s bloodshot eyes shot open as his mind whipped out, cataloguing and then catching his unexpected company.

“I…don’t understand.” It was an uncomfortable admission, and Omi didn’t look at all pleased. The screen before them stayed an infuriating black. Omi checked the time for what had to have been the fifth time in as many minutes, and frowned.

Yohji opened his mouth, and Ken cut in. “If you complain about being bored one more time…”

“I was going to yawn.” Yohji punctuated the bland disclaimer with a jaw-popping expression of his current state of mind. “You sure we were getting a briefing tonight, kid?”

“I ran into Manx on my way back from class.” Omi scratched at his cheek. “She seemed a bit hurried, but was adamant we be back here for a briefing at nine.”

‘Here kitty, kitty, kitty…’

Aya did his best not to jerk out of his seat at the unexpected whisper that wormed through his mind. Malicious and manic all at once; Schuldich was awake.

‘Were you expecting company?’

“WHAT?” Aya sputtered, for the moment unconcerned with his team mates’ confusion.

‘They broke the door, I broke their brains. It seemed an acceptable trade. You guys missing any coworkers?’

“Well. I think that explains it.” Yohji drawled, standing with a deceptively casual stretch. “Shall we, kids?”

“Never thought to be on this end of things.” Ken grumbled, shoving his hands into his pockets.

“He can take care of himself.” Aya snarled, making his way to the stairs.

Omi’s fingers flew through a quick email, face twisted in an uncharacteristic bit of displeasure, and then he followed his team up and out. They had a mission tonight alright, but Omi was sure it wasn’t at all what Kritiker had planned.
