Chapter 33
Racing to the Rescue
Lucy Heartfilia had a smile on her face again as she and Edo-Natsu walked into Fairy Tail. Gray grinned to see that they had made up after such a terrible fight. Lisanna bounced up to Fireball Natsu and eagerly wanted to know how making up with Lucy went. By his flaming bright blush, anyone who was curious knew right away.
"How about a mission?" Lucy offered. "It can be one far away, since we have the car. A nice long drive would be nice," she said, blushing slightly.
Gajeel scoffed at her enamored face. "Is sex in a car really that good?"
Lucy spun at him. "I'm talking about a mission, not … not that."
"Gihi! Sure, whatever," he said with a wily smirk. "Banging in the backseat; I've never tried it, but I'm curious now."
Levy went solid red at his words. "Wh-wh-what? Who'd want to do something like that in a car? Besides, you get motion sickness, so you couldn't drive out somewhere to do … th-th-that."
"What are you all red about, Shrimp? I never said anything about who I'd want in the backseat with me?" Gajeel pointed out, patting Levy's head and making her puff out her cheeks in annoyance. "You're rather perverted to assume I meant you in particular, unless you secretly like the idea of sex in a car, where anyone can see you. I'm pretty jealous, ya know. Not sure I'd want anyone to see your cute tits and ass."
"Stupid Gajeel!" she yelled, giving him a slap on the arm. Levy huffed and turned away from him. "You're the perverted one for saying it in the first place."
Edo-Natsu's eyes narrowed slightly. "Get your own car. Only Lucy and I use my backseat."
Half the guild gasped.
Cana lowered her beer barrel. "Wait, then you two did? And in the backseat of a car? Hot!"
Edo-Natsu paled as his anxiety returned in full force. "I … I didn't say … w-well, I did say, but I didn't mean … although I guess I did mean it that way, but I didn't…"
"Natsu," Lucy growled in the same way she had spoken in frustration to the Dragon Slayer many times. "Shut up. Now."
"Yes, ma'am," he squeaked, leaping back from her glaring eyes.
Just then, Makarov burst out of his office. "We have an emergency," he bellowed out, and all the chatting went silent. "Wendy and Romeo are currently on a mission, but an entire army marched into their area. Wendy managed to get a message to us. Romeo is severely injured."
Macao leaped up with a horrified face at those words.
"They've taken shelter, but they can't get out. We need to evacuate them ASAP."
Lucy shouted out, "Fireball's four-wheeler could get us there the fastest, and Jet's running speed can help us to get to the kids."
"I'll come too," Levy shouted out. "If that four-wheeler runs out of fuel, I can help make more."
"Aye!" Happy shouted, flying forward. "I can airlift, and if Carla is in danger, I can rescue her." A dreamy look came into his face. "Maybe she'll thank me and accept my fish if I save her."
Makarov skeptically looked over to the Edolas boy. "We're supposed to keep Natsu Dragion safe."
"I don't care," Edo-Natsu said immediately. "Those two are still Wendy and Romeo. I can help. Please," he said, and suddenly his timid side returned. "I … I can do this much. Driving fast is my specialty. It's the one thing in this world that I really can do to help others. Please, s-sir … p-please let me do this much. Let me prove I can be useful to your guild."
Makarov still hesitated, but the safety of the children outweighed his misgivings. "Very well. You leave immediately. I'll get you a map. Under no circumstances are you to join the battle. This is between the royal army and a dark guild, and I don't want Fairy Tail getting into trouble. Get in, get out. Got it?"
"Yes, sir," they all answered.
Lucy left with Makarov to get a map while Levy began to gather her things, and Gajeel followed her, scolding her to be careful. Gray came up to Edo-Natsu as he pulled his racing gloves out of a pocket and tugged them on.
"Hey, Wheel-brain," said Gray. "Are you sure you're up to this?"
"It's driving," he said, his eyes looking serious as he tugged the leather gloves on and mentally prepared. "I'm good at driving. If I'm going to be part of your guild, it's probably what you'll need from me. I wasn't a fighter in Edolas, I was a driver, and I can be this Fairy Tail's driver as well." He looked straight at Gray, who was shocked to see the same fiery determination he often saw in Natsu Dragneel's eyes. "I need to prove myself, not just to everyone else here, but for myself, to know if I belong here or not."
Gray pouted at that sort of thinking—he felt Edo-Natsu was already a good addition to the guild—but he had to respect that this alternate universe Natsu had the same conviction to help the guild as the one who had been his rival since childhood.
"Do what you've gotta, but be safe out there."
Edo-Natsu lowered his goggles and smirked. "Hey, it's me."
"Yeah, and I know how stupidly reckless your counterpart is like." He patted Edo-Natsu on the shoulder. "Bring them back safely, Fireball."
A bright grin burst out like the summer sun. "I will, Gray." Then suddenly, Edo-Natsu leaped forward and wrapped his arms around Gray. "Oh, you really do care! You're just like my buddy back in Edolas. Awww, Gray!"
Gray tried to back away in a panic, but Edo-Natsu clung to him. "Hey, idiot. Stop that. What are you doing?"
Suddenly, Juvia had Edo-Natsu by the scruff of his neck and yanked him away. With darkness in her eyes, she growled, "No one hugs Gray-sama but Juvia."
Edo-Natsu shrieked in terror at the murderous look. He fled out of the guild and ran screaming all the way to where he parked his car at Lucy's house.
Gray sighed as he tried to fix his tussled hair. "Thanks, Juvia."
She flung herself into his chest and nearly crushed his rib whilst snuggling her cheek against him. "Juvia will wipe away all the Edolas germs with her body."
Gray struggled even harder to get away. "Not you too. Stop that. Stop!"
Within minutes, Lucy, Levy, Happy, and Jet were all in Edo-Natsu's car. With Lucy giving directions from her map, they rushed through the countryside. They all held on as the crazed driver showed why he was called Fireball Natsu. He skidded around mountain roads and pushed the car as fast as it would go through straight farmlands.
A train ride would have taken half a day, with stops at stations and transfers, plus they would need to walk or hitch a ride on a wagon to get to the location. With the car, they were there within an hour, and they got so close, they could hear the explosions of a battle. It sounded bad even from far away. Smoke billowed into the air, there were bright flashes of magic being unleashed, and battle cries swirled into a terrifying din of clashing weapons.
They crested a hill and looked over the battle. There were the pristine tunics of the royal guards and gray robes of the dark guild, each clashing in conflict. The battle looked almost even.
"Makarov said they were hiding in a crevasse between two rocks," Lucy said, scanning the terrain. "There's huge rocks everywhere."
"Wait," shouted Jet. "Look to the left, almost right in the center. Two huge boulders, side by side. There's a crevasse between them. That must be it."
"There's hundreds of people fighting between here and the boulders," Levy said worriedly. "How close can we get?"
Edo-Natsu clenched the steering wheel. "I plan to take us right to them."
"Through a battlefield—" Lucy began to say, but his foot stomped on the gas pedal, and the car leaped off the hill, going airborne for a moment before crashing down and speeding right toward the battle.
"This is insane," Jet screamed.
"Aye!" Happy yelled, holding onto Levy.
Edo-Natsu pushed the four-wheeler to its speed limit, completely focused on the mission, a seriousness in his eyes that they only saw with Natsu Dragneel in a fight. He dodged enemy attacks, bombs, missiles, magic blasts, all the while weaving between battling opponents, avoiding them with ease. One explosion was a little too close and lifted the car onto two wheels. Gritting his teeth, Edo-Natsu swerved, and the car crashed back down with a thud that jolted their teeth.
"The rocks are straight ahead," Jet yelled. "I see Wendy."
They all saw the little girl with a magic shield up to protect her. At her feet was Romeo. They could see blood on both of them, and Wendy looked like she could barely stand anymore.
"Hold on tight," said Edo-Natsu.
Lucy snapped, "You should have told us to hold on back when you leaped off that hill."
"You loved it," he chuckled. Then he caught sight of something, and his eyes widened. "Shit!"
Someone's blast of magic threw one of the massive boulders littering the battlefield, and it crashed right in front of them. Edo-Natsu slammed on the brakes, and they were all thrown forward, almost through the windshield. As the dust settled, they realized there were pockets of fighting on both sides of the fallen stone.
"Leave it to me now," Jet said. "Happy, let's go!"
"Aye!" he yelled, and his wings appeared.
Jet leaped out of the car, speeding around the boulder, avoiding the surrounding fights. Happy flew above, dodging a hail of flying spells and cannonballs. In just a minute, Jet was back with Romeo, who was pale and had blood covering his clothes.
"Oh my God! Romeo?" Lucy cried out, but the boy was unconscious.
"Make room for them both," Jet told Levy, and he rushed off to get Wendy.
Lucy and Levy worked together to lay him across the back seat, with Levy's lap as a pillow.
"Romeo, can you hear me?" Levy asked the boy, but his eyes were closed and his mouth hung open. Romeo's breathing was raspy and slow. "He's lost a lot of blood," Levy realized.
Jet returned carrying Wendy in his arms, and Happy was flying just behind him holding Carla. Wendy's dress was covered in blood from a shot to her shoulder, and Carla had a cut on her cheek that dripped red into her white fur. Wendy at least could walk, but she was barely hanging on. She sat in the back with both Carla and Happy on her lap, and Jet leaped onto the roof, hanging on tightly.
"Get us out of here, Natsu," he shouted.
"Natsu?" Wendy asked, dizzy and bleary-eyed. She saw the pink hair and goggles. "Dragion," she whispered in realization.
The car took off and made a U-turn, taking them back the way they came, swerving to miss clusters of fighting. Wendy instantly put her hand to her mouth, ready to vomit.
"Oh no, the motion sickness," Levy realized.
Wendy tried to fight it down. "Romeo still needs medical help," she said. "I … urp! … I healed the worst of it, but he's … ugh! … he's still bleeding."
"So are you," Levy said in worry. "Your shoulder!"
Romeo's eyes cracked open. "She took the shot … to save me."
"I told you to sleep," Wendy scolded.
"You shouldn't have…"
"You would have died if they shot you again." Wendy put her hand to her mouth as she felt acid burp up. "I'm not going to let you die, no matter what that means to me."
"No, Wendy…" He tried to sit up, but he screamed in pain.
Levy took the boy's hand. "It's okay. We've got you both now. Rest." She looked worriedly at Wendy. The little girl was bleeding almost as badly as Romeo was, plus now she was green with motion sickness. Still, she managed to focus on healing him first. What self-sacrificing dedication!
A bomb went off near them, sharply jolting the car. Lucy held on tightly, Levy protected Romeo's head, Wendy finally did throw up, Happy yanked Carla out of the way of the vomit and ended up sitting on Romeo's stomach, causing him to scream in pain, so he slipped Carla down to Levy's footwell for protection. They heard a loud thump, but Edo-Natsu continued.
"Jet!" Levy screamed.
Lucy looked behind them. "Was he thrown off?"
Jet had lost his grip on the car's roof, but he was running after them. "Keep going. I'll catch up."
"He may even be faster than this four-wheeler," Levy said, sounding proud of her fellow Team Shadowgear member.
"Are you sure he'll be okay?" asked Edo-Natsu. "I could slow down."
"No, Jet is fast. He'll catch up."
"I'm just worried that—" Edo-Natsu's eyes widened. "Oh no," he whispered.
The car spun around almost right on the spot and charged straight at Jet.
"What are you doing?" Levy screamed.
"Natsu!" Lucy yelled.
"Hold on!" he shouted, and suddenly he turned the car sharply to the side. A second later, a cannonball that had been heading toward Jet pounded into the driver's side door, sending the car skidding far to the side, right into two dark guild members, crushing them under the wheels.
"Edo-Natsu?" Jet yelled in horror.
"Get on," Levy yelled.
Lucy and Levy grabbed Jet and yanked him inside, where he laid over the laps of those in the backseat. Edo-Natsu then sped them out. The car ran slower, there was smoke starting to fill inside, but he managed to weave between soldiers and wizards, getting them up the hill and back onto the road. Then the car sputtered to a halt.
Edo-Natsu slumped against the wheel, panting hard in weariness. "Is … is everyone … okay?"
Levy stretched her neck around. "Some whiplash, but we're fine."
Wendy whimpered, "Jet, you're way too heavy to be on my lap."
"Ack! I'm sorry," he said, leaping out of the packed car. "Edo-Natsu … you…"
"You're safe, Jet. That's … good." He laughed in an awkward, exhausted sputter of air. "What would Edolas' Jet think, the strongest man in Fairy Tail getting saved by a weakling like me? How funny, right? How … funny." Then he faced them with a weak smile. "I'm glad … everyone … is safe."
Lucy gasped, and tears sprang instantly into her eyes. "No…"
Levy covered her mouth. "Dear heavens!"
In blocking the cannonball, Edo-Natsu took heavy damages. Half his face was crushed and bloodied. His right eye was swollen shut with blood covering the eyelid. His right arm hung limply at his side. Blood dripped down his waist from gashes they could not see through the red clothes, but they knew it must be bad due to the blood pooling on the seat. Yet still he had a shining grin.
"I'm glad … I could be of use." He suddenly passed out on top of the steering wheel.
"Natsu!" Lucy shrieked.
"Get him into the backseat," Levy ordered. "Jet, help me to lay him flat. Wendy!"
"Okay, Romeo is better."
"I can sit up," Romeo said weakly.
"Take the front seat," Levy ordered, assisting the boy to sit up.
Levy and Jet got out of the way and worked together to lay Edo-Natsu out across the backseat of the car. Lucy had her hand covering her mouth as she watched in horror as he bled across the seat where, just days ago, the two of them had made love. She swallowed hard as she watched Wendy begin some emergency healing to stop the heavy bleeding. Once Edo-Natsu's shirt was off, Lucy saw that his right side was utterly crushed, and her stomach heaved when she saw a rib bone poking through his pale, skinny chest.
Wendy's magic glowed, but she looked up in worry. "I can stop the bleeding, but he needs surgery, and he's lost a lot of blood already. We need to get him to a hospital."
Levy looked at the countryside. "Magnolia is the closest city big enough for a surgery ward, but it's an hour away. Will he be okay until then?"
Wendy looked down at the pink-haired man, and her heart hurt in anguish that he looked so much like Natsu Dragneel. "It's a risk, but if that's the closest, it'll have to do."
"Jet, can you drive?" asked Levy.
The tall man looked around. "There's no SE-Plug. How the heck does this machine work?"
Lucy yanked herself out of her terrified daze. "I … I can drive it. He showed me how."
Levy fretted over her friend. "Lu-chan, you shouldn't—"
"I can do this," she yelled. "I'm supposed to protect him, and instead I let him do something so reckless. I'm the one who suggested he come, so this is my responsibility."
"It's not your fault," Levy said reassuringly.
Still, Lucy's fists firmed up. "I can drive his car. For him, to save him, I'll do anything."
She slid over to the driver's side. The seat was slick with warm blood. The door had crushed inward, and she saw blood on the sharp edges that had stabbed into Edo-Natsu. For people he barely knew, for a guild he did not technically belong to, he was willing to risk his life. Lucy's determination grew. She could do this. She had to do this. To save him, to protect him, to help the man she loved. She griped the steering wheel with resolve and fortitude glowing in her eyes.
Levy struggled to fit everyone into the car. Jet sat up front with Romeo in his lap and the two Exceeds sitting on the center console. Levy and Wendy were in the backseat with Edo-Natsu stretched between them, his head on Wendy's lap so she could heal the crushed face, his feet on Levy's lap where she held him firmly.
Levy worriedly asked Wendy, "Are you feeling okay?"
"No," she said honestly. "I'll do what I can to heal him, but the quicker we get to a hospital, the better his chances are."
Levy looked at the driver's seat with worry. "Lu-chan…"
"Understood," she said with conviction. Lucy started up the car, and the engine roared to life. "I can do this." The car drove down the road, taking them away from the sounds of battle and back toward Magnolia.
