------------------------------------
When they got home still laughing Taki asked what had happened. "The Coach wanted to check on Ohtori's progress," Shishido said before Ohtori could. For some reason Shishido wanted to keep what had happened between just the two of them. "He said 'Well done.'" They all laughed as Taki's jaw hit the floor and then Taki congratulated Ohtori. Shishido did again too and was still really impressed with him.
After that, Ohtori came out every night and they laughed over trouble they each had gotten into as kids and traded more stories and jokes. For the couple of weeks they talked about pets and their families and sports and things they liked. Shishido was relieved at first. He realized how much he missed talking with him and spending time with him, and then a new worry started creeping into his thoughts. He worried what all of this meant. To Ohtori and to him. What did this mean? What could it mean?
A couple of weeks later, on a Friday night, Shishido found he was so looking forward to talking to him and spending time with him, that he wondered if this should stop. He didn't want to lead Ohtori on or possibly hurt him but the reality was Shishido wasn't free to even think about being with him. He was worried that Ohtori might just be dragged down for being his friend let alone anything else. That night Shishido taught Ohtori as he was supposed to, he went over the things Ohtori would have to know for the spring induction, he finished his schoolwork in the main room, and then said to Taki and Ohtori that he was tired and turning in early. He tried to ignore the wince of shock and upset that showed on Ohtori's face because Shishido knew this was for the best.
Shishido rolled around for hours. He tried to read which didn't work. He tried to look online and then watch television quietly on the small screen in his room but that wasn't any good either. He could not fall asleep no matter how hard he tried. He kept thinking about things Ohtori had said or things he wanted to tell him. He got up finally to use the washroom and then wash his face. On he way back, passing the couch, he was surprised to find Ohtori lying there where Shishido usually did. Ohtori looked odd and Shishido went to see if he was all right. Shishido tried to gently wake him when he noticed from the smell, Ohtori had been drinking. Shishido smelled a strong peppermint smell on Ohtori and knew it as Taki's favorite shot. Taki must have gotten Ohtori drunk, and then discovered that Ohtori was too big for Taki to carry to bed. Shishido though could manage to get him up and into his bed. "Hey, Ohtori?" Shishido gently nudged him awake.
Ohtori smiled and his eyes opened only half way. "Shishido-san..." he whispered and Ohtori ran the fingers of his hand softly through Shishido's long loose hair. It was a surprisingly familiar and intimate gesture from someone who had never touched him before. Shishido sort of half froze because of how intimate it was and because he knew shy Ohtori must be very drunk to do anything like that. He was surprised Ohtori being drunk like this didn't accidentally didn't call Shishido by Ohtori's dead best friend's name. Shishido did look very much like the guy and his dead friend was after all the one Ohtori really wanted to see. Ohtori laughed and whispered something.
Shishido moved closer to him to hear him. "What did you say? I didn't hear you."
Ohtori whispered softly, so softly Shishido had to move even closer, "I said I missed you tonight Shishido-san. I missed talking with you." Ohtori turned more to him and whispered even softer, "Did you miss talking with me, Shishido-san?"
Before Shishido could answer Ohtori leaned his lips up and kissed him. Ohtori's hand which had run through his hair now gently pulled Shishido's head down to him. Ohtori kissed him light on his lips and then when Shishido didn't move because of shock, Ohtori gently and expertly slipped a peppermint flavored soft wet tongue in between Shishido's lips, parting them. His tongue explored Shishido's mouth a little further sliding their tongues together in a sweet soft kiss while his lips moved strangely strong and oddly familiar as if he already knew Shishido intimately. It was very curious and very seductive even coming from such a shy and seemingly innocent guy. Ohtori seemed so virginal and naive but right then he was proving to be very enticing and very experienced. It was almost like they had kissed a thousand times before when they never had. One thing for sure Shishido realized, Ohtori really knew how to kiss. Ohtori really knew how to kiss very well.
Ohtori was kissing him.
It hit him with a cold shock.
Shishido found then to his complete surprise he was already kissing Ohtori back. His hands were on Ohtori's strong shoulders, his lips were moving against Ohtori's warm soft peppermint scented mouth and their tongues were touching in a slow sexy slide that made everything in Shishido's body stand at attention wanting more and causing his brain to shut off for a moment. An instant before Shishido leapt away, right after his brain finally kicked in again and he thought to himself they should not be doing this, he should not be doing this, Ohtori pulled back. He gave Shishido one last soft sweet kiss with his lips only. Ohtori looked at him as if Shishido was the most incredible and beloved thing Ohtori had ever seen. Ohtori smiled at him and as drunk as he must have been, his deep brown eyes looked for an instant remarkably clear. "Good night Shishido-san. Sleep well," he said and then lay back down. He then comically and drunkenly struggled to pull the twisted blanket that half covered him up to his shoulder and while trying to keep his feet covered.
Shishido was in shock and let go of Ohtori. Without thinking about it he righted his blanket that had been turned sideways around and covered him. "Good night," Shishido said and decided not to touch or move Ohtori at all. He walked away to seek refuge in his room. He went inside and closed his door. Then he leaned against it. His heart was pounding, his blood was rushing in a thrilling wave of sudden desire, and he felt all shaky with lust. His hand went to his mouth, touching his lips, and he still tasted peppermint on his tongue.
The taste lingered like the memory of that kiss.
Shishido's head was spinning.
All from one kiss.
One drunken peppermint stolen delicious kiss. Shishido realized in surprise that no one, not even Atobe at his worst, his most wanton, his most wicked, no one ever had made Shishido feel like this. He had seriously underestimated Ohtori. Shishido shook his head to clear it and willed his pulse to calm down and his erection to stop. This was stupid. Ohtori was deceptively dangerous. He was too naive and trusting for his own good and Shishido realized with a start that in his shock he had forgotten to tell Ohtori to stop or to even get angry at him. He let Ohtori steal a kiss and he had never even let Atobe once in all the time they had been together. This was bad.
Really bad because Shishido really didn't want to stop back then. Hell, he still was fighting to not go back out there and either kiss him again or yell at him. He knew if he went out there to yell at him he really would only end up kissing him more. Then he had a sudden panicky thought that Ohtori would clearly remember all this, followed with a sudden panicky second thought that maybe Ohtori would remember nothing.
Shishido wasn't sure which one was worse. Shishido paced his room for a moment to calm down and argued with himself in his head as he did. He was trying to overcome his feelings of want by replacing them with familiar feelings of anger. Ohtori had no business kissing him, none. Certainly he should not have kissed him like...like...that! He had been a good senpai and had gone through pains to keep himself dressed and away from Ohtori so he would get over his obsession with substituting Shishido for his dead lover. This was not fair! Shishido couldn't help that he looked like that guy but anyone could clearly see they were two completely different people! Shishido was not that guy and would never be! Ohtori was not being fair to Shishido. Not at all. And it hurt.
Shishido decided he was going to go back out there and give the kid a piece of his mind. He was not going to kiss him, no. Certainly not. He was just going to yell at him. No way could he let the kid do this again to him. This was not fair to him or anyone else and this had to stop. The kid was dangerous and had taken advantage of Shishido being nice! The one time he is nice to someone, he gets this? It wasn't fair! Shishido turned and noticed his door was ajar. He was sure he had closed it before and remembered leaning against it. The kid must have opened it and watched him when he was upset. He was angry before but he was furious now. The kid was making a fool of him and he wouldn't let him get away with this. He looked out his door and went to step out when he saw that Taki was now bent down over the couch and clearly kissing Ohtori.
What the hell!?
Taki's hand was snaking down the blanket Shishido had covered Ohtori with as if he was going to do things to Ohtori. Shishido's fury turned to jealous rage. He guessed Ohtori when he was drunk acted friendly like this with anyone who was near. Shishido was angry at himself for being such an idiot as to think any of it meant anything to Ohtori or to himself. Stupid!
Then as he looked, he noticed that Ohtori did not seem to be awake at all. Shishido couldn't see his face but the way Taki was bent over, Ohtori's head was laying down. His hands were not holding Taki close to him and he also was not talking like he had with Shishido. Ohtori was probably passed out asleep. Taki had no right to touch Ohtori when he was so obviously drunk. Shishido decided to go out there and stop him. Taki was taking advantage of him while he slept and Taki was the idiot who got the kid drunk in the first place!
Just as he thought this, Taki pulled back from his kiss and backed away as if he heard what Shishido was thinking. Shishido stood back from his open door in his dark room, not wanting to be seen or make any noise so Taki would not know he saw. He heard Taki pause right outside his door for a moment and Shishido wondered if Taki had opened his door or seen Ohtori kiss him. He had no idea and was furious with not knowing. He expected Taki to knock on his door and confront him, and for a moment steeled himself for a jealous argument over a guy passed out no less.
Instead, Shishido heard Taki and Ohtori's door close. Shishido paused wondering what else he would hear or see. After a few minutes he realized it was over. Whatever that was, it was done now. He watched Ohtori sleeping on the couch for a few moments. Ohtori did not stir and Shishido could see from the dim light that Ohtori's breathing was deep and regular. He was sleeping.
Shishido felt afraid because what he almost answered to Ohtori before Ohtori kissed him was yes. Yes, he missed talking to him too. This was bad. Even worse was his irrational urge to go out there and lightly kiss him again so that he was the last one Ohtori had kissed. Shishido wouldn't. It would make him no better than Taki, but a part of him wanted to. He even thought of sleeping or more likely sitting in the chair to watch over the kid or putting the kid in his bed and him laying on the couch since there was no way he could sleep now. Shishido kept his door slightly open and lay down. If he heard Taki's door open he intended to stop him this time.
Not even two months had passed since he first saw the kid and he felt like his world was rocked upside-down. He still didn't know if the kid was just a friendly drunk or if he meant it when he said he missed talking to him. It hurt because Shishido really had missed him. And the worst part of it was, the kid he was sure really didn't like him, he liked how he looked because Shishido was a convenient substitute who looked like someone the kid had loved. A guy that the kid didn't even know the group of them knew had been his lover and knew he was dead. Even if Shishido had feelings for him, the kid would never be able to get his first love out of his head. Ever. He would never see Shishido when he looked at him but would always think of his friend. There was no way to compete with a dead guy and the fact that Shishido even considered it for an instant showed how impossible this situation was.
And the moment Atobe knew Shishido was even remotely interested in someone else, he would cut Shishido off in a heartbeat leaving him alone to fend for himself without looking back. Shishido couldn't protect himself let alone the kid who had no idea what he was getting himself into. Shishido had to stop thinking about this. There were no other solutions to the problem. This really just...well it was unfair and the entire situation just sucked but that was how it was. The kid should be with Taki...he thought about Taki kissing him while he was out and thought then that the kid should be with someone else, but regardless Shishido should get the hell away from him so he wasn't tempted anymore. So neither one of them ever was again. He would have to talk to the kid in the morning and fix this mess.
But he didn't get the chance. Saturday morning when he got out of the shower there was no coffee and no one on the couch. Maybe the kid was angry. He wasn't sure. Shishido dressed and walked to the bus with Taki while he wondered where Ohtori was. Their school had a match today. Taki complained about being hung over and Shishido had to buy coffee from a vending machine and choke it down. Shishido knew Taki was hinting around to see if Shishido saw anything but not telling the whole truth was Hyoutei familiar to both of them so it passed as normal. Shishido didn't see the kid anywhere and asked if he was hung over too. Taki said the kid didn't seem to be when his father picked him up. The kid apparently was missing the match and spending the night at home. He never said anything to Shishido and Shishido was not sure what it meant if anything. He acted like he knew already so Taki wouldn't realize Shishido didn't know. The rest of the day passed poorly. It was a day filled with missing Ohtori, wanting to talk to him, wondering what was going on, being worried about talking to him, and just worrying in general.
Shishido laid in his bed all Saturday night and not slept again when he got up and went to shower. He made a decision and decided to go practice. Atobe was one of the only true regulars who was a Junior. The other Juniors in Atobe's circle were sub-regulars who practiced with the true regulars and were occasionally allowed to compete for experience. The understanding was if you lost you were sent back down to the masses with no chance to regain favor. All in all about thirty guys Atobe had hand selected were in his little clique of sub-regulars and wannabes though the inner circle Atobe carefully cultivated was only about ten people all fighting constantly for position, power, and his favor. All being groomed for next year. Since Shishido and Atobe had parted he had not gone to practice on any Sunday. It was not required but Atobe adored his little Sunday rituals. It had been months Shishido realized since he had been to one.
Shishido just being there would upset the balance and change everything. Shishido thought all this, and looked without thinking for the coffee to be poured in his favorite mug. It wasn't there. Of course it wasn't. He cursed himself in his head as he went to dress. Just that little thing every morning was starting to mean something to him and he could not allow this. He needed a favor from Atobe and this was the best way to get Atobe to agree. He would show up and wait for Atobe to approach him. Shishido's hands shook as he dressed because he knew what Atobe might ask him to do as payment, and he realized he would agree to the terms, even those terms, if only to help the kid. Ohtori had gotten under Shishido's skin that much that he would agree to do even that for the kid.
Everyone turned and watched Shishido approach. Shishido fell back into the habit of warming up alone while being watched and discussed behind his back and spoke to no one. He never showed any hint of nervousness and never spoke to Atobe. He waited knowing Atobe would come when Atobe was ready.
Finally and to his shock Atobe approached Shishido in the shower. Because of Atobe's power the locker room and shower room suddenly were cleared and yet, Shishido never saw or heard anything until the shower curtain was pulled back and a gorgeous naked Atobe walked in and joined him unasked. Only then did Shishido notice that there was no noise of people talking, laughing, and yelling behind him because everyone was suddenly gone replaced by a deafening silence. Atobe looked Shishido up and down and looked both a little hungry and annoyed. "You seem well Shishido. Have you been sleeping?" He saw Atobe tried to say it in his usual superior casual way but his eyes were too angry for him to get away with smug. Which of course only infuriated Atobe more.
Shishido was already wary but knew he had to step even more carefully than normal. Atobe, he realized, was so jealous he was nearly snarling. The sleeping dig was because he knew Shishido had trouble sleeping. Since he was a child he always had trouble falling asleep and then even more trouble staying asleep. Unless he physically exhausted himself he simply caught a few hours nap most nights and over the years had learned to function well enough with little or no sleep. Instead of sleeping he would lay in bed tossing for hours or zone out watching television until he could finally nap for a little while. Occasionally he would be so exhausted he would sleep for an hour or two in the afternoon or in the morning between tennis and his first classes or even skip classes once in a while. The school knew he had wicked insomnia and was too drug sensitive to really take anything. Shishido knew that because of Atobe, he had never gotten into trouble on the rare times he skipped a class or three because he was too exhausted.
Atobe was upset. He must have been monitoring Shishido's classes. Shishido hadn't missed any classes so Atobe's jealous heart assumed he had been sleeping. Probably with the kid. Probably because the kid had exhausted him. Shishido had that thought and an image of Ohtori exhausting him suddenly flashed through his mind and reverberated through his body like a hot wave. He gasped but only slightly at the effect the vision had on him. Then he had to keep himself from sighing or saying something sarcastic back to Atobe because it would make things only worse. Shishido could not afford to be distracted and tried to put his thoughts of Ohtori out of his head. Instead he said, "No. I haven't been able to sleep at all." Which was the truth.
"Because he's away at the memorial service. Do you miss him that much?" Atobe said it sarcastically.
"Him? Who?" Shishido guessed Atobe meant Ohtori. He had said nothing about leaving or a memorial service or anything and Shishido wondered if anyone else knew. Maybe Taki had known. Atobe would of course as Ohtori must have had to ask him permission to miss yesterday. Ohtori never referred to his dead lover as anything but his best friend and always talked about him in the present tense, as if the guy was still around. Atobe saw Shishido's clear confusion and smirked as if he won something.
Shishido had prepared a little statement kind of a speech. He had intended tell Atobe he missed him but Shishido only realized right then when he went to say it to Atobe that it was a lie. Somehow, he didn't miss Atobe anymore. He missed things about him and things about their time together, but Shishido realized only now that he didn't feel that way for Atobe anymore. He just didn't even realize it until right then. Suddenly he was very afraid that Atobe would clearly see how much his feelings had changed and the surprise of this brand new information would register on his face. To cover his expression and reaction, Shishido stepped further under the spray and closed his eyes. Atobe loved to wash his hair for him and Shishido hoped that he would have missed it enough to reach to do it. Shishido was glad that he was not disappointed.
"Turn." Atobe ordered him and Shishido relaxed his back against Atobe's chest so familiar and yet, so foreign for the first time. So wrong. But Shishido had to do this. Atobe soaped up his scalp, ran his fingers lovingly through Shishido's long hair, and made a little growl. Shishido wondered at how much he once had missed Atobe's growls and now he felt nothing when he heard them. Before they were sexy and a turn on and now they just sounded...silly. Atobe was enjoying himself and growling more, "You've changed shampoos. Mmm...smells like...vanilla. Surprisingly nice for store bought. Did you run out of the ones I gave you or did the smell remind you of me too much?"
"Both." Shishido said with a shrug because enough of it was true. Before Atobe he used a shampoo and conditioner that were scented like his favorite cologne but Atobe said he hated them. Instead he gave Shishido some he said he preferred. They had always made Shishido's hair so silky he hadn't minded even though he rolled his eyes in protest. In the beginning when Shishido had walked away, they had smelled too much like Atobe, to a point that was painful, but then after he threw them all away in a fit of independence, he missed them terribly. Missed him terribly.
Shishido had even tried to replace them but they were way out of his price range, ridiculously too expensive. He was actually shocked at just how expensive when he finally located a small bottle. He couldn't even afford that. Atobe always gave him tons of it in huge bottles because cost to Atobe was no object. Pleasure however, was. Shishido tried a lot of kinds since then but was on this strange vanilla kick after a dream he had. He was even craving vanilla flavored drinks, sweets, and coffee lately. He realized that was the flavor in the coffee every morning he so enjoyed, the one he couldn't quite place. Vanilla. He would miss the vanilla smell and the vanilla coffee once Atobe made him change back to what Atobe preferred. The pet had little choice, however the pet was strong enough to choose this because the pet didn't want someone else, a certain kid, to get hurt no matter what it cost the pet.
Atobe had turned to face him and was busy putting one of his famous "love marks" on Shishido's chest by his heart. Atobe loved that place, loved to mark there and claim Shishido as his own in his own way. Shishido would allow this, would allow all this, whatever it took to get back in his good graces, but he also right now wanted more. He needed more. He needed Atobe to kiss him.
Atobe kissed up his neck, his ear, and his cheek. He ran his hands along Shishido's wet soapy body and Shishido felt his body respond but not as it used to. It was responding to someone touching and kissing him but he was not craving this person's touch and kiss. Shishido realized with a jolt, he wanted someone else and he knew exactly who it was. He ran his hands along Atobe's body so familiar and so foreign all at once and Shishido closed his eyes. Atobe softly purred in pleasure at Shishido touching him for a change and gave another little growl. Shishido kept his eyes closed and tried to remember what Ohtori's body looked like. He had seen him without his shirt on enough times and he wondered as Atobe touched him what Ohtori's skin felt like and how it tasted. How and where Ohtori liked to be touched. What he smelled like when you were this close to him. What kinds of noises the kid made and if he liked to kiss like that before, during, and after making love. That surprising confident look he had after kissing Shishido, a look that said he knew and saw the effect he was having on him and enjoyed it. Remembering just that had Shishido throbbing with lust and willing to let whatever was going to happen with Atobe happen, just to keep Ohtori safe. Shishido would be strong. He wouldn't hurt someone again or let them fall.
Shishido hoped that his being this turned on and this, well, this agreeable for a change, Atobe would chalk up to his missing him because there was no way thinking the thoughts he was that Shishido could hold back. Atobe kissed his closed eyes and gave another purr as Shishido touched him, wanting to be touched and reassured by a familiar hand, needing to forget the kid's stolen kiss and replace it with one from someone else, anyone else. Atobe kissed his face and Shishido smelled a hint of mint toothpaste or was it that breath spray Atobe frequently used. Shishido couldn't remember and no longer cared. It was mint and a warm willing mouth and that was close enough. Shishido went to kiss him, needed to, and their lips almost touched before Atobe grabbed Shishido by his hair and pulled him away. "What the hell are you doing?" Atobe asked and looked upset.
Shishido knew Atobe wasn't stupid, but he like Shishido was completely turned on too. "Damn, what do you think? I want you, Keigo."
Atobe looked at him for a moment. He saw. He knew. Surprisingly, he held Shishido close and sagged a little against him for just a second. Then he stood up more and held him tighter, "Just tell me what you want, Ryoh." He sounded defeated. Shishido pushed him away so he could see his face. Atobe looked...upset. Almost like he would cry. And he looked distant.
Shishido's heart went out to him. He decided that even though he had to do this for someone else, he would not hurt Atobe. Not this time. He touched his face, "Keigo, what I really want is back with you."
