Morning came quick to Littleroot. And in one particular bedroom, the sun was shining upon the bodies of a young teenage girl and an Umbreon. Yawning, Merry stretched her arms out, the sunlight annoying her awake. Her movements caused Jinx to stir as well, and he quickly jumped off the bed, stretching. Merry looked at the heavy looking camping bag sitting by her door, and the events of last night came flooding back into her mind.
Merry quickly got dressed in denim shorts and a somewhat loose-fitting T-shirt before going to get socks on. Jinx wandered over and brushed against her side, content with being with her this morning. Merry looked down and smiled, pausing to scratch him behind the ears. “Morning Jinx,” she said quietly, watching the Umbreon’s rings glow gently brighter. “Well, I guess this is going to be the day,” she told him, ending the scratching and resuming putting her socks on. “I’m going to be off doing my own thing, and you’ll….” Merry trailed off, her face falling in sadness.
[Meredith, do not worry, I will be quite fine here,] Jinx whined to her, resting his head on her side. It pained him, knowing that his mate would be leaving. And knowing just how fragile she actually was, made it just that much more difficult to let her go. Merry sighed, finishing up with her socks before standing up.
“Well, let’s go downstairs,” she said, heading to the door. “Get something to eat.” Jinx nodded in agreement, and together, they both made their way downstairs to the kitchen. Getting there, Merry filled up Jinx’s food dish, and looked in the fridge for anything that she could eat. Oddly enough, she was craving lots of fruit. Looking at the drawer in question, Merry grabbed an entire melon and brought it to the table.
Jinx stopped eating his food to look at the giant fruit that Merry now had on the table. […Meredith? Is something the matter?] Merry shrugged as she pulled out a jug of milk. She set the milk down on the table as well, and turned to grab a few other things.
Finally, she sat down at the table, fork in one hand, and arguably the biggest knife that Jinx had ever seen in her other hand. Sensing the look Jinx was giving her, Merry looked at him and then at the knife. “Jinx, a butter knife won’t cut it for the rind,” she told him, gesturing to the melon. Jinx watched as she put the knife against the rind, and placed her palm on the flat of the blade, hoping to get some leverage.
Images of blood, severed fingers, and worse flashed through Jinx’s mind. In a black furred flash, Jinx leapt to the table and slashed at the melon, dark energy briefly surrounding his claws. Merry jumped back in surprise. “Jinx, what are you… doing…?” she asked, looking at the Umbreon as he smirked at her, the melon on the table sliding into pieces. “Oh. Umm, thanks Jinx?”
“Bre!” he replied cheerfully, hopping down off the table to curl up at her feet. Merry chuckled at him as she set the carving knife down. Pouring herself a glass of milk, she picked up the butter knife and began eating breakfast.
“Morning Meredith,” Amanda said to her daughter as she entered the kitchen, only to stop at the sight of her daughter eating the watermelon she was planning on cutting up later. “You okay honey?” Merry nodded.
“Yeah Mom, I’m fine, just a little hungry, that’s all,” she replied. “Well, I had a little help from Jinx.” Amanda blinked her eyes, and then looked at her Umbreon.
“Jinx, you helped her with that?” she asked. Jinx peeked out from under the table to look at his owner, nodding. “Bre bre,” he yipped. Amanda ran her hand through her hair. “Well, good job,” she said to him.
Merry set the silverware down. “Mom, what is it?” she asked, looking at her mother. Amanda sighed.
“Meredith, I know that you’re going out today, for the first time,” she began, sitting down at the table opposite her daughter. Merry watched her intently. “And,” Amanda continued, “Well, I just realized, that well, I didn’t think of anything to get you for your birthday, what with the move and all….”
“Mom, I’m okay, really!” Merry told her hurriedly, plastering a smile on her face. “I’m okay with not getting a whole lot of presents anymore!” Amanda sniffled, tears in her eyes as she listened to her daughter.
“I know, but,” Amanda sobbed out, lowering her head into her hands, “I feel so horrible, not being able to give you anything!” Merry shifted uncomfortably as her mother broke down in front of her. “So, I was thinking, and, well, I found just the thing to give you for your birthday,” she added, burrowing a hand into her pocket.
Merry gulped in trepidation as she watched her mother pull the gift out of her pocket. “Mom, look, I can’t get a car, I don’t have a license,” she began saying, just before she noticed just what her mother was pulling out. “Mom? What’s in that Pokeball?” Merry asked her mother, confused. Amanda wiped away another tear.
“It’s Jinx’s actually,” she said, startling both teen and Pokémon. “I know that you and Jinx are close, especially after what happened, so, I think that it would be best if you left with him by your side, to keep you safe.” Merry looked at her mother, stunned, her jaw all but falling to the table. “He’ll help you with training your Pokémon in the future.”
Merry looked down at Jinx and back at her mother in rapid motion. “But Mom, Jinx, he’s-“ she stuttered, gesturing to the Umbreon. “He’s your Pokémon! He’s the Pokeathelon Speed Champion! He’s not a fighter! No offense Jinx,” Merry added, looking down at her lover.
“Umbre, eon,” Jinx replied to her as he too stared at his owner in shock. If what Lady Amanda was doing actually was happening, then that meant….
“Merry, Treeko may be strong for his size, but there are bigger and meaner Pokémon out there,” Amanda told her daughter sternly. “And while Jinx was an athlete, he was a fighter first. Believe me young lady, he will fight for you in ways you didn’t know.” Amanda looked down at him and smiled. “Won’t you Jinx?”
Jinx nodded vigorously as Merry began tearing up. “M-Mom, I… I don’t know what to say,” she sputtered, shaking. Amanda simply reached over and gripped her daughter’s hand.
“Then don’t say a thing,” she told Merry. And the three of them remained silent for a moment.
“Happy sweet sixteen Meredith.”

“So, are you ready Miss Meredith?”
Merry, now fully dressed and ready to go, pack right next to her, sat in front of Professor Birch’s desk. “Yes sir, I am,” she replied, nodding. Birch smiled and slid a clip board and pen over to her.
“Well, just to make things official, I need you to sign right there, stating that I have indeed given you permission to use Pokémon for protection during research projects, and for Pokémon based events,” Birch told her. “It also releases me from legal trouble if you get into trouble out there, and that the Pokedex I’m about to give you is yours, but ONLY with my and the League’s express permission,” he added, his tone suddenly serious, surprising Merry. “If you sign this, you are solely responsible for your actions, both out there in the wild and in the eyes of Hoenn law. Do you understand this?”
Merry gulped as she picked up the pen, her hand shaking only slightly. “I do sir,” she stated with certainty. Without another word, she clicked the pen and signed the paper in front of her, sliding it over to Birch.
Birch beamed at her. “Fantastic!” he told, taking the clip board from his desk. “Shouldn’t take more than a few minutes to clear this with the League, and you can get your license and Pokedex!” Merry smiled shyly, shrinking into herself.
“Well, it has been a long time coming I guess,” she chuckled, scratching the back of her head. Birch chuckled with her.
“Well, I’ll be back shortly,” he told her. “And when I do, we just need to get your photo taken, and you can go on your merry way!” he added, laughing at his joke.
Merry smiled and laughed with him… up until he left his office. The smile quickly turned into a look of pure disgust. “’Merry way,’” she spat out darkly. “Like I haven’t heard that one before.” Sighing, she crossed her arms leaned back in her chair, and began playing the waiting game.
As it turned out, Merry didn’t have to wait long. Not even two minutes later, Birch came back in, face beaming. “Okay, the paperwork is all finished, umm, if you can grab your bag, we can go get your photo taken, and you can be on your way!”
Merry huffed as she picked up her bag and followed the professor into another room, this one containing a white sheet attached to a wall. “Okay, I’ll put my best smile on Mr. Birch,” Merry said as she stood in front of the wall, looking at the camera across from her. She stood there smiling as Birch took a photo of her face. Taking her bag, she followed him back into his office where Birch pulled out the camera’s memory card and slid it into his computer.
“Umm, how long has Brendon had his license?” Merry asked Birch as he worked on the computer. The professor looked at her, pausing for a moment.
“Brendon? He’s had his for… a year and a half now, I think,” he responded. “He got Torrent for his first Pokémon, and they’ve been working together since then.” Merry smiled and nodded as she looked at her pack, where both Jinx and Treeko’s Pokeballs were currently stored. A few seconds later, Birch hit a key on his keyboard and rolled himself over to a printer system, where Merry could see her new card.
Tepidly, she got up and headed to the printer, where Birch was quickly laminating the card. “So, this is my license then?” she asked him, eyeing it warily. Birch smiled as he handed the brand new card over to her.
“Yes it is Meredith,” he told her. “Are you ready?” Merry nodded as she took the card. It didn’t weigh much, but still, it held a certain… weight to it. Taking a moment to accept it, Merry quickly slipped the card into her back pocket. Birch looked at her and nodded. “Well, you are now a trainer. I think Brendon is on 101, doing a population study. Maybe you can go and talk with him about the basics?”
Merry smiled and nodded. “I think I will,” she told him. “It’s, umm, been a while since I took the practice courses after all.”
Birch waved to the door. “Well then, Miss Walker… your adventure awaits.”

Merry was now back on Route 101, and looking for Brendon.
Again. Strange how life worked. As it was, she was being escorted by Jinx, who was happily walking by her side, with Treeko back on her shoulder. “So, after we meet Brendon, and maybe catch some new friends, how do you guys feel about training?” she asked, looking at the PokeNav-EX in her hand. According to her father, back in his day, PokeNav systems were much more bulky, looked like a yellow egg, and didn’t have the option of having downloadable apps for new trainers. In fact, if what her father said was true, it was more of a digital map than anything else.
“Bre, bre!” “Tree!” came the responses from the two Pokémon, giving Merry a good chuckle.
“Okay guys, let’s see what’s in the- look over there!” she hissed, dropping to the ground, almost sending Treeko flying off. And it was now that Merry could see firsthand what her mother meant about Jinx. The small canid was low to the ground, his eyes focused on the strange white tufted thing sticking out of the grass on the side of the road, not making a sound. Merry quickly pulled out a Pokeball and, cocking her arm, threw it as hard as she could at it.
Her three years of fast pitch softball, at first done for therapy, paid off as the device flew straight at it, hitting it hard.
“GYAAH!! WHAT THE FUCKING HELL?!?”
Merry reddened as Jinx put a paw over his face as Brendon stood up, rubbing his head in pain as he looked around before seeing the Pokeball. “Dammit, not again! Third time this month!” he muttered loudly, just as he saw Merry. “Oh hey Merry, did you see anyone throw a Pokeball at me?” he asked. Merry’s response was to groan as comprehension hit Brendon like the recently thrown Pokémon containment device.
“I’m so sorry!” Merry pleaded, throwing her hand out in apology. “I thought your hat was a Pokémon!” Brendon simply groaned in reply as he walked over to her.
“…yeah, I should probably get a new hat,” he commented after a moment. “Do you… need help, with actually throwing the Pokeball?” Merry rolled her eyes as Jinx chuckled.
“No, I can throw just fine!” she snapped, glaring at the Umbreon. “I just had a slight misunderstanding!” Brendon looked at her flatly.
“Okay, sure,” he responded just as flatly as he looked at his PokeNav. “Okay, well, right now, the local Route 101 population consists of Zigzagoon, Poochyena, and Wurmple, all of which are at low enough levels for even you of all people to catch. That is, if you don’t brain them first.”
Merry shifted her glare over to Brendon, and lightly punched him in the shoulder, making the other teen wince. “I don’t brain people either!” she added hotly as she picked up the Pokeball she threw at Brendon. “So, O wise one, how does one go about trying to catch a Pokémon in Hoenn?”
Brendon smirked as he looked at Merry trying to be confident. “Well, just like Johto, you actually need to find a wild Pokémon to catch,” he told her. “After that, well, I think you know what to do. Weaken, throw, repeat as necessary.” Merry gripped the Pokeball tightly.
“Okay, I understand that part, but about the whole finding wild Pokémon thing,” she began, just as a nearby bush began rustling. Everyone went quiet. Looking over at Brendon, Merry saw him mouth the words ‘Move quietly’ to her, and nodded. Slowly, she and Jinx (with Treeko still sticking to her shoulder, his claws sticking to her shirt like Velcro) advanced to the bush. “Okay Jinx, flush it out,” she whispered.
In a dark flash, Jinx dived into the bush, and moments later, he and an alarmed Poochyena came tumbling out, biting and clawing at each other. Without any kind of order, Jinx jumped back, disengaging from the fight. Merry looked at the healthy Poochyena and pointed at it. “Treeko, pound, but not too hard!” she ordered.
“Tree!” came Treeko’s reply as he leapt from Merry’s shoulder, making her stumble back slightly as he landed on the ground and rolled, absorbing the impact. A second later, the lizard came out of his roll and closed the distance between him and the Poochyena, slamming his rather hefty tail into the canine’s face.
The Poochyena yelped, and then bit down onto Treeko’s tail, sparks of electricity flying from the points of contact. “Treeko!” Merry cried out anguished that her Pokémon, HER first Pokémon, had just been injured, and judging by the amount of blood, perhaps badly. “Pound him again, now!”
“TREE!” Treeko growled as he raised a clawed hand-paw, the Poochyena’s eyes widening in dread. “KO!” The Poochyena let go, rubbing its muzzle whining as Treeko edged back towards Merry.
“Okay, here goes,” she muttered as she eyed the distance between her and the Poochyena. A moment later, she threw the Pokeball straight and true at the Pokémon. The Poochyena barely had time to yelp in shock when the ball hit it and sucked it in, converting the canine into conscious, crimson energy. The Pokeball snapped shut, and thudded to the ground, shaking.
The tension was thick as Merry watched the Pokeball rock on the ground, the Poochyena inside trying to get out. Eventually, it stopped moving and clicked, signifying a successful capture. But that currently was not on Merry’s mind as she scooped Treeko into her arms, ooking at his wound in worry. “Treeko, I’m so sorry,” she said, trying not to panic. “I didn’t know, I didn’t know!” She pulled out a potion from her pack, and quickly sprayed the weak nano-suture spray on his tail; thankfully, the sutures were sealing up the wounds, and Treeko’s shaking lessened as the painkillers inside the spray took effect.
Brendon crouched next to her, her Pokeball in his hand. “Umm, Merry?” he said hesitantly. Merry looked over at him, tears almost leaking from her eyes. “Uhh, I hate to be insensitive or anything, but come on! Treeko is a battler! He can take hits like this and keep going! Besides, worst case scenario, he would have just let his tail go.”
Merry paled in fury as she snatched the front of Brendon’s shirt and dragged him close. “What?!”
Brendon was desperate to get away from the angry girl who had his shirt in a death grip. “Treeko and their evolutions, like many lizards and lizard type Pokémon, have the ability to detach part of their tails to escape from predators!” he explained hurriedly. “They grow back, I swear!”
Merry held onto his shirt for what seemed to be an eternity before Treeko nudged his head underneath Merry’s chin. “Ko….” He chirred weakly, looking up at her with half lidded eyes. Merry’s fury broke under his pleading gaze, and she let Brendon go.
“I’m sorry,” she muttered to Brendon, Jinx coming to her side and standing by her. “It’s just that,… I… I’ve never….”
Brendon reached over and took her hand. “Hey, I freaked out too when Torrent first got really hurt,” he admitted. “But she pulled through, especially after I reached the Pokémon Center. Now she’s practically a force of nature to the Pokémon around here.” Merry tried to smile.
“Thanks for the pep talk,” she commented, picking Treeko up as she stood up. “Hey, that Poochyena, what did it do anyway?” Brendon perked up at the question.
“Well, your Poochyena apparently knows Thunder Fang, which is a really good move, especially for a level five,” he said, holding out the Pokeball. “Usually, you only see that in trained Pokémon, so, I think you got lucky.” Merry took the ball from him and looked at it.
“Any idea how I can actually tell what it knows?” she asked. Brendon nodded as he pulled out his Pokedex.
“Yeah,” he said, sliding it open. “There’s this tab right here, you tap that and it brings up the status of all your current Pokémon. Overall health, moves, abilities, that kind of thing. Most of the time though, the ‘dex is just used for Pokémon tracking.”
Merry nodded in understanding. “Okay, so, basically, if I’ve seen the Pokémon, I can track where to find them?”
Brendon nodded, smiling. “Yep! And if you’ve really impressed Dad or the League, they might upgrade you to National, which tracks every Pokémon not native to Hoenn!” Merry chuckled.
“Well, good thing Umbreon aren’t found in the wild, right?” she asked, looking down at Jinx.
“Breon!” Jinx cried out in reply, smiling. Brendon laughed at the Umbreon.
“Hey, Merry, I didn’t know you had an Umbreon,” he said to her; Merry stiffened slightly before relaxing, Treeko crawling back to her shoulder.
“Well, Jinx used to be Mom’s until this morning,” she told Brendon. “He’s been my best friend since, well, way way back,” she added, bending over to pick Jinx up. That and my lover. Oh, and he made me pregnant, she thought to herself.
Brendon looked at Jinx and scratched the back of his head. “Well, looks like you two are real close then,” he commented, chuckling. “Well, hey, I’m going to head to Oldale real quick, stock up on some things. In the meantime, well, why don’t you try catching a Zigzagoon and Wurmple too, round out the team a bit?”
“Oh, uhh, okay,” Merry said, looking around. “Shouldn’t be too hard, right?” Brendon laughed.
“You say that now!” he barked, bending over laughing. “You may have just, well, you know,” said lamely, pointing at Jinx. The Umbreon and his master looked at each other and rolled their eyes together.
“Ha ha, funny,” Merry said dryly. “Now go, shoo, you’re messing up my fung swei,” she added, waving him away. Brendon shook his head at her antics as he left.
“See you in Oldale!” he said loudly as he soon stepped out of sight. Merry huffed.
“Yeah, see ya!” she responded, giving him a half-hearted finger as she looked down at Jinx and then over her shoulder at Treeko. “Seriously though, it can’t be that hard to find those Pokémon, right?”
[][][]
As it turned out, it was hard. The Wurmple alone took Merry almost a full hour to find and catch. And the Zigzagoon was even worse. She hadn’t known that the Zigzagoon’s fur was colored to where she couldn’t see the damned things. So, she had just spent the last hour and a half chasing something that was even smaller than Treeko!
Now, she was right outside Oldale, messing around with her Pokedex. It seemed that because she owned a Pokedex, all of her Pokeballs were registered to it, which meant that instead of just calling her Pokémon by their species name, she could actually name them. Right now, she was focused on the Poochyena that had hurt Treeko.
She had initially wanted to name it something vicious, but after looking at his nature (apparently, the Pokedex was a licensed psychologist too), well, she just couldn’t. So, Merry thought of a few names for canines that struck her as, well, non-threatening. She thought about it for a while, and then looked at Jinx and Treeko. “Think I should let him out?” she asked them.
Jinx and Treeko looked at each other, the latter holding his tail defensively. [He bites too hard,] Treeko complained to Jinx, who sighed.
[Be as it may, we all need to bond together as an eventual team,] the older Pokémon told the Grass-type, who turned away, sulking. Looking up to Merry, he gave a short yip of agreement. Merry sighed as she pulled out the Pokeball and opened it, the red stream of energy soon forming into a Poochyena.
The Poochyena shook itself, and then began looking around. [What happen? Where I?] It saw Jinx and Treeko and sniffed in their direction. [Who you?] it asked, curious.
Merry could see Jinx’s eye twitch in annoyance at how the Poochyena was apparently speaking. [Young one, my name is Jinx,] he told the Poochyena. [This here,] he added, pointing a paw at Treeko, [Is Treeko. And the human behind is Meredith, my mate.]
The Poochyena whirled around and gaped at Meredith. [Human mate?!] it cried out, jumping up in surprise. [Why human mate?]
[Because we love each other,] Jinx replied, his inner gentlebeast howling in fury at the complete lack of language and grammar skills from the Poochyena. [Also, she is Alpha. What she says, you do. Am I understood, pup?]
The Poochyena whined as it groveled in front of Merry. [Understand,] it whimpered as it crawled over to Merry, looking up at her with pleading red eyes. The young teen tried to resist,… and failed, as she kneeled down and stroked the Poochyena’s fur.
“It’s okay,” she said, trying to comfort the small dog-like Pokémon. “We won’t hurt you. We want to be friends, if you want.”
The Poochyena looked to Jinx for translation. [She wants you to join our, uhh, ‘pack,’] the Umbreon explained. Treeko looked at the two of them, confused. The Poochyena relaxed quite a bit at the revelation.
“Yen, yena!” the Poochyena barked in happiness as he leaned toward merry, licking her hand.
“Well, you still need a name,” Merry said, laughing at the sensation of the Poochyena’s tongue licking her hand as she tried to give it a scratch behind the ears. “How about… Lassie?”
[Lassie good!] the Poochyena replied, springing back playfully. [Lassie good!] Merry smiled as Lassie, as it was now called, responded well to the name. Only for her face to be scrunched up in confusion a moment later.
“Wait, what gender are you anyway?” she asked herself. Leaning to the side, she very quickly saw a set of fuzzy orbs hanging from beneath Lassie. “Okay, well, that solves that question,” she added, standing up. “Okay guys, let’s head on to Oldale, and from there, Petalburg!” Picking up Lassie’s Pokeball, she quickly recalled him, ending his brief moment of play before looking at Treeko and Jinx.
[As you wish, my mate,] Jinx stated humbly as he came to her side, Treeko heading to his customary place on her shoulder. Smiling, happy, Merry and her Pokémon headed into town, where Brendon awaited them.

And that wraps up yet another chapter. As you all may see, not every chapter will have sex. Maybe every other chapter or two, but that’s about it.
On note of the Pokémon involved, Lassie actually was the first one that I caught, and yes, he actually did have Thunder Fang at that level. He was then raised as a core member of my team up until he hit Level 50 or so, still knowing Thunder Fang. As for his name, well, I read a webcomic based on a Nuzlocke run of ‘Pokémon: Emerald’ called Aerity, which is a phenomenal read, it can be found on deviantart. In it, there is a Level 5 Poochyena that the protagonist ‘captures’ named Lassie, who sadly died before he could reach Rustboro at the tender level of eight. So, I named my Poochyena in honor of that Lassie.
Comments and reviews are welcome, as always, so long as they are constructive and can help me make this story better. Also, I am accepting OC’s to use as potential trainers to fight, or Pokémon to capture, within reason; that means, no Champions or Elite Four, and no Legendaries/genderless Pokémon like Voltorb from you all. I have plans on that end. Everything else is fair game.
