Chapter 40: You and Me
—————
The mid-afternoon sun continued to come and go whenever the clouds above would break apart or drift together. The leaves of the trees blocked most of the bright sunlight from reaching down to the ground, leaving only thin, sharp beams that shifted and changed whenever the wind blew through the woods.
Iruni was grateful for the shade; he had left his heavily tinted glasses back home and the partial darkness spared his eyes from too much pain. Part of him wished that he would have grabbed them before he left, but his eagerness to put some distance between himself and the mess that he had been trying to deal with had won out over avoiding any kind of discomfort.
Thinking back on recent events, he guessed that Rikalia felt the same as he did.
Despite their potentially shared sense of urgency however, the pair walked along together at a relaxed pace through the woods, hand in paw. When Iruni had suggested that they take their little stroll, he didn’t have anywhere specific that he wanted to visit, and it seemed that neither did she. The two made their way without taking the lead from the other.
The forest behind his home didn’t have any man-made pathways running through it, but Iruni had gone exploring enough as a child that he was able to recognize some of the more standout landmarks as they made their way past them. He surprised himself with how well he remembered some of them after not having seen some of them for a handful of years.
Their aimless journey was taking them down a gentle slope, leading them to a small creek that ran down along the forest floor. Many small streams would form all around the forest every spring from the melting of the winter’s snow, all joining into one larger flow of water. After years and years, the running water had dug a noticeable scar into the land, but now, during the summer months, only a small trickle of water ran through the bottom of the shallow creek.
“Careful, that rock isn’t as sturdy as it looks,” he said, pointing out a large, flat stone Rikalia was about to step on. Showing her, Iruni tested the rock with his foot, showing how it would easily tip forward even with only a little weight placed on its right side.
The two moved a few steps down the creek and jumped the small distance one after the other, deciding to then continue their walk uphill.
Iruni was slowly beginning to enjoy their time alone together; he felt like a weight was slowly being eased off of his shoulders. Each step that the two took together brought them farther away from the perilous world behind them. However, he found it impossible to completely push his troubled thoughts aside.
He hadn’t said much of anything since they had left. Almost everything that he thought to say seemed to circle back to their situation in some way or another, so he kept his thoughts to himself.
Even if it only lasted for a little while, Iruni had wanted to leave behind everything that had been giving them trouble and give the two of them a chance to experience what it was like to live a normal life. However, the more that he tried to think about what “normal” might be, even if it was something as simple as just a pleasant conversation with the one he loved, the less that he felt that he knew what “normal” might even mean to him.
At this point, “normal” might just mean “without Celebi around”, he thought, wishing he had come up with a better answer for himself.
As he continued to let the silence to drag on, Iruni was sure that Rikalia must have noticed, but if it had been bothering her, she had yet to show any signs of it. Iruni had been taking care with his steps as he walked, making sure not to take any path that Rikalia couldn’t also follow alongside with him, and would look down to check on his Weavile companion from time to time as they walked.
It was very clear that the Weavile had no trouble moving through the partially overgrown forest. Whenever Rikalia caught him looking at her, she only smiled up at him for a moment before turning her concentration back to avoiding low-lying branches and other such plant-life in her way. It was more than likely that she was the one taking more care in their walk; Rikalia maintained her grip on Iruni’s hand the entire time that they had been walking together.
She used to live out here in these woods before we met. She probably knows the area better than I do. Is this boring for her? Maybe she’s fine with just being out of the house, Iruni wondered to himself.
As if to prove him wrong, Rikalia chose then to finally speak up.
“You don’t have to keep stopping yourself,” she told him. She stopped walking, holding onto his hand with a tighter grip to get him to stop as well. “Just say whatever you want to say.”
Iruni turned and looked at her, seeing a kind and determined expression staring back at him. He sighed, annoyed that his efforts to avoid having her worry had backfired. “Sorry. I just wanted us to get away from everything back home, but it’s all I can think about.”
“Don’t keep it all to yourself. I don’t mind,” Rikalia said, squeezing his hand.
“Is that really what you want to do while we’re out here?” Iruni asked. “Talk and complain about everything back home?”
“Well if you won’t start, I will.”
Iruni chuckled, “Oh, go ahead. I’m sure you’ve got plenty to vent.”
“I hate it so much!” Wasting no time, Rikalia’s voice rose as she spoke, but she wasn’t yelling at Iruni. Her heated words simply carried on out into the trees. She had let go of Iruni’s hand and begun pacing around their small spot in the woods. “It just keeps feeling like no matter what happens, we don’t get any closer to being done with this stuff!”
“I know…” Iruni agreed. He sat down on the ground, flexing his right arm. A new wave of tightness and muscle spasms had come and assailed him; less severely than before, but still potent enough to demand his attention.
“And that!” Rikalia pointed at what Iruni was doing. “I can’t believe that after everything we’ve been through, she still messes with us like that! And her future-self is getting involved again! I know it’s still just ‘her’, but it feels like there are two of them…”
“Could be more,” Iruni suggested.
Rikalia frowned, shaking her head. “Don’t say that. I don’t even want to think about the one we have back at the house.”
Iruni looked down at the ground where Rikalia had been walking back and forth, noticing that the dirt and grass had become covered in a thin layer of ice. He chuckled, finally piecing together something he had started to notice ever since their time in Saffron City.
“What?” Rikalia asked.
“Remember back when you used to have trouble using your Ice powers?” he asked her, pointing down at her feet. “Looks like you’ve gotten the hang of it.”
Initially confused—then slightly embarrassed—Rikalia looked around herself, noticing the frozen path she had created by accident.
“You get extra icy when you’re mad,” Iruni summed up.
“So what’s funny about that?” asked the Weavile.
“And who are you the most angry at?”
“Celebi, but I don’t— Oh no, no!” Rikalia shook her head and threw her arms down in frustration. Icicles shot from her fists and into the ground beside her. “Please don’t give her credit for this too! She’s not the one doing this! I am!”
“Hey, hey,” Iruni stood up and knelt down next to her in the icy patch of grass. “That’s not what I was trying to say; just that you’ve gotten a lot better with your ice since she’s been in our lives.”
“See? I got better because of her!” Rikalia’s fur and crown of feathers stood on end, accompanied by another burst of freezing temperatures.
“But you’re not doing it for her,” Iruni offered. He reached out and put a hand on her shoulder. Rikalia’s fur was prickly and cool to the touch. “Whether it’s for protecting yourself, or wanting to… get her out of our lives, you’ve been getting better for yourself, or for me and the others.” As he made his case, Iruni tried to leave out any specific details, hoping to avoid bringing up any bad memories.
“As angry or defeated as you’ve ever felt because of her,” Iruni continued, leaning in close, “you could have let it beat you down and never recover. But you didn’t. You got better in spite of what she’s done, not thanks to something she did.”
“…Is that any different?” Rikalia asked, slowly relaxing and letting go of her angry expression.
Iruni took a deep breath and thought for a moment. He was convinced of his own words, but Rikalia still seemed unsure.
“I don’t know if I can answer that for you, Rika…” he said, disappointed. Iruni let go of her shoulder and stood back up. “If you think that Celebi is responsible for absolutely everything that’s happened since she’s messed with our lives, then yeah they’re the same thing. But if you ask me? I don’t think she deserves any credit for who you are, or the decisions you’ve made in your life. Do you?”
“…no.”
“Then I think you have your answer,” Iruni said. “Besides, it wasn’t Celebi that you were mad at the first time I noticed how you use your Ice when you’re angry. It’s not just her.”
“What was it?” asked Rikalia.
“It was me, remember?” Iruni lightly smacked himself on his forehead, “When you were angry with me for losing at the Saffron City gym, you got really good at making snowballs.”
“I wasn’t mad that we lost,” Rikalia pointed out. “You were ignoring me and hiding the entire reason why we were there.”
“I know…” Iruni relented. He sighed and shook his head. “I’m sorry, this isn’t what I wanted this to be,” he said, gesturing around them vaguely. “I just wanted us to be able to relax and enjoy ourselves away from everything else. Do you want to head back home?”
“No! We’ve barely gone anywhere,” Rikalia said. She pulled on his hand, urging him to move. “Come on, let’s keep going.”
“Alright,” he said.
“What about you?” asked Rikalia, very much taking the lead on this second-leg of their walk. She had let go of Iruni’s hand and moved faster than before. The Weavile would stop and turn back around to look at him whenever the two would speak. “I know you have things you want to talk about.”
Iruni took a deep breath, “Where to even start…?”
“Wherever. I’m here to listen.” Rikalia urged him to continue.
Iruni thought for a moment, unsure of what he even wanted to talk about. As the seconds crept on into minutes of silence, he found that he couldn’t pin down any one thing to talk about. One thing soon stuck out to him as he bounced ideas around in his head, however.
“I know it’s stupid,” he started, grabbing Rikalia’s attention, “but sometimes I feel like… I shouldn’t complain about what’s been going on. So many of the problems in our lives feel like they’re my fault.” Iruni looked down at his right hand just as another wave of tremors shook his arm. “We’re here now because of decisions that I made, so I feel like I should just keep my mouth shut and just try and deal with it…”
“Don’t say that about yourself,” Rikalia said, trying to discourage him from that line of thought. “You’ve only ever done what you thought was the right thing to do.”
“Thank you,” Iruni said, smiling. “It’s just hard to think that this,” he waved his hand dismissively, “is our ‘best’ option. And even if it isn’t, I hate that I can’t think of a better way.”
“You’ll figure something out,” she assured him. “It’s like you said; we didn’t get this far for Celebi’s sake. We’re here because you’ve been thinking about what’s best for us. I think you’ve made the right decisions so far…” Rikalia paused for a moment, glancing away as she continued, “even if I don’t like some of them.”
“Anything specific?” asked Iruni, taken aback by Rikalia’s honesty. “Is there anything you wish I’d done differently?”
Rikalia continued avoiding eye contact with him, bringing their walk to another stop. She crossed her arms and held them close to her chest.
“I won’t be mad,” Iruni offered. He bent down on one knee and waited patiently.
Slowly, Rikalia walked over to him and gently wrapped her arms around his body, burying her face in his chest. She gradually tightened her grip around his torso, digging her claws into his back slightly.
“…I hate it when you push me away,” she said, muffled slightly by the fabric of his shirt. “When we were lost down in those tunnels, you locked me in my ball and kept going on your own. Then after I kissed you, you avoided me so you could focus on Celebi…”
Rikalia leaned back and looked up at him.
“After my family left me behind… you found me and took me into your home. I thought you would be different. I needed you to be different, because I wanted to trust you with… everything.” Rikalia brought one of her hands up to the side of Iruni’s face, “I want you to trust me with everything too.”
Iruni put his hand over hers, gently squeezing it.
“I’m sorry,” he said. “I know I’ve apologized for all of that stuff before, but… I don’t think I ever really knew just how much I was hurting you.”
“I just… I want you to need me the way that I need you,” she said. Gazing into his eyes, Rikalia leaned forward and lowered her voice. “We should be able to rely on each other, the way that mates do. Or… at least that’s how I want us to be.”
“I do need you,” Iruni told her.
“Then… you have me.”
Bending forward, Iruni wrapped his arms around her and pulled her into a short hug.
“Come on,” he said, standing. “We’re never going to get very far if we keep stopping like this.”
“Are you sure you can walk and talk at the same time?” Rikalia poked at him.
“You’re the one who’s been stopping to talk, you know,” Iruni pointed out.
“And If I didn’t stop, you never would have said anything,” she accused.
Iruni gave up in their little back-and-forth, shrugging.
“Yeah, you’re probably right.”
Taking the lead in their conversation yet again, Rikalia asked her next question as she walked on into the woods, looking straight ahead. “Is there anything you do give her credit for?” Rikalia continued moving away from where she had left Iruni for a few moments before turning around. She waved for him to move forward. “Come on, walk and talk.”
“You mean Celebi?” he asked, already knowing the answer. Quickly catching up to her, Iruni stayed a few paces behind her.
“Well…” Iruni stared down at his right hand, feeling his muscles start to tense up once again. “It’s easy to get hung up on the bad things that she’s done. I don’t have to tell you that; we could both go on and on about that stuff. But the good things?”
Rikalia looked back at him for a brief moment, catching his eye.
“She saved us from running into what happened at Ilex Forest. That let us be able to save Kate from that fire. She even healed her; she didn’t have to do that. But most importantly, she let me meet you. Whether or not she was right to do any of those things… I feel like I should pay her back for saving you, you know?”
He saw his Weavile shake her head.
“We don’t owe her anything,” she said. “She was just using us to get Coralis back home. She still is.”
“I don’t care if she has selfish reasons. As far as I’m concerned the good that she’s done for us will always outweigh the bad.”
Rikalia stayed quiet for a moment before responding. “Just barely.”
“Oh come on. You can’t give her a little more than that?” Iruni pushed.
“I won’t forget the things she’s done,” Rikalia told him, looking back with a cold stare. “Not any of it.”
He conceded the point, holding up both hands in defeat. “Alright. I won’t make your decisions for you.”
—————
Iruni and Rikalia continued on their hike together in silence. Neither seemed eager to carry on venting about their own problems, at least for the time being.
However, something else was beginning to occupy Iruni’s mind, with each moment that went by making it harder to push to the side or ignore. Even though Rikalia had encouraged him earlier to speak his mind and not hold back with her, Iruni found himself hesitating once again.
It wasn’t something that he wanted to just talk or complain about—he still couldn’t think of anything to start a conversation with—but Iruni knew what might happen if he didn’t say anything,
I should have brought this up a while ago… We don’t want it to get bad like last time.
“Hey, Rika.” He stopped walking and called over to his Weavile, urging her to stop as well.
She stopped and turned on the spot, curious and unable to read what he wanted from his flat tone of voice.
“What’s up?” she asked.
“Come here.” Iruni tried to not sound too demanding, but he suspected his sudden attitude change might be casting his actions in such a light.
“What’s wrong?” Rikalia immediately shifted in demeanor when she realized how serious Iruni was being. She quickly made her way next to Iruni in just a few light steps. “Did something happen?”
“That’s what I want to see; let me see your hands.”
The Weavile stared up at him in confusion. “Why?”
“Come on, let me see,” he said, kneeling down in the grass. Iruni held out his other hand, beckoning Rikalia to give him her paw. The Weavile raised her arms up in front of her and Iruni grabbed hold of her left paw. He firmly squeezed her hand at the base of one of her clawed fingers.
“Hey!” On reflex, Rikalia’s claw extended in its sharp, curved form. She instinctively wanted to pull her hand away from her trainer’s grip, but she stopped herself. He hadn’t hurt her, but the sensation of Iruni messing around with her claws made her uneasy. “What’re you doing?”
“Just trying to do what any good trainer should,” he told her. “I’m making sure that my Pokémon is in good health.”
Iruni leaned in closely and examined the edge of her claw, looking for any kind of flaw or damage that might be there. He carefully took a finger and gently ran it along the curved, sharp claw. Satisfied, he finished his examination by lightly poking the tip of the claw to test its point.
“They’re fine,” she insisted.
“I still need to check,” he told her. Iruni moved on by pressing on her left paw’s middle digit, repeating his exam with the same level of scrutiny.
“I haven’t been chewing them, see?” Rikalia extended the rest of her claws on her left paw and also held up her right, showing off that all of her claws were in an undamaged state. “I won’t do that anymore… I promise.”
“Okay, I believe you.” Iruni let her paw go free and leaned back. He could tell the rest of her claws were in fantastic shape; even at a glance. “I just had to check. I wanted to check on you. I didn’t back then, and because of that I let it get really bad. I don’t want that to happen again.”
“That wasn’t your fault,” she said. “You weren’t the one biting them.”
“But I should have been the one stopping it from happening. It’s my job to care for you. You know that.”
Standing up, Iruni looked down at Rikalia and held out his hand so they could resume their walk.
“I’m glad you haven’t been chewing them,” he told her. “They look great. I mean it.”
Rikalia stood in place, looking down at her paws. “I’ve wanted to… sometimes… but I’m afraid that if I start doing it again, I won’t be able to stop.”
“What’s been stopping you?” Iruni asked.
“Just some things… I like them like this,” she held up her hands, flexing her claws to their full length. “I want to keep them like this. I want them to be strong. I want to make sure I can be strong when we need it. I don’t want to disappoint Jallen either.”
“That’s Silver’s Weavile, right? What do you mean?”
“He… Even though he saw… the worst parts of me, he believed in me. He saw that there was good in me and he gave me the chance.” Rikalia finally looked up at Iruni, determination spread across her face. “He gave me a claw because he thought I might be worthy of having it. I don’t want him to be wrong about me.”
“I don’t think he is. You definitely deserve to be strong, no matter what. Sounds like he got to know who you are pretty quickly.”
“He also told me that I acted like a clingy, whiny child when he first saw me. You think he’s right about that too?” Rikalia glared up at her trainer, testing his response.
Deciding to play off of her comment, Iruni shrugged, “Maybe first impressions aren’t your strong suit. You did give me a pretty hard bite when we first met. Now look at us.”
“That’s not fair,” she huffed. “I apologized for that over and over.”
“You did,” he agreed, patting her head. “And I still brought you home that night. I’ll always be glad that I did.”
“Uh-huh…” Rikalia walked past him further into the forest.
“I’m just saying that I only got to see your better side later on,” Iruni defended himself. “Jallen just needed to give you a chance.” He watched Rikalia continue to walk away from him, keeping her back turned to him, and come to a stop a few feet ahead of where he was standing.
“Sorry, I’m probably just saying stupid things again.”
Seemingly ignoring him, the Weavile continued to stare intently at something off in the distance. Suddenly, Rikalia moved ahead on her own, hurriedly running off into the woods.
“Hey, what’s wrong? Rika!”
Iruni had to run to catch up to his Sharp Claw Pokémon. While he was worried that he had said something that had seriously upset her, he didn’t think that anything he could say would make her run away from him. Thankfully, she hadn’t run very far. When he found her, Rikalia had wandered into a small patch of open grass in the forest.
She walked around the clearing slowly, looking up and down at the trees that surrounded her as if she were searching for something. Rikalia’s fur stood on end when her gaze came to a halt at the sight of a toppled tree trunk lying on its side.
Iruni noticed the fallen tree and pieced together where they had found themselves in an instant later.
Oh… this is—
“This is the place…” Rikalia muttered almost too quietly to be heard. She turned around and looked to Iruni, almost pleading for help. Louder, she said, “This is where we… where I… where she—!” As her voice broke, she covered her face with her white paws.
Iruni hurried forward into the clearing, coming to a stop kneeling in front of her in the grass.
His Weavile had wrapped her arms around herself, gripping onto her own shoulders as she panted as if she couldn’t catch her breath. She shook her head and closed her eyes. Frost was beginning to form around where she stood.
“This is where she did it… I was here… so was she…”
“Hey, hey,” Iruni held out his arms, trying to pull her attention towards himself instead of where they had found themselves. “I’m right here, okay? Let’s go somewhere else; I didn’t think we’d find this place like this. I’m sorry.”
He gently reached out and rubbed her head, stroking along her feathered crown, all the while saying anything he could to soothe her from the unpleasant memories that had reared their ugly heads.
“We don’t have to go home; we can keep going on our walk,” he offered. “Maybe go for a walk around town?”
Rikalia opened her eyes and stopped shaking. “No…” she growled. Standing up straight, she let her arms relax and fall down to her sides. The Weavile turned away from her human, once again locking eyes with the fallen tree a few strides away.
“I don’t want to go anywhere else.”
The frozen grass around her feet rustled and broke apart as she finally took her first steps toward her target.
Iruni stood back up, unsure of what she would do. He watched Rikalia come to a stop next to the tree lying on its side and look over to where it had fallen from. He could see the broken stump that buckled and snapped still partly sticking up out of the dirt. The stump had been partially covered in moss and grown over by the grass surrounding it, but it was still there.
Right, I had Karros push it off of her.
“This is where we met,” Rikalia told him from across the field. She pointed to where the tree would have fallen. “You found me here… trapped and afraid.”
“That’s right,” he said. Iruni walked over to Rikalia once again, slow and calm. “Kar and I came looking for you.”
“I tried…” she looked over at him. “Look,” Rikalia continued, showing off the shallow claw marks that the trunk of the tree still bore. “I tried so hard to get free on my own, but my claws… they weren’t sharp enough. Just like when I was chewing them, I wasn’t good enough to help myself!”
In a swift blur of motion, Rikalia whipped around and slashed into the fallen tree with her claws, leaving sets of deep scores into the wood. It was clear that the Weavile would have no trouble dealing with such an obstacle now.
“Look… Look!” she spun around and beamed up at Iruni. “I don’t have to be afraid of this place! I’m good enough now!”
Iruni smiled, kneeling down and pulling Rikalia into his arms.
“You were always good enough, Rika… don’t ever doubt that,” he told her.
She nuzzled the side of his face, “But now I’m strong enough to prove it.”
“You’re damn right.”
He let her go and stood back up, looking over the tree that his Weavile had just dug her claws into. Memories of when Iruni first laid eyes on the tree, seeing the trapped Sneasel trying to scratch her way to freedom, came rushing into his mind in alarming clarity. The haunting sound of her cries still sent chills up his spine as he recalled them.
Then, more thoughts began playing out in his mind, from him meeting Rikalia and bringing her home with him, being sent out on the Cartographer mission, to being trapped down in the underground catacombs beneath the Ruins of Alph.
Everything started right here…
Taking a deep breath, he turned around to look at his Weavile who didn’t seem to have notice that he had just been wrapped up in thought.
“How about we take a break?” he asked. Iruni sat on the ground, leaning back against the trunk of the fallen tree with his legs stretched out in front of him. “We’ve been walking for a while. Come on,” he said, patting his lap.
“Here?” asked Rikalia.
“Why not? This place isn’t so bad anymore, is it?”
She looked around with some lingering unease, but shook it off without much trouble. Climbing on top of him, Rikalia nestled up against his chest and laid her head on his shoulder.
“No, it’s not.”
Iruni brought his arms up and wrapped them around his Weavile, pulling her closer to his body. As he took a deep breath, letting his tense muscles relax, he looked out past the branches of the trees above him. Iruni watched a group of clouds pass by the section of open sky, glad that their resting spot had been somewhere in the shade.
“Was this any good at all?” he asked.
“What?”
“You know, us wandering around in the woods for a few hours. Was this a good idea? Did you even enjoy being out here?”
Rikalia nodded, “Yeah, I did.”
“Really?” Iruni looked down at her. “All we even really did was bring up bad memories and talk about everything we wanted to get away from…”
“That doesn’t matter,” Rikalia sat up and looked Iruni in the eye. “We spent time together. That’s what I liked about it. It feels like it’s been so long since we even had the chance. This is nice.”
“That’s good,” Iruni said, relieved. “I was really hoping this wasn’t another one of my failed ideas.”
“Just make sure we can do things like this more often, okay?” Rikalia leaned forward and kissed him, letting it linger for a moment before backing off.
“I promise. And after we get this whole situation with Celebi figured out, things will be different. They’ll be better.”
“I know they will,” she agreed.
“Is there anything that you want to do when that happens?” Iruni asked.
Rikalia looked down in thought for a moment before answering. “I can't think of anything. I just want our lives back. I want to live how we want to live.”
“What about finding your old family?” Iruni offered. “Do you still want to do that?”
Rikalia eyes widened and mouth fell open slightly, Iruni’s question seemed to have surprised her in a way that she was not prepared for. She slowly let her gaze drift away from him, avoiding eye contact.
Iruni almost asked her again, but decided to wait. He knew that she had heard what he said.
When Rikalia finally spoke up after a long silence, her words were no louder than a whisper, “I haven't thought about that in a long time. I don’t even know when I forgot.” The saddened Weavile looked down at her empty hands, at a lost for any more words.
“Well, if my memory is correct, there was a certain blue-feathered Sneasel who really wanted to see her family again. She made me promise to help her one day, when we were ready. I still plan on keeping my promise,” Iruni raised his hand and gently rubbed the side of Rikalia’s head, dragging his fingers over her blue ear feather.
“What does she want?” he asked her.
“I used to want to find them,” Rikalia started, looking back up at him, “because I… felt like I wanted get back something that I lost. But now... Is it bad that I don't want to anymore?”
Iruni shook his head, “No, I don’t think so.”
“But what happened?” she asked, desperate for an answer. “Why don’t I… want to see them like I used to?”
“I think you said it yourself, Rika.” Iruni sat up straighter on his spot in the grass, taking the moment to put his words in the right order in his head. “You said you used to want to find your family again because you ‘lost something’ that you wanted back. I think, since then, you found it again without them.”
Rikalia’s expression softened as she took in the human’s words, piecing together their meaning.
“…You’re right,” she said quietly. Rikalia sidled up close to Iruni again, wrapping her arms around his chest. “I did find family. You, Kar, Kate, Ruby, everyone else…”
“Even…?” Iruni asked, already knowing the answer.
“No.” Her voice was flat and cold.
“I was kidding,” he said, petting her back. Looking up at the sky, Iruni could notice hints of pink and orange were beginning to take over the blue above them. “We should probably start heading back home before it gets dark,” Iruni suggested.
“When?” asked Rikalia. She tensed and shifted in his lap.
“I think we can stay here a little longer, but we did walk pretty far. Don’t want to keep everyone waiting at home for too long,” he explained.
His Weavile turned around on his lap, straddling his legs and looking into his eyes. A silent desire painted Rikalia’s face with an expression of yearning and expectancy. She gripped Iruni’s shoulders gently and leaned in close. Her mouth opened slightly, fighting to let go of the words on the tip of her tongue.
“Go on,” Iruni encouraged her, trying to sound warm and understanding. “It’s okay.”
Rikalia took a deep breath and looked down as she steeled herself to speak. “You said earlier that you wanted us to ‘enjoy ourselves’ out here…” Gathering her nerve, she looked back up and stared into his eyes. “Can we… do something?”
“Like what?” Iruni reached up gently stroked Rikalia’s crown of feathers. “I think I know what you want, but I just want to be sure.”
“I want to… do what mates do…” She stopped and struggled with her words once again. “I don’t mean just kissing, or saying we love each other…”
“I know,” he said apologetically. “So do I.”
Relief instantly spread across Rikalia’s face, saved from having to explain herself. “You do?” she asked.
“I thought we’d find some time since we’ve just been at home,” Iruni said, “but with everyone around all the time, especially her… it just doesn’t—”
“Feel right.” Rikalia finished. “I’ve wanted to, but…”
“Yeah.” Iruni smiled, both in sympathy and in the satisfaction that she felt the same way. “I was afraid that it was just me that wasn’t feeling it with everything going on back home.”
“So, you… do want to mate with me?” Rikalia asked, her words filled with a mix of excitement and optimism.
“I haven’t kept you guessing that much, have I?” he asked. “Sorry. I know I probably haven’t made it very obvious, or even been very open about ‘us’ before, but yes. I do want to.”
Iruni saw Rikalia’s eyes widen and could hear her breath start to pick up in pace.
Once again, the Weavile struggled against her own words, only managing to let loose a single, short question:
“Can we?”
“If you’re okay with…” Iruni waved his hand around, “right here and right now, then so am I.”
“Wait—” Rikalia caught his hand and held it tightly in her paws. “I don’t want you to do this just because I want to,” she pleaded. “You want to do this too, right? You want me?”
“Of course I do,” Iruni told her. “I just didn’t imagine it happening exactly like this. But,” he leaned forward and whispered into her ear, lowering his voice, “I’m sure the real thing will be much better than my imagination.” He tried his best to hide his grin when the Weavile in his lap shivered at his words.
“S-So…” Rikalia pushed herself to speak, leaning slightly away from him. She let his hand go free from her grip, reaching down and lifting up Iruni’s shirt, slowly dragging it up his chest.
Her slow, careful movements told Iruni that she was being very cautious with her clawed hands as she tried to undress him, so he leaned up slightly and finished removing his shirt, tossing it onto the ground next to where they sat.
Rikalia stat upright on his lap, looking up and down at his bare upper body.
“How did you ‘imagine’ it?” she continued, uncertainty clear in her voice. Rikalia leaned forward and put her hands onto his chest, nuzzling under his neck and under his chin. She breathed in deep, murmuring quietly to herself as she smelled him. Reflexively flexing her claws, she lightly scratched at his bare skin in anticipation.
“Do you want me to tell you?” Iruni began. Bringing his hand up under her chin and lifting her head up, he looked deeply into her eyes, “Or do you want me to show you?”
Rikalia answered him with a sweet, gentle kiss.
Iruni leaned into the connection, his hand moving the side of her head. He broke the contact for a brief moment before kissing her again, this time more aggressively than the two ever had before. He knew that Rikalia wouldn’t have had any first-hand experience with how humans had sex, or any of the lead-up to the main event, so he made sure to try and not overwhelm her with anything and try just one thing at a time.
First, he decided that he should introduce her to a more involved way of kissing.
It was clear that Rikalia hadn’t been expecting such a change from something that she had previously been accustomed to. The Weavile’s eyes widened in confusion and she pulled away for a moment, but her curiosity and eagerness to continue won out, and she leaned back in for another kiss, this time trying to mimic the more open-mouthed technique she had just been shown.
He had expected the sensation to be different—he wasn’t kissing another human, after all—but Iruni had no way of knowing exactly how it would feel. The roughness of her tongue sliding against his was to be expected; Rikalia had licked him before. It was the sharpness of her teeth that had surprised him the most. He knew that she wouldn’t bite him as they practiced their deep kiss, but Iruni made sure to concentrate on avoiding the points of her fangs with his tongue.
As the two grew more bold in their light foreplay, the sights and sounds of the world around them soon began to fall away. Only the two of them existed. No one and nothing else mattered.
Abruptly, Rikalia pushed away from him, putting a stop to their first make-out session.
“You okay?” Iruni asked.
She nodded, breathing heavily for a moment. “Just need… to breathe for a second. I kinda forgot. That was… fun!” The Weavile grinned and nuzzled the side of Iruni’s face. Rikalia ran one of her clawed hands down Iruni’s side, speaking in a low voice in his ear, “Is it… time now?”
Iruni grinned, humming lightly as he held her closely.
“How about we try one more thing? If you don’t like it, we don’t have to do it.”
Rikalia whined quietly in disappointment, but relented and leaned back and sat upright on Iruni’s lap once again.
“Here, lie down here,” Iruni said, gently lifting Rikalia off of him and onto the grass.
She did as she was asked and lied down on her back. Rikalia’s breath quickened as Iruni slowly moved over top of her, holding himself above her with his arms.
He leaned down and gently kissed Rikalia at the base of her crown of feathers, then again slightly further down on her forehead. He slowly pressed his lips against hers, then her cheek, and then down her neck.
“Wh-What are you doing?” Rikalia asked.
“Do you like it?” he asked between pecks. The softness of her fur on his lips made him want to linger more and more, but he knew that she was getting impatient.
“Yeah, it’s just a little—” she cut herself off with a sharp gasp.
As Iruni continued to kiss Rikalia around her upper body, he had quietly brought his left hand up in between her legs. It didn’t take very much exploration to find a break in the short, dark fur. He looked her in the eyes as he felt around with his hand, finding the fur slowly becoming damp as he circled his fingers around.
Rikalia’s breathing picked up even more as he rubbed the soft flesh around her entrance. She let out an excited groan, pleading for something more.
Feeling more sure of himself, Iruni pushed himself further down Rikalia’s body, kissing her chest in a few spots along the way, and attempted to guide a finger inside of her. Upon initial entry, Iruni felt his Weavile tense up at the unexpected penetration.
“Hey, don’t just use your hand,” she leaned up, disappointment spread across her face. “I thought we were going to mate, not just act like it…”
“We are,” Iruni told her. He removed his hand from between her legs and pushed himself up to meet her eyes. “I’m just… trying to make you feel good. If you don’t like it, we can leave it for later.”
“I didn’t say I didn’t like it, I just don’t want to wait anymore,” she said, lying back down. “You can do it… if you promise to do the real thing.”
“I promise,” Iruni said.
He bent back down and picked back up where he had left off, gently rubbing around Rikalia’s now-slick entrance and easing in one of his fingers. The Weavile beneath him tensed up again, but didn’t protest. Going forward, Iruni moved his finger in and out, pleased at the reactions he was receiving from Rikalia. Slowly, he started to make more firm and deeper pushes into her.
Through strained moans of pleasure and moving her hips to meet his movements, Rikalia showed him quite clearly that she was enjoying herself. She had closed her eyes and clawed at the ground beside her with her hands from time to time, especially when Iruni decided to introduce a second finger to his rhythmic thrusts of his hand.
Once he felt that he had done enough with his hand, Iruni removed it once again and looked down at the panting Weavile before him.
After a moment without receiving any sort of touch, Rikalia opened her eyes and leaned her head up.
The two of them locked eyes once more. A still and silent moment passed between them.
In a soft, quiet voice, Iruni asked her, “Ready?”
Rikalia nodded.
Thinking he had made her wait long enough, Iruni quickly pushed himself up off the ground and undid the button and zipper of his pants. For a brief moment, he silently wished that what they were about to do wouldn’t be on the bare ground, but Iruni pushed that minor thought aside as quickly as it came.
There would be plenty of other times, after all.
As Iruni kicked off his shoes and removed the rest of his clothes, his own excitement was beginning to get the better of him. His movements started to be unsteady and his breathing was beginning to quicken in anticipation. When he turned back around to face Rikalia, she had sat back up and was watching him with a very intense stare.
“What’s with the look? You’ve seen me naked before, right?”
“It… looks different,” she managed to say, looking down below his waist.
Iruni knew what she meant; his excitement was plainly visible. He knelt back down on the ground in front of her and had to fight off the instinct to back away when Rikalia suddenly reached out with her hand.
She gently grabbed his penis with her paw, claws safely retracted. Gently squeezing and stroking his hard shaft, Rikalia quietly explored the aspect of her beloved human that she hadn’t seen in such a state before.
“W-Well?” Iruni asked, his voice wavering slightly.
“I just… I was a little worried that you wouldn’t… want me.”
“I didn’t always,” he told her, “but I do now.”
“Now…” she repeated. Rikalia laid herself back down onto the grass, keeping her eyes on Iruni’s. She spread her legs outward and presented herself.
Taking a deep breath, Iruni leaned forward over her once again. He held himself up with his right arm planted next to Rikalia and grabbed onto her hip with his left. He pulled her smaller, lighter frame closer to him, doing his best to look down and guide the two of their bodies together.
When he felt like he had gotten the two of them into the best position that he could manage, Iruni looked back up to Rikalia.
Her eyes were wide with anticipation.
Iruni leaned in and kissed Rikalia one more time as he pushed his hips down and forward. Guided by the slick sensation of her warm flesh, he slowly penetrated her until he felt that any more might be uncomfortable. Looking down, he had gotten himself about three quarters of the way inside of her. The tightness that he felt told him that he might not be able to go much further.
The Weavile beneath him whined and grunted, shifting in her spot in the grass.
“Are you okay?” he asked.
Rikalia had her eyes closed, breathing hard and heavy. “Don’t just… stay put. You can move.” She blinked opened her teary eyes and nodded for him to continue.
Doing just as he was asked, Iruni started rocking his hips back and forth, sliding himself in and out of her. He found the position difficult, but he did his best to hold Rikalia in place with one arm while keeping himself propped up above her. Iruni tried picking up the pace and force of his thrusts slightly, still wanting to take their journey into the physical aspects of their relationship slowly, and was rewarded with some very encouraging sights and sounds coming from beneath him.
Sinking her clawed hands into the ground beside her to steady herself, Rikalia hissed and moaned in pleasure. Driven by instinct, she tried to push herself up in time to meet each of Iruni’s downward pushes.
Just when Iruni had thought that he had worked up to a regular rhythm with their mating, the his right arm began to tense up and threaten to give up on him, leaving him to fall forward on top of his Weavile. Iruni paused in his thrusting and hurriedly whispered into her ear through hard breaths, “Put your arms around me.”
It took Rikalia a brief moment to follow through, but she soon wrapped her long arms around his neck.
Taking the chance, Iruni pushed himself upright onto his knees, making sure that the change in position would not make him slip out of her. He quickly grabbed hold of Rikalia’s other hip and pulled her lower body closer to his with both hands. With more force and the addition of gravity, Iruni felt himself sink further inside of his Pokémon than he had before. He groaned, feeling the hot, wet tightness grip him harder than before.
The Weavile in his arms at first yelped in surprise, but soon the noise turn into a shuddering groan of satisfaction. Rikalia pushed herself back and looked up to her human’s face, taking in the look of pure desire on his face and committing it to memory. Leaning back against his chest, Rikalia wrapped her arms around his body, urging him to continue mating with her.
Knowing she was ready, Iruni began lifting her up and pulling back with his hips at the same time, then thrusting forward as he let her drop back down onto his length.
Rikalia shuddered and held onto her mate as tightly as she could; crossing her arms behind Iruni’s back and digging into his shoulders with her claws. She buried her face in his shoulder and brought her legs up, squeezing them against Iruni’s body. Every movement that her human made forced a noise from the Weavile; a mix of tense growls and smooth purrs filled the air.
Iruni sped up his motions, feeling his impending climax fast approaching. He’d hoped that his own strength would last long enough to reach it; repeatedly lifting up Rikalia’s body was quickly beginning to take its toll.
When it became clear that their mating was coming to its end, Iruni closed his eyes and whispered one more time in Rikalia’s ear, “I love you—!”
The two grunted in unison as Iruni thrust into her as hard as he could, punctuating their lovemaking with shared groans of pleasure. They both clutched at each other tight; reeling from the waves of bliss that washed through their bodies.
Iruni stayed kneeling in the grass, holding Rikalia in their final position for as long as he could. He could feel her shake and twitch in his arms; he could hear the soft whines and moans that she made as she rode out her own climax.
With his stamina at its limits, Iruni carefully let go of his Weavile with his left arm and braced the two of them as he lied down on the grass. He rolled onto his back and let Rikalia lay on his bare chest, his arms immediately grateful for a rest.
Surprising him, Rikalia was quick to move and push herself up with her hands. She pulled herself forward along his chest, removing him from inside of her, and gave him a tired, but loving kiss.
“I love you too.”

Even though the sun had nearly set and a dull gloom had taken over the forest, there was nothing but warmth coming from the two that carried on by themselves as they walked together between the trees.
Iruni and Rikalia moved along through the woods with more of a hurry in their step than they had when they first left. Time had gotten away from them and they had stayed together at the fallen tree for longer than either of them had meant to.
“You sure you can get us back home without a map?” Rikalia teased him.
“This isn’t the first time I’ve had to go this way, remember? You were with me.”
“Yeah, so was Kar. And you had a map,” she continued.
“What? It’s just up this way— Ow!” Iruni raised his arm to point in the direction of where he thought they needed to go when his shoulder flared in a fresh wave of pain. He winced as he felt the fabric of his shirt brush against the still-fresh claw marks that had somehow found their way onto him.
“Sorry…” she said sheepishly.
“Are you kidding?” Iruni asked, grinning. He pointed to his tender shoulders, “After what we just did, I’d say these are worth it.”
Rikalia stopped moving and covered her face in embarrassment. “I didn’t know what I was doing!”
“Hey,” he said, gently pulling one of her arms away so he could look her in the eye. “I didn’t notice a thing. Promise. I was focused on something else.”
The Weavile lowered her other hand and grabbed Iruni’s with both of her paws. She looked at him with as much love as she could, “So was I.”
“That being said, I might need your help with putting on some bandages when we get back to the house…” Iruni started walking once again, Rikalia moving along beside him, hand in paw.
“Oh,” he added, “and if Celebi tries to give us any crap about what we were out doing, just threaten to tell her all about it. That’ll shut her up.”
