------------------------------------
Yuushi had opened the door and the incredibly attractive woman standing on the other side took his breath away. She seemed to draw in all the light around her as if she were standing on the center of a stage. The tensai was barely peripherally aware that even the guys in the hallway were too stunned by her beauty to make even snide remarks or comments behind her back. Her face and voluptuous body for an instant reminded Yuushi of an anime when a romantic lead character is introduced looking beautiful and flawless with big shining eyes, full pouty lips, soft flowing hair, and is surrounded by flowers. The very air around her seemed to smell of fragrant flowers and felt charged with a sudden surge of sensual feminine perfection at its finest. For at least two minutes Gakuto's mother was the second most beautiful person Yuushi had ever seen. The first of course was Gakuto, and now the tensai knew where the redhead got his delicate, attractive features from.
The tensai could not even find the words to greet her. He stood there stunned and stupid and mortified because he was certain for his bizarre behavior, Gakuto would murder him later. He finally was able to coherently think, normal, be normal. Gakuto's mother seemed used to being responded to like this, and the tensai slowly realized she expected everyone around her to react like this to her presence all the time. The tensai had a sudden sense that if he had failed to react then she would have felt confused, angered, and perhaps threatened. He realized it was the same as when someone found Atobe unattractive. It occasionally happened and Atobe responded to that person with intense, burning dislike just for not finding him stunning.
She was so accustomed to everyone falling all over themselves in her presence, that she took charge. She smiled and did all the talking, introduced herself, and comfortably took complete control from the tensai. Yuushi almost closed the door on Gakuto's father he was so in awe still of his mother.
It was seeing Gakuto's father that brought him back to his senses. His father seemed to be a plain, average man. His features were average, his build, his height, nothing made him stand out. Gakuto had mentioned once off handedly that his father sold phones. The tensai knew his father was one of the area's leading distributors for cellular phones and service. He was in reality a very wealthy, successful, driven man who surprisingly in person seemed almost meek and humbled, and the man's rapt attention was completely devoted to his wife. He watched her every movement and gesture as she lovingly greeted her son. For an instant, the tensai saw how the man might even be jealous of his own son for the woman's affections. Then in the next moment, his father visibly shook off whatever envy it was he was feeling and warmly greeted his son.
It was fascinating.
Doubly so because the tensai also felt jealous of Gakuto's mother and then his father.
Gakuto greeted his parents warmly. With them he was loving, genuinely affectionate, and he hugged and kissed both of them in greeting. They in turn fawned over Gakuto and insisted he stay resting on the futon. As they talked, Yuushi felt a little jealous that Gakuto and his parents were so close. The tensai had seen families close before but these three seemed very emotionally invested in each other. He pondered if it had anything to do with what happened to Gakuto years ago or if their entire family was close like this. Thinking like this switched the tensai's emotions from being upfront on high to distant background noise and once his emotions were out of the way, Yuushi was free to observe Gakuto's parents clearly.
His mother in particular.
In that moment when he could clearly see her, she completely transformed. It was almost a scary and a magical thing. Suddenly she looked like a normal, forty-something year old woman. Attractive, but no ravishing beauty. Not even very sexy. In fact she was a bit heavy around her middle and hips, she wore too much makeup, her hair was too big, and her clothes were far too provocative for her age let alone a mother of three teenagers.
Her husband and Gakuto still looked at her as if she were a goddess and the tensai realized the woman had some kind of "knack" for attracting people and drawing them to her. He had read about this in a romance novel. It was a magical modern fable of people who possessed "the knack" and although they were not particularly handsome or beautiful, they made everyone around them love and lust for them as if by magic. In the book, a guy who'd had the knack passed down through his family and had broken the heart of every woman in the city they lived in. He ended up in the story head over heels in love with a woman, a newcomer to the city who also had the knack. She not only had it but unknown to him, she had it even stronger than he did. It was a good love story and the tensai had rather enjoyed the magical aspects of the knack and how it affected their courtship and deepening love.
But Yuushi had never thought the knack could ever be a real, true thing.
Gakuto's mother turned and smiled at him. The tensai realized he was still standing there staring. He was smiling stupidly, as Gakuto would say, at the three of them. He also realized that she didn't know Yuushi was now immune to her charms.
People usually like people who like them and he didn't want Gakuto's mother to dislike him so he decided to act still as smitten as most people would be around her. He figured that at least most normal people would act that way with her. The tensai mused that he alone had immunity from her allure and the real reason was sitting right next to her. Her son.
She was pretty and probably had been beautiful when she was younger, but Gakuto also had that same quality that drew people in. He had the "knack" stronger than even his mother and he was young and strong and beautiful. The tensai was used to Gakuto's "knack" although it was part of his attraction for him. Yuushi smiled wider thinking of Gakuto--pleased that for once, he could smile all he wanted and Gakuto would think it was because of his mother.
The tensai now completely acting enthralled, asked if they would like some tea.
While the Mukahi's sipped their tea, Yuushi went to make the phone calls to Atobe and Kabaji from their new semi-secluded bedroom. He smiled remembering how impressed and seemingly moved by the room transformation Gakuto had been. It had not been hard to accomplish. The tensai had been thinking about it since they had first moved in and knew how to move everything to where it should go. Though he only had a limited amount of time, Yuushi simply pictured the room in his mind as a gigantic sliding puzzle and within a matter of minutes was able to slide everything around to where it should be. He was flattered at Gakuto being pleased.
He enjoyed Gakuto watching him dress, but the tensai knew his roommate still wasn't feeling well when he started crying. In fact, he would have to watch out because Gakuto would probably hit him for it later. Gakuto's punches were now soft and thrown more for show than to actually hurt. He wondered if Gakuto was as aware of that as he was.
Yuushi smiled a little wider and tried to keep it out of his voice as he spoke with Atobe.
For a moment, when the little guy was sick and upset and saying sorry to him, Yuushi thought he was going to tell him he loved him. The tensai's heart had caught in his throat and then Gakuto shocked him even more by kissing him soft and loving enough to take his breath away.
Sometimes it was wonderful having a photographic memory.
He truly wanted Gakuto to love him. The tensai was serious when he said he would make him fall in love with him and it looked as if things were slowly heading in that direction. He hoped it was but knew better than to assume or be overconfident. He also knew that Gakuto used sex to express his emotions and he wanted Gakuto's body sexually addicted to his. He smiled at the thought.
Yuushi pondered whether or not his body already was addicted to Gakuto's. He feared it wasn't and that he wasn't as healed from his past as he had thought himself to be. When he first confessed to Gakuto, Yuushi had considered if he was perhaps not as far along in recovering as he liked to think he was. He had decided that it would be okay if he wasn't. He could get by just pleasing Gakuto and perhaps in time he could be able to come to grips with his own self-preservation habit of withholding both emotions and orgasms. He had thought it would be okay.
He had thought that Gakuto would be happy if the tensai pleased him alone. It astounded and touched him to see that Gakuto did want to reciprocate. He wanted things equal. This meant that Gakuto wasn't as cold or unloving as he seemed.
In fact, as the tensai watched him with his family, Gakuto was quite openly affectionate. The tensai had to suppress another wave of jealousy as it washed over him. Someday he wanted Gakuto to reach his hand out for his as he did with his mother. Gakuto's mom talked to him quietly as his father, nearly forgotten, puttered around in the background waiting for his wife to finish and turn her skilled attention and favor back to him. Yuushi looked over at Gakuto and his mother speaking quietly together and felt a strong empathy for the waiting man. He had often found himself waiting for Gakuto to finish up with other people and anticipating the time when his attention would again fully be on the tensai.
The tensai was now fairly convinced Gakuto had made himself sick because he thought Yuushi was going to leave him. Yuushi could not recall a single day when Gakuto had been so ill and after Yuushi reassured him that he was not going to leave, even with the shot, Gakuto seemed now completely recovered. The tensai was not certain if it was because Gakuto feared if the tensai left he would no longer be protected. He considered that may be a part of it, but he remembered what Gakuto had said without thinking about how normal people wait until its real before making love and suspected it was not that. Or not only that. Regardless, Gakuto didn't want him to leave which was a wonderful thing. Especially after so difficult a day.
At first, when Gakuto was not speaking to him, Yuushi was devastated. He felt beyond dejected. He had mistakenly thought Gakuto was disgusted that he had allowed the years of abuse to happen to him. He had thought Gakuto was rejecting him. He now realized at the same time Gakuto had mistakenly thought the tensai was rejecting him. He had spent so much of the day looking for Gakuto or trying to get him to speak to him that the tensai had not noticed Gakuto was making himself ill.
Yuushi smiled. He had felt nervous and scared when he'd told Gakuto about his past, but he knew Gakuto would attempt to seduce him otherwise. He also deduced that Gakuto's seduction attempts would become increasingly more inventive and perhaps the tensai would not be able to stop him--unless Yuushi were to give him a clear reason why at least waiting was better.
Still, Gakuto's reasoning abilities impressed the tensai who thought he was going to have to explain to him slowly to make him understand. Immediately Gakuto had correctly jumped ahead to the reasons for the tensai's sexual awkwardness and reluctance. It truly was not that Yuushi didn't want to make love to him--this morning he almost had--however, Yuushi was worried.
He was actually afraid to make love to him. Not that he wouldn't please Gakuto because even without coming, Yuushi had learned what to do to please a lover very well, but he was afraid that if Gakuto reached for him, Yuushi would freeze. It had happened before. It was the primary reason why he had left so many lovers behind--besides his growing feelings for Gakuto, Yuushi would freeze up and withdraw if someone got too close to him.
He wasn't even aware of all his triggers.
Once, someone ran their hand down along his spine during sex, and he froze, remembering horrible memories his mind had kept from him until then. Another time, someone had tried to wake him with oral sex and still mostly asleep, he had violently punched the person. To his horror, it was a girl, and she had a black eye for a week after.
The tensai worried that something could set him off with Gakuto, and he might withdraw--or worse yet, physically hurt him. He would rather hurt himself than ever hurt Gakuto. He worried how much him even if he was asleep, striking Gakuto would devastate them both after so much trust had built up between them. That was the main reason why Yuushi had wanted to ask for separate bedrooms.
That and to try to cut down on temptation. His and Gakuto's mutual temptation of each other. But thinking to put space between them for Gakuto's sake had actually hurt Gakuto. The tensai felt damned if he did and damned if he didn't--so he wouldn't. Perhaps he should try talking to Gakuto, he thought, and then he wondered if Gakuto would try harder thinking there might be physical danger involved or not. Gakuto still labored under the mistaken idea that he enjoyed rough sex. This upset the tensai.
He was still wondering about this when he noticed the babbling voice on the other end had gone silent. "Are you even listening to me Yuushi?" Atobe sounded extremely annoyed. "Or are you just speechless because you're surprised? Are you there?"
"I...I'm here," Yuushi said and tried to recall what Atobe had said. To his dismay he couldn't, "Could you repeat that please?"
"No, you heard me right the first time. I told you the attacks have been increasing. Two more students this week and tonight you're fortunate Gakuto was ill because his workout parter was attacked at the gym. He's in the hospital and you're going to have to find a way to tell Gakuto. They say the guy is going to be fine but he's pretty badly beaten up... and he was raped."
"Workout partner?" Yuushi said lamely and felt his heart pounding in his chest. Gakuto would be extremely upset. "The freshman?" Three nights a week Gakuto worked out with a talented freshman kid doing gymnastics. The tensai had followed him there and back nightly trying to make sure Sato didn't corner him or anything.
"Oh, you know about him?" Atobe said knowing full well Yuushi followed and watched out for Gakuto.
"I...I'll tell Gakuto. May we be excused from morning workout to visit him?" Yuushi wasn't going to leave Gakuto alone-- perhaps never again. He may have only dropped Gakuto off and gone to the library while he worked out. He had done this before to watch him come and go. Had the tensai done that, Gakuto too may have ended up in the hospital. Or worse. It was unthinkable.
Atobe made a noise as if he was thinking, "No, sorry. I can't do that. Not after he was out this afternoon. It would be too hard for him. Go in the afternoon. I'll arrange for it to be okayed by the hospital and the boy's bills will be covered if his family needs help even though he is not on the tennis team. He may have to leave the school if he doesn't already want to. There are probably already rumors spreading. Tomorrow I'm going to announce doubles practice for the next week. The coach has already agreed it's for the best right now and it will be cleared with the faculty. You and Gakuto of course will be paired. Acceptable?"
"Yes of course. You think that will help?" Yuushi was not convinced and then understood, "If it's one of our own, you'll know."
Atobe made a noise of agreement but did not sound happy about it. The elders must be forcing his hand. "I don't think its Sato or anyone from here. Not even OBs would go that far this many times." OBs, the Old Boys, the students who graduated and moved on to Hyoutei High School. It was on the same campus and there had been incidents in the past. One in particular when a couple of OBs were jealous their freshman year of Atobe's talent. It had been the Captain and his best friend who fought them back when the two big guys attacked Atobe thinking he was alone. The OBs had been upset that their little brother was not chosen for Vice Captain. After that, Atobe with their coach's approval, began their intensive sub-regular program, and he was simply never alone. Now everyone did whatever Atobe wanted and the team protected their queen bee unconditionally.
"I agree, but my hands are tied." Atobe said. Yuushi was curious for a moment to know who Atobe would choose as his own doubles partner. He knew better than to ask if it would indeed be Shishido. "Unless I have some other proof. Perhaps Gakuto's gymnastics partner will mention something to him that he didn't say to anyone else."
"I'll have him ask Keigo. I'll have him talk to him, all right?" Atobe asking for a favor was rare and Yuushi decided to not hold it over him. Directly the tensai said, "After all, I owe you."
Atobe sounded like he was smiling, "So things at least there are going well. I'm glad."
"Well," the tensai said honestly, "he hasn't killed me yet."
"It looked like he tried today." Atobe said laughing slightly.
Yuushi smiled. He had not felt well with Gakuto vomiting on him and had to mentally fight back the surges of his own nausea. He had because at that moment, Gakuto needed him. He was vulnerable, sick, and needed him. How could Yuushi not be there for him? The tensai thought of something, "Atobe, do you know who the three stooges are?"
Without hesitating their Vice Captain said in a very perplexed tone of voice, "Moe, Larry, Curly, and Shemp? Those three stooges you mean? Why?" Oh. The tensai thought. He had never considered the possibility there might be four three stooges. Perhaps that was the humor involved. He would have to look this up.
"No reason." Yuushi said and knew Atobe would just think he was being a crazy tensai again. "Thanks Atobe."
He got off the phone with him and called Kabaji. He asked him to pick up dinner and said Atobe had approved but Kabaji could call and check. The hulking freshman readily agreed to bring them whatever Yuushi asked for. He said he was happy Yuushi had called because he was concerned about Gakuto being sick. Gakuto's former roommate said he missed him and Yuushi knew to get off the phone with him before he started chatting up a storm. Once he started talking, Kabaji was impossible to get away from, so the tensai said Gakuto was feeling weak from hunger to get the big guy off the phone and moving.
When the phone calls were finished, Yuushi went back out to join the Mukahi family reunion, which seemed to be wrapping up--although slowly. Yuushi needed to talk to Gakuto and he didn't want to have to say to him what he had to say.
He wanted to make sure Gakuto was all right and spend time with him. He had other things, things about himself that he wanted to discuss with him. For so long the tensai had made excuses about it not being the right time, and now there never seemed to be enough time. Gakuto's mother was hesitating to leave, and Yuushi had realized that in many ways she was narcissistic like Atobe. When she again said they should be leaving, but made no motion to actually stand and go, the tensai protested asking her to stay longer as he would often do with their Vice Captain. As with Atobe, someone protesting her leaving, gave her the actual impetus to depart.
But not before kissing her son again and smiling at the tensai while insisting Yuushi walk her and her husband downstairs. On impulse, even knowing that Gakuto's mother might suspect he was not as enthralled as he seemed to be, the tensai paused and locked their door. He double checked that Gakuto was safely locked inside. Then Yuushi walked Gakuto's parents down, making small talk and giving sincere assurances that he would watch out for their son.
Before she left, he was surprised that Gakuto's mother hugged him, but he was stunned when she whispered in his ear, "Just so we're clear, you hurt my son or let him get hurt and I will personally kill you. All right?" She pulled back and smiled charmingly.
Yuushi was stunned but his shock was tempered from dealing with Gakuto on a regular basis. He realized on reflection that he should have expected something like this all along. Gakuto had learned from the best apparently.
"I understand completely. I would rather be hurt than let anyone or anything hurt him," the tensai replied meaning every word.
She beamed at him again as if trying to make him react, "I was not born wealthy or smart so I use what I have, do you understand me?" The tensai nodded in acknowledgment. Gakuto's mother looked surprised at him. He supposed he had let his mask of enthrallment of her "knack" slip away in his honestly. She smiled as if still trying to intensely charm him and then stopped. In a surprised tone of voice she said, "Even gay men are...affected. You really aren't?"
Yuushi smiled, "I'm not gay if that is what you mean." It wasn't, and he knew it as well. The tensai explained, "I am not immune ma'am, however I deal with someone astounding on a daily basis who possesses his mother's gifts, charm, beauty, and more."
Gakuto's mother took a long hard look at the tensai who was being sincere so he didn't flinch. Finally she spoke, still ignoring her husband who was standing there holding the door open for her and she ignored the other students staring at her and their whispered conversation. She ordered him, "Then you take good care of my son."
Yuushi nodded in agreement solemnly.
"And yourself." She seemed to add it as an afterthought and walked out the door without looking back.
Yuushi smiled and went to walk back to their room. He ignored the mumbled questions around him asking who the gorgeous babe or the movie star was. Because everyone was used to the tensai occasionally being deep in thought and unreachable, it was very easy to return quickly to their room.
For some unexplained reason, the tensai felt tense. It wasn't just his reluctance to tell Gakuto what he had to, no. Somewhere in the pit of his stomach, the tensai felt something was wrong.
He didn't wait for the elevator, instead he started to run up the stairs, taking them two and then three at a time in his haste. Yuushi heard a noise even from down the hall as he reached their floor. He saw several people stick their heads out the door and rapidly pop them back in as he ran by. They didn't want to get involved and were burying their heads in the sand.
Typical Hyoutei.
The tensai rounded the last corner at a dead all-out sprint.
He saw the problem instantly and knew his fear was justified. Sato was pounding on their door.
"SATO!" the tensai bellowed but did not stop running. He slammed into him, using his speed and weight to most efficiently knock him to the ground. Yuushi took all the anger he had out on Sato's face and body with his fists. He hit Sato to diffuse the rage he felt towards him for ever hurting Gakuto, the anger the tensai felt at having to tell Gakuto more bad news, and the stress of his own sexual frustrations over the last few days.
The tensai had to admit, Sato made a good punching bag although the tensai knew his attack and advantage was a mixture of his rage and Sato's surprise more than anything. Sato must have been waiting for him to leave figuring the tensai would be going out alone at some point.
Along the floor were roses, strewn and trampled underneath them as they wrestled around.
The only thing that stopped the tensai was his name yelled, "YUUSHI!"
The tensai turned to yell at Gakuto to get inside and lock the door. Sato got one good hit in right then to the side of his head when his attention was diverted.
Gakuto, cursing like a drunken sailor, reached down and grabbed the tensai by the hair, "Get inside stupid! NOW!" Then he turned to Sato, "Stay the hell away from me! I'm calling Atobe right now!"
The tensai moved fast to get inside before Sato could get up and force his way in. There was a moment when the two on either side of the door wrestled for control of it. Gakuto threw his weight to the door and slammed it shut.
The tensai snapped the locks shut and they heard Sato pounding on the door. He was yelling, "Gakuto? I heard you were in the hospital. I just came to make sure you're all right! Please let me talk to you. I just want to talk! Look, I brought you flowers! Come on! Open up! I just want to talk! Please?"
Sato continued to plead, beg, and promise. Gakuto apparently couldn't take it anymore and went to yell back at him.
The tensai covered his mouth with his hand to be quiet. He reached over for his phone and called Atobe. When Atobe asked what the problem was, the tensai held the phone to their door. Gakuto actually started to laugh as Atobe got an earful, and though shaking with adrenaline, Yuushi started laughing too.
He held the phone up to his ear, "He hung up," he whispered and they laughed harder at that.
"Stupid Yuushi!" Gakuto whispered at him and punched him in the arm softly. "You okay?"
The tensai nodded.
"He must have been watching Yuushi, the minute you were gone he was there banging and carrying on. I wasn't worried he would break the door or anything, I was just worried what would happen when you two saw each other. Damn Yuushi, I've never seen you fight like that before." Gakuto's eyes were wide as if in amazement.
"I was scared," Yuushi admitted. "Not about me, but I almost didn't lock the door when I walked your parents down. I thought if Kabaji came by, then you wouldn't have to get up, and I would only be gone a minute, and..."
Gakuto took the tensai's shaking hands in his own. Yuushi felt his heart pound from the small gesture but then he realized that Gakuto wasn't looking at his face. He looked at Yuushi's arms and said, "Damn it Yuushi, you're not all right, stupid. You're all scratched up! Yuushi?"
Yuushi was angry at himself and he held Gakuto close to him. "If anything happened to you...I'm so sorry..."
"Knock it off Yuushi, we gotta go get you cleaned up!" Gakuto bounced up off the floor and dragged the tensai to the bathroom.
He ignored Sato and the pounding on the door. They both did until it suddenly stopped. They looked at each other and the tensai thought he probably should have shoved a desk in front of the door or called the police. The tensai's phone rang making them both jump.
He answered his phone and Atobe said, "Open the door, it's us."
Shirtless and scraped up the tensai moved to the door and gestured for Gakuto to stand back just in case. He opened the door and Atobe, Kabaji, and several large senior tennis club members were there. Including the Captain who said he was glad they were both all right, and Sato would be punished. Sato was nowhere around. He and the seniors left after asking if they needed anything. Atobe answered their Captain for them, he thanked him and said they did not.
Atobe looked at their state of undress and the mess in the hallway and offered, "Would you like Kabaji to stay here tonight?"
"No thank you." Yuushi said. The tensai hoped Atobe didn't mention anything about Gakuto's gymnastics partner. "It would probably be better if he stays with his current roommate."
Meaning he could watch Sato.
Atobe nodded and then stood there a moment. He seemed to be thinking of something, "Gakuto, I need to talk to you tomorrow about some things. Both of you actually, but call me tonight if you need any..."
Before he could say anything else Jiroh appeared around the corner, "Atobe, come on! You promised to sleep in my room tonight! Oh, hey guys. Come on, Atobe! You haven't seen my new laser light show projector!" Jiroh lived right down the hall in a large corner single. It was even bigger than their room.
Atobe looked less than pleased. "Yes, fine, only you don't need to announce it to the entire floor Jiroh. As I was saying, call me?" Atobe looked like he wanted to be rescued but Jiroh was already dragging him away and enthusiastically yelling at him to 'Come on, Atobe!'
Kabaji handed them the food he had brought for them and slowly padded away after they thanked him. Yuushi locked the door behind them and ignored the mess in the hallway. He started to empty the bag on the small table they had used for homework and eating in the last day. "If it's cold, I can warm it?"
Gakuto shook his head no and walked over to where he was. "I don't care, I'm starving. What'd you get?" Gakuto looked at the food and blinked, "No way! But...but you hate this kind of stuff!"
"You can eat it? With your stomach? If not, I can make you something plain?" He realized fried chicken and a strawberry milkshake might be too hard on the stomach of someone who had gotten sick all afternoon.
"Hell yeah! Damn Yuushi, you even had him get it at the good place!" Gakuto tore into his food and made noises of delight.
The tensai ate a few bites because he was rather hungry but he knew he would have to take a heartburn pill later or he would be in agony. "Eat slowly." The tensai warned. He put his food down because he wouldn't be able to eat until he told him. "I don't wish to upset you, but I have more bad news to tell you. Should I wait until you've eaten?"
"How bad?" Gakuto said around a mouthful of food. He looked at the tensai. "Oh, that bad? Damn, then yeah, tell me after I eat and take a bath. Okay? Unless you gotta tell me now?"
"No, it'll keep until then." Yuushi took a sip from the shake he had gotten. It was far too sweet for him. "You can have my shake, I'm going to make more tea. Would you like some?" Gakuto shook his head no but watched Yuushi carefully. The tensai thought about getting himself something more bland to eat before bed but decided that rejecting all of Gakuto's food would be too much of an insult. The fried chicken while nutritionally devoid of any redeeming qualities actually tasted quite good. When his tea was done, he rejoined Gakuto.
"We'll clean you up after we eat Yuushi. Wanna take a bath with me?" The tensai nodded because he was chewing. "I like the room like this." Gakuto said as if trying to sound cheerful. The tensai looked at him babbling as if trying to make small talk. "Was it bad?" Yuushi looked at him not sure what he meant. "Really bad? Damn it. Okay, Yuushi. All right tell me, how bad did she threaten you?"
