Rise and Fall of Kira

You know the drill–I don’t own Death Note, Yadda, yadda.

Warning: I decided to mix it up by putting in some scenes that you won’t see in any of the Death Note Series. Movie, Manga, or Anime…you name it. I’m also speeding up the story until it gets to the parts that I’m eager to write, so if it seems a little disorienting then I’m sorry. And if you haven’t noticed from the last chapters, but I don’t have a beta-reader. However I hope this won’t stop you from enjoying the plot that I’m writing now.

Warning: Borrowed some scenes from the first Death Note Movie and tweaked it slightly. IF you haven’t seen the movie yet, then the following may be a spoiler for you. Shiori’s from the movie, after all. =\ Of course like I said, I tweaked the scenes slightly so it’s not exactly the same as the movie. Still, I thought I should warn you.

It was Saturday night, and Ryku was impatiently waiting for Light to be done with his family dinner. He was so looking forward to having his apples again…

Ryku was also resisting the tempition to tease Light about last night, as he knew it would probably get him in “ trouble ” with Light, and then Light wouldn’t give him his apples like he had promised.
Still, it had been interesting to see what humans did for self-pleasure…he wondered if he had done things like that as a human, since he didn’t remember his past life.
He didn’t know why Light was so bashful about his body, as seeing he had liked what he saw when he was secretly spying on Light in the shower. Come to think of it… why would he do that if he knew there was cameras everywhere in the house?
Ah, now that he thought of it… he had forgotten to tell Light about the cameras that was located in the bathroom. Heheheheh, what a silly mistake…oh well, Light never asked him about the bathroom, did he? He wondered if anybody else who might had been watching too also liked what they saw. Heheheheh….

Finally the tedious family chatter and dinner was at an end, and Light was picking up one of the tasty apples out of the fruit bowl and going upstairs. Ryku was upstairs in a flash before Light even opened his bedroom door, and Light was grinning as he threw the apple at Ryku.
Ryku caught it in his mouth almost like a dog. He then chewed it up, savoring the juices that ran around inside his mouth.

“ Finally it’s all over. I’m glad that I only had to put up with that tedious charade for a week. Still, I hope it all paid off. If L thinks that I’m investigating Kira on my own, and sees how clever I can be…then there’s a chance that he might request that father asks for my help… And then I might get a chance to see L in person.” Light said, sitting in his chair smugly.

Ryku swallowed the remains of the apple, and then asked: “ But aren’t you afraid that your father just might ask you to stop your own investigation? He doesn’t seem the sort to let you do such a ‘dangerous’ thing… he heh.. He was sure looking at you strangely at dinner. He really wanted to ask you about it, I could tell…”

Light’s usual wide, brown eyes narrowed and his pupils turned into a reddish hue. He started to smirk in a rather psychotic way. “ If my charade didn’t work, I have another plan that will surely get my father to allow me to join the team…And I’ll use the ‘love of my life’ as bait… ”

“EH? ” Ryku noticed that change instantly, and he wondered what ‘Kira’ was up to.

Kira-Light chuckled. “ You’ll just have to wait until tomorrow to find out… ”

The next day Light went shopping with his girlfriend Shiori. Ryku was waiting for the ‘interesting thing’ that was supposed to happen, since it was boring so far.

Light acted a little bit distant, pretending to seem troubled. Shiori then dragged the two of them to a outside table that was located by an cafe.

“ You seem troubled about something. You’ve hardly spoke today on our date today…is anything wrong? You can tell me anything… you know that, right? ” Shiori asked as she held his hand and smiled.

It was then Light brought up the topic of Kira. He looked around, and then leaned to whisper: “ Well… I’m not supposed to tell anybody this. But since you’re close to me… I guess I can tell you. Shiori, did you know that my father is working with L on the Kira case? ”

Shiori’s eyes widened. “ What? Really? ”

Light nodded.

Shiori blinked, and then she hugged him. “ I can see why you’re so troubled. Kira’s such a horrible, vicious criminal… your father’s putting his life on the stake working such a huge case! ”

Light smiled. “ No, that’s not it… I’m actually very proud of my father. He’s fighting for what he believes in. He’s such a strong person, I have no doubt that he will be fine. ”

Shiori looked puzzled. “ Not that I disagree, but what is it then that you’re troubled about? ”

Light embraced Shiori, and gazed into her eyes with a tender yet serious expression which made her heart skip a beat.

“ I was just wondering… ” Light asked, still holding that tender, serious gaze. “ how would you feel if you found out that I was working on the Kira case? It would mean that I would be away from you for long periods of time. I wouldn’t be able to call you, and the worse part, I wouldn’t even be able to see your beautiful face even just once when the case picks up pace. I would have to do this, in order to prevent you from getting caught up in something dangerous. Would you be okay with me fighting against Kira in the name of justice…if it meant that we had to be apart for a while?”

Ryku started sniggering, wondering what was going to happen next.

Shiori’s eyes widened, and she took in a deep breath. Just when she thought that Light couldn’t get any more admirable than he already was. And on top of it, he looked like he was torn apart between wanting to be together with her and fighting against Kira. It was such a dramatic and a heroic thing that couldn’t help but appeal to that certain side of her. He was being such a perfect boyfriend that she couldn’t believe it!

To tell herself the truth, she had started to doubt whenever Light was a good boyfriend for her or not.
Especially since the day when she and light had argued over the topic of death row and kira. Light had overheard her and his sister discuss the topic of Kira as the three was on their way upstairs in Light’s home. And then when they were alone in Light’s room, Light had let it slip that he couldn’t blame Kira for thinking the way he did, especially when the courts was sometimes way too lenient on certain criminals. This of course had upset Shiori, as she never thought that Light would actually feel that way. She actually felt the opposite of Light. So they had a very heated debate on whenever it was wrong to legally execute criminals, as seeing it made the people of the law no better than Kira. In fact, her opposing viewpoint of the death penalty made her despise what Kira was doing even more than everyone else she knew.
After that day, she had wondered sometimes if it was okay for a couple to have felt so differently on the issue, and if it made them a good couple or not.

The reason why she had continued to be his girlfriend was because he was not only handsome, but he was so smart and skilled in almost everything so she was willing to overlook that. After all, she was so lucky to have a boyfriend that every girl wanted. After all, Light wasn’t so bad especially since he was going to be a detective just like his father. That wasn’t to say that she didn’t love him… she truly did. That’s just sometimes there was times when he was so cold when it came to certain subjects, and it made her wonder about him sometimes. But it was tender moments like this that reminded her all over again why she had fallen in love with him in the first place.

Just as she was about to say that she was going to support Light and do her best to be strong too, the couple was interrupted by a woman in leather.

“ Excuse me, but your parents told me that you might be found here. ” The woman addressed her first, and then turned to look at Light. “ My name is Miss Maki Shiokoi. I would like to ask you two some questions about the bus hijacking that took place around last week. ”

With that, the leather-bound woman gave Light her name card.

“ Excuse me… ” Shiori said in a tone that was almost snooty and rather cold. She was annoyed at having this little moment between her and Light interrupted, after all. “ But if you’re with the news media, I don’t want to talk to you. And I’m pretty sure that Light wouldn’t appericate being hounded too. ”

Ryku started sniggering again, while Light just raised one eyebrow.

This was the first time that he had ever seen Shiori this cold and rude to anybody. And the odd thing was, he kind of liked it…
But that aside, he recognized this woman, and he was pretty sure that she wasn’t with the media. She had something to do with that FBI guy who had been following him since he had seen her come to his side when he died at the train station.

Miss Shioki stiffened at Shiori’s rudeness. “ I’m not a news reporter. I’m actually with the FBI. The reason why I want to ask you questions is because you two met Raye Reybar. ”

Light gave the woman his best blank gaze as if he didn’t regonize that name, and Shiori reminded him: “ Wasn’t he that agent who was on the bus when it got hijacked? I remember him telling us his name. ”
Light pretended to remember now. “ Oh yes. That man who was following me for three days . ”

The woman gave him a hard stare, obviously a patented one that was meant to intimidate suspects. “He was on a case to discover the true nature of Kira. While investigating Kira, he was murdered. ”

Light seemed surprised, asking: “ But how can that be? ”

“ Don’t you know? ” The woman asked, still giving that cold, hard stare. ”You admitted that he was following you. So he must had suspected you were Kira. ”

Light just raised one eyebrow as if he couldn’t believe what he was hearing. “ So I killed him? Is that what you’re trying to say? ”

The woman came closer, her expression still cold and unchanging. “ As long as Kira knows the name of the person, he can kill them. So you used the bus hijacking to figure out Raye’s name. ”

Light shook his head, smiling in disbelief. “ You’re seriously a strange lady, you know that right? Raye did not die after meeting me! ”

“ It was three days after meeting you. ” Maki simply stated.

“ Sorry if this offends you but… ” Light said, looking apologetic. “ But if it was really me, but I think I would had killed him after knowing his name. ”

Ryku was now laughing loudly instead of the quiet sniggering that he was doing before.

Shiori became fully annoyed at the woman’s lack of respect and tact. And on top if it, she had completely ruined the moment where shiori would had shown Light just exactly why he loved her so… By being the perfect supportive girlfriend.
She pulled Light away slightly, holding on to his arm. “ How could Light be Kira?! Don’t you even know WHO he is? Who his father is? There’s a limit to what you can say, after all! ” She practically hissed at the leather-bound woman.

Light nodded. “ Shiori’s right. I’m going to have to write down what you told me so that I can report it to the police. If you keep this up, I might have to sue you for harassment. ”

Maki didn’t even bat an eye and told them: “ The reason why you couldn’t kill him off the bat is because it would make you the prime suspect. So you bidded your time because you wanted to use him to find out the names of the other agents in japan and kill them all. Am I right?

With that, he started looking at the name card and pulled out a scrap page of the death note that he had been carrying around. “ So all the agents died? ” He asked if as he was genuinely interested.

Shiori scoffed. “ So why wasn’t this on the news? ”
Maki answered, “ This was supposed to be a secret mission where America and Japan was cooperating to catch Kira. ”

He then started writing as if he was actually writing down all the information she told him. But Light wrote down this: “ Maki Shioki suddenly remembered something she had to do, and went to cross the road but was hit by a vehicle. She died from the head impact. ”

Ryku noticed this, and just laughed even harder. Light gave him a quick glance, wondering what was up with the reaper.

Shiori shook her head in disbelief. “ Lady, are you even listening to yourself? If it was really so secret, then why the hell are you telling us this? You’re not exactly sounding creditable right now, you know. In fact, it all sounds like crazy lies invented by some crazy woman.” Shiori glanced at Light. “ Light, I don’t trust her at all! ”

Maki continued, as if the two didn’t say anything at all, “ And then in the subway where Raye died, you used your cunning to get the names of the agents from Raye. Thus killing them all. ”

Light then looked at the time, and then looked at his girlfriend. “ We’re wasting time here with this lady. It’s about time that we went home. ”

Shiori nodded. “ The most sensible thing I’ve heard so far! ”

With that, he gathered everything that belonged to them and got up to leave. Shiori was doing the same. As the pair left, Maki yelled after them: “Light Yagami! There is no use killing me! For I did not use my real name! ”

The couple halted in their tracks. And Light turned his head slowly, his narrowed eyes burning dark crimson. It seemed as if Maki had captured Kira’s attention.

“ Don’t you speak to him like that! Just leave us alone.” Shiori yelled, quite angry now.

Maki walked by them with a slightly smug look on her face. “ Raye was my fiancée…I’ll find his murderer, and I’ll make sure that he gets his punishment. ”

With that, the woman dressed in leather left.

Light looked at Shiori. “ You hear that? She used an fake name… Just for a couple of regular people like us. ”

Shiori snorted. “ I know, right? Talk about a completely crazy woman! ”
With that, the two of them laughed off the uncomfortable situation, even though the laughter wasn’t completely sincere…

The two of them went home to their own houses, and it was around night when Light finally sat down to talk to Ryku about the day’s event.

“ So, did you know that she was going to appear? You did promise me a interesting day, and boy, you sure delivered! ” Ryku giggled.

The red gleam in Light was growing stronger, and Light smirked evilly. “ Well, she wasn’t part of my plan to be honest. I was going to originally have Shiori take the fall for being kira and then kill her somehow. But now this new threat has appeared… I’ve actually came up with a much better plan. Killing two birds with one stone you might say. Or in this case, my death note…”

Ryku tilted his head. “ Killing Shiori and that woman? I see. I won’t ask how you’re going to do that, as it would ruin the fun. However… you must know that shiori really does love you. Don’t you have any feelings for her back? ”

Light’s expression contorted slightly, as if he was fighting some internal battle. Finally, he said–“ I… I don’t know. ”

Ryku sniggered. “ not even letting your personal feelings get in your way. Light, you’re more like a true reaper than most of us reapers are! ”

Light smirked again. “ Well, I AM becoming more than just a mere human…I have to, if I’m going to rule this world. ”

“ Heheh…boy, you have no idea… ” Ryku thought, grinning like a fool.

The days seemed to pass too quickly for Ryku. But he supposed it was because he was having so much fun watching the events unfold. Those humans never let him down when it came to entertainment, that was for sure. Especially with Light. He was awed at how Light was able to use his skills to control the events that unfolded before his eyes. Light was truly an amazing human, even with or without the White Death Note giving him ideas.

Light had set up an date with his girlfriend, and wrote two death scenarios into his Death Note. And so he went, and that leather-bound woman whose real name was actually Naomi Misora had wound up holding his girlfriend hostage.
Only to accidentally shoot his girlfriend when Shiori was trying to escape. Troubled by what she had done, the woman then shot herself in the head.

Light acted the part of the mourning boyfriend beautifully. And from what he noticed, some of the tears were actually real. Ryku supposed that Light really did like the girl he had been going out with… but was forced to overlook those feelings thanks to the powers of the white death note.

Light then naturally asked to join the team in order to find Kira. And that was when L appeared before him! It was as if the very atmosphere changed around them as they met for the very first time and started measuring each other up. The way they gazed upon each other for the first time seemed to be very passionate in itself which quirked Ryuuku’s curiosity as to how the two really felt when they met for the first time.

Light, on the other hand, wasn’t so nearly amused as Ryuuku. In fact… he was mildly annoyed.

He was SO sure that once he had FINALLY got around to seeing L’s face, that finding out his real name would be a piece of cake. After all, he had gone to the trouble to set up this elaborate plan of killing that blasted woman AND his own girlfriend just to get to meet L.
But it was almost as L exactly knew what to expect and made sure that it would be next to IMPOSSIBLE to even find out his real name. Oh, he was real good… But a part of Light worried that he might be too good. After all, there was a reason why L was supposedly named the world’s greatest detective, right?

But of course, the more confident side of him kicked in. Light was going to be the greatest detective one day! So naturally he could beat and take down L! How could he not? He was one of the top-scoring students in Japan… and it was in his personal opinion that he was THE best student of Japan. He was a crime-solving prodigy too, having helped his father crack open tough cases before he was even barely 12 years old.
And all it would have to take is patience to beat L…After all, it took nearly an whole month for him to finally meet “L”. What was another month to find out his name?

‘Yes…’ that strange voice inside his head laughed, ‘and in the meantime we can see who is the strongest of the two!’

Light mentally sighed. That damned voice inside his head again… He would have to do something about that. It was surely a sign that he was losing his mind. And right now that was the last thing he wanted to deal with. He had too much at stake…

He jerked slightly in surprise when he found L facing towards him, those intense, panda-like eyes staring at him.

L spoke when he noted that he had Light’s attention. “You were sighing. Was not all the information on the case helpful?”

Oh, that mental sigh must had been an outward sigh instead…

Light had been reading up on L’s super-computer on all the data so far as seeing he was still relatively new to the team and needed to be briefed on a lot of things.

“ To be honest, no. ” Light said smoothly, “ To tell you the truth, I was following up on the news before I joined. Anything that had to do with Kira, you see. So I was able to gauge the same guesses and some of the information you have here. I was hoping to find out something new here… but it seems that it’s not the case at all. ”

Light then gave L one of his pseudo-smiles, while adding: ” Of course I look toward to catching Kira with you and finding out more about him.”

L just simply nodded, while continuing to stare ever so relentlessly with those intense eyes of his.
Damn those eyes of his, Light thought. It was almost as if he was becoming devoured whole inch by inch… It just made the back of his neck crawl, and gave him a slightly weird feeling in his stomach that he couldn’t place at all.

He hated that feeling, it made him feel so unlike himself… and so He in turned hated L even more for making him feel so strange.

“ Well, I do have something that may help… But then again, it may not.” L remarked. He then pulled something out of a folder that had been sitting on a table that was overflowing with sweets.
It was a couple of papers, which he held out gingerly with only a couple of his fingers. Light reached out to the papers, and promptly started reading as soon as they were in his hands.

Ah, those were the “ messages ” that he had sent to L while he had been testing out the Death Note that one time.

“ Notice anything interesting? ” L asked, his eyes still on Light. His hands were already roaming all over the table full of sweets, though.

“ Ah, yes… ” Light answered casually in a slightly quiet tone. “ I do notice something at the top… those first letters seems to spell out a message in both those notes. It says, L, do you know that… reapers like apples? “

L quirked an slight smile, one of his thumbs to his mouth. “ to think you would notice so quickly… Yes, I’m glad. I wasn’t sure of the message, but having you confirm it reforces it even more. ”

Light thought to himself: “ Fool. Only if you knew that those messages meant nothing! ”

L then pulled out some more files. “ However… you’re wrong. ”

Light looked at L with surprise. “ what do you mean? You just told me that it reforced your suspicions… ”

L looked apologetic, as he explained the extra files and how it spelled out a message that made no sense at all.

That voice inside Light’s head just started laughing, which added to Light’s irration even more.
God, he HATED that “ voice ” so much…

“Is there something wrong? ” L asked, still staring at Light.

“Well…this is awkward…” Light put on a forced smile on his face, “ But it seems that I’m in a situation where I have to admit that I was wrong after all. But I have to wonder, why were you testing me? ”

“ I apologize, Light-kun. ” L nodded, “ But I just wanted to see how clever you could be in person. Just my way of making sure you would be a valuable asset to the team… After all, your father seems a little uneasy about having you on such a dangerous case. And I do not want people putting their lives at risk if they cannot sufficiently help out. ”

Light closed his eyes for a few seconds, as if to process this. “ I see. That makes sense. ”

He opened his eyes, and gave L an dermined look. “ But trust me when I tell you, that I don’t care about the risks. If I have to put myself at risk…I will do so in order to stop Kira. I’d do anything, even if it meant losing my sanity in the process. If it meant that the world would become a safe place. That I can promise you.”

L’s stare deepened, and he chewed on one of his thumbs. “ I see. I’m glad to have somebody so dedicated on my team then. ”

The white Death note asked for a private audience with Ryku later that night.

“ So what is it that you wanted to talk to me about, Kiraomi?” Ryku asked.

“ I’m worried. ” The book stated simply.

“ why? Everything seems according to plan. With a little time, Light could find out L’s real name and kill him. Then you would have nobody to oppose you in this world. ” Ryku sat down, staring at the death note.

“ It’s not that. It’s more about Light. At first I thought we were a perfect match… ”

“ But…? ” Ryku tilted his head.

“ But it seems that Light’s too headstrong. It took almost all of my strength to convince him to kill his own girlfriend, for hades’ sake! I need to kill twice as much to even make up for all the energy I wasted on controlling him then. And the times when I spoke to him he seemed to have a strong dislike for me then. even though he does not yet know what I am. He simply thinks that it’s just some part of him that’s going insane. ”

“ heh, you’re telling me that he’s too much of a perfect match..? ” Ryku tried to hold back some of his biting witty remarks on that.

“ That’s one way to put it, I suppose. ” The death note muttered. “ I need to find a way for him to discard me so that I can move on to a different body. I need somebody who would do anything I told him to… and yet that person would still need to be clever and somebody who I could tolerate. ”

“ Are you interested in L, then? He sure seems clever… and he’s different than Light in a lot of respects. ” Ryku suggested.

“ I considered that. However… I worry that he might be even more strong-headed than Light is. He opposes me so strongly in public… I might be wasting twice the energy if I took the effort to possess him and make him do what I say. And there is also the issue of whenever this L is truly worthy of sharing one body with me. Light barely fills that Quota, after all.”

Ryku scratched his head, pondering all this. “ So, what are you going to do then. ”

“ I do not know. I’ll think of something, and when the situation presents itself I’ll be sure to take it. But when that day comes, I would like you to do something for me. ”

Ryku scoffed. “ Hey, remember what I told you before. I’m only here for the entertainment. I’m not on your side, much less Light’s and or L’s. So I’m not your servant. It’s not my business if you want to become the god of this world for a while, Kiraomi… or should I just call you Kira now?”

The white death note laughed. “ Jumping to conclusions, aren’t we? All I’m doing is asking you a favor. Plus, if you were to do this as I asked, you’ll gain even more entertainment out of it. And I’ll make it your worth. ”

Ryku nodded. “ Fine. Tell me what it is that you want, and I’ll consider it. ”

“ You know that when a person gives up ownership, they lose their memories. When that happens for Light. I want you to not only erase his memories. I want you to make it so that in the event that he somehow regains those memories by touching me or any other death notes, he will not remember being ‘Kira’. He may remember being a Death Note owner though, but I don’t want him assuming that he’s me, and that he’s acting in my best interests. He might end up destroying everything I’ve been working so hard for. ”

“Can a reaper even alter a human’s memory like that? ” Ryku wondered.

“ Yes, we can. I used to do it often even with other reapers when I was in my old form once. ” The Death note recalled, almost wistfully.

Ryku laughed. “ Wow, I didn’t know that… Alright, I’ll do it. Not for you, but simply because it’d be interesting to see how well Light will do against you… ”

If the White Death note had a mouth, it would be smiling right now. “ Thank you, Ryku. ”

Hey, I told you that it was an Alternate Universe… and that while I was borrowing elements from the Movie, that I wasn’t going to follow any spefic storylines. :p

But it makes things more interesting, right? ;)
