Chapter 5: Mortal Combat
“I’m afraid I can’t allow you three to interfere anymore,” Moka informed the other girls. Her slit-pupiled crimson eyes regarded them coldly. “You’re standing between a vampire and her mate.”
“Are you sure he’s not just your meal?” challenged Kurumu.
“You can’t have Tsukune all to yourself,” asserted Mizore, “you selfish bitch.”
“Can’t we compromise somehow?” pleaded Yukari.
“No! Tsukune is mine!” Moka declared, dropping into a fighting stance. “For the sake of our former friendships, I’ll give you one more chance to stand down before I teach you your places.”
Yukari raised her wand, the filament within glowing. “I don’t want to fight you, Moka – I’d rather join you and Tsukune in a three-way relationship.” The witch blushed fiercely.
Mizore summoned a handful of icy daggers. “I love Tsukune with all my heart. I couldn’t possibly deny my feelings for him.”
Kurumu unfurled her wings and extended her claws. “I can’t live without my Destined One, Tsukune,” she replied firmly.
Moka’s lips twisted into a cruel smirk. “I suppose this was inevitable. Shall we begin?”
Faster than human eyes could have tracked, the girls leapt into action. Yukari created a barrier of whizzing tarot cards around her, a barrier which Moka’s kicks buckled but didn’t break. The witch stared in terror, focusing totally on maintaining her defensive spell.
The vampire spun out of the way of a barrage of icy spikes, some of which shattered against Yukari’s barrier while the rest buried themselves in a nearby tree. Between clusters of razor ice came lightning-fast diving attacks from the now-airborne succubus. The joy of battle pulsed through Moka’s heart with each near-miss.
She let them continue for a few passes – ice projectiles, swooping talons, ice projectiles, swooping talons – admiring the level of coordination between the two to keep her on the defensive with little opportunity to counter. As their attacks missed by narrower and narrower margins, Moka knew she needed to shift the momentum soon. She needed to await the opportune moment.
There.
On Kurumu’s next strafing run, Moka leaned backwards until she was parallel to the ground. The vampire locked eyes with the succubus mere centimeters above her. With a mocking smirk, she struck her foe in the midsection with her knee. Kurumu’s momentum sent her tumbling through the air until she hit the ground, where she rolled to a stop.
Moka somersaulted to her feet, just in time to dodge, narrowly, another hail of ice. The vampire turned to the ice-demon, who’d sheathed her hands in long, heavy blades of ice. Mizore’s swings with those blades hissed through the air, but none of her strikes were fast enough to harm the S-class super-monster.
“When we first met, snow-woman, you said you wanted to die,” Moka reminisced. “Allow me to indulge that desire of yours now.”
After Mizore next missed, Moka struck. A front snap kick shattered the ice blade and the snow-demon’s wrist all at once. A high kick to the other shoulder neutralized that threat next; the broken arm hung uselessly at Mizore’s side. Oddly, the ice-woman remained stoic, even through the pain of broken bones.
Moka spent a second locking gazes with her foe, long enough for the snow-demon to recognize the killing intent in the vampire’s eyes. Mizore’s ice-blue eyes widened just slightly at the realization that Moka’s remark was in deadly earnest. Moka’s next kick, a spinning heel kick, landed on the side of Mizore’s head, just above the ear. Several wet cracks and snaps sounded at the contact, and the ice-demon’s body tumbled bonelessly into a nearby gravestone, her head canted at an awkward angle. Her lollipop rolled to a stop beside her unmoving body.
Behind her, Moka heard Kurumu struggling to her feet. Blood trickled from the buxom girl’s mouth, and her violet eyes flashed in anger. Her lips curled into a snarl as she renewed her assault.
Moka dodged each furious claw swipe from the enraged succubus, though some strayed much closer than she would’ve liked. The vampire surprised her opponent with a pirouette to one side, which left the succubus off-balance enough for a sweep to the back of the knees. Kurumu landed hard on her back with a grunt as the air was driven from her lungs. Moka followed up with a soccer-style kick to the ribs that launched the succubus airborne; she fell face-first (or, more accurately, tits-first) on the ground a few yards away.
The vampire swaggered over to her prone foe and stepped onto her lower back, preventing the succubus from rising to her feet again. “I warned you,” she taunted.
“Fuck off, bitch,” Kurumu spat.
“My, my, what language,” Moka chided mockingly. “I think I’ll make good on my earlier promise: I’m going to rip your wings and tail off. And this time, Tsukune isn’t here to save you.”
“Y-You wouldn’t!” gasped Kurumu, who began to squirm beneath Moka’s foot.
The vampire held her prey fast, however, pinning her hard against the ground. She snatched the dark-purple prehensile tail lashing from beneath Kurumu’s skirt. The appendage wriggled frantically in Moka’s grip. The vampire pulled, eliciting an agonized scream that was music to her ears.
For several moments, the tail was pulled taut, and Kurumu howled. Moka smirked cruelly, admiring the resilience of the lesser monster’s body. With a wet pop and a splatter of blood, the tail came free in the vampire’s hand, where it spasmed wildly for a few seconds before hanging limp. Beneath her, the succubus sobbed.
Pitilessly the vampire gripped the wings near their bases. Moka pulled with her hands and, for better leverage, pushed down with her foot. Kurumu screeched and tried to pull herself free, but to no avail.
Monster energy flared from Moka, her vampire aura darkening the skies. She felt tendons and ligaments tear and give way as she yanked again and again. These wings were powerful in their resistance, and far better-anchored than the tail. Nothing, however, could resist the power of the vampire for long.
Kurumu emitted one final shriek of anguish as her wings tore away from her back in a shower of blood. Moka dropped the wriggling appendages to revel in the gory display. The vampire licked some of the blood from her fingers and sneered at the stricken succubus. “I’ve gone easy on you thus far,” she warned. “If I ever seen you near my Tsukune again, I’ll tear some other things off. Got it, slut?”
Kurumu didn’t answer, unconscious from the pain, shock, and blood loss.
“One more left,” Moka intoned darkly as she turned towards Yukari. The witch stood inside her protective barrier still, her eyes wide with terror at the vampire’s brutality. “If you relinquish any claim to Tsukune, I won’t hurt you,” she promised.
Tears trickled down Yukari’s cheeks. “I’m in love with both of you. Couldn’t we make that work?” she pleaded.
“Not a chance,” replied the vampire. “I won’t share Tsukune, and I’ve no interest in other women.” With a sneer, she added, “I’m not depraved like you are.”
“You’re worse,” Yukari whispered. “You’re a monster, Moka.” With a swallowed whimper, she lowered her wand; the barrier vanished. “But I can’t beat you. You win.”
“A smart decision,” Moka affirmed as she stepped closer. The vampire noted the witch’s eyes roam up and down as she approached. Moka looked down to see herself naked, covered in blood. A glance around showed shreds of clothing scattered about due to all the near-misses from her vanquished foes.
Embarrassed, she covered herself. “Don’t stare!” Moka snapped. “For that, I’ll teach you your place!”
Keeping herself covered, the vampire kicked the wand from the witch’s hand into a nearby tree, against which it shattered. Moka used the momentum of that kick to spiral into a high side kick to Yukari’s chin. The vampire felt the jaw crack and saw several teeth snap loose; the witch’s head snapped back just before she flew into the air. A moment later, she crashed into the ground several yards away.
Lips twisted into an almost feral grin, the vampire surveyed her carnage: one lifeless snow-demon corpse; one maimed and bleeding succubus; and one sure-to-be-disfigured witch. From a nearby branch, Kou crowed, “Today’s brutal showdown took a whopping twenty-seven paragraphs! Flawless victory, whee!” Moka nodded to the bat in appreciation for the acknowledgment.
A quavering voice from behind drew the vampire’s attention from her victory. “M-Moka? What have you done?”
She whirled to see Tsukune staring in horror at the havoc she’d wreaked. Moka smiled. “I had to defend my claim to you. They had to learn their places. I did this for you, Tsukune, so we could be together.”
The human shook his head. “No… you’re just a bloodthirsty monster! You killed one of your friends, and nearly killed the other two!” he shouted. Moka saw the heartbreak written on his face as he spoke. “I’ll never forgive you for this.” With that, he turned and ran.
“Tsukune!” she cried as she felt her own heart break, from the rejection and from the guilt of what she’d done. “Don’t go! Please… I love you!”
Her cries fell on deaf ears, though, and now Moka stood alone – truly, utterly alone.
~~~~~
Moka stumbled into the communal restrooms on her hall and flipped on the lights. Bile, sour and acrid, rose in her throat as the vampire steadied herself beside the sink. Her stomach roiled with the powerful urge to vomit.
Clear as crystal in her mind’s eye, Moka saw the strewn bodies of her friends as she’d left them in her dream – Mizore, Kurumu, and Yukari, all dead, dying, or disfigured due to her cruelty. Tsukune’s horrified face and inability to forgive her for such crimes haunted her waking brain. Even merely dreamt, his rejection left her feeling utterly broken.
Am I really such a monster, she wondered, that I would murder my friends to keep Tsukune for myself?
The queasy sensation subsided but didn’t fully pass. Crimson eyes stared back at her, framed by stray silver strands; but they weren’t the eyes of a ruthless monster. No, she resolved. I’ll win Tsukune without violence. He’d never forgive me if I threatened the others or pummeled them into submission. More importantly, I don’t think I could live with myself if I stooped so low.
A smirk formed on her lips. Fortunately, a vampire has other assets to utilize besides brute force. She remembered fondly how Tsukune had reacted to the sight of her naked body when they visited the love hotel. With that in mind, Moka felt reassured about her plan to apologize to and seduce Tsukune the next day, a plan she’d been pondering all week.
I don’t much care for the thought of just throwing myself at him, she mused. I’m just not sure what else to do, how else to show Tsukune how I feel. Moka sighed. I’m the worst girlfriend ever.
A/N: First, I want to apologize for the late update. I just completely forgot that it was Monday and Monday was update day. I doubt Monday will be update day for any story after this one. O_o
Second, I want to thank my reviewers for their feedback. I've replied to the critiques given on the discussion thread on the forums (link in previous chapter AN), explaining what I think I was going for with the last chapter. This one represents something completely different, and I hope that it captures the idea of horror in a different way (and more effectively this time). As before, please let me know via rating, review, PM or discussion thread post.
