Chapter Five

You know the drill–I don’t own Death Note, Yadda, yadda.

I hope you’re all enjoying the plot that I’m weaving so far. =)

Misa appears, despite the fact that I honestly didn’t want to write about her. But the way I looked at it, no matter how I disliked her she’s still a vital part of the Death Note universe. Ah well.
================================================================

It was a interesting how reapers and humans viewed and experienced time differently. And in the case of a certain Death note that had sentient thought, it experienced time differently too as well.

It experienced events and time in a rather fragmented nature… and the only way it could keep track of events and formulate its’ plans as it waited was though Light.

It got an opportunity sooner than it expected though a human who called herself Misa.

Misa was willing to do anything to meet Kira, inducing killing innocent people who happened to have a vocal opinion against Kira. When she showed herself to Light (and Kira) and clearly stated that she was a loyal servant of Kira…

Well, Kiraomi couldn’t be any more pleased to hear that at the moment. Not only did the death note gain a loyal follower, she was a new candidate in the running for Kiraomi to see who would be worthy as a body host.

However, there was still a problem in the shape of Light. He wasn’t as impressed by Misa as Kiraomi was. In fact, Light was repulsed by the fact that Misa had been way too willing to kill on the scene without even a second thought. Especially when some of those people were policemen who had posed no threat to ‘Kira’ at all. Misa had done all that on some chance that she could meet Kira who she adored so much. In Light’s world, a person worthy of respect did not do such things.

Kiraomi had to do a lot of talking and using up some of his energy just to convince Light that Misa was a good ally, no matter how distasteful some of her actions had been. Kiraomi had also used Light’s guilt as a effective means of controlling him in that critical moment. Kiraomi acted as Light’s conscience, pointing out that Light was ‘tainted’ too, in that he had killed people who weren’t felons as well.

Kiraomi couldn’t wait for the day when he could finally leave the young prodigy, and thankfully he didn’t have to wait long. Misa was actually captured by L quickly, which actually impressed both Light and Kiraomi.

And Rem, the reaper who had allied herself with Misa, actually helped Kiraomi without even realizing it. Rem was very upset that Misa had been captured, and that Light seemed unwilling to help her.

So Rem appeared at Light’s side and threatened to kill him if he didn’t do anything to help Misa at all. Elated, Kiraomi quickly grabbed this chance…
–––––––––

Light just realized in this moment that the “annoying voice in his head ” might just be his conscience.

It was doing a very effective job of taking him on a guilt trip, after all. The voice was outlining everything that he ever did wrong in his life… telling him every ‘truth’ that he didn’t want to hear or wanted to admit to himself.

It told him that he was not a god, just some delusional human being who was trying to prove to himself that he didn’t do anything wrong by killing. The voice replayed the moment when he had killed for the first time and the second time all too vividly.

He recalled how he had felt back then.
~~
He had been stumbling down an alleyway, feeling seriously ill. The phrase “ It’s for real, and I killed somebody! ” kept on playing in his head over and over.
He had felt scared, because he had never thought such a thing could had existed in this world. It just didn’t seem rational to a mind which was raised by science, after all. The only comforting thought he had at the time was that he at least hadn’t jokingly used the name of somebody close to him. He wouldn’t had been able to live with himself if he had accidentally killed somebody close to him. He had killed, yes… which could never be erased. But at least it was a couple of criminals, and ones who had long records of reoffending. By only killing people like them, he had at least ensured that they wouldn’t be able to hurt anybody again. That was the only good that had came out of his mishap.
It was such a cold comfort, though, considering that he was training to become a law enforcement officer. And now that he had done this act, the idea of him becoming a law officer almost seemed like a total joke. He had not only taken the law into his own hands, but he broke the law too.
~~~
He felt the bile rise in his throat, and he ran for the nearest thing which could hold his vomit as he threw up.
Light found himself throwing up in his garbage can by his desk. He wiped his mouth with some tissue out of his pocket, and threw it into the can.
He went to lie down on his bed, recalling how he had started to cope with that unpleasant day.
Light was a proud boy, used to the notion that he could do no wrong. His whole life, he often heard that he was every parent’s dream.
He always listened to his elders, he always studied hard and most of all, he was tidy without his parents even having to tell him to do anything. Because of this, He was used to hearing so much praise from everyone. He couldn’t help but feel a little smug every time he overheard the neighboring children’s parents telling them to be more like him.
And he had been raised with society’s guidelines on what made a person “ good ” and “ bad ”. And the more he grew older, those guidelines became more enforced with his parents making sure to point out what was wrong and what was right. According to the moral guideline, he was referred to as a “ good boy ”.
He always loved being referred to as a good person… It was the highest praise anybody could get in life. So it was quite a shock to realize that he had done something that only a immoral person could do. This meant that he was no longer perfect, but nothing more than a common criminal. It was more than his psyche could stand.
At the time, He had considered all sorts of crazy scenarios on how he could “ make up ” for what he had done… anything to make himself a “ good person ” again. Anything to regain his positive self-image. There was even a split second where he had considered some form of suicide, but his pride had stopped him from it. Because according to his pride and his logic, suicide was for the weak. And he wasn’t weak.
His pride. It was because of his pride that he decided that he wasn’t a bad person. After all, he didn’t kill anybody who was innocent, did he? He had only killed a couple of bad people and that was it. He was actually doing something good, so therefore he was good. And most importantly, Nobody else knew that he had done such things… So it wasn’t like his image had been destroyed. So his pride convinced him in a way that he wasn’t a lowly criminal. After all, how could the top ranked student of Japan be a mere lowly criminal?
Well, that might had been true in the start. But now that logic which had justified what he had done, seemed like a farce. Especially now that he had killed people who weren’t felons. And not just any people neither… one of the people had been a person who he had actually liked very much. Shiori…while he wasn’t sure if he had truly loved her, she had been one of the few people whose company he enjoyed.
Light sat up, looking at his own death note. He opened it to read the rules once again. His eyes roamed over the rules in the back of the death note.
Unknown to him, those were the false rules which Ryku had written in due to Kiraomi’s request… before Light had became the owner of the Death note.
“ If the owner of a Death Note does not use the notebook after 13 days time, he/she will die. ”
“ If the Death Note is burned, torn up, or otherwise rendered useless, any people who have touched the Death Note will die.”
Light smiled bitterly. He thought out loud:“ Why didn’t I destroy it back then? Then I could had died on my own terms without taking it this far. Oh, yes… that’s right. I couldn’t think straight, I was in shock. My self-preservation was too strong… So I just kept on using the Death note…”
He stood up. In a way, his eyes had been opened for the very first time. There was no use lying to himself anymore. He realized it now… there was a way to die on his own terms.
He still had too much pride to fully admit that he was Kira in public and that he had done a lot of wrong. Plus, he had his family to think about. They would be ruined for life if it ever went public that their son was the one who had done all those killings as Kira. And he couldn’t just simply kill himself by normal means… people would talk. And again, it would hurt his family.
There was only one way… to use somebody who he was sure could get caught by L but at the same time make a convincing Kira. And then…… Yes. The perfect plan. He would die on his own terms, still save face for his own family. Rem would not be the one to kill him. And even if this plan would free Misa, she would still be a prime suspect anyway. It would change nothing, expect the fact that he would go peacefully, and his family would think that he had simply died fighting in the name of Justice.
~-_-_-_-_-_-_-~
L couldn’t believe it. The turn of events were so unexpected that he didn’t know what to make of it.
Was this some kind of tactic by Kira to confuse him? Why would Light just come out and practically admit that he was Kira?
In a way, he honestly didn’t want Light to be Kira at all. He had come to admire the younger man… in more than one way.
Light was the only one person who L could actually have a interesting, intelligent conversation with on equal terms. He liked having somebody else who would challenge and simulate him. L was 98% sure that Light felt the same way too.
Yes, he had Watari, but the elderly man was more of a… well, a grandfatherly Assistant person. He was much more important than that to him, actually. But still, the elderly gentleman just didn’t quite provide the same level of simulating chats that Light was able to give him.
But of course L was a realist, and he had to look at the facts… no matter how much he didn’t want the facts to be true.
Raye Penber had died three days after following Light around, and Naomi Misora had linked Light with the death of not only Raye Penber, but the other agents from America too.
On top of it… There was Misa. Misa was known for her vocal support of Kira, and he had plenty of evidence that she was the second Kira. She had met up with Light somehow, and was suddenly his girlfriend all of a sudden.
When you looked at it like that, Light was the main suspect no matter how much he didn’t want it to be.
But what if there was some truth to what Light said? The fact that Light said that he might not be aware of his own actions. He knew by now that it was a possibility that Kira could control others’ actions.
Why would Light be invegesting Kira on his own before he joined the team, if He was Kira? Maybe that time when he was watching the Yagami Household, Light had been aware of that and pretended to be invegesting Kira on his own… But if that was true, then L was not only dealing with a Mastermind, but a person who was a very good actor as well.
Which would make it all the more difficult to convince the others of the fact that Light was possibly Kira.
And to make it worse, he had been so sure that Light was plotting to use this situation to clear his name by somehow killing the criminals out there. Yet.. It was the fourth day of confinement for Light, and there was no sign of any Deaths at all.
Which meant that Light might be right, that he was Kira.
L was 100% sure that he didn’t like this situation at all. This was way too easy… something was wrong here.
–––––––––-
Rem appeared next to Ryku soon as he took a break from being around Light in the prisoner cell. Rem asked: “ Before I go though with Light’s plan, There’s something I need to ask you. ”
“ What is it? ” Ryku turned to look at Rem.
“Surely you must have noticed. There seems to be something wrong with Light. I can detect negative energy coming from him… a type of energy that is not typical of humans. ” Rem replied.
“ Heheh… so you noticed, after all. ” Ryku chuckled. He then told Rem the whole truth, starting with how a friend of him had discovered the white death note and given it to him. And how the White Death Note had a very interesting plan to regain the body of a reaper.
“ I see. So that was why he was acting so strangely. ” Rem said as she pondered over the information. She then made an bitter expression. “ But far as he goes, Light is still just a human. And as such, I do not trust him at all. Are you certain that he will do as he claims, Ryku?”
Ryku tilted his head, as to study Rem. “ You know, you’re the strange one here. You seem to have such a strong dislike for humans, yet you seem so concerned for that female human. Why do you care whenever she lives or dies? ”
Rem growled. She then leaned towards Rem. “ You really want to know? ”
Ryku wasn’t intimated at all, and just simply nodded.
“ It’s because she reminds me of myself when I used to be human. ” Rem answered simply.
Ryku was completely floored. “ W…What? You mean to tell me that you actually remember your past life? ”
Rem couldn’t help but smirk for a second before reverting to her usual serious self. “ There’s a reason why they disallow reapers to stay in this world for too long if they did not drop a death note. They also frown upon reapers watching humans for too long from the windows of our world for this same reason. Sometimes doing simple things like eating something from this world, can trigger old memories from our past lives. Eating doesn’t have to trigger it, Sometimes it can be something simple as watching a human from afar. And even if it doesn’t happen, it can also cause us to get too attracted to humans…”
Ryku blinked. “ Wow. I didn’t know that… ” He then grinned.
“ So what were you like as a human? Were you cute like Misa? ”
Rem just rolled her eyes, scoffing at Ryku’s stupidity. “ I better go now to find the perfect human to carry out Kira’s plan… ” She muttered as she got ready to take off.
With that, she flew off. Ryku just shrugged and floated back inside into the prisoner cell.
“ So what were you like as a human? ” Ryku’s words echoed in her head. Rem scowled. To tell herself the truth, she honestly wished that she never remembered her past life at all.
~~~~
Her life as a human had been miserable. In the start, she was a very beautiful woman. Her full name was Aremlle Victoria Quincy, but everyone called her Rem or Vicky for short. She was tall and the best track runner in high school. For a while, She tried so hard to be happy, despite the fact that her parents seemed to love picking apart everything she ever did and finding some fault she had done.
But then she became truly happy when she had a boyfriend for the first time. Thanks to her high school sweetheart, her self-esteem had risen and there was nothing that her parents could had said to cut it in half.
And as time moved on, She graduated from High school and moved in with her boyfriend. And that’s when her happiness had came to a end.
Her boyfriend changed once she had moved in with him. He became verbally abusive just like her parents. And on top of it he had became an drunkard and refused to take a job. So it was left up to her to take a job to support the two of them. She was forced to work at a strip club just so that she could support his expensive “ hobby ” of drinking. She had dyed her hair white with blue streaks at a salon one day just for the hell of it, and that was when she had stumbled across a black death note.
She had thought it to be some kind of joke at first, so she had written down the names of her parents as her way of saying: “ if you had been more nicer to me, then maybe I wouldn’t be writing your names down as a sick joke! It’s your damn fault you brought me into this miserable world. ”
~~~~
Rem smirked at the memory. Boy, she had been so surprised when it actually came true…And even more when a reaper actually appeared before her. But The appearance of that reaper had been the only good thing in her life.
~~~
For that reaper, who had called himself Rale, was the only true friend she could confide in at that time. Especially when things got really bad for her…

Her boyfriend had became worse with his verbal abuse. He had threatened to leave her for women who was far more attractive and thinner than her every time she didn’t comply with his wishes.
So as an result, she started starving herself intentionally in an attempt to keep him. She even did that famous “finger in throat” technique as a means of losing weight quickly.
It got to the point where her body literally didn’t have any fat tissue on her body left. Her breasts had shrunk, and eventually disappeared into her chest as the fatty tissue there was being cannibalized in an attempt to keep her body alive. And as for the rest of her body she was basically a living skeleton at that point. You could see the shapes of the bones poking out sharply against her flesh.

Rale had told her that maybe it wasn’t such a good thing for her to be doing such things. He had developed a sort of sympathy for her, and told her about the “ ritual ” that would turn her into a reaper once she died. So she had bonded herself to the reaper, and it was just in time too…

For when her boyfriend had found out about the “ ritual ” and the death note… he had thought she was crazy. So they had an big fight, and her boyfriend had hit her for the first time. Her left eye swelled so badly that she actually had to cover it up with an bandage. Enraged by what he had done, she wrote down his name in the death note.
At that point, she was sick and tired of being human. In fact, she hated everything about humanity at this point. She lived such a shit life, and it got to the point where she was actually resorting to killing everyone she cared about just to make her own life bearable. She decided that it wasn’t just worth it, and begged for Rale to kill her. As much as Rale liked her, he decided that killing her might be for the best. It was like a mercy killing, after all.
~~~~~~~~~~
Rem’s chest swelled when she thought of Rale. She and Rale was still the best of friends, and she was glad that Rale had been the one she bonded with, and also happy that he had been the one who killed her past self. She was so much happier being an Reaper and she was truly grateful to Rale.
She would had made the same offer to Misa, but she wasn’t sure if Misa would be happier being an reaper like her.
After all, Misa led a life so much different than the one she had as an human. Misa actually had loved her family, and suffered hardships when she lost them. And she was a beautiful model, so she was adored by many all over Japan. She was so adorable and childlike, in Rem’s opinion. She definitely wasn’t the type who was suited to be a reaper, that was for sure.
So all Rem wanted was for her to be happy, and to end up with a nice boyfriend who would take care of her forever. She would never forgive anybody who would dare to make Misa suffer in the same way she had.
So she would find some lowly human, and allow him to use her death note… all for Misa’s sake!
===========================================
So what did you think of Rem’s past as a human? I always thought it was interesting how Rem seemed to have such a strong dislike for most humans than most “reapers”. So I thought I’d write something that explained why…
And I know you’re probably going to all get on my case for making Light “ suicidal ”. However I must point out that Light’s not actually suicidal, he’s just not himself thanks to “ Kira ”. This is a plot about a evil, mind controlling Death Note after all. :)
Anyway, I hope you’re still enjoying this story… Review as always, of course. :)
