SMACK!
"So…we treat witches like kishin-souls?" Rowan spoke winded as she knocked away Stein's kick.
"No." Stein corrected himself throwing a fist at his weapon's face. "Witches are very powerful, but collecting kishin-souls before they go completely—" she dodged his fist and attempted an uppercut, interrupting him, he backed away a few steps. "—insane…is a much bigger priority. That's why this school was made!" he yelled going on the offensive again.
Rowan crouched down, thwarting his strikes like a wild animal, "Do witches normally—urgh! Normally build a rebellion under your noses like this?" she landed a playful slap on Stein's face and giggled, dodging him again.
He laughed aloud in return, not letting up on his advancing. "No. Not for six years now—" he ducked, barely avoiding Rowan's combat boot.
"Do you and your friend do this a lot?" she panted, her time in the hospital left her lagging behind in her training.
"Spirit?" he landed a fist into her side, but made sure not to hurt her.
"Y-yeah!" she replied; he knocked the wind out of her.
"Not really!" he laughed as his memory went reeling, "He always had a hangover around this time of day! The experiments probably didn't help that disposition either!"
Rowan gawked as her gloved forearm blocked Stein's hand from slamming against her temple—she dove under and between his legs, coming up behind with an elbow aimed at his lumbar region. Swiftly, he pivoted and caught her elbow in his hands, shoving her away. Looking on the two sparring from the other side of the huge gym were Soul and Maka, her casted leg propped on a weight lifting bench. There were several other agent pairs occupying the area and getting in quick warm-ups before the raiding teams began their formations.
"I wish I could help." Maka moped.
Soul's made a face, "Tch! Don't be stupid. You've be doing nothing but look for him, you're gonna kill yourself if you keep it up."
"They're…" Maka started, but was afraid of Soul's response.
"Hm?" He looked down at her, curious.
She hesitated, glancing at his fiery-red eyes through the thin wisp of an ash-blonde pigtail. Lip trembling a bit she finally finished, "They're going to bring him home, right?"
Soul's eyes winced a bit at the quiet despair in his love's voice, "Of course." He stated with confidence. "Parker said she can see his trail clear as day, there's no way she can lose it. They're gonna come back with your creepy Dad. It's cool."
Maka smiled and the two went back to watching their teacher spar with his new partner. Stein was punching into Rowan's open palms, then put a hand on her waist—it was their signal—and she immediately transformed as he swung her around. Maka and Soul watched the flurrying speed that the scientist was whipping around his weapon, when he finally slowed and began practicing maneuvers. The two on-lookers took the opportunity to get a better look at the weapon.
"She's a glaive…but bladed on both ends?" Maka ogled at the unique sight.
"Yeah," Soul added, "Looks like her staff's made out of bone and metal instead of wood. Very cool." He smirked.
Stein took the opportunity of getting a better handle on Rowan to talk privately inside, as he noticed their audience some distance away.
"What's the plan for the baby?" he questioned.
Rowan shot a stunned look, "What baby?"
"Don't act stupid, you know what I said." He spoke aloud calmly, knowing no one knew what they spoke of.
"I'm not pregnant." She muttered flatly.
"That's a bold statement." His annoyance began to rise as he continued to spin her so fast, no one could see the staff and barely the blades.
"Because I'm right. I'm sterile, Stein."
The disappointment in her words seemed invisible, but the professor picked-up on it in her wavelengths. He stopped wielding her and paused for a minute to reevaluate the situation. He wasn't put-off by the new data and he knew she could tell. He leaned against her slightly, sensing as though he'd struck a nerve, though he could gather that she wasn't offended in the least.
"I'm sorry." He whispered against her staff.
"No need. It's not like you did anything wrong." She smiled.
Through his new glasses, he looked over to where Maka sat, her partner steadfast and standing close to her, stroking the back of her neck. Stein sighed heavily at the memory of how Marie used to do that. Spirit's soul—from what he could tell—was on the line today. The witch put a camoflauge over his wavelength so no one could find him; Rowan was the only one who could find Maka's father now.
"Rowan…" he lulled.
"Yes?"
Stein smiled at Maka, sending a look of puzzlement about her green eyes. "Shall we go and make our young lady happy again?"
Without a second of thought she answered, "Of course."
With a slight nod, as if to let Maka know they would succeed, Stein lifted his weapon against his shoulder a headed out the gym exit, grabbing his lab coat on the way out.
~*~
A little over four hundred agents were called in to eradicate the new insurgency of this witch's army and most by now, if not all, were assembled on the Mojave's edge just outside of Death City. Sid and Mira, Marie, Tsar, Azusa, and their respective meisters had already stationed a company of ninety agents for each of their four commands; from what Stein had heard, Tsar brought Black„Star and Tsubaki back with him on his way through Siberia, claiming that he wanted the loud, would-be assassin as second-in-command of his company. Much to Stein's amusement, when he'd introduced Rowan to the two hell-raisers, she commented that if either one of the men blew their cover she'd have to rip out a larynx or two.
Speed walking slightly, the professor reached the doors leading out of the school, Rowan—still as a glaive—in tow. From the scorching sunlight outside of the open doors, he watched a familiar figure running frantically, looking lost.
"Oh!" Marie jumped in the middle of her mad dash, laying eyes on her former flame.
"Hello, Marie." Stein stopped just beside her.
The two stood for a moment in an awkward silence as Marie stared at the glaive propped on Stein's shoulder.
She refocused quickly, "Um…do you know which way to the Quarter Moon Classroom?" laughing nervously.
Stein looked at her blush for a moment before answering with a kind smile. "It's your third right down this hall. After you get up the staircase take a left. You can't miss it."
Her blush grew, "Th-thanks, Franken." She ran off in a tizzy. She was still in love with him.
He stood, Rowan broke the silence. "What happened?"
"She was my partner…" he spoke quietly, pulling a cigarette out from the pack in his lab coat. "…she proposed to me. I said 'No.'" he lit the cigarette and took a long drag.
Rowan only made a sound of understanding.
Without hesitation, Stein quickened his pace out into the glaring Nevada morning, seeing his platoon of DWMA's elite already waiting in the cobble-stone courtyard before him. He'd already debriefed them when they arrived before dawn. While Sid's company cut-off the insurgents at the Arizona border; Azusa, Marie, and Tsar would box them in while his platoon fought through to find Spirit and the witch. He scanned around, recognizing all fifty of his comrades…except one.
His thought was interrupted by an urgent Rowan, "Stein! The witch just took off with the Death Scythe, they've left the group and heading North!"
"I know why too." He spoke inwardly at her.
"A scout maybe?" She pressed.
"That man by the stairs. He's not an agent. Go take care of that, if you would."
"Gladly." She scowled.
"Alright! LISTEN UP!" Stein bellowed out as he tossed Rowan into the air.
She transformed, landed, and started strolling passed the agents as if nothing was amiss, closing in on the spy.
"WE ARE THE ELITE OF DWMA! There is nothing that can shake us, no matter how drastic! And now that asset is our best ally!"
Stein continued as she walked casually forward, one of her hands quietly morphing into her glaive blade. Five steps.
"Plans have changed!" he yelled.
Rowan lunged. In one stroke off her hand, half of the spy's head tumbled down the steps.
The scientist's eyes burned hot with bloodlust as he gave the final order, "OUR COVER'S BEEN BLOWN AND THE WITCH IS MOVING NORTH WITH DEATH SCYTHE! THAT'S OUR DETOUR, NOW MOVE OUT!"
