Chapter 6: When One Becomes Two
Guided by Moka’s slim fingers, the brush glided through her long, bubblegum-pink tresses as the young woman prepared for bed. The vampire frowned at her reflection in the vanity mirror. “Five more weeks,” she groused to herself. “If I didn’t love you so much, Tsukune, I wouldn’t put up with this.”
Moka sighed. Everything about this situation is horribly wrong, she complained silently. Boys aren’t supposed to have five girlfriends!
The vampire froze in mid-brush-stroke. Or even two, for that matter, she realized. Won’t Tsukune have to choose between me and that other Moka, eventually? She hates sharing him as much as I do!
Moka tugged at a tangle in her locks. “Why did you have to fall in love with him too?” she grumbled as she worked the hairbrush. “What if we get… separated somehow? Will we still tolerate sharing our beloved, or will we fight over him like the others? Won’t that push Tsukune away from us?”
With a few more strokes, the vampire finished. “Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that,” she told the rosary dangling from her neck as she slipped into her bed.
~~~~~
Tsukune approached Moka as they collected their mail from their on-campus mailboxes. As usual, his sat empty while hers overflowed with letters from her “fans” among the freshman class. Moka sighed at the seemingly-endless stack of envelopes, wondering (not for the first time) how she would respond to them all while remaining atop her homework and Newspaper Club responsibilities.
“Good afternoon, Moka,” Tsukune greeted her with a partial bow.
Moka glanced at the young man, startled by his formal, too-polite tone. “Good afternoon, Tsukune,” she replied in kind. “What’s with that tone of voice?”
The young man scratched the back of his head – his usual tic that showed nervousness. “I… I’m not quite sure how to tell you this,” he deflected.
Moka rolled her seafoam eyes. “C’mon, Tsukune, you can tell me anything,” she urged. She reached out to him, but he shied away.
“I… I’ve come to a decision… finally,” he announced, discomfort clear on his features.
“About what?” prompted Moka, her pulse accelerating with the exhilaration of soon-to-be-fulfilled hope.
“I’ve figured out who I love most,” Tsukune declared resolutely, stepping closer to the vampire.
Moka beamed and rushed to embrace the human boy. “Oh, Tsukune! I never doubted you!” She then gasped when she felt his hand on her bosom. “Shame on you,” she murmured playfully in his ear. “Not here! Someone could see us…”
A metallic click pierced the silence of the mailroom. Moka stepped back, eyes wide with disbelief. She saw, though, the silver crucifix in Tsukune’s hand, confirming what she’d heard: Tsukune had removed the rosary. She squeaked his name as her consciousness drained out of her body and into the insubstantial realm of the mystical seal.
From inside the gem at the rosary’s center, Moka found she could look out onto the world now denied her, everything shaded crimson as if through a fierce red lens. She pounded fruitlessly against the unyielding wall separating her from the world outside. Her cries and sobs dissipated into the ether as soon as she voiced them, but she could clearly hear and see the other Moka reaping the fruits of Tsukune’s choice.
The silver-haired vampire smirked in triumph. “Excellent choice, Tsukune. I applaud your decision.”
The young man took inner Moka into his arms and kissed her fiercely, and the vampire responded likewise. After an ecstasy of fumbling, inner Moka finally unfastened Tsukune’s belt and trousers, while the young man had managed to slip her panties down to her ankles. Outer Moka could only watch in shock as her other persona leaned against the nearest wall and hike up her skirt invitingly. A wanton moan wafted through the air as Tsukune entered her wet, welcoming warmth.
While they brazenly coupled in such a public place, the gentle persona wept inside her magical prison. She slumped against the scarlet barrier, the bitter taste of betrayal on her tongue. Deep down, she knew that, once they’d finished, the other Moka would secrete the rosary, her former prison, somewhere out of sight and out of mind, leaving the pink-haired girl trapped inside, alone, for all eternity. Or, perhaps, until Tsukune was gone forever – inner Moka would put it back on to lock herself away and leave outer Moka to do the hard work of living while grieving.
Either way, Tsukune had finally chosen. It wasn’t his fault if the pink-haired Moka didn’t like the result.
~~~~~
In her bed, Moka whimpered while yet asleep. Fresh tears painted her cheeks and fell onto her pillow. Their tracks glistened on her face under the faint light of the moon streaming through the window. The young woman tossed as the dream ran its course and her sleep cycle began anew.
~~~~~
On the school’s rooftop, Moka and Tsukune leaned on the balcony and gazed over the campus below, all the way out to the horizon. Their hands clasped, hers atop his, fingers interlaced. A beatific smile rested on the vampire’s lips as she rested her head on her beloved’s shoulder.
“I thought I might find the two of you here,” came the cold, stern voice of the other Moka from behind them, shattering the moment. The two teens turned to face the silver-haired vampire, who folded her arms across her generous bosom impatiently. “I think I’ve given you sufficient time together. It’s time to make a decision, Tsukune.”
The pink-haired Moka’s brow furrowed. “What are you…? How are you…?” She clutched at her rosary, but came away empty-handed.
The silver-haired Moka chuckled. “I’m still getting used to it myself,” she admitted. “That’s why I’ve given you both some space. But now… Tsukune needs to choose one of us to be his girlfriend.”
“Wh-What about the others?” asked the gentle persona.
Tsukune sighed. “I had to break their hearts.”
“Just one more to break,” the warrior persona prompted him. “Mine, or hers?”
“Promise you won’t hurt either of us if he chooses me,” demanded the pink-haired young woman.
The silver-haired vampire smirked in response. “Of course I won’t. You’re more of a sister to me than my actual sister.” She glanced at Tsukune before returning to her former other personality. “By the same token, you must promise to accept Tsukune’s decision about his feelings for one of us. No pouting.”
The vampire formerly known as “outer Moka” nodded firmly. “Even if he chooses you… I’ll support him, because my love for Tsukune won’t change!” she declared.
“Nor mine,” replied the formerly-inner Moka. “Please, Tsukune, don’t make us wait any longer. Choose.”
The gentle persona turned to the human, her seafoam-green eyes sparkling with hope. “Which Moka do you want, Tsukune?”
The young man turned to each girl, petrified by his usual indecision. “I… I can’t choose!” he cried. “I love you both!”
The stern persona rolled her eyes. “We can’t share anymore, Tsukune. It’s inappropriate now that we’re separate. Think of us like fraternal twins.”
Green eyes widened. “Twins?” pink-haired Moka echoed distantly. “That… That’s not… That can’t be…”
The whole world around her seemed to shift, to shatter and dissolve into a swirl of chaotic images: her father standing above her; coughed-up blood splattering her hands; the silver-haired Moka, child-sized, staring at her impassively; her own face, but a bit older and sadder, smiling at her. Each image flashed by in an instant, but they all struck her as hauntingly familiar. The images coalesced into a hypnotic pattern like that of the barrier surrounding Yokai Academy and separating it from the human world.
~~~~~
Disoriented, Moka sat up in bed and rubbed her temples. “What was that all about?” the young woman groaned as a dull ache permeated her skull.
Moka arose from her bed and stumbled towards the door, intent on a glass of juice from one of the vending machines. She stopped short, though, when she saw her reflection in the vanity. Bathed in the pale moonlight, the vampire could just see the contours of her face; but she didn’t recognize the face as her own – at least, not entirely.
“Who am I?” she murmured.
On her breastbone, the rosary jewel began to glow, harsh scarlet in the near-darkness. < I saw all that too, > the inner voice told her. < I don’t know what it’s about, but there’s one person nearby who might. >
“Kokoa,” breathed outer Moka. “We need to talk to her.”
< At least tomorrow’s Saturday, > inner Moka pointed out. < With only a half-day of classes, we can talk to her in the afternoon. > After a pause, she added, < You should probably ask Tsukune to pull off the rosary so I can talk to her. >
“That’s a good idea. I don’t think Kokoa would answer me,” outer Moka admitted glumly.
With that plan created, she ambled out to one of the vending machines for a can of ice-cold orange juice – not her preferred tomato, which the machine was out of. Her head still spun slightly, but she managed the trip there and back. Eventually, the young woman was able to calm herself enough to fall asleep again.
~~~~~
Unfortunately, before Moka could enact her plan the next day, pandemonium broke loose on the campus of Yokai Academy. The students and faculty lost control of their transformations and rampaged mindlessly, thanks (as they learned later) to the effects of Lilith’s Mirror. An ancient and powerful artifact, the mirror laid bare the true natures of all who looked into it.
One by one, the members of the Newspaper Club fell victim to the mirror’s power. Kurumu reverted to her lusty, over-sexed, pre-Tsukune personality, shedding her sweater, blouse, and bra while losing her ability to hide her wings and tail. Mizore became obsessed with freezing Tsukune and returning with him to her village to “make lots of babies for the survival of the ice-demon species.” Yukari’s body shifted back to its prepubescent state, leaving her a blubbering mess as she bemoaned the loss of her “smoking-hot body.” Ruby transitioned from a responsible young woman into a spineless wreck, practically begging Tsukune to tell her what to do. Overwhelmed, the young man tried his best to manage the situation; but he was clearly over-matched, leaving Moka to fend for herself.
The vampire frowned to herself as she ran towards the sounds of a vaguely-familiar feminine scream. How am I supposed to do anything? Moka wondered. Especially with the other me still sealed away. I love you, Tsukune, but you can be such an idiot sometimes!
What she found shocked her – Ms. Ririko was closing in on a girl who looked a lot like Tsukune. Dimly the vampire recalled meeting her – Kyoko, Tsukune’s older-sister-like cousin who’d interviewed, or interrogated, everyone to vet their worthiness to be his girlfriend – as she shoved Ms. Ririko away. Nonetheless, Kyoko continued to cower, crying about her distrust of monsters and her intentions to protect Tsukune by taking him home.
Aloud, Moka responded with something about her trust in Tsukune; even if it had been shaken by the boy’s indecision, her faith in his good heart remained strong. Regardless, she also swore to herself – to both of her selves – I won’t let anyone take Tsukune away from me – not the teachers, not those other girls, and certainly not you!
< For now, though, you need to extract Kyoko and the two of us before Ms. Ririko stops jabbering and actually attacks, > urged inner Moka. < You might also want to find Tsukune so I can save the day… again. >
Outer Moka spotted Lilith’s Mirror, and inspiration struck. She convinced Kyoko to take a leap of faith with her. While the human girl knocked the spirit away from its mirror, Moka looked into the glass surface. A greenish glow bathed her body; when it subsided, the silver haired S-class super-monster stood in her place.
“My other self used the mirror to draw me out,” the vampire remarked to herself. “With Tsukune nowhere to be seen, that’s a clever move. I suppose she’s not to be underestimated.”
With swift, furious kicks, Moka went to work, dispatching Ms. Ririko and the horde of students she’d whipped into submission. While the vampire was thus occupied, the spirit of the mirror recovered and retrieved the artifact. By the time Moka could face the cause of the day’s disturbance, the treacherous sprite had gazed into her own mirror to unleash her full power.
“Now,” snarled the diminutive fairy, “let’s find out your true nature!” With that, the mirror glowed with its fell light once more, a glow which washed over the vampire entirely. Moka shielded her eyes, hoping to mitigate the effect.
When she lowered her arm, however, the vampire saw the absolute last thing she ever expected to see: herself. More accurately, the pink-haired Moka now stood beside the silver-haired one, both of them visible, fully-formed and fully-clothed, in the real world. The two Mokas made eye contact, seafoam and crimson, both surprised and more than a little confused.
“How interesting!” crowed the mirror’s spirit. “Two true natures!”
Silver-haired Moka inclined her head in acknowledgment. “I suppose it’s nice to truly meet you face-to-face,” she told her counterpart.
“I… I don’t understand,” replied the other, who crumpled to the ground.
“Shall we begin?” taunted the spirit of the mirror.
The warrior Moka started to close the distance, but she could immediately tell that something was amiss. Her body felt heavy and unresponsive. Each step felt as if she were trudging through thick mud. A flash of energy from the mirror pushed her back. “How could such a weak attack stop me?” she grumbled to herself.
The spirit laughed, apparently having heard her. “Simple, moron! By splitting you into your two selves, I’ve halved your monster energy. Even a mighty vampire becomes a pushover with only half her strength.”
The pink-haired Moka gasped. “Maybe we can recombine our bodies to restore your strength,” she suggested, but the mirror’s magic light held her fast.
“I don’t… want that,” replied the other Moka. “You said you trusted Tsukune; that’s all well and good, but you’re not strong enough to protect him.”
“Right now, neither are you!” countered the gentler persona. “We need to work together to win this one. We need each other!” Maybe we’ll always need each other…
The mirror flashed and blasted the two girls backward and down to the ground. The two vampires slowly picked themselves up from where they’d fallen. Inner Moka looked at her counterpart and hesitated. “I don’t think I can stand relying on you and Tsukune to release me for much longer,” she groused. “If nothing else, we need to find a new… arrangement… as far as that’s concerned.”
Outer Moka frowned, but she nodded and reached out her hand for her counterpart, that other self she seemed stuck with…
… only for Tsukune and the others to come to their rescue instead. With Kyoko’s assistance, they blindfolded themselves and blasted the spirit away from the mirror. To the warrior Moka’s deep dismay, they even stole her line about “learning her place.”
As the group began to recover from the day’s events, the two Mokas stared at the mirror, now safely in Ruby’s hands. “Is it a good idea to return to the status quo?” asked the silver-haired vampire. “Maybe this would change… other things as well.”
“We can’t protect Tsukune if we stay separated like this. You saw that yourself,” the pink-haired girl reminded her counterpart, her voice soft and gently pensive. “We’ll find another way, I promise.”
The reflective moment was shattered by the elated shout of “Big Sis!” uttered by Kokoa as the redheaded vampire wrapped the silver-haired Moka into a near-suffocating hug. “My plan worked! The mirror brought out the real you!”
Ruby glared. “So, you’re the one responsible for all this? The Headmaster will want words with you, young lady.” The witch raised her staff and bound the young vampire in magical bands resembling ravens’ wings.
“Me and my big mouth,” grumbled the young vampire.
At that moment, the ground shook beneath them. The sky split open, creating a portal into the human world, a portal wreathed in sizzling energy. Cries of shock and fear arose all over campus.
“Wh-What’s going on?!” yelped Kyoko, once more in a full-blown panic at the idea of monsters from this school escaping into the human world and rampaging through her hometown.
“The Great Barrier’s breaking down!” cried the pink-haired Moka.
Ruby looked at the sky in terror. “N-No way! It can’t be! I reinforced it myself, not an hour ago!”
Yukari’s eyes widened. “It must have been the sudden rush of all the students’ and teachers’ monster energy!”
Inner Moka covered her mouth and shook her head. “What if the barrier had been weakened… by releasing me more than necessary over the past few months?”
Tsukune glanced at her, terrified at the ramifications of that suggestion. “No way, Moka! It was all from the effects of Lilith’s Mirror!” And your sister’s relentless quest to get you back, even though you’ve been around more, the young man accused silently.
Inner Moka turned to Ruby. “Cover the mirror, quickly! As long as I’m active, my monster energy will make repairs impossible.”
“Wait, Moka, there has to be another way!” yelled Tsukune.
The silver-haired vampire ignored him, though. She smirked at her counterpart. “After everything I said earlier, it’s ironic that I must now leave Tsukune and the others in your care.”
Before the other Moka could reply, Ruby covered the Lilith’s Mirror with a cloth inscribed with magic runes specifically designed to nullify its magic. The warrior persona faded, and the rosary jewel on the gentle persona’s chest flashed to signal her successful return. The now-reunified vampire looked worriedly to the sky, where the portal seemed to widen rather than shrink.
“Why didn’t that work?” she wondered aloud. “What now?”
A/N: Another week, another chapter - this one a bit more plot-heavy than the others. I wanted to clear up some continuity issues briefly: each chapter takes place at different points throughout the whole series of stories I've written. Mizore's, for example, happens after her first date with Tsukune in "Cut the Crap, Tsukune!" Inner Moka's chapter from this story takes place during her chapter from "Sharing is Caring," probably a few nights before she goes to apologize/seduce Tsukune. Hopefully y'all can figure out the rest; if not, don't hesitate to ask.
Thanks to my reviewers for your feedback, and I look forward to receiving more (review, PM, post on the discussion thread).
