"He's a party pooper." Gertrude watched Broken sit off by himself. Staring at his food instead of eating.
"He's been through a lot, Gertrude." Shade nibbled some leaves that rhey had seen various wild pokemon eating. "He has a decent level. Maybe his old trainer was an idiot, putting him up against the wrong type or just way too strong opponents." Shade watched as Broken dropped his plate and laid down. "He could use a confidence boost."
"And a hug."
Broken felt someone beside him.
He knew it was Shade. He thought back to his first time out of his pokeball since the pokecenter. It was new to him, being asked what he wanted rather than just fed. Being asked about which way they should go instead of just finding himself in a new place at random.
He had gotten a small cut, a scratch really, and Shade talked with a Ratata about what should be used on it. The mouse chewed up this nasty smellijg leaf and it was smeared over the cut. It was gone now, but his new trainer never even tried to catch the pokemon.
They had left in such a hurry they had forgotten potions. It was his fault for upsetting them, that was how he felt right now.
"You want to go see a movie?" The little psychic appeared in front of him, he swung in surprise but missed as she flashed away then was back just out of reach.
He blinked, his eyes wide and he was sweating. "Don't do that!" He yelled. "Scared the shit out of me!"
"Get used to it." Shade chuckled. "So, about that movie?"
"Never been to one." Broken answered.
A few hours later they were back in the town at the base of the volcano.
"I noticed that you don't have any gym badges." Broken said.
"I don't need no stinkin' badges!" Shade's replyade Gertrude giggle. "The truth is, I don't really care about that. Maybe some day, but right now I just want to..." Shade shrugged.
"You want to what?"
"She doesn't know, Broken." Gertrude jumped in.
"Three tickets, please." Shade interrupted the two talking to ask. "Popcorn?"
The movie wasn't the best. Some B class story with surprisingly decent acting. From the human and pokemon cast.
A particular scene had drawn in his attention. A machop with a cowboy hat was rescuing his girlfriend from the bad guy.
He really wanted a hat like that.
As they left the theater Shade carried Gertrude, as usual, and kept a hold of his hand. The three quietly walked together until back at their camp.
There they met an assortment of pokemon, all which wanted to battle.
"Okay, Gertrude, time to defend your title." Shade set her down but Broken stepped up. "Oh, you want to try?"
"Yes. I do." He flexed and set his eyes on the Pidgy in front of the line. "I think I should start."
It was near nightfall when the line dispersed. He was tired, hungry and banged up, but he felt confident. This was more like a bit of rough housimg rather than a fight and win or lose, Shade didn't yell at him or tell him he could have done better. He watched as the other pokemon were healed before they left, and felt a million times better about traveling with his new team.
That night he sat next to the small fire Shade had lit.
"Gertrude, why doesn't she sleep by the fire?" He had finally asked.
"She's Sneasel." The tired Ralts scooted closer and patted his bicep before curling up next to him.
He looked towards Shade, only to see eyes shining back at him. He blinked and they were gone. He chalked it up to his mind playing tricks on him and finally fell into a restful state. Still awake he let himself think about some of the matches he had.
The pidgy had flown him several feet into the air and sent him intp a large bush. He had to be coated with some balm from the rash it had given him. Most of the pokemon in the area suggested clearing it out. He had to agree, that rash still itched in some embarassing places.
A Medichan, a rather cute Medichan, had managed to distract him and tripped him up, sending him stumbling out of the makeshift ring. He had so badly wanted to talk with her but she was called away by her mother before he could work up the courage.
He had learned a new move, no big deal, but it turns out that his old trainer had no idea about what moves were worth using and what style Broken had a knack for. Broken was an offensive fighter, apparently.
Shade had talked with him about his moves, she had never known a Machop before him, well, not face to face. She then looked over her pokedex.
"Why didn't you just look in the pokedex?" He remembered asking.
"This one is experimental." She showed him the device. "We're helping Professor Birch. What we learn from this, he uses on the new ones he is building. Besides, I prefer to talk. Machines are so... impersonnal, besides, you may know attacks other Machop do not."
"Don't we all know or learn the same attacks?" He asked.
"Some things differ. My human father had two Raticate. One from Kanto, one from Jhoto, and there were some differences in their attacks. He had not used any TM, just regular leveling up." She looked unhappy. "One thing I can say, he preferred hard work."
He decided not to push it. "So, I might learn an attack that other Machop cannot learn?"
"Possibility. I mean, there are moves that some pokemon use to learn attacks, then some pokemon can interbreed, who knows how it might affect the offspring."
"That's a good point."
That was the last thing he remembered saying to her before Gertrude called him over. The psychic began to tease him relentlessly about the Medichan.
He had chased her from tree to stone and all over, even pulling a tree from the ground to shake her out. He pissed off a pair of nesting Spearow, but luckily Shade talked them down.
"What are you chuckling about?" Came a groggy and somewhat grumpy question that brought him out of his thoughts.
"Just about how much fun I had today!" He rolled over to see Gertrude looking at him with a small grin on her face. "I don't know what you two did..."
"Nothing." Gertrude stopped him. "I warn you, tomorrow is when it gets rough."
21/10/2009
Noon, though he couldn't tell, it was dark and he could barely see in front of his face.
Shade woke them up at six in the morning, he knew because she told him the time, and then they went into this damned cave.
The whole trip consisted of climbing up the wall. Finding a bell and giving it a ring then going back down to start again.
It wasn't really the climbing, or ringing the bell, it was slipping when he grabbed the loose rock or missed a hand hold and the panic of falling. He was a bunch of nerves, sensitive nerves.
"Okay, let's take a break." Echoed down through the dark. "I think we're all hungry." There was a moment of silence. "Volbeat, flash please." The cave lit up. Shade gave the wild Volbeat a poketreat and the group left the cave.
Sitting out in the sun he watched as Gertrude sat in Shade's lap amd Shade fed her berries. Broken sighed. "Spoiled." He thought.
"Yeah, I know!" It was Gertrude's voice in his head.
"Psychics!" He huffed and he heard Gertrude laughing. The little Ralts sat up and waved him over.
He was hesitant but the constant insisting changed his mind. Soon they lay on their backs, using Shade's legs as pillows. The had wiped dirt off of his face and combed Gertrude's hair.
"I thought that was a hat!" He had told Gertrude.
"Some are. My Mom shaved her head. My sister didn't. I kind of like having hair!" She flicked her hair playfully. "Shade likes hair too!"
He saw Shade blush. "Sne!" It sounded like she gave Gertrude a warning.
He "Her hair is only long enough to make her feather looking thing."
"Back to training!" Shade stood up quick, they sat up involuntarally and fell back down, their heads knocking together lightly.
Shade spun and examined them quickly. Apoligized quickly. Then picked up her pack. "We're running until evening."
Shade had always liked running. A fact that Gertrude had learned early on. So when she and Broken fell back some, Broken asked. "What was with the whole hair thing?"
"I could tell you but then I'll have to wipe your mind."
She grinned. He rolled his eyes.
"She really likes to run. Look at that smile!" Shade was on a turn, from the side you could see her grinning.
She glanced back at them. "Faster!" She hollered. "We'll get pudding with dinner!"
"Okay, that sounds good!" The fighter said excitedly.
Gertrude resisted teleporting while she watched Broken put his muscles to work.
Aftrr their run Shade had them bathe. Broken had his own big barrel filled with warm, relaxing water. As did Gertrude.
Shade was in the cold water of a small pond.
He had never used soap before, this was some organic stuff that smelled like flowers.
A cold ball of water hit him in the face and he heard Gertrude laugh. He chuckled. "Very funny."
"Hey, is there anyone here?"
Both pokemon turned to see a trainer by their campfire.
He looked surprised when the clothes next to it vanished.
"Shade! Company!" Gertrude said verbally in her own tongue.
"Oh, wow! I heard a Ralts, guys!"
Several other voices sounded.
Shade strolled up, dressed in a nice dress and cute little pumps.
"Where did you get those!" Gertrude felt the fabric of the dress.
"I traded some pokeballs I had fixed up." She lifted Broken from his barrel and handrd him a towel then dried off Gertrued who had teleported onto the large flat rock they had cleaned up.
"Hi!" The trainer with the Pikachu said. "Is this your camp?"
Shade nodded. She was less interested in the trainer talking or the other two boys, and smiled at the girl with them.
"Yeah, our camp." She put her hands on Gertrude's and Broken's shoulders. "We were just going into town for dinner."
The obvious adult strpped up and took her hands in his. He was babbling about how beautiful she was.
"Thank you, but..." Gertrude teleported the man into the cold water of the stream. "Thank you, Gertrude!"
Surprisingly his friends all laughed.
Shade's eyes went to May again. "Join us?"
The walk into town was spent pushing Brock away. Max and Gertrude were playing I Spy while Ash, Pikachu and Broken sort of lumped together. Broken and Pikachu talking about something.
Shade and May talked about happenings in the contests and fashion.
At the resteraunt, a pretty exspensive place, Shadehad purposfully gotten the guys a different table, across the room. She felt a little bad, but Brock made her uncomfortable, Ash was loud and Max... he was okay, but Shade wanted to pretend.
She pulled out the other girl's chair.
"I'm not gay." Shade was caught off guard by May's blunt announcememt.
"I figured." Shade set down opposite May. "I just wanted a nice night, maybe a little pretend. I mean, Gertrude is a girl, but she's young, despite being too smart for her age. Broken is also young, and a boy. They're both pokemon. Ash is too loud for me." A shout from the named trainer had May nod in understanding. "I don't really like Brock hanging all over me, and I'm not ready to be out out. Max is cool, but there's that young thing, plus he's a boy."
She sighed.
"A little girl talk. Let me enjoy the view, I mean, you are so pretty!"
May blushed. "Thank you."
"We can talk about whatever, like, what are you aiming for? League champion."
"I want to be a master coordinator." May answered. "I really enjoy the competitions! I've even won one!"
"That's cool! I'm not too familiar with the competitions, would you mind telling me about them?"
The fist two courses of their meal, May explained the competitions and her experiences competing.
The owner personally waited their table and even brought wine.
"How did you afford this?" May asked as a particularly rich dish was served to each of them.
"I fixed a few things. High end espresso machine, antique ice cream maker. I'm pretty good with tools, probably the best thing I got from my father."
"What does your father do?"
"He doesn't. He's dead."
"I'm..."
"Please don't say sorry. He was an aweful person."
"Well, you still have your mother!" Shade hung her head and wiped her eye. "Oh! I didn't mean... I'm sorry."
"It's okay." Shade smiled at the coordinator. "Hey, you need to try this!" Shade held a forkful of her main course up for May to try.
She watched intently as May leaned in and took the bite. Her eyes lit up then closed in delight. She hummed happily as she chewed. "That was amazing!" She finally said.
At the end of the meal Shade picked up Broken. He had eaten himself three servings and coupled with the training from earlier, he wasn't walking on his own. Gertrude was happy to walk for a change.
Both of Shade's team were surprised to see a hotel in view. Though Broken wasn't about to let on that he was now awake. Gertrude got excited and ran through the doors. When they entered they saw her teleporting around the lobby and inspecting everything from the paintings on the wall to the pattern on the carpet.
"Three rooms, please." Shade stepped up. "One with a king and then two with a couple twin beds.
"You are in luck, I have just what you have requested." The fancy dressed man looked up. "Though I doubt you and your party could afford it." He said looking down his nose at them.
Shade glowered. Leaned closer to the man and Spoke in Jhotonese briefly.
Whatever she said, the man gave them their keys without hesitation.
"What was that about?" May asked as she rubbed the soft, fuzzy robe she wore.
"I got in contact with home when Broken was in the pokecenter. He was in bad shape. My... uncle, he insisted that I use what I need while I travel."
"But the money you've spent, are he really okay with that?"
Shade sighed. "I don't want to talk about this." Shade cracked open the vodka and some orange juice. "Want a drink?"
"I had one glass of wine with dinner, i felt bad enough as it was. We're too young!" She said but took the glass anyway.
"No parents no rules, just don't be too stupid." Shade laughed. "I remember taking someone's martini once, my first drink, it burned and i choked on the olive."
May felt her buzz keeping her comfortably warm. Shade's skin was cool against hers.
True to her word, Shade hadn't tried anything funny. She put May's hair in several styles and they talked about things, like boys, and girls. May enjoyed the descriptions of the town Shadr haf chose to live in while Shade hung on intently to every word May said.
For some reason that cool, silky skin kept popping into May's mind. She found herself turning to face Shade while kneeling on her knees.
"You..." Shade's eyes widened as May kissed her. She let her eyes close as she kissed back but then reality had to bring morals to the party. She eased May away from her, the contest coordinator looking hurt and confused. "May, I like you, but I can't take advantage of you." May smiled and hicoughed. Shade gave her a kiss on the corner of her mouth. "Sleep well, and, if you want to... experiment in the morning... I would be honored to."
May leaned in again...
