Jiroh continued, "But then my grandfather died and I had to go back home. I ran away and told K-Chan if they found me, I would never see him again. He cried. We both did. He was so cute. He thought he had done something to make me not like him and that was why I was going away. We spent all night crying and hugging by the pond. He kissed me, my first kiss and told me he loved me." Jiroh brushed away tears still years later.
His voice sounding upset he said, "I told him I loved him too, and he told me I was the only person in the world that loved him. He asked me to marry him, and told me he would take care of me and love me forever. Look, I know it's stupid Shishido. I know I'm stupid for hoping he realizes who I am or feels the same still. That summer meant a lot to both of us, and I can't just leave him. He needs me now. There are things going on, things you don't know about that he cares and protects the team and everyone, even you, and he is all alone with no one to really love him." Jiroh shrugged, "Well I do. I can't help it. He'll always be K-Chan, my first love."
Shishido felt the need to say something in light of this confession, "Jiroh, I can tell you that even though he doesn't know it was you, he's always loved you. He never forgot you or anything, but he is still saying he will marry a girl and worried about losing his inheritance. He won't do anything to jeopardize that. Not even with me Jiroh. Not even if I went back to him would he give that up."
"Shishido? Can I tell you something?" Jiroh looked thrilled at this. The guy leaned over and whispered in Shishido's ear, something that Jiroh obviously held close to his heart as the key to winning Atobe once and for all. Shishido, knowing Atobe well, was not so sure although he could never hope to compete in that way. Nor he realized would he have wanted to have something like that matter. Not even long ago when he had been someone who like Jiroh was hopelessly in love with Atobe Keigo. The curly haired guy grinned thrilled at sharing this latest secret and said, "So you see Shishido, even though our fathers--mine and Atobe's chose to end it and never talk to each other again, K-Chan and I don't have to. You know your mom dated our dads when they all went to Hyoutei right?"
Shishido smiled, "That's what she told me." Apparently his mother before she was with his father was in a love triangle between the two former best friends. To hear his mom tell it, she dated both and the two friends decided to both dump her instead of risking harming their friendship. Now that he had been to Hyoutei and met Atobe's father, now that he knew that Keigo had to marry a girl or lose his inheritance, Shishido was fairly sure his mom either was lying or never knew the truth. What he suspected happened, as Jiroh was in a way hinting at was the two best friends were involved with each other and something, maybe his mother or maybe the money, came in between them. Whatever the reason, Atobe and Jiroh's families did not speak and Shishido knew his mother never spoke to her former boyfriends. Shishido was sure that part of the attraction Atobe had for him and for Jiroh was that they were forbidden for him which only added to the Vice-Captain's pleasure.
Jiroh interrupted his thoughts. "Hey Shishido? You don't have to tell me who it is you like or anything, but can you tell me one thing, please? Is it Gakuto?" Jiroh asked standing close and looking completely interested in the answer.
Despite himself, Shishido laughed, "Are you serious? No way! Gods no! Gakuto? Are you crazy?"
Shishido laughed more and Jiroh soon joined him. It was very funny to think of him and the obnoxious little loudmouth being together in any way. They usually bickered with each other nonstop whenever they were within earshot of each other. Was Jiroh somehow for some unknown reason interested in the annoying guy? He used to tease Gakuto quite a lot, but it had stopped recently. Shishido didn't have the heart to point out that Gakuto was obviously into Oshitari, his doubles partner and roommate, who seemed even impossibly more smitten with the bossy little loudmouth. If Jiroh for some ridiculous reason had a thing for Gakuto of all people he would first need a crowbar to separate the roommates before he had any chance.
Shishido shrugged and figured it was not his problem. He had done his good deed for the day. Shishido remembered the food he had made for Taki and Ohtori and decided he had really done more than one good deed today.
Along the way, Jiroh tried to get hints on who it was Shishido liked. He tried first asking guy or girl but Shishido wouldn't even give him that one. No way. He had troubles enough.
About halfway there, Jiroh gave up and surprisingly asked if the things Atobe did that drove Jiroh nuts also drove Shishido crazy. Like the way he pet your hair as if you were a dog. Or those stupid hickeys he always put on your heart. Shishido had never mentioned most of this stuff to anyone and it was hilarious to see Atobe did the same things with other people. The both were laughing hard by the time they reached the dorms and Shishido said softly to him in between bouts of laughter, "Wait, please tell me he doesn't still say...be awed by my prowess...you know before...?"
Jiroh's jaw dropped open and for a moment Shishido thought he was upset, but in the next instant he fell on Shishido laughing so hard no sound came out. Shishido started laughing hard and said, "No! He does?" He was holding Jiroh up as their laughter rang out in the night.
A few moments later, wiping tears from laughing so hard, Jiroh said, "Hey Shishido thanks. I really needed that. I'm sorry I always hated you, you're really alright."
Shishido shrugged, "So are you. Look, I know we're not friends or anything, but if you ever need to talk--even about more things he does that drive you crazy..." Shishido smiled and Jiroh laughed at that. They parted saying they would see each other at the party later.
He reached his door and listened for a moment as he removed his shoes. He heard nothing inside and when he opened the door, Taki and Ohtori weren't back from dinner or wherever yet. He went into his room and stretched out a little. Sitting for hours studying after running tended to make him sore. Soon enough he lost himself in his history paper. He liked history and the topic he chose was one which he really liked. Distantly he heard Taki and Ohtori arrive home and spared only a moment thinking he hoped their talk went well. It would certainly make his life easier if it did and Taki backed off Ohtori.
Shishido saved what he had written on his old used laptop being sure to back it up on disk since the cranky old thing had a tendency to randomly delete files even if they were saved. He stretched his spine and checked the time. He had gotten a lot done in an hour and had at least an hour more to kill before he had to get dressed. He thought maybe he would read this historical novel he had bought at a used store a while ago and never seemed to get to when he heard a loud crash followed by Ohtori yelling, "NO!" There was the sound of more things crashing and breaking.
He stood at his closed door. Shishido waited to go out there until he was sure he should. If the two of them were fighting he really should break it up, but maybe Taki really needed to be decked once.
"No! NO! It's not true! It's NOT! Take it BACK!" Ohtori was yelling and there was the sound of more things breaking. Shishido stopped hesitating. He threw open his door and went out there careful not to step on the shards of broken glass and bits of plates that were everywhere. He quickly took in the scene.
Taki was standing there with his hands over his mouth in horror while Ohtori was smashing everything breakable in sight. While destroying everything, he would occasionally yell out things like, "No! It's not true!"
Shishido crossed to Taki. One problem at a time. "Taki, go wait outside."
Taki looked in surprise at him, "But I didn't do anything! I told him he's the one who keeps calling me over at night, and he went crazy!"
He took Taki's upper arm firmly in his hand and dragged him to the door. Shishido opened it, shoved Taki outside, and threw on his shoes. He grabbed a pair of Ohtori's while he was there too. "Taki wait here and if you say anything about this to anyone I will never forgive you. You got it Taki? You keep your big mouth shut and stand here or else!"
Before Taki could respond, Shishido opened their door again and locked it behind him. Ohtori was still smashing everything not nailed down and Shishido was amazed to see him not bleeding from a thousand places. The one time Shishido had been upset like this he had not been so lucky. Ohtori grabbed Shishido's favorite coffee mug and held it in his trembling hands. It was the cup the freshman filled with his coffee every morning, and pretty much that and his coffee pot were the only things not destroyed. "Choutarou?" Shishido said softly and approached him as if walking up to a wild animal. He set Ohtori's shoes down and tried again when he got no response.
"Choutarou? I like that cup. Don't break it." Shishido smiled what he thought would be reassuringly.
Ohtori turned to face him alarmed with tears in his eyes. "Oh no! Oh god no! You can't see me like this. No!" He set the mug down and covered his face with his hands as he started to cry hard. "No...no...no!" he sobbed so upset it broke Shishido's heart.
Shishido went to him and put his arms around him. He held him close and said, "It's okay now Choutarou. I've got you. It's okay. I'm right here baby. It's okay. Shh..." But Ohtori's knees seemed to give out as racking sobs overtook him. Shishido was having a hard time holding him up and as he looked at the broken glass and dishes all over the floor he worried that Ohtori would seriously hurt himself. "Choutarou?" Ohtori cried harder and started falling to the floor faster, "Choutarou! Look at me!" Finally the freshman did. "There's broken glass all over the floor. You don't want me to get hurt, right?" Ohtori looked at him distraught and confused. "Do not move. Not a millimeter. I mean it. You stay right there."
In three big steps hopping over the shattered remains of their kitchen, Shishido grabbed Ohtori's shoes and returned to him. The freshman and his clothes were covered in the dinner Shishido had made and on impulse he licked Ohtori's beef casserole spotted cheek when he reached him. "So?" Shishido dropped Ohtori's shoes and indicated he should put them on. "You don't like my mom's beef casserole?" Shishido held out his hands and walking carefully backwards, he held onto the confused and distraught freshman. Walking with him, he stepped Ohtori out of the kitchen and down the hall to Shishido's room. "I made your dinner you know. I didn't want Taki to poison you or something. I found him here today earlier calling restaurants trying to buy beef casserole and pass it off like he had made it."
Ohtori again started to cry as Shishido closed his bedroom door behind him. "Shishido-san, I'm so sorry I..." He started crying harder and covered his face. "I'm so ashamed, I..."
Shishido put his arms around him as he started sobbing again. "It's all right now. Shh...Choutarou, you have nothing to be sorry or ashamed about. This is a hard place and we had a difficult day, but it's okay now. I'm here. I'm with you, baby. I've got you." Shishido held him close and let him cry it out. This time when the freshman pulled them down to the floor, Shishido went with him and held on to him. He sobbed so hard he gave himself the hiccups. As his sobbing slowed down and Ohtori's breathing returned to normal, Shishido held him close. Sometimes he told him it was all right and sometimes he kissed his tear stained face. Eventually Ohtori's crying wound down.
He was quiet, save for the occasional hiccup, and lay with his head on Shishido's chest. He held Shishido tightly back otherwise he would have thought the freshman had slipped into sleep. Shishido could have sat there like this for as long as Choutarou needed him, all night if need be, but he remembered he'd left Taki out in the hallway. With a curse he sat up and placing a soft kiss on Choutarou's lips he told him to stay right where he was.
Shishido opened their front door a moment later and a very angry Taki fell backwards. "What the hell Shishido? You left me out here forever! I didn't do anything!"
Furious, Shishido grabbed the back of Taki's shirt and dragged him still seated on the ground inside. He shut and locked the door behind him. Taki stood up and whirled around to face him. He went to yell at Shishido who covered his mouth with his hand and shoved him hard up against their shut door. Shishido held his fist out ready to seriously punch Taki. After the frustrations of the day, he practically begged Taki to make a sound. Shishido growled at him, "So he was calling for you at night?" That's why you touched and kissed him?
Taki nodded looking enraged. Shishido took his hand off his mouth thinking Taki would probably bite him if he didn't.
He ordered before Taki could say a word, "Tell me exactly what he said and be quiet about it."
Taki must have seen how angry Shishido was, and realized that Shishido was bigger than him. He said softly, "Every night since we moved in he would say my name in his sleep. Tak, hold me. Tak, I miss you. Tak, I can't stop thinking about you. Tak, sleep next to me. Tak, this and Tak, that. During the day he would say he wasn't interested but every night he clearly was. Hell, he kissed me back."
Shishido was so angry he saw red. He fought for control of himself because Ohtori needed him now. He coldly whispered, "And it never once occurred to you idiot that his dead best friend's name was Takeo?" Taki's jaw dropped open and Shishido continued, "He never called for you. He was calling for his dead friend. That was who he missed and who he wanted to hold him. Not you!"
"N..no way. Not possible. He says my name and sometimes yours but mostly mine." Taki put his chin up and stubbornly insisted.
"Taki if you ever touch him again, and I don't care if he is spread eagle, naked, wide-awake, and begging you for it, I will destroy you. Am I clear? I will personally go to Atobe and have you sent so far down you will wish you had died." Taki went to protest but before he could Shishido said, "Say anything or do anything about this and I will take you down. Go on Taki. Try it. It will be my pleasure to ruin you after beating the hell out of you right now first. You keep away from my little brother. If I hear anything, anything about you acting as more than just a friend to him awake or asleep you will find out just how brutal I can be. Do you understand?"
Taki went to say something in his defense and seemed to think better of it. He nodded.
Without another word, Shishido let him go. He turned his back on him and walked away. He went back to his room and Ohtori.
The freshman had put on some of Shishido's clothes which were too small on him. He was wearing another turtleneck--Shishido didn't even know he owned one--it was too short in the sleeves for him and a pair of sleep pants that clung tightly to him like second skin and only came to the middle of his calves. His taught muscular stomach was bared from the too short shirt in a very sexy way. "Sorry, you...uh...said I had to stay here and my clothes were all stained. I'll uh...wash yours Shishido-senpai." Ohtori blushed crimson.
Shishido took him in his arms, held him close, and kissed him softly. "You can use anything of mine you want, baby." Shishido took his hand and sat him down on the bed. "I forgot I locked Taki out and had to let him back in. I talked to him, and he said he won't bother you anymore. Okay?"
Ohtori nodded and looked down. "S...sorry," he mumbled softly.
"Nothing to be sorry for." Shishido said and noticed tears were silently hitting Ohtori's hands which were folded in his lap. Shishido covered his hands with his own and said, "Hey, it's really okay now. Do you want to talk about it?" Shishido hoped but after having gotten his hopes up so many times, he expected to be disappointed again, and was.
Ohtori shook his head no. Shishido almost in frustration said everything, despite his oath, right then and there, but before he could, Ohtori took his hands in his own. In a voice barely above a whisper he said, "I want to Shishido-san. I want to tell you everything more than anything, but...it just feels too soon. I'm not ready yet, please, please forgive me." Ohtori looked at him with tears in his eyes. "I'll tell you everything. I swear I will, and I have no right to ask, but please just give me a little time. I just got some really bad news and there's this thing I have to do that I'm not ready to do yet, but I'm okay now. I am." Despite his words Ohtori was crying again and Shishido held him. He held him and let him cry and wondered when the last time the freshman had cried was.
After a long time, Ohtori nuzzled up closer to him and said softer yet, "When you hold me like this Shishido-senpai, I feel like I can do anything."
Shishido smiled despite his disappointment. He reminded himself there were things he was still not ready to say to Choutarou, things he wanted terribly to tell him, but it was too soon for him as well. "You can do anything, baby. You're stronger than you know." Shishido thought though that there were some things he could share. "Are you hurt anywhere?" Shishido asked him.
"I don't think so. No." Ohtori shrugged and shook his head, "Just really embarrassed that you saw me like that. Th...thank you for helping me, and I'm sorry I broke everything. I'll pay for everything and replace it all. I've never done anything like that before, I promise."
"I'm glad I could be there for you baby. Because when I got upset like you did, my freshman year, I wasn't so lucky." Shishido knew he couldn't remove his shirt because of the damn hickey but he slipped his right arm out of the sleeve making sure to keep his chest covered. "It was around the beginning of school last year." Shishido told him about the girl who had a crush on him and his horrible blind date when she jumped him. How she made her friend dump his brother, and his brother left school blaming his unhappiness on Shishido. "My brother and I were fighting on the stairs. Arguing. I didn't want him to go and called him a coward. He said something he knew would really hurt me. Something I want to tell you too, but it's too soon. I promise I will tell you though."
He looked at Choutarou to make sure he understood about that. Shishido kissed him softly when he saw he did. "Anyway I would never hit my brother so I went to punch the wall, but the wall was about a meter to the right. Instead I punched the window. You know those big ones on the stairs? I hit it just right, or wrong you could say and completely shattered the glass. See all these scratches and scars? You have to look close but the window as it smashed down shredded my arm. I'm lucky it didn't cut the damn thing off or break my hand. Back then the windows in the stairs were all thin handmade glass and the way I hit it just shattered it completely. After that happened and that one kid jumped out another window, they put in the safety glass they have in them all now." Shishido could have kicked himself for stupidly mentioning the infamous suicide.
Ohtori instead of reacting to it though, was softly tracing the fine scars on his arm with his fingertips as if they were delicate brush strokes of beautiful words rather than old little scars. Shishido was lucky he needed no stitches and that Atobe's doctor had used this stuff that left only faint lines that he assured Shishido by the time he graduated junior high would fade to be almost undetectable. With his tennis tan you could barely notice them now, only really where the sun hadn't darkened his skin. Ohtori brought his lips softly to the scars and traced them with his tongue sending an electric shock down Shishido's spine. He shivered and whispered, "Choutarou..."
Ohtori pulled back to smile at him. Shishido kissed him for a long moment and worked his arm back inside his shirt as they kissed. Finally the kiss broke and he said, "I would like nothing more than to spend the entire night with you baby kissing just like this, but we have a party to go to. You haven't eaten, and neither have I. Pizza? My treat?" Ohtori smiled and nodded. "Good, you go shower and I'll order."
Ohtori looked worried, "Shishido-san? Won't we be really late? The invitation said seven." It was seven thirty.
Shishido smiled. "It says seven when they want you there at ten. Don't worry, Atobe has a car coming for all of us around nine. We have plenty of time." Shishido paused him by the door and kissed him. He held Ohtori's face in his hand softly and kissed him again. "You're okay now, baby? Even with seeing Taki if he's home?"
Ohtori hesitated and looked embarrassed once more. He held Shishido a little tighter and met his lips in a kiss. It started out soft and the kind of kiss someone does when they need comfort but Ohtori licked his tongue over Shishido's lips. Once, twice, and the freshman parted his lips with his tongue. Shishido eagerly met his tongue with his own. He felt like he would never get tired of kissing him, and yet, there never seemed to be enough time to just kiss as they both wanted to. After a very hot moment, Ohtori pulled back to look at him and smiled shyly, "Now I'm okay."
Shishido smiled back and said confused, "Sorry, what was the question? I can't think when you kiss me like that baby."
"Good." Ohtori said and smiled more. "I was going to shower, you were going to order pizza, and I'm okay now Shishido-senpai because of you." Ohtori kissed him softly again but this time instead of deepening the kiss, he pulled back, opened the door and walked out of the room. He left Shishido standing there hard, horny, happy, wanting more, and missing him even though he was just in the next room getting his things.
"That is so unfair." Shishido said. He heard Ohtori laugh.
"What's unfair?" Taki asked from the other room. Shishido walked out to look at him and noticed he looked scared. He also noticed the kitchen was completely cleaned, and the broken bits cleared away. Shishido figured that was as much apology as the guy would ever give.
Shishido sighed and took pity on him, "That the pizza is on me if you're in."
Taki shrugged, "Hell yeah I'm in. Just no anchovies."
"Not a problem." Shishido shrugged. "Oh the car is coming for us at nine if you want to ride with us Taki."
"You're going?" Taki looked shocked. "Seriously?" Taki looked stunned and said, "But, you never go to these things anymore."
Shishido shrugged, "Of course I'm going. He's my little brother and it's his little sister's birthday."
