Chapter 7: Obsessions
She hadn\'t slept since that night. That stupid night of lost sense. Grin had given her a pitying look, but had told her that he would look out for Faye. Rain was tired. Her eyeballs felt as though someone was pulling on the back of them. She needed sleep desperately. Jet had called only a few minutes earlier, informing her of Spike\'s vanishing act after hearing the name Julia. She had been to ashamed to speak, she had driven him back to that whore.
Of course, maybe she had been wrong about Julia. She remembered now, Julia had always looked so sad, as though trapped. Rain sighed as she lit a ciggarette and leaned against a brick wall. Julia had been a prisioner, HIS prisioner, the only escape she had was Spike. Rain sypathized, because hadn\'t she done something similar? Hadn\'t she escaped the syndicate and the piercing eyes of that coldhearted snake into Spike\'s arms? She laughed at the irony.
\"Figures,\" she chuckled as she puched herself off the wall and started to walk slowly through the white snow. \"I guess this is poetic justice.\"
She lifted the collar of her black trenchcoat and shoved her hands into her pockets as the ciggarette hung out of the corner of her mouth as she remembered Faye\'s hurt face. \"Why don\'t you ever, think things through, Spike?\" she asked outloud.
\"It\'s not in his nature to think. He\'s a beast,\" a dark voice answered from the shadows behind her.
Rain slowly turned towards the shadows, her hand on her pistol. \"Who goes there?\" she asked.
\"It\'s been a while, Eve,\" the voice said as a figure appeared from the shadows, thier face still shrouded in shadow.
Rain\'s eyes narrowed. \'I know that voice.\' Quickly she tossed her dying ciggarette into the snow and pointed her pistol at the figure. \"How do you know that name?\"
The figure chuckled softly and took another step into the light. \"It hasn\'t been that long.\"
Rain\'s eyes widened in shock. \"No, it can\'t be!\" she gasped.
The man before her smiled. At least she recognized him now. He could feel the eyes of his companion on his back. He glanced slightly at the younger man, shooting him a glare that told him to leave, that this was personal. His companion nodded and dissappeared into the night.
Rain narrowed her gaze at the man. \"Why are you here?\"
The man smiled again. \"I have a business deal with a local. I didn\'t expect to see you here, but it is a pleasant surprise nonetheless.\" Rain took a step back, trying to create more distance between them. This did not go unnoticed by the man, causing the smile to vanish instantly. \"Are you afraid, Eve?\" he asked.
Rain leveled the pistol with his chest. \"Never.\"
\"I heard you were in the hospital recently, I take it you\'re recovered?\" he asked.
\"Don\'t try to be civil with me,\" she snapped. \"Not after the things you did!\"
The man\'s smirk returned. \"Fond memories...\"
\"Nightmares!\" she shouted.
A thin eyebrow arched in question. \"We must have expierienced different things.\"
\"We did.... How did you know I was in the hospital?\" she asked.
His smirk widened.
Her eyes widened in realization. \"You bastard! It was you! You poisoned me! I should kill you!\" she screamed.
\"Yes, it was me. You needed to be punished, Eve,\" he sighed.
\"Punished? Punished for what? I\'ve done nothing to you.\"
\"You left, that was enough. You ran tM ofM of all people!\" he growled, his smirk replaced by a sneer.
A light of knowing now lit her eyes. \"I see. You think that you owned me? You\'re a fool.\"
\"A fool, am I?\"he asked.
\"I was never yours, you know that. I belonged to no one but the syndicate,\" she explained.
\"You were supposed to be mine, Eve.\"
\"Stop calling me that! Eve, the red dragon, is dead!\" she snarled.
His smile returned once again as he took a few steps closer and placed the back of his fingers against her face, caressing her pale skin softly. His eyes seemed soft now, possibly even loving. Rain\'s eyes filled with sadness as she averted her gaze from his. \"Don\'t look at me like that,\" she whispered.
The man\'s eyes looked hurt for a moment, before growing cold. \"As you wish,\" he said as he took a step back. \"Tell me one thing, do you have feelings for him?\"
Rain shook her head. \"No, but I do for someone else.\"
His hand vanished into his coat, his fingers wrapping around the hilt of his blade. \"I see. So be it,\" he said in a flat tone.
Rain\'s eyes widened and moved to his now passive face. \"What?\"
Before she could move, a silver light shined through the space between them, the sing of metal as it escaped a sheath, the sound of flesh and cloth being torn, followed by the sing of the metal once again as it returned to whence it came. Her eyes remained frozen on him as a blossom of red flew out, falling to the ground, staining the pure white of the snow. In and instant she staggered to the wall, where her back connected with the stone wall with a slap. slowly, she slid down the wall until her body landed on the ground with a soft thump.
He watched impassivly as her eyes stayed wide with shock and pain. Her ebony curtain of hair matted against her forehead and hanging in her eyes. Her back clothes darkened with the red life that bled from her breast. He watched with a morbid facination as a single tear formed and trickled over her paling skin only to fall to the cold ground and mix with the red snow.
A strngle gasp escaped her lips as a soft veil of snow began to fall, the silence following, deafaning. A lone man stopped before this ghastly scene. His emerald eyes wide as they drank in the horrid beauty of it. The broken and bleeding beauty, the cold and cruel monster above her, watching with sorrow and anger. It was then he realized, he knew her. Instantly, the instrument case in his hand fell to the ground as he pulled out a pistol and leveled it with the man\'s head. \"Step away from her!\" he shouted.
Rain lifted her head slowly, her eyes resting on the man before them. \"Raven...\" she gasped.
The man laughed cruelly. His laugh, colder than the air around them, seemed to nearly freeze Raven\'s blood in his veins. It was an evil laugh, one of a monster than had more blood on his hands than one could possibly imagine. The laugh of a demon that mocked at you as it devoured you, body and soul. Yes, this was that kind of man. His pale stare could frighten the most hardened of warriors, his presence could freeze desert air at noon, his cackle, yes it was a cackle, could make any before him tremble with fear. This cold snake of a man before him was not a true man. No, he was a monster, in its truest sense. A more vile villan of his kind could only be found in stories and fables. Yes, this was the man before him.
He had heard of this cruel being, the rumors and stories of his coldness floated through the air of this city like the smog that covered the sky. Few didn\'t fear this man, this not including himself. No, Raven was terrified, but the thought of losing the woman that lay in a crumpled heap against the wall was too horrid a thought. The stain of red upon the snow seemed to grow, seeping past her body and to the feet of her attacker.
\"Eve...\" Raven whispered.
The man laughed. \"Eve is dead, and now Rain follows her previous alias to the grave.\"
Raven glared at the silver haired monster before him. \"But, why?\" he asked, the pistol tight in his grip.
\"Because, I lost her,\" he answered plainly.
\"But, that doesn\'t justify killing her!\" Raven shouted.
The cold eyed man shook his head. \"Youth... if I can\'t have her, no one will!\" he explained.
Raven squeezed the trigger. \"You bastard!\" he shouted.
A shot rang through the darkness, shattering the silence surrounding them. Raven stumbled onto his heels as he clutched his chest, blood seeping past his fingers. The cold man snapped his head to where his companion stood, his pistol smoking.
\"For the glory of the Than,\" the young man stated.
Rain gasped for breath, the air burning in her lungs, attempting to circulate her thinning blood. \"Raven...\" she whispered.
The silver haired man glanced down at Rain, doubt now burning within his eyes. He kneeled to the ground, leveling his eyes with hers. \"I can\'t let you die...\" he said softly as he caressed her pasty looking cheek with his hand. \"Rain.\"
Rain gasped again as he lifted her into his arms and carried her into the darkness, leaving the young man with the emerald eyes in the snow, his body cold with death.
The snow continued to fall, slowly covering a black instrument case that lay next to the man\'s corpse, the only reminder of the actions that night.
