Yukki could still hear Kaname’s words in her head. It was like a song on repeat. “Come to my room in the morning and I will tell you all you wish to know.” Yukki was so deep in thought that she almost missed the movement out of the corner of her eye. She carefully reached down to feel Artimis securely strapped to here thigh. Slowly standing up, she tried to act as normally as possible by smoothing her skirt, pulling her jacket down, and brushing her hair out of her face. ‘It’s getting longer.’ She thought absently to herself. She walked slowly beside the fence on the cold grey stone cobbled walk way. When she came to the spot where she had spotted the movement, she jumped over the wont iron fence. She landed gracefully in front of a well dressed man. The man looked started for a moment before he quickly schooled his face to look lost. The man looked like a normal business man in a black suit with a dark blue tie, but Yukki was not fooled she could sense this mans predatory nature and had seen how he had reacted when she had startled him. This was no ordinary person.
“Can I help you?” Yukki asked the man.
“So sorry, I was late getting off of work and missed the parents meeting that was scheduled for me to attend.” The man stated politely.
Yukki kept her face carefully straight. She knew that there were no parent meetings scheduled for today. “Sir, if you would like I can show you to the front gate and take you to the Chairman’s office.” Yukki offered. If this man wanted to keep up the pretense of this bogus meeting then she would to. The Chairman always told her never to attack unless it was in defense. She also wanted to know why this man was here close to the school grounds.
The man suddenly grinned showing his fangs, “That will not be necessary.” The man said with a low growl, reaching for Yukki. Yukki quickly stepped back, extracting Artimis, and extending the blessed silver anti-vampire staff. The male vampire jumped back a small step and grasped for Artimis. He hissed in pain as his skin came into contact with the staff, quickly releasing it to glare at Yukki. “Let me guess, you must be the other guardian, the daughter of Klien Cross, Ms. Yukki Cross.”
“I am.” Yukki answered, “And you would be?”
“That is of no matter. I am glad I found you, even though I would have enjoyed a snack. You can tell me where I can find Zero Kiriyuu.” The vampire said in a cold voice, advancing on Yukki.
Yukki pulled Artimis into a defensive stance and asked, “What do you want with Zero?” Before she could ask anymore questions the vampire lunged at her. Yukki was startled when the vampires charge was suddenly halted by none other than Zero.
“I am the one you are looking for. So why are you so insistent on attacking Yukki?” Zero asked angrily.
“So it is true,” the male vampire stated smugly with a smirk, “We were told that you were her protector. If she was in trouble you would come running to save her just like a knight in the fairytales you humans seem to enjoy so much. A lowly level E trying to protect a weak human girl, I would not have believed it if I had not seen it myself. Are you forgetting boy, humans are nothing but food. Why protect her when you should be feeding from her. Move aside and we can share her sweet blood.”
Yukki could not believe her ears, ‘Level E?’ “Zero is no level E, he is still human!” she said defensively.
The male vampire started to laugh. “My, my, you are innocent are you not, just like your adopted father? I am talking about draining you dry and you are worried about him being a Level E or not. That is of no matter anyway. Zero Kiriyuu,” The vampire said his face and voice turning deathly cold;”you are here by sentenced by the Vampire Council to be executed for the murder of the pure blood vampire, Shizuka Hiou.”
“You can not do this. Vampires can not kill humans on school grounds. It goes against the treaty. Zero is not a vampire, he is still human.” Yukki said in a pleading voice.
“Girl, the treaty is already broken. Kiriyuu may have not fallen to a Level E, but his still an active member of the Hunter’s and as the treaty states if a hunter kills a pure blood then they themselves are punishable by death.” The vampire said like he was talking to a small child.
“But, Zero is innocent he did not kill Shizuka Hiou.” Yukki said desperately. ‘Why was Zero not defending himself? He was with her when Shizuka was killed. They had walked into the room in time to watch her turn to ashes. Did they not realize that Zero could not have killed her? He could not go against her wishes, and he was not strong enough to rip out her heart.’ Yukki did not know who had killed Shizuka, but she was not going to let Zero die for something he did not do.
“Yukki, please stay out of this.” Zero said in a calm voice. ”You are here for me. So let’s get this over with.” ‘They know full well that I could not have killed Shizuka, they are just looking for a scapegoat. Man, why can’t my life be simple for once.’
“As you wish, I will dispose of the abomination that should have never been made. Then I will eliminate all of the witnesses.” The vampire said smiling menacingly at Yukki.
Seeing the look the vampire gave Yukki and feeling her shudder beside him, Zero’s eyes turned a dark blood red. He reached out quickly and grabbed the other male by the throat. “I would have let you take my life for this false charge, but you should have never threatened Yukki.” Zero snarled into the vampires face.
The vampire looked as shocked as Yukki was. ‘When did Zero get this strong?’ she thought.
‘I hate to admit this even to myself, but thank you Kuran for this power.’ Zero thought looking lovingly at Yukki. ‘I must protect her.’ Zero then quickly took out Bloody Rose and fired one shot straight into the male vampire’s heart. Zero watched with a bored expression as the vampire turned to dust in his hands. He looked up and glanced into the surrounding forest and smiled evilly. “So, they sent more than one to take care of the weak Level E. I have to say I’m deeply flattered.”
“You cannot take us all on by yourself, Zero Kiriyuu, no matter how strong you have become.” A female voice said from the tree line.
‘More than one? They had sent more than one? Sure Zero was stronger but there was no way that he could hold off more than two at a time, and Zero would tire out in time. I will not let him do this by himself. Zero should not be punished for something that was not his doing. Chairman always told me to be fair and this is not fair. I will not let Zero fight alone.’ Yukki thought. “He will not have to.” She said aloud coming up to stand beside Zero.
“Yukki, I told you to stay out of this.” Zero growled. ‘Why can’t she run somewhere safe? Why does she always have to get into the middle of this? I don’t care if they tear me apart, but if they harm her then I will loss what little hold I still have on my sanity. I can not let them hurt her. She is so innocent. She should not care for me. She should not try to protect me. All I have done is hurt her. I owe her my life and here she is willing to risk her own for me. I love her so much, but at times I think I hate her to.’
“I will not let you die. I will protect you. You gave me that gun so I could kill you when you became a Level E. I will not forget our promise.” Yukki said with a determined look on her face.
Slowly the vampires sent by the Council started to approach the two Prefects.
“What business does the dogs of the Council have at this school?” a hard cold voice stated.
“Kaname!” Yukki started in surprise.
“Kuran.” Zero growled. ‘Just great, why does he have to be here?’ ”I don’t need your help, so stay out of this.”
Kaname smirked at the tone Zero’s voice had taken. ‘He knows nothing is free and everything has a price. He does not want to owe me anything.’ “Kiriyuu, you may be stronger, but I will not allow your blood to be shed on these grounds.”
“Kuran-sama, if you interfere we can not care out the justice of the Council. It has been ruled that Zero Kiriyuu is to be executed for the death of a pure blood.” One of the vampires said in a pleading voice.
Kuran looked at the vampires gathered with distain. “You can go back to the Council and tell them that if there is punishment needed here at this school then I shall deal with it how I see fit. Tell them the next time they send dogs that the dogs will not be coming back.”
“So you will defy the Council?” the lead vampire said in surprise.
“I will do as my parents wished. This is a peaceful place. You may leave with your lives if you leave now. If you value your meager existence as dogs you will not step foot on these school grounds or attack Zero Kiriyuu again. Have I made myself clear?” Kaname said in a hard voice.
“Yes Kuran-sama, as you wish.” The lead vampire said bowing low to Kaname. Kaname could see the hatred in their eyes. ‘The dogs have to be taught not to bite their owners’ Kaname thought.
‘Kaname just saved Zero? I thought Kaname hated Zero? Why would he save Zero?’ Yukki thought. She was completely puzzled. This made no sense.
Zero’s thoughts were in no better shape. He just stared at Kuran as though he had grown two heads. ‘Kuran just protected me! Why would he do that? What does he want? No he had to step in to save Yukki. He was not protecting me he was protecting Yukki. But he could have done that after they finished me.’ Zero could not keep these puzzling thoughts out of his head. Zero turned sharply on his heel and walked away without saying a word to Kaname or Yukki.
“How rude!” Aido sputtered.
“Let him be.” Kaname said softly, “He has a lot to think about.”
The other vampires from the Night Class turned and began to walk away, commenting on how rude Zero was to their beloved Kaname-sama.
“Thank you, Kaname.” Yukki said glancing shyly up at the handsome vampire.
Kaname leaned down and whispered into her ear. “I eagerly await your answer in the morning.” Yukki could not repress the shiver that went trough her body at his words and the feel of his warm breath against her skin. Kaname took a step back. He had felt her shiver. He grinned and bowed slightly to her. “I will see you soon Princess.” Kaname turned slowly and began to walk back to the Moon Dorm. He could not keep a grin off his face as he imagined what would happen in the morning if all went according to plan.
Yukki could still hear Kaname’s words in her head.
