Chapter Five An Unwanted Rescuer
The jungle itself was already hot; combined with the
small fire in Mokito’s tree-hut, the temperature was sweltering. This didn’t stop Dawn from trembling from
head to foot as she stood before her future husband. The Chieftain’s son leaned against the wall
opposite Dawn with his arms crossed over his chest. He licked his lips expectantly and motioned
for her to do something.
Blinking rapidly to stop tears, Dawn lifted the Teddiursa
egg. Mokito pointed to a crudely
constructed table to her right. Her
heart pounded as she shook her head.
Fury flashed in Mokito’s dark eyes and he shouted something at her,
pointing to the table again.
She placed it on the table obediently and tried only to
focus on the sound of her heart. Mokito
stepped forward and pointed to the vine-string which held her skirt together on
her hip. Dawn shook her head fervently
and shut her eyes. Mokito glared at her
and growled lowly. Remembering that he
was not to touch her, she simply set her jaw and remained frozen. The cannibal let out a furious snarl and
reached for her, then stopped suddenly, seeming to remember custom.
Dawn’s knees were shaking so much that she felt as though
they would give way at any moment. She forced
herself to look past Mokito, finding a spot to stare at on the wall and
focusing on it. Mokito eyed her warily
and reached for the string again; evidently, he had decided that desire was
more important than custom. Rational
thought left her and was being replaced by panic. Her pulse quickened and she took a step back
as Mokito leaned closer. He laughed
coolly as she did and he moved closer still.
“Get away from me,” she spat. Hadn’t Wayra said that he was not to touch
her? Dawn quickly grabbed the Teddiursa
egg. Mokito halted his advance as Dawn
held it up high, threatening to drop and break it. If they thought the egg was some sort of
blessed object, she figured, breaking it might make them think they were
cursed. This appeared to be the case as
Mokito froze.
A scream suddenly broke out from below the hut. Dawn jumped in surprise and nearly dropped
the egg. Mokito rushed to the entrance
and looked out, shouting at the cannibals.
He leapt backward as a green ball of light shot past his nose, landing
inches from Dawn and burning a hole in the wall. She fell to her knees instinctively as more
of the green lights flashed by, and with a jolt Dawn realised they were Pokémon
moves. Wild Pokémon must have been
attacking.
The cannibals continued to scream and Mokito left the
hut, abandoning Dawn to fight off the attackers. Clutching the egg to her chest, Dawn
scrambled beneath the hole the Energy Ball had made. It was just big enough for her to squeeze
through, and luck was on her side when she saw there was a branch directly
beneath it. She carefully went through
the hole and stood on the branch, looking for a way down. She found one soon enough and held the egg in
one arm as she made her way to the ground.
“Oh, my...” she breathed.
A majority of the huts were up in flames. The cannibals ran about blindly, screaming at
the tops of their lungs. Another Energy
Ball was shot towards the hut Dawn had just escaped from, causing the whole
thing to tremble. With a jolt, Dawn
caught a glimpse of the Sceptile that sent the attack. She didn’t think Sceptile would live here.
Run, you idiot!
Dawn began to run.
She was almost certain that she was heading in the wrong direction, but
panic seized control and forced her feet to just go. She was grateful for
being allowed to keep her shoes on while having to suffer that terror, but the
skirt didn’t make running easy.
“Wait!” someone called – a male voice, but she didn’t
stop. It could have been Wayra since it
didn’t sound like either Max or Brock.
She wasn’t about to slow down to check.
And then, very suddenly, the ground ended. Dawn screamed as she let go of the egg with
her right hand, flailing it about and finding something to grab. She gripped a rock as tightly as she could as
she hung from the cliff; looking down, she saw the river they’d crossed before,
only now it was moving very fast and it was quite rocky. She kicked out her legs to find some footing.
“Hang on!” said the voice again, this time sounding more
familiar. Dawn began to slip and she
mustered up all of her strength to pull herself up, even by a little bit,
though it seemed to make everything worse.
“Help!” she called, no longer caring who it was who was
up there so long as they got her out of this mess. “I’m here, I’m over the side—”
A gloved hand extended down towards her. “Take it!” the boy ordered. Her grip slipped a bit more and she cried out
in fear.
“I can’t! It’s too
far!”
The young man grunted and tried to reach farther. “Here, take this!” Dawn said, raising her
other arm and handing him the egg. He
took it and placed it beside him before reaching back for her. Dawn managed to reach high enough for them to
grab each others’ wrists; he reached for her with his other hand and gripped
her tightly as he pulled.
“I could use a hand,” he said through gritted teeth.
“I’m doing the best I can!” she snapped back, trying to
find footing to help out.
“Not you!”
And then she rose very suddenly, flying back over the
edge and landing on top of the young man.
Her teeth sank into her lower lip and blood gushed into her mouth. “Ow,” she groaned, rolling off her rescuer. Looking up, she saw the same Sceptile that
had attacked the huts – he’d pulled them up.
“Once again,” her rescuer panted, “I arrive...in the nick
of time...to save your butt. You
can’t...can’t keep out of trouble, can you?”
Dawn looked to the young man, who sat up and ran his
hands through his dark hair before replacing the cap on his head. There was just enough moonlight to make out
his features: the large brown eyes, the ski-jump nose, the thick brows with the
wild hair that spilled over his forehead and eyes—
“You,” she
groaned. “Why do you have to be here, of
all places?”
“Gee, you’re welcome for saving your life.” Ash Ketchum thanked his Sceptile for his help
before recalling him into his Pokéball.
“What were you doing with those cannibls and what the heck are you
wearing?”
“The latest fashions from Hoenn,” Dawn snapped. She rolled her eyes and said slowly, “The
traditional wedding attire of Nenwe tribeswomen. I...I agreed to marry the Chieftain’s son so
that May, Max and Brock could go free.
Our guides weren’t exactly leading us to the ruins. What are you
doing here? Why are you here?”
“You were going to get married?”
“Why are you here?” Dawn repeated, raising her voice. She crossed her arms over her chest
stubbornly and stuck out her lower lip.
“I followed you,” Ash snapped. There was a rustle in the bushes on his right
before his Pikachu leapt out and crawled up his arm. “Professor Oak told me to go check on you
after Professor Rowan’s funeral. I went
the other day, but your mother said you’d gone somewhere that morning with May
and Max, and that you wouldn’t be back for a few weeks. So I went back to Professor Oak and he made a
few calls around. Somehow we managed to
get in contact with Brock and he said that he was on Calarai Island, waiting
for you to get here, so you could go on some big expedition. I told him not to tell you I called. And then Professor Oak said it was vitally
important for me to come get you and bring you home. So...there.
That’s it.”
“That’s sketchy, even for you. Ash, do you really expect me to believe that
Professor Oak just randomly sent you down here?
Why on earth would he want us back up there so bad?”
“I don’t know! He
just said that you had to come home before you get hurt.”
“I don’t need to be rescued, Ash!”
“Oh, so should I have just left you hanging there?”
“Pika! Pikapi!
Pika! Chu-u-u-u!” The Mouse Pokémon sent small sparks to both Ash and
Dawn, zapping them just enough for them to shut up. Taking the hint, Dawn and Ash both looked
away from each other and huffed.
“So...where are May and the others?” Ash finally
asked. Dawn rolled her eyes and
shrugged.
“I don’t know.
They took them away.”
Ash reached around and pulled a Pokéball from his
belt. “Come on, Gliscor. I need your help.” He released the large Fang
Scorp Pokémon from her ball. Gliscor
rose high into the trees before swooping back down and landing before Ash. “Gliscor, I need you to find Brock. Remember Brock? Go find him and come back and lead us to
him. Please, Gliscor?”
Pausing only to affectionately rub her face against his,
Gliscor obediently flapped away. Dawn
turned back to Ash and furrowed her brows.
“How did you manage to follow us without being seen?”
“After you spend nearly ten years being chased by Team
Rocket, eventually you learn to be mildly stealthy.” He rolled his eyes as Dawn
snorted. “Look, you only had to deal
with them in Sinnoh. I’ve dealt with
them my whole career as a Trainer. I
think this is the only time I’ve gone some place where they haven’t followed
me.”
“That you know of,” Dawn pointed out with a sneer. The fact that Ash had allowed Team Rocket to
pursue him and occasionally steal his Pokémon had always bugged her – well, it
was one of many things.
“Again, you’re welcome for saving you!” Ash threw his
hands in the air and shook his head.
Pikachu sighed dejectedly. “What
are you doing down here?”
Dawn pushed her hair out of her face and glared at him
from under her fringe. “It’s none of
your business. Where’s that bat?” She
stood, her knees wobbling horribly, and looked around for Gliscor. “Can it not fly any faster?”
Ash stood up as well and Pikachu leapt onto his
shoulder. “Dawn, why are you here?”
“I’m on a mission.
That’s right Ash: someone else is
important.”
For a moment, Ash looked positively dumbstruck. Dawn fought down her triumphant smirk and
stared him down. “Wow,” he said at
last. “You really haven’t changed at
all, have you?” He shook his head, almost in disappointment.
“Maybe we should just not talk until Gliscor gets back,”
Dawn hissed icily.
While it occurred to her that she had a chance to forgive
Ash – after all, he had just saved her from falling to her death and marriage
to a cannibal – her pride prevented her from even looking at him for the next
while. Petty as it was, he’d insulted
her too greatly for her to just...just let it go.
Occasionally they heard the distant shout of a cannibal
from the direction of the village. Ash
would reach for a Pokéball every time something rustled, for which Dawn was
grateful – though she’d never admit that.
Pikachu was constantly on alert, twitching his ears at the slightest
sound and preparing to attack. It was
funny, Dawn thought with an soft snort, how being without Piplup and her other
Pokémon made her feel more naked than her current attire.
“Are you ever going to tell me why you’re down here?”
“That’s what deathbeds are for.” There was a flapping of
wings and Pikachu sat up with an excited cry.
Dawn picked up the Teddiursa egg and checked to make sure it was still
safe, and then Gliscor burst through the trees looking excited.
“I guess we go that way,” Ash said as Gliscor turned and
headed back through the trees. They
quickly rushed after her, fighting their way through thick brush and praying
that they wouldn’t run into a stray cannibal.
It turned out Gliscor was able to fly a lot faster without
Dawn and Ash following. While it had
taken barely fifteen minutes for her to find the others and come back, it took
over an hour before she was able to lead them through the jungle. The sound of running water filled Dawn’s ears
and she let out a sigh of relief. They were near the river. May and the others had to be close by. As they cleared the trees and the river came
into view, she didn’t stop the shriek of joy and ran to the water’s edge. There they were: Brock, May and Max all slept
close to each other on the bank. Brock’s
Toxicroak was the only one awake and he looked up at them curiously as they
approached. Gliscor flew across the
river and prodded Brock’s shoulder. He
stirred and sat up with a jolt, letting out a surprised cry as he looked into
the face of the giant bat. May and Max jumped
awake at the sound and May let out a squeal at the sight of Gliscor.
“Go away!” she hollered, kicking dirt at it while
reaching for a Pokéball.
“It’s okay!” Ash yelled quickly. For a moment, everyone seemed to freeze. Three pairs of eyes slowly turned toward Ash
and Dawn and jaws dropped in shock.
“Ash!” Max grinned.
“You’re here!”
“And Dawn!”
The three scrambled to their feet and May quickly called
out Wartortle, who used Ice Beam to create a bridge for Ash and Dawn to cross
over. As soon as their feet touched
earth they were swept into tight hugs; Dawn could have sworn she blacked out
from lack of breath as May’s arms tightened around her.
“How did you find
us?” Max asked, then shook his head.
“Never mind that. What are you
doing here, Ash?”
“I’m here to save your butts,” he said with a casual
shrug. Dawn rolled her eyes, but May and
Max laughed. “The truth is, Professor
Oak sent me so that I could bring you guys back. He said you could get really hurt down
here. He wasn’t wrong.”
“He really wasn’t,” May said in concern. “Look at this.” She lifted up one side of
Brock’s shirt, exposing a large bandage on his ribs. “One of the cannibals got him.”
“I wish you hadn’t done that,” Brock muttered with a
blush, pushing his shirt back down. Dawn
gulped and fought hard as her body tried to shudder. “Ash, I’m glad you came.”
“Brock knew,” Dawn said, raising her eyebrows. “Yeah, Ash called ahead and told him not to
tell us.”
“Who cares?” May said.
“The point is that you’re both here and you’re both alive. Dawn...Dawn, we were planning to find the
village and attack in the morning. I
mean, it’s night and dark, and we have no idea where it is...”
“Well, Ash’s Sceptile kind-of destroyed it, so no worries
there. Do you...do you have my Pokémon?”
Brock nodded and knelt down next to his bag. He pulled out five Pokéballs and extended his
hand towards Dawn. “You...uh...you don’t
have any place for them, though...”
“Oh.” Flushing, Dawn crossed her arms over her chest and
tapped her foot against the ground.
“May, do you have spare clothes?”
“Sure.” She and Dawn rummaged through her bag and chose
some things for her to wear. While May
made sure that the guys didn’t look, Dawn hurriedly changed into them and threw
the Nenwe wedding clothes into the river.
“I never want to see those again,” she murmured. She tossed her Pokéballs into the air and
released all of her Pokémon, who immediately swarmed around her and showered
her with rubs and nuzzles. She began to
tear up as she felt them close around her; only a few hours ago she’d thought
that she’d never see them again.
“So...are we going home?” Max asked after everyone calmed
down. Dawn looked to the Teddiursa egg;
part of her wondered if it would ever hatch now. Lady Lalioné wouldn’t send transportation
down for a month, unless they were able to get back to town and call for
help. But doing that would be failing, and
Dawn wasn’t about to let her down. Not
now, not after surviving that ordeal with the Nenwe cannibals. That, and Ash’s recent arrival sparked a new
determination within her to finish this task.
“We should,” Brock said.
“It’s too risky to go on any further without guides. Besides, the Nenwe might come after us.”
“I’m going on,” Dawn blurted. May gasped in surprised and Ash rolled his
eyes.
“Why, because I’m here?
Dawn, don’t be so stubborn.”
Sparks flew from Pikachu’s cheeks warningly. Dawn bit back her reply and took a deep
breath. “It’s not because of you, Ash,”
she lied. “I don’t want to let this
woman down. She’s trusting me with this
egg. And this egg saved my life back
there. It saved our lives. Without it, who
knows what the Nenwe would have done to us?
I...I owe it to the Teddiursa. I
have to hatch it.”
There was a moment of silent after her short speech. They shuffled awkwardly in indecision; Dawn
straightened her back and set her jaw in determination. She wouldn’t back down to them. The only way they’d get her to go home with
an un-hatched egg would be to knock her out and drag her there.
“I...I guess I see where you’re coming from,” May
muttered. “But Dawn, so much has
happened already. It could just get
worse from here. And let’s face it, we
don’t even know where we are—”
“Well...we walk upriver,” Max interrupted. “And we camped near a waterfall, right? Just cross the river there, and it was pretty
much a straight line. And we could
always send out a Pokémon to fly above the tree line and spot the town.”
“Sending out Gliscor in the middle of the jungle was
risky enough,” Brock said with a shake of his head. “We haven’t seen any wild Pokémon yet, but if
they can get as big as rumours say that they can...well, I don’t know if we
should risk the lives of our Pokémon like that anymore. Sure, Gliscor has incredible vision and
hearing in the dark, but you know that those senses aren’t as powerful in the
day. If we lost sight of her in the
trees, anything could happen to her and we’d never know.”
“Yeah,” Ash said.
“I mean, I know I sent Gliscor out to find you guys, but it was really a
last resort. The last night I had her
out just for a moment and we were attacked.
Even having Pikachu out makes me nervous, and I’ve never really felt
that before.”
“Pika.” Pikachu
scratched behind his ear, looking almost guilty for Ash’s feelings. He crawled up onto Ash’s shoulder and
affectionately butted his head.
“We’ll work everything out in the morning. Right now, we all need rest. It’s been a long day.”
“We should move a bit upriver though,” May said. “We’re still in the exact spot the cannibals
left us. Since Ash destroyed their
village, they could be out for revenge.”
Agreeing, the others tiredly gathered what little
belongings they had and began to move upriver.
When they stopped, Dawn looked at her Poketch and saw that very little
time had passed; however, her legs felt heavy and she fell to her knees the moment
they stopped. “You okay?” Max asked
her. Dawn nodded and yawned. They had moved up the river a respectable
distance, enough so that the Nenwe would look around in confusion if they were
to arrive there.
“Is it my shift?” May asked with her hand on Blaziken’s Pokéball.
“I can keep going, if you want,” Brock said. May shook her head fervently.
“No, you need sleep. You’re the one who’s injured, after
all.”
“And you were sleeping when we showed up,” Ash
added. “Look, I’ll stay up if it helps.”
May looked ready to protest, but Dawn stopped paying
attention. She stretched out her body on
the ground, tucking her arm under her head, and shut her eyes to the world.
