Human Type Chap. 7 –
Pushed Away, Pull Away
"Justice without
force is powerless; force without justice is tyrannical."
Blaise Pascal
Crap...
My head is killing me again. Can't I just wake up once normally?
Ken winced as he adjusted his eyes to the bright light of the room,
and locked eyes with the brown furry face inches from his own. Eevee
stretched out her legs and licked her trainer's face lazily.
“Well hello there. Good morning. Or night? Shit, where am
I?”
He
sat up and brushed his Pokemon off of his lap. A quick glance at the
medical machines around his bed told him he was in a hospital. To
his side were a bouquet of flowers tied up with a balloon reading
“Happy Birthday”. How
long have I been asleep? My birthday's not for months.
“Oh, you're awake!” Vesta and Kendrick's uncle entered
the room together holding a bag of food from the hospital cafeteria.
Ken motioned to the balloon. “Where's my gift? And how long
have I been out?”
“Shut up! That was the only balloon they had! Maybe next time
I won't get you anything, jerk.”
“I don't know which is worse: You not getting me a birthday
gift or you threatening that there'll be a next time in the
hospital.”
“Ass!”
“I kid, I kid! I'm too hungry to complain about your evilness.
What'd you bring me?”
“The most evil thing I could, of course. Nothing. Nyah.”
Ken's uncle sat down in a chair beside the bed. “Really, you
were asleep. No extra food. Tough luck.”
Ken flopped back down on his bed and Eevee curled back up next to his
face. “Oh, thanks then. Damn it, what happened? How long was
I asleep?”
Vesta saw that Kendrick's uncle had started helping himself to one of
his seven tacos and decided to do the explaining. “You've been
asleep for a little over a day now. Your face was kinda' bruised,
but nothing serious they said. Biggest thing was exhaustion. They
took you off of fluids earlier today. I told you not to train so
much...”
Ken sat up rapidly at the realization, and Eevee stared at him,
disgruntled. “Shit, the tourney! What happened? If I've been
asleep a full day... What happened?!”
“Well, you were... disqualified. You technically were knocked
out. Plus, the second round started last night. You were asleep.”
“Fuck!” He laid back down, disheartened, and Eevee
resumed her slumber.
Ken's uncle was just finishing his third taco when he spoke up, mouth
full. “Man, these tacos were awesome. Good thing I got four
extra, just in case.” He threw the bag on Kendrick's lap. “Go
on, eat up.”
As he began to eat his meal, Vesta tried to console him. “Hey,
don't worry about it. I told you before it wasn't that important.
I'm just happy you're safe.”
Not
important? First guy they sent to find you tried to kill you, and
the second nearly killed me. I'd say it's important.
“Hey, Vesta. What happened after you got there? I don't
really remember anything after I passed out...”
“Nothing? Not even when we got done fighting?”
“No... Sorry. Was it important?”
“No! I mean, no. I was just wondering, that's all.”
“Okay... By the way, whose Ninetails was that?”
“Oh, um, that was Sera's. Yeah, she came down to help you out
with me.”
“Really? Wow, I didn't even know she was a trainer. So what
happened?”
“Well, it started after your first fight. There was a bunch of
panic about a guy walking around in the maze who had an unauthorized
Pokemon. You were in the lower tier of challengers, so second stage
evolutions weren't allowed. He was making his way to the end with a
Garchomp. Sera was asked by that guy who runs the thing, Locke, to
take care of the problem. I saw you getting close to the end and I
went with her.”
“Did you have to fight it?”
“Yeah. Me and Sera made a pretty good team actually, when I
think about it. We didn't actually win though. During the fight, we
did almost everything we could, but it still kept coming. It was
about to finish us off when... Well, I'm still not sure what
happened. I remember a Pokemon helping us out, but that's it. I
found out yesterday that it was Ace who helped me.”
“Ace, huh? And I take it he won or something?”
“Yeah, apparently. I actually met him yesterday. After I'd
changed back to normal, I mean!”
“Does it matter? Sera works for them, and she knows what you
are.”
“Well, I guess so...”
“Bah, don't worry about it. If you were in trouble, they
would've dealt with it by now, I'm sure. So what was this Ace guy
like?”
“Yeah, you're probably right. And Ace is totally cool!
Everything about him is so confident. When he came to see you he
introduced himself to me like some kind of gentleman. He kissed my
hand and everything! Quite a charmer.”
You've
got to be kidding me.
“Haha, you don't say.”
“Yeah, he's definitely amazing. You've really got to meet him.
He said he'd come back sometime today before you were released.
That's pretty great too, since we'll still get to meet him even
though you lost!”
You've
GOT to be kidding me.
“Alright then. I'll be here.”
Ken silently cursed himself as he finished his meal, and didn't
notice when Luxio entered his room. His friend made sure his
existence wouldn't remain unnoticed, and turned up his power as he
brushed against the metal frame under the bed. Eevee jumped up and
barked as Ken shouted. He glanced over the bed and saw the lion
waiting to be picked up, unable to because of his bandaging over his
legs.
“Hey man! I promise I didn't forget about you! I'm just as
beat up, so cut me some slack.”
Luxio growled playfully, and Vesta picked him up to hold. “He's
alright. His internal injury was just some bruising. His legs were
the real problem. He broke his right shoulder and bruised his left.
How did he get so hurt?”
“Oh, I forgot you weren't watching the battles. I got into one
with a guy named Dalen and managed to win somehow. I'm more
surprised Eevee here doesn't have a concussion...”
“Wow... Well she's fine. So, you almost ready to get out of
bed? We should probably go see Ace, so let's go!”
Again
with Ace? Fuck this.
“Actually, you know what, I'm still a bit tired. I'll stay
here and wait for him. You guys take Lux and Eevee home.”
“Oh... Well then never mind. I'll stay here and wait with
you.”
“No, don't. I'd just like to rest.”
“I'll be quiet then.”
“Look, can I have some time alone? Can you take my Pokemon and
feed them or something?”
Vesta was taken back by his reluctance. “Alright, fine then.
Take all the time you need!”
She held Luxio in one hand and picked up Eevee with the other as she
stormed out. Ken's uncle stood up to follow behind her. “Well,
I'll be going too. That Ace guy sure does impress people though,
doesn't he?”
“Shut up.” He rolled over and went back to sleep.
Kendrick was tightening up his shoelaces, about to leave the
hospital, when Ace made his promised visit. His initial appearance
was one of a man who was hiding something, but the more he watched
his movements Ken realized that he wasn't a bad person.
His hair was a creamy yellow like Vesta's, only his was more
dominantly yellow, and appeared to be in a ponytail long enough to
tuck in the back of his coat.. On either side of his face, two long
streaks of red hair dropped down to his chest. His body was cloaked
in a giant white duster, with nothing but brown-gloved hands and
boots showing. The ensemble, while eccentric, was more regal than
shady.
He reached out to shake Ken's hand, taking him by surprise that he
would act so normal. “You must be Kendrick. My name is Ace.
It's a pleasure to meet you.”
“Hi. Don't take this the wrong way, but do you have a real
name, Ace?”
“Ace isn't my real name?”
“Fine, Ace it is. Just a bit out there, in my opinion.”
“Oh, believe me, I know. However, it's the only name I ever
had, and I'm very attached to it. A long story... But I was hoping
you might like to hear it?”
“A story? What could be so important that you'd visit me at
the hospital to say?”
“Just a moment.” Ace went to the doorway and checked for
anybody nearby. Satisfied they were alone, he shut the door and
walked to the center of the room. “I understand you wanted to
meet me, to see if I was like Vesta. See for yourself.”
Dropping the duster from his body, Ace unfurled two massive wings on
his back to full extension. Underneath the coat, he was clad in a
sort of ornate breast plate, the same red and white as his hair. His
gloves rested on top of wrists wrapped in athletic tape. Without the
cover, Kendrick noticed just how long his hair was; reaching all the
way to the base of his spine. Wings outstretched, and hair at full
length, Ken recognized the creature.
“A Pidgeot... So it is true.”
“Yes. I've been genetically modified, same as her. My body
turned into a Pidgeot, and she an Arcanine.” Ace put his
duster back on. “And I'm sure you know by now there are others
like us.”
“Okay, I get it. You're different. What's the point of all
this?”
“Allow me to explain the situation you're in. Vesta is an EVO,
like me. I was one of the first generation's prototypes. My friend,
who is busy at the moment, was the other. We were the first of our
kind, and more specifically, I was the first. We were amazing
successes, and the whole first line of EVO's came out fine. Their
leader... He was one of the first.”
“Look, I really don't care too much about the history lesson.
What does this mean for her?”
“I'm getting to it. Once the EVO's rallied behind a leader and
became tired of being a scientist's plaything, things changed. They
took all the research and scientists on the project and made them
work to improve the effects. The first generation was perfect. The
second, they wanted more perfect. When they wouldn't listen to my
reasonings, Jet and I left. They were furious. Branded us traitors,
and vowed to make us pay. Over time, they realized we weren't a
threat and gave up.”
“Wait a second, who's Jet?”
“Oh, my friend. He had the fortune to become a Blastoise.
Anyways, when we left, that's when we gave ourselves names. It was
our final way of separating ourselves from that old life. When I
left, the second generation was completed, and the third generation
was in production. This second generation is where Vesta comes in.”
“Yeah, she was one of the second gen prototypes, I heard all
about that already.”
“But do you know what that means? The goal of the second
generation was to be an evolution of the newly created species. They
were to retain the ability to be both Pokemon and human, while
becoming stronger than the first group. It soon proved impossible.
Only one member of the second generation survived: Prototype 2.2.
Vesta is the only surviving member of the group, and with her, lies
the ability to perfect their formula. They want it back.”
“So that's it. That's what they want with her. And the third
generation? What's special about them?”
“I wouldn't know for sure who they are, but I know what the
goal was. They were to be the testing group for perfecting the
bonding agent in the serum. If successful, it would be possible to
increase survival when injected. Consider it a younger group of the
first generation.”
“Okay then. Thank you for telling me this then. We'll be sure
to be careful.”
“Careful? You aren't really expecting to keep on as her
escort? They can not have her back. I won't let that
happen.”
“Hold
on, are you trying to tell me you're taking
her from me? She's not some kind of property!”
“I didn't say she was. But you need to understand, I am
capable of keeping her safe. Not only that, I'm the same as her.
You can't fathom what it's like to be this different. We're
monsters. You can't care for her needs like I can.”
“I can care for her as much as she fucking needs! Look, I'm
glad you saved her before, but she's not a Pokemon for you to train.
She's not a monster either. I'm done here.”
As Kendrick left the room, Ace called out after him. “You
don't understand. I can keep her safe.”
Ken and Vesta were walking side by side through Jubilife, the streets
illuminated by neon signs and street lights.
Ken was still steaming over the conversation he'd had that afternoon.
“Hey, I talked to Ace.”
“Oh yeah? What'd you think of him?”
“You don't want me to answer that. He told me why they want
you so badly.”
“Yeah... He told me earlier today too. I can't really believe
it though. What could I possibly have that they want? That girl
Jazmine, she even called me defective. I don't get it.”
“He didn't mention anything about having talked to you before
visiting me. Did he say anything else?”
“What? Does it matter? He just told me about why they want
me, and what he is and stuff. Why?”
“Oh, it's nothing. Don't worry about it.”
“Heh,
okay then. By the way, where are we going? You still haven't told
me.”
“I figured that since we don't really have anything to worry
about right now, we'd go out for some fun. That okay with you?”
“What, like a date?” Vesta grinned at him and leaned in
close.
“No, more like a fun night for friends.” He grinned back
as he pushed her away again.
“Alright then! So what are we doing?”
“Well, I heard you going through my music back at my uncle's
house. I saw you... dancing.”
“Jackass! What gave you the right to spy on me?!”
“Haha, I wasn't spying. You left the door open, and I stopped
by to listen. It's my music, after all.”
“Damn it...”
“Well anyways, I noticed you liked the fast stuff. Trance and
Techno... All that jazz.”
“Well yeah... I just really like music.”
“Same as me, dork. So, I figured we'd check out a rave going
on tonight. I normally don't go to things like this, but I doubt
you've ever been. Should be fun!”
“A rave? Like, dark room and lots of lights? Awesome!”
Gah,
I'm exhausted. She's sure having fun though.
Ken was sitting in the back of the building, relaxing in the glow of
strobe lights and glowsticks moving around him. Vesta, finished with
dancing for the moment, came to sit next to him. After realizing
most of the girls around them were wearing fake Pokemon ears and
tails, Vesta had decided to let her traits show too.
He
smiled at her as he tried counting the rings of thin glowsticks she
had put around her neck and tail. “You're looking pretty!
More than normal, at least.” Sure
it's a compliment, but damn it's true.
She had modified another pair of Kendrick's sweatpants for the
night, and coupled with the red shirt Ken couldn't remember where she
got from, Vesta's slender body moved beautifully.
“Don't I?” She was still grinning as she sat down and
leaned against him. “Tonight was really fun.”
“Well, I mean, as long as we're here we can go to things like
this, right? No reason we couldn't do things every night.”
Her smile vanished from her face. “Ken, I've been meaning to
tell you something all night now.”
“Uh, sure? What is it?”
“When I was talking with Ace earlier... He asked me if I'd
stay with him.”
This
guy is really starting to piss me off.
“And?”
“And... I'm going to do it.”
Kendrick's
chest clinched tightly in pain. What?
What are you saying?
He stood up and pushed Vesta off of him. “What do you mean?”
“I'm going to take Ace's offer.”
“Why?! Is this because of that Talon guy? Vesta, I'll do
whatever it takes to keep you safe, you know that!”
“I know you would! But admit it, he's more capable of
something like this! And that's the thing... I need more than being
safe. I need someone who understands me.”
“So it's because he's a damn EVO?! Vesta, I won't lie, I don't
understand what it's like for you. But I want to! Just tell me what
you need, and I'll be there for you! At least give it a second
thought!”
“I don't want to always have to tell you! How can I be
comfortable if I'm always thinking about what I am?! Why don't you
understand that?!”
“Damn it, you don't have to! You're not some monster to me...
You're Vesta.”
“A monster?! See, that's the kind of thing I never want to
hear!”
“That's not what I meant!”
“Look, Ken... You're great to me. You've taken care of me for
a couple of weeks now... But I can't like you. I can't... fall in
love with you.”
“What? What the hell are you talking about?”
“I can't explain... I just need you to leave me alone.”
“You know, I should've known earlier. All this talk about how
amazing Ace is. You could've just told me you like him. You
could've just told me there was never a chance for you and me if
that's what you think. You could've just FUCKING told me that you
were going to take his offer before we did anything tonight. But you
didn't. No, you wanted tonight and tomorrow both your way.”
“What?! No! That's not why... I didn't say there wasn't a
chance for us! Maybe another time... I don't know...”
“Another time? I'm not going to be someone's fucking silver
medal. I want someone who's going to want me more than anyone in the
world, because I'd do the same for them.”
“No, you're not understanding!”
“No, you're not explaining! All you've told me is that you
can't be with me, and that you're going with Ace. Sounds like that's
about all I need to hear.”
“But I just can't tell you...”
“Then leave. Just go back to the house. I'm going to stay out
tonight, so just go.”
“Wh-”
“Just leave.”
The music and lights seemed to offset the tears pouring down her
face, but Ken didn't notice. He fixed his eyes on the wall away from
her to avoid all eye contact, fighting back his own anger and tears.
“I'm sorry...”
Vesta turned and ran outside, leaving Ken to sit alone, wondering
what had gone wrong. He threw his shirt over his face to shut out
the activity around him. Several minutes passed with him lost in
thought before a hand wrapped itself around his body in a sideways
embrace.
A familiar woman's voice spoke softly. “Still mad at her?”
He pulled his shirt down for a moment to see the woman, and was
surprised to see Sera holding him, dressed in a jean skirt and black
tee. Her long dirty blond hair was stringed out, a stark contrast
from how she wore it during her visits before. Didn't she have
brown hair before? I never really noticed, Vesta kept scaring her
off. She's actually really beautiful...
Kendrick pulled the shirt back over his head. “What are you
talking about?”
“Your adorable little fight. I heard most of it.”
“Why the hell are you still following me? My UGL experience is
over.”
“I'm not following you. This is my club. I live upstairs.”
“Really? You live upstairs at a place like this? Whatever.”
“Do I really seem so boring at work? It's all business there.
I'm actually a pretty fun girl.”
“Thrilling.”
“So, you didn't answer my question. Are you still mad at her,
or are you mad at yourself now?”
“It doesn't really matter. And if you really want to know,
it's probably none of your business.”
“Man, you're dense. Here I am, attractive and frisky, caring
for you in your time of need, and all you can do is hide underneath
this damn shirt.”
Ken pulled down his shirt again and stared back into Sera's eyes.
“Frisky? If I didn't know any better, I'd say you were hitting
on me.”
She laughed as she let go and rested her hands on her lap. “Hey,
now that's more like the you I stalked.”
“Whatever. Hey, don't take this the wrong way, but why exactly
do you care?”
“Well, the simple reason is that I think I like you. As for
why I'm here right now, it's because you just became very, very
single.”
“Why are you saying shit like that? It's not funny.”
“Whether you believe me or not, I'm being pretty honest. And,
I intend to bother you all night.”
“Look, I'm really not in the mood for talking to anybody, okay?
Sorry.”
“Alright, then I'll just sit here and keep you warm.”
She wrapped her arm around him the same way as when she had joined
him, holding his hand as she rested against his shoulder.
“What the hell are you doing now?”
“I thought you said you weren't talking.”
“You know what I meant.”
“I'm cuddling. Or are you ready to answer my question?”
“Alright, fine. You're nosy as hell. What do you think I
should be? Am I right to be mad?”
“Oh, you've got a right to be mad. But, you better not be mad
because of her decision. You only have a right to be mad at her
being so secretive. But, what do I know?”
“Sometimes I wonder how much you really do... You wouldn't
happen to know what she's hiding, would you?”
“Nah, sorry. I have no clue what she's so uptight about.”
“Of course not. Well, yeah, I'm mad at her. I think she's
wrong. Very wrong. But, I feel like an ass for snapping on her.”
“Which you are.”
“Gee, thanks. I know something's bothering her, so I should be
trying to help however I can, but damn it. Why should I care when
she doesn't want me to?”
“Then don't. At least, not tonight. You can be mad at her.
You won't feel mad tomorrow, but there's nothing wrong with being mad
tonight.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Look, I'm not going to lie to myself. You love her, in some
way or another. As much as I'd like to be that important to you, I
wouldn't feel right. That said, I still don't want to see you sad.”
“Why would you care about me? This sounds a little silly,
honestly.”
“Why do you care about her?”
“Because I just do. Shit, alright, I get your point.”
Sera let go of him and maneuvered on to Ken's lap, facing him, taking
both of his hands close to her chest. “So, since you
understand what I mean now, what do you plan on doing about it?”
Ken tried with all his might to fight back the blood rushing to his
lower body. “What are you talking about now?”
She smiled at him as his attempts failed. “I'm talking about
going up to my room with me.”
“You're amazing, and I'm not going to lie and say I wouldn't
like to... But I can't.”
Sera raised his hands over his head and locked her lips with Ken's.
As she pulled away, she wrapped his arms around her back. “I
know how you feel. But tonight, she's not here. And you're mine.”
“I'm going to regret this, huh?”
“Regret? You're never gonna' forget.”
They stood up and Sera led him through a door in the back. As they
headed up a staircase, Kendrick's mind wandered to how secret her
room seemed. The thought of what they were about to do started
thrilling him.
She opened her door, and pushed Ken into her house, shutting the door
with her foot. She walked him into the bedroom and threw him on his
back on her bed. He watched her as she crawled on all fours across
the mattress towards him, climbing over his body until their lips
touched again.
Kendrick leaned back, and Sera positioned herself on top of him,
grabbing onto his shoulders. With her chest pressed against his, he
felt her heart beating, seemingly in time with the dull thumping of
bass from downstairs. Without removing her tongue from his mouth,
Sera started pulling her t-shirt up to her head.
After quickly detaching to throw it to her side, she re-assumed
control of his lips. After realizing she had been wearing nothing
underneath her shirt, Ken's eyes lingered over her breasts as he
wrapped his arms around her bare torso. Stroking her back as the two
continued to kiss, the feel of her soft skin on his fingers increased
Kendrick's excitement every second.
Several minutes passed before either thought about stopping, and Sera
sat up straight on his lap. As Ken admired her beauty, she started
crawling backwards. Ken used the opportunity to fling his shirt off,
and Sera tugged on the waistband of his pants with her teeth.
Pulling them down, her hair brushed lightly against his exposed
member.
As she grabbed him at the base and slowly inserted his manhood into
her mouth, Ken had trouble sitting upright. Every touch from her
hands and tongue tickled him gently, and before he knew it, he was at
his limits.
Sensing his tension, Sera grabbed tightly around his shaft and looked
back into his eyes. “Nuh-uh, not yet.”
Ken focused all of his attention on holding back. “Oh, come
on... Please?”
Sera giggled as she climbed back on top of him before standing up.
He looked up at her as she stared at him, slowly undoing her shorts
and pulling them down from her waist. Ken leaned forward to help
pull them off completely and kissed softly on the front of her bright
pink panties. He returned the previous favor and grabbed them from
below with his teeth, dragging them below her ankles. Running his
hands up her thighs, he mimicked the kiss they shared before with her
exposed slit. She moaned and grabbed his head, forcing his face into
her.
He continued the pleasure until she couldn't contain her excitement
anymore, and her juices dripped over his chin. Her knees buckled and
she fell onto his lap again, moving her lips back to his. As she
enjoyed the taste of her own pleasure, Sera began sliding her hips
back and forth across Ken's member. They broke their embrace once
more, and Ken leaned back as Sera guided him into her.
Ken grabbed her breasts and massaged them gently as she started
bouncing on top of him. Her moans grew louder with each thrust, and
in Ken's haste to enjoy her, he started moving his hips up and down
to match her. As they reached their climax, she leaned back over
him, and he pulled playfully at her nipples with his mouth. Sera
came again, and the sensation of her body shaking around him sent
Kendrick over the edge.
With a mighty grunt, he filled her with his seed and she collapsed on
top of him. They stared at each other, panting from exhaustion, and
smiled.
Sera pulled at his hair. “See, that wasn't so bad, was it?”
He leaned in and kissed her again. “Not at all. It was a
little bit above average, even.”
She pulled harder at his hair and he winced in pain. “Average?
Well then, you wanna' make it above average?”
“Haha, what'd you have in mind?”
“I've got a surprise for you.”
“Oh, you're not a dude are you?!”
She laughed and pushed him against the bed to sit up. “No,
dumbass. It's a much better secret than that.”
“Well, what is it?”
“You were asking Dog-girl why she calls me a fox?”
“Yeah...”
“Well, it's because I am. A nine-tailed one, to be specific.”
Ken's mind raced as the realization washed over him. “Wait,
the Ninetails in the underground wasn't yours... It was
you?!”
She giggled at him again as she climbed off of the bed. “Yeah,
that's pretty much right.”
Wait, this is all too weird. She's another one of these EVO's?
“So wait, what are you about to do?!”
“Doggy style is so outplayed. I'm gonna' let you try out foxy
style...” She grinned at him with a single fang hanging over
her lip.
“Wait, you wanna'... do it... with you as a Ninetails?”
“It's not so different as before, I promise.”
“This is just all a little too weird for me...”
“Just relax. Oh, and just because I can't exactly speak,
doesn't mean I'm not enjoying it. Go ahead, and do what you want.”
“Wait, what?!”
A burst of white light blinded Kendrick, and he tried to shield his
eyes. When he opened them, a slightly larger than normal Ninetails
was looking at him with a gleam in its eyes. Sera jumped onto the
bed and turned her tails to Ken, lifting them to present herself.
As a fox, her seductive movements seemed exaggerated, and Ken stirred
up again despite his confusion. Wait! I mean, you're a Pokemon
now...
Sensing his hesitation, Sera turned around and licked the side of
Ken's face. Brushing her tails against his face, she resumed her
position and Ken made his decision.
“Fuck it! If you want to, here goes nothing. This is so
fucked up...”
He leaned over her body and shoved himself into her backside.
Surprised at how good it actually felt, Ken began pumping back and
forth into her, and Sera let out a tiny yip of pleasure. The more he
thrust, the more he began to love the new sensation.
Hot and sweaty, mating with an animal, Kendrick started losing
himself in the bestial nature of the act, and it excited him.
He started thrusting harder, eager to please them both, and his only
thought was to fuck her harder than she'd ever been before. With one
hand bracing himself up, his off hand absently drifted to her tails,
and he grabbed several, wild with the feel of Sera's fur against his
body. Startled by his action, she let out a loud bark and dug her
teeth into his hand. The sharp pain, added to everything else he
felt, sent him to his climax.
As he spilled into her for a second time, he rolled off to the side.
Sera, after licking up what was left, changed back to herself and
climbed on top of him.
She licked the side of his neck and nuzzled into it as the two
relaxed. “And you said you weren't sure you wanted to...”
It was sometime after noon before Kendrick made his way back to his
uncle's house. After spending the night with Sera, the two had gone
out for breakfast to discuss what his next step would be. Along with
heavy teasing about her being there when he changed his mind, she
reassured him that Vesta was the girl he wanted, and that if he found
something to do while waiting the time would pass quickly.
She
said Vesta felt the same way somewhere deep down, but she wasn't
going to follow it up yet. Sounds like a pipe dream to me, but what
other choice do I have? I'll leave her alone, and get my shit
straight. If I'm stronger, at the very least I'll force her to give
me another excuse.
His uncle opened the door before he got the chance to knock. “Ah,
Ken, there you are. I was just about to go find you. Got some good
news for you.”
He
led him through to the living room where Vesta was sitting. Against
the wall, staring intently at the news on TV, was Ace. What
the hell is here doing here?
Sitting Ken on the couch next to Vesta, the two made a point of not
making eye contact. Ken spoke to keep distracted. “Hey,
before you tell me what you wanted, I've got to tell you my newest
idea. I want to become an official trainer. I'm going to start
training and become as badass as I can be.”
Ken's uncle laughed as he lit a cigarette. “Really now? And
why is that?”
Ken stole a glance at Vesta before giving his answer. Vesta noticed.
“I'm not happy with how beat up I got. I'm embarrassed even.
I don't ever want to be that helpless again.”
“Helpless? You want to become a trainer solely so you don't
get your ass whooped?”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, people take classes all the time to learn how to protect
themselves. I thought you'd want to take the league challenge or
something. Hey, to each his own.”
“Damn it, you know what I meant!”
“Then say it. Tell me just how strong you want to be.”
“I want to be able to kick someone's ass if they try hurting
those close to me.”
“Haha, fine by me. I've already sent word to an old friend
you'll be stopping by for a visit next week. That's about how long
it'll take you to get there.”
“You already... Fine.”
“I've told you before, I know everything. Stop being
surprised.”
“Who is this guy I'm going to train with?”
“I never actually learned his name. I just met him a couple
times. He'll get you straightened out though.”
“Well, where is he? What kind of Pokemon does he have?”
“Oh, he's somewhere up in Mt. Coronet. And he's technically
not a trainer.”
“Somewhere? So let me get this straight. I'm going to meet
some guy, somewhere in a massive mountain range, sometime next week,
and I don't even know his name? Would you like to tell me he's
wearing some kind of clothing too?”
“Hey, he's a secretive guy. I will tell you one thing though.
When you find him, you'll know.”
“Well that's reassuring.”
Ace spoke up from his quiet focus. “Your uncle's telling the
truth. I've heard plenty about how good this guy is. He's some kind
of legend in some circles. He's had many students over the years.”
Kendrick silenced his objections. “Alright, I'll do it.”
After a long drag from his cigarette, Ken's uncle put it out and
looked back at him. “Fantastic. Now, for this training, he's
only going to make you stronger. Luxio and Eevee, they stay here.”
“What?! Why?”
“You need to learn to be stronger on your own. When you're
tougher, your Pokemon get tougher.”
“But I have to train them too! What good am I without them at
their best?!”
Ace finally pulled himself from the wall and came to stand in front
of Kendrick. “That's why I'm here. I know you might have
objections, but I want to offer my help. While you're gone, I would
be happy to train them like my own.”
First
Vesta, now Lux and Eevee? You better be as good as I've heard.
“What happened after you joined the fight against that Talons
guy?”
“I'm sorry?”
“What happened in that fight?”
“I separated him from you, Vesta, and the Ninetails. Once
alone with him... I beat him.”
“Beat him, huh?”
“Yes.”
“Alright, I'll take your offer, but on one condition.”
“What is it?”
“You won't train them like your own. You'll train them like
they're mine. My friends are tougher than you know, and they don't
stop fighting until they can't move.”
“Haha, we'll see.”
Kendrick's uncle spoke back up. “Alright then, it's all
settled. Ken, you leave tonight for Oreburgh. Ace will take Luxio
and Eevee with him. Better get yourself packed.”
As his uncle went outside with Ace, Ken was left alone with Vesta on
the couch. Knowing she'd been staring at him for some time, Kendrick
continued to feign ignorance.
After several minutes passed, Vesta broke the silence. “Ken,
listen, I'm not doing this because of Ace, I alread----”
“Hey, I'm sorry I snapped on you. You have your reasons, and I
should respect that. And I'm not doing this for you. I'm doing this
because it's something I want to do. When I come back, I'll figure
out what I'm going to do next in life, and if things have changed by
then you're more than welcome to come with me. Most importantly
though, I want you to remember that I still do like you. That hasn't
changed. And I still want you by my side.”
With
a hug goodbye, he got off the couch and walked towards his room. The
last thing I want is to hear her answer. At least this way, I can
still dream happy.
The wind had picked up and Kendrick adjusted his jacket.
Fuck
me. It's gotta' be almost 40 degrees out here.
He surveyed the rocky trail he was to take up the mountainside. A
heavy fog was rolling in from the north, and he could only see a
quarter of a mile up. After reaching for his belt to rub Luxio's
ball like he'd done so often before, he felt a twinge of dismay at
the feel of an empty slot.
“Well, fuck it. Let's get started.”
