“Release him, and step away.”
Trembling, Jade stepped back when the three extremely large men lowered V back onto his feet, and—with glazed eyes—backed away from the crazy violet haired mongrel.
“You heard him, fellas.” V grinned, patting the men on their thickly muscular chests. “Now, I know I got the goods that makes you want whisk me away, but my ass is literally OPP—that mean’s ‘other peoples property’ to you unschooled ones— so playing with you three might have been fun but never going ta happen.”
“Stop!” Jade hissed when one of the men surprisingly broke free of his control and shoved V against the wall and covered him from head to toe with his body. “Let him go and leave this place. Forget about him and me, and return from where you came from.”
Jade had to hug the wall to keep from being trampled as the men robotically moved to do his bidding. Jade gave a soft ‘umpfh’ when V slapped him hard on the back, and he stumbled a few steps forward.
“Dayum, boy! Having you with me rocks major hard balls!”
Jade glared at V. “Are you doing this on purpose? This is the tenth time I’ve had to take control of peoples minds to stop them from raping you.”
V grinned and shrugged. “What can I say? When you got the goods that make men—and women—scream; there’ll always be the need for crowd control, baby.”
The tall mongrel—despite Jade’s annoyance—was right. V hadn’t really done anything Jade hadn’t seen the mongrel do before, only that V poured on the charm thicker than Jade ever saw V do before.
The moment V had stopped their driver in the middle of Midas, V had taken Jade to a decked out apartment—who’s apartment it was, V only told him it was from an off world admirer of his that like to play at being his sugar daddy—and they’d changed out of their pet clothes to—lesser quality, but still expensive—clothing.
Out on the streets in their new ‘spuds’—as V called their classily suits—they began their quest to locate Rio in the most scandalous of places Jade never knew existed on Amoi. And so began the test of Jade’s speed of stopping V’s aggressive admirers.
Jade had feared he would be a hindrance, would get in the way if V got into a fight. Had been scared he’d cause more harm than good… However, after only two minutes of being in the ‘bad side’ of town, he stopped someone from kidnapping V. Then after that man had been sent on his way, Jade had stopped two other men from trying to drag V off into a darken ally.
The deeper they ventured into the less than ‘pretty’ side of the red light district, the more dangerous the people became. The time he had spent with Riki, Lilly, the twins and V in space, all of them had taught him how to fight. However, always being with someone, and being protected, Jade had never had to use his new skills. Even when they were on Rio’s planet and he’d been surrounded by killers, the others had taken the hits, shoving him in a corner so he wasn’t involved.
He’d used his gift only, to the point that he’d lost his voice. And on the planet where Gideon had found them and took them back to Amoi, Jade hadn’t fought, hadn’t lifted one fist in the all out rumble—as Fidget had called it—and had, again been protected by the others.
Jade looked down as his bloody knuckles. In less than twenty minutes he’d used his body just as much as his gift to keep V out of trouble…and he felt wonderful. Everyone had always made him feel as if he were apart of their group…but the way they protected him—even though Jade knew it was because he was Riki’s ‘rug rat’, and that was the reason why they babied him—Jade had never felt as if he were one of them.
He had tried to pull his weight. Had done everything he could to be useful, and at first he had, but when Jade had watched Fidget take all the hits when they’d been in that club, and when Fidget had gotten captured by Gideon because of his weakness, Jade began to feel like a weight around the rest of the group’s necks.
“I hope you’re not getting tired, kid. We got a lot of road to stomp down, and a shit load more faces to cave in before we find the dude who’ll have info on Rio.” V winked at him, those amazing amethyst colored eyes twinkling in the bright neon lights.
Could V be doing this on purpose? Jade wondered. The mongrel always seemed to never have a care in the world, but Jade knew how serious V could be. One drunken night on Rio’s planet, Jade had been outside watching the sky light up and the air thunder from mock bombs exploding in the night, Jade had jokingly asked V how it felt to be so beautiful.
The mongrel had patted him on the head and—with slurred words—told Jade that his face was his gift and his curse. V liked being so good looking, but his experience taught him that people only wanted to look at his face, and never would want to know his true self. Jade had been surprised at how lonely V had looked.
They never talked about what V said that night. Jade wasn’t sure if V even remembered. But, could V have picked up on his insecurity, and now that he was out from under Riki’s watchful eyes giving him the chance to prove his worthiness of being one of them?
“Yo, Jade!”
Startled, Jade blinked up at V. “Y-yes?”
V frowned at him. “You okay? You’re spacing off on me, dude.”
Jade grinned. “I’m fine.”
V shivered. “Kid… you’re giving me the ‘I wanna hug you’ vibes. Knock that shit off.”
Feeling embarrassed, because he did want to hug V, Jade shrugged. “I just feel happy all of a sudden. I’m having…fun.”
V smirked. “Yea? Good. Keep that feeling close to your chest, kid, ‘cause where I’m taking you, you’ll feel like killing me.”
Jade frowned. “Where are we going?”
Dusting the dirt off his tailored jacket, V straightening his silk tie, then did the same for Jade. Taking him by the arm, V lead Jade to the corner to peek down the rowdiest street they’d come across so far.
“You see that joint?” V pointed to a club where Jade gasped in embarrassment at the sight of men and women having sex in front of a large window. There was also the worry of the type of people at the entrance of the club. Jade gulped nosily.
“You’re not getting scared, are you?” V smiled down at him. “Boy, I saw how you had my back, and with those pipes of yours backed up with those fists, you got nothing to fear.”
Jade shook his head. “I don’t know…”
“Yo, I’m tellin’ ya, you got nuttin’ to worry about.” V gave him two thumbs up signs. “The moves you made had Riki painted all over it. You’re not as fit or street wise as your old man, but the grace of how you took those previous fools down shows how much of Riki is in your blood.”
V patted him hard on the back. “You just let me do all the talkin’ and if the shit hits the fan, then do what you have been doing.”
Jade nervously licked his lips. “O-okay. I can do it.”
“That’s the spirit! Now, you know how Riki always looks like he wants to rip everyone’s head off?” V asked, to which Jade nodded. “You think you can keep that kind of look on your face at all times?”
Jade tried, and after a few attempts, and V’s whistle of approval at his last try, did they stride out into the open.
“You’ll be pretending to be my bodyguard,” V whispered. “Don’t get freaked. They’ll be even more cautious, wondering why someone with my height and body type would have some shortly like you protecting them, and it’ll give you the edge you need.”
Jade stayed silent, keeping up his act, but his heart raced like crazy. And as they were stopped by the guards at the door, Jade sneered like he’d seen Riki do many times before, and cloaked himself with confidence he really didn’t feel. Walking past the large men, Jade couldn’t believe how the men stepped out of his way—how they turned their eyes away from his.
“Having fun yet, kid?” V grinned as a very voluptuous female came up and wrapped her arms around V’s waist.
Jade smiled, a twisted little upward turn of his lips he’d seen Riki do many times. He could do this. “Yea, I am.”

Picking up the clothing his mongrel had been wearing then he’d left his side off the floor, Orphe narrowed his eyes at the plush furnishings in the upscale Midas apartment.
“S-sir Zavi? Is t-there anyt-thing else I can do of you?”
Orphe glared at the shivering little man, the manger of the building. “Who lives here?”
“Um…” The man franticly flicked the papers on his clipboard up. “Ah… the apartment is owned by an off worlder by the name o-of G-Gorg C-inkins, s-sir.”
“I’ve never heard of him. Have you, Orphe?” Gideon softly said, standing at the doorway of the bedroom Orphe found Violet’s clothing.
“No, I have not,” Orphe replied.
“It seems your pet is a very resourceful young man,” Gideon commented as he fingered the clothing of his own pet folded neatly on the dresser.
“Too resourceful,” Orphe replied darkly. With Violet’s clothing clenched in his fist, Orphe pinned the sweaty, sniveling man, with a hard look. “I want all the contact information you have on this Cinkin man. As of today this apartment is no longer inhabitable. Pack everything up, and throw it out.”
“R-right away, S-sir Zavi, sir!” The man stammered as he bowed his way out the door.
“Orphe—“
“If you think to ridicule me for my lack of emotional control, stop now, Gideon,” Orphe hissed.
“On the contrary, I actually think you are being remarkably forgiving. I would not have stopped at throwing this man’s belongings away,” Gideon said. “If the tables had been turned, if Jade had been the one this man gave such favor to, then I wouldn’t not have been so gracious.”
Chuckling sinisterly, Orphe looked at Gideon. “Forgiving? There is a reason why I wanted all of this man’s contact information, Gideon. Violet is mine, and I do not like other people touching what is mine.”
With a look of approval from his Blondie brethren, Orphe took one last look around the richness of the bedroom before Gideon and he turned to leave. They had been warned by Iason not to interfere with what their mongrels were doing in the city.
They would obey their Syndicate Leader’s orders; there was no question that they would not. However, after Gideon and he had watched their pets leave Eos together, and after Orphe had tracked Violets movement and saw his mongrel had stopped, and been allowed entry in a place no pet would have been able to get past the front doors, he and Gideon had followed.
“Violet has much to answer for when he returns to my side,” Orphe said.
“Yes, he does if any harm comes to Jade,” Gideon replied.
“Considering the startling fact that the boy is Riki’s only living child. I believe my Violet will do everything humanly possible to protect Jade,” Orphe said as they exited the apartment. “With the knowledge that Violet would face the wrath of Riki should the boy be harmed, Violet would never take Jade anywhere too dangerous.”
oOoOoOo
“Silence!”
Unplugging his ears, V couldn’t stop grinning as he watched Jade beat the crap out of the guy who’d tried to escape their questioning. V had had his doubts when he’d insisted Jade come be his road tramp partner. But, having seen the disappointment in the boy’s eyes, when he heard he’d be going with Riki, had forced V to open his mouth and tell Riki he wanted Jade to watch his back.
Now, seeing how well the kid could kick ass, V could only laugh and clap at how perfect Jade had taken control of the out of control situation he had gotten them into—on purpose.
The little dove that had embraced him when they had entered the club, V had known full well who the little chippy was, and had anticipated the appearance of her owner the moment he hugged her back, patting her sweet firm ass as his greeting.
Sunny, the hard ass, fast tempered, sexier than fuck, club owner whom V had a tedious relationship with ever since he’d lifted the guy’s wallet and stolen the dude’s cool ride when he was thirteen. Ever since then the both of them had been at war. Even when V had been off world, they’d always seem to run in each other, and when they did their fists would fly.
Wincing, licking the blood off his split lip, V rolled his shoulders, and massaged his throbbing cheek. Bare from the waist up, having discarded his jacket, vest, shirt and tie so not to get them bloody, V propped his foot up in an up turned chair and grinned down at Sunny whom lay groaning on the red carpeted floor.
Behind him, V could hear Jade rounding up Sunny’s posse with laughable ease. “You gotta give me props, Sunny. My boy’s got some talent, right?”
V pulled back his fist and nailed Sunny in the face when he spit on his shoes. “Asshole, you know how much these loafers cost?”
Sunny glared at him. “Do you?”
V laughed. “You know I don’t pay for my shit.” Pulling Sunny to his feet, V shoved him down onto the gaudy black velvet sofa, and righted the chair he’d been using as a foot rest, V sat down.
“Who’s your bitch?” Sunny asked, jerking his head toward Jade.
V tsked. “I’d be careful with the name calling, Sunshine. If you haven’t already seen, my bodyguard’s got a nasty temper, and if you’re not nice he might make you do something I’ll enjoy seeing, but you not so much.”
“Everyone has been handled, and will not be a problem,” Jade said, coming up to stand at his side.
It took all of V’s control to keep his playboy smile on his face when he glanced up at Jade. Blood trailed down the kid’s temple, and from the corner of his mouth. There was also the beginning of a wicked bruise forming on the kid’s cheek that V knew would more than likely spread, and Jade would have black eye. However, V’s concern faded by Jade’s happy grin, and the glow around the boy.
“Who the fuck are you?” Sunny demanded to Jade.
“The son of Riki the Black,” Jade answered before V could stop him.
Sunny looked Jade up and down. “Shit…I should have know by the way you moved you were that mean son of a bitches kid, and even though your coloring is different, looking at you I can see the resemblance.”
“Yea well, you know who I am.” V fluttered his eyelashes, “and now you know who my boy is, so why don’t you answer the question I’d asked before you punched me in the face?”
V crossed his legs and rested his arms on the armrests of his plush chair as Sunny smoothed back his longish brown hair. V’s smile widened at the sun like tattoo scar around Sunny’s left eye seemed to whiten as Sunny glared at him.
“I know the fucker you’re looking for. Prick came into town a few days ago asking questions about the Tanagura Elites in a few of my clubs. The dude didn’t ask anything suspicious,” Sunny said. “But, anything that has to do with an Elite is bad news.”
“You don’t have to tell me twice,” V muttered. “Do you know where this punk went?”
“I can’t even give you this guy’s description. My boys tell me they see him, but he never looks the same. The face is, but this dude’s hair and eyes change color too fast for him to be taking Gazer.”
“Yea, that sounds like the man I’m searching for. So, besides his freaky eye color changing talents that seem to also extend to his hair, have your little spies said anything about where he may be now?” V asked sweetly.
“Last I heard is this guy was making his way to Ceres territory.”
V tensed as one of Sunny’s goons rushed to his nemesis’s side, and whispered furiously into Sunny’s ear.
“What the hell have you got yourself into, V?” Sunny growled. “It seems two Blondies have been sighted in Midas, and questions have been asked about the both of you.”
V stood and grabbed his clothes. “Whoa, look at the time,” V said, glancing down at his watch-less wrist. “Gotta run, Sunshine. Thanks for the fun.”
“Damn it, Violet! Please tell me you haven’t gotten involved in shit that has to do with the Syndicate!”
With Jade’s assistance, V slipped his arms into his shirt, then jacket before answering Sunny. “Me? Nah. I would never do something so stupid.”
“This is just like you. Remember when I had to help your sorry ass escape that king’s harem?”
“Shh!” V jokingly covered Jade’s ears. “Don’t use the H word in front of the minor, Sun. Whatever it is you think I have done, I haven’t. I’m sure those Blondies were just looking for someone who fits my description, that’s all. Nothing to worry about.”
“No one looks like you, V. Shit… you high jacked some ship with academy pets, and the guy you’re looking for stole it from you, didn’t he?” Sunny said, grabbing V by the arm to stop him from leaving.
Slapping Sunny’s hand off his arm, V gave scared stud a charming smile. “Steal? I would never do something so…thug like. You insult me, Sunny.”
“No…no…you’re better than that, and a Blondie wouldn’t personally be coming after you. Those high lords would from the shadows. Fuck…”
V cringed when Sunny stared at him in horror.
“Fuck… the only way a Blondie would be after you is if you stole one of their pets, or if you were their fucking pet who’s escaped. And knowing you, you’d be the only fucker I know who’d have the skills and balls to be able to escape Eos.”
“V,” Jade worryingly whispered.
“And if I was some Blondie’s pet? What would you do?” V asked with a smile.
“Shit…” Sunny raked his fingers through his hair. “Whatever you need, man. Me and you have been throwing fists since I caught you racing the streets with my car, in clothes you paid for with my credit cards you’d stolen from my back pocket. We haven’t seen each other in a few years, but knowing I had a rival like you out there made me work my ass off to get to where I am now, so I could rub it in your face.”
V nudged Jade. “This is the kind of male bonding you’ll only discover out in the real world, Jade.” In seriousness, V looked at Sunny and asked, “You know anything about A series H nine, zero, three coded pet rings? Or, more importantly, how to remove them?”
“I know that only one has ever been created, and for the Chief Operations officer of Eos,” Sunny answered.
“So, I’ll take that as a no.” V sighed. “Well, old friend. As much as I’d like to shoot the shit with you, time is something I don’t have. Jade?” V gave Sunny a small wave good-bye. “Wipe their memories clean that if Orphe or Gideon decides to visit, they’ll get nothing out of Sunny and what we talked about.”
Rubbing his hip where his chip lay under his skin, V walked out of the busted up club so not to get seduced by Jade’s voice. Out on the street, V looked up to the rapidly darkening sky.
“It’s done…”
V pulled Jade under his arm. “Good work, kid. Didn’t know it got so late. We better get ourselves cleaned up before we head back to our jail cell.” For a second, V looked down the street heading away from Eos. Freedom was just within his grasp, and if he started running now…
“Just think,” Jade said, tugging V’s arm in the direction they needed to go, but not the way V wanted to go. “We get to do this tomorrow, and we’ll get to stay out the whole day and not just a few hours like today.”
“That’s if I don’t get killed by that monster of a Blondie you wanna play between the sheets with after seeing your face.” Sighing, V and Jade began their way back ‘home’.
oOoOoOo
Standing in front of the door of the man Katze believed to have some of the questions he needed, he curtly ordered Manon to leave him. His annoyance that Riki had taken off had cooled with every step, and every snide remark from Manon’s ungrateful lips.
The arrogant mongrel had forgotten all the horrors he had witnessed when he had ventured into the forbidden area of Guardian. Judd, having no other living heir to take over the management of Guardian, had pleaded with him to help Manon when the foolish boy—his mind having shut down to protect itself—lay pale in his bed, drooling, because he foolishly ventured where he shouldn’t have with Kirie.
With Manon out of his hair, Katze opened the door and stepped inside. The air in the room was musty and damp. Katze could see layers of dust coating the book selves, and he was amazed at the amount of books in the small room.
Kneeling, Katze ran his finger across the spines of the books neatly stacked on the shelves. Some were classics, and worth more than one man could dream of ever seeing in his life time.
“Who was this man?” Katze whispered. It was unheard of that a room would be left untouched for so long. Katze had a vague recollection of the deceased. When the information finally came to him this morning, after Raoul and he got out of bed, before he met with Riki on Iason’s balcony, Katze had read of the mongrel teacher, Latzen, and how he died. Katze remembered that fire because he had been in it. Five years of age, he should have forgotten it, and Katze didn’t remember what the man looked like, the memory of being hugged had stayed with him.
The memory of a woman crying as she whispered her affection for him, and the man gazing at him with pride… Katze sighed and chided at his stupidity, at his wishful thinking. Growing up in Guardian, children needed something, anything to keep themselves from falling asleep and never waking up, from willing themselves to die to escape the hollowness in their broken souls.
The memory of love was what he had made up to help fight the loneliness and despair.
About to stand, Katze paused and frowned when he noticed all the books besides the first five, the titles had been scratched cleverly off. Anyone who may have come in the room might not have seen it, but knowing how much the books were worth made Katze look closer, and to his shock the first letters in the first five titles had been repainted to shine brighter than the rest, and they spelled K-A-T-Z-E.
Taking the first book, Katze flipped through the pages, but found nothing hiding between the pages. Just as Katze was about to close the book he noticed a number written on the first page.
“Six…” Thumbing though the book once more carefully, Katze grabbed the next book when the first had no other clues.
“Twenty-four.” Brows furrowed, Katze looking in the other remaining three books. “Six, Twenty-four, thirty-one, seventy-two, five pm…”
The book in Katze’s had trembled. His birth date, and the time of his birth…
Fear and excitement filled Katze’s body as he stood, and after carefully putting the books on the bed, Katze began tearing the room apart. Ripping open dresser drawers, and destroying priceless books in hopes to see more of the masculine handwriting.
Breathing hard, Katze looked around the chaos he created, and in frustration kicked the tattered remains of what once use to be a desk chair out of his way. The strange hollow sound as the wood hit the wall had Katze knocking on the drywall until he located the sound again.
With one deep calming inhale and exhale, Katze took the leg of the chair he had kicked and with all his strength impaled it into the wall. Coughing, waving his hand to disperse the white dust, Katze peered into the hole he created.
Spying something, Katze grunted as he reached inside and tried to pull out the metal box within. With one last heave, Katze stumbled and fell. Hissing in pain, Katze righted himself and looked at his find.
Turning the heavy box around, Katze pursed his lips. There was no lock, no seams; no way to tell which way was the top or the bottom. The only thing on the box was a few strange symbols… “Wait… I know this…”
Katze brought the box closer to his face. “It’s a code.” Standing, Katze gathered the books and the box, and put them in the closest thing he could find to a bag. Holding his precious find in his arms, Katze recoded the lock on the door so no one be he could ever enter the room.
Setting off, Katze made his way as quickly as he could down the halls to find Riki and—if he had too—throw his black haired mongrel over his shoulder. Katze wanted to know what was in the box… he needed to know, because whatever it was, Katze knew in his heart it would change him completely from who he was now. And it was a change he felt he would welcome with open arms.
oOoOoOo
“They whisper that this room, there was a fire and one of the best teachers, and a female, died here. They were trapped and couldn’t escape.”
“Really?” Riki smiled at the group of kids. After his short talk with the brats, and after answering their questions, Riki has asked about the scorch marks. To his surprise the kids had answers to all his questions.
“Yea… It’s also whispered by the adult that was in the fire, that the man and woman had a son in this room and that’s why they rushed in to save everyone,” a little boy whispered.
“Mr. Surik has even said when he’s drunk, that the teacher’s son comes back here all the time.”
Riki leaned forward. “Do you guys know who this man is?”
Little heads shook no.
“But I heard Mr. Surik say when ever that ‘cold hearted, red haired devil’ comes, he runs and hides.”
“Red haired devil?” Riki mumbled. There was only one red haired devil the kids were talking about that Riki knew fit the picture. Katze. “So this teacher knowingly jumped into the fire to save his son, and the boy never knew it?” Riki muttered to himself. It had to be the case. Katze—despite being an ex-Furniture and the black market boss, was a mongrel.
If Katze had heard anything about this guy being his pop’s then he would have been all over this place to try and find out about him, or at least that’s what Riki would have done if he were in Katze’s shoes.
With the sound of the door opening, Riki straightened and studied the timid male who blinked at him in surprise. “You the teacher?” Riki demanded. “You’re late.”
“I’m sorry…I wanted to get picture books for the children…wait…who are you?” The small mousey looking man asked.
Riki was silent for a moment. Looking at all the children’s faces, Riki turned back to the teacher. “Someone you’ll be seeing a lot more of.” Smiling at the kids, Riki left the room and wandered the hallways until they began to look familiar.
“Nothing has changed…” Riki stopped and trailed his fingers down markings made in the pale yellow walls. Knife marks he remembered making the year before being kicked out of Guardian.
His feet got a life of its own as Riki began walking until he reached bared windows. Looking out, Riki frowned at the ‘playground’ and all the little kids sitting in groups. No one was playing or talking. They were all just huddling together like abused looking animals.
Determination in each step, Riki made his way to the door he knew was just a few feet ahead which would lead him to where the kids were. Kicking the door open when it proved to be locked, Riki stepped out into and glared up at the flickering lighting.
“Hey! What are you doing in here?!”
Stiffening at the voice shouting at him, Riki slowly turned and saw the familiar face of the man who had grinned evilly down at him, while beating him, when he was a kid. Riki’s eyes zoned in on the whip in the man’s hand.
“I fucking remember you…”
Memories of that whip coming down on him filled Riki, and for the first time since Iason got his hands on him, Riki felt the beast he’d thought to have disappeared rear its raging head.
Riki grinned, a flash of his teeth before taking a deadly step forward. “I remember you.”
