“Would you care to repeat your request?” Jared said to Riki in a quiet, dangerous voice.
“I wouldn’t call it a request, but more of an order,” replied Iason’s mongrel.
“Is that so?” Jared’s hand tightened around Dave’s arm, causing the young man to hiss softly in pain.
“Geez, man! Why are you taking your anger out on me? He’s the one who pissed you off; I’m just an innocent bystander!” Dave growled, trying to pry Jared’s fingers from his arm. “Let go! You’re cutting off the circulation! My father, Riadson, won’t be too happy to see evidence of you manhandling his son. I can tell you this: if you want my dad’s stocks, this is a bad way to suck up and get them from him.”
“Shut up, Rio.” The black-haired mongrel kept his eyes on Jared.
“Rio, is it?” Jared narrowed his gaze at the pale-green-eyed man who smiled brightly up at him. All complaints and indications that Jared’s hold on the man was paining him disappeared.
“Well, you couldn’t expect me to give you my real name—“Rio glared at Riki—“just because you asked. You’re a stranger, man, and well… you know… stranger danger and all that.”
“If you lied about your name, I can only assume you could be lying about other things as well,” Jared said. “Take for instance how your ‘father’ failed to contact my office with the verification that he will be selling us his shares.”
The young man laughed faintly. “I’m sure he just forgot. The old man has a busy schedule…”
Jared ignored the soft “moron” Riki uttered under his breath. “Then you wouldn’t mind coming with me—“
“That’s not going to happen,” Riki said firmly. “Like I said; he’s coming with me.”
“How, pray tell, are you going to take him from me?” Jared asked, stepping closer to the black-eyed mongrel. “Although, it would prove interesting to see you try.”
Orphe’s lovely pet squeezed between them. “Don’t mind Sir Iason Mink’s pet’s insulting manner. From my experience while being in his company, this is his normal personality.”
“A psychological malady which I am already aware of,” Jared tightly replied. However, to publicly insult him, regardless of insignificance of who the witnesses were to hear the mongrel’s brazen tone toward him, Jared could not allow such insult to go unpunished.
However, the mongrel was safe from his wrath because of who owned him; and a complaint to Sir Zavi about Riki’s behavior shockingly outside of Eos would undoubtedly be ignored, since the Blondie’s own pet accompanied the black-haired mongrel.
Which reminded him… “How exactly are you able to walk free? What is stopping me from calling security and having you dragged back to Eos?” and leaving him alone to interrogate his target of interest.
Again Orphe’s pet prettily intervened, “Riki’s master and my… benefactor have allowed us leave to entertain Mr. Riadson’s offspring, and keep him permanently entertained until such time as you’ve acquired your object of desire.”
Unfortunately Jared’s ‘object of desire’ was grinning from ear to ear while tugging expectantly with his arm, wanting his release from Jared’s grip. However, he did not want to let go. “You expect me to believe Sir Mink has sanctioned pets—whom should not have ever been allowed outside the safety of Eos, just to assist me in such a small task as this?”
The lovely violet-haired pet opened his mouth to respond, but Riki answered instead, “Does my face fucking look like I wanna be here? The only reason why I’m following Iason’s orders, and hanging out with this pretty bitch—“Orphe’s pet scandalously winked at Jared—“is because I get to come outside.”
The mongrel shoved the tall violet-haired pet out of his way. “And this is a ‘request’ from Iason that I’m not going to ignore. You got a fucking problem with it? Go talk to Iason, but I’m not leaving until that prick—“Riki pointed at Rio—“walks out of here with me.”
Beyond the disrespect, Jared marveled at the fearlessness the mongrel expressed. Anybody else talking to someone ranking as high as he did with such disregard would be signing their own death certificate, and yet Iason’s mongrel did it without thought or care.
Jared found himself at odds: keep the handsome young man captive until he discovered who he really was—he'd recognized him as the rude youth who’d bumped into him the last time he'd seen Riadson— keeping the handsome young man would be disobeying a seemingly direct order from Iason…
“Time's wasting here, Jared,” Riki growled. “Give him to me and finish whatever shit you need to do with Riadson, or piss Iason off. Take it from me, as if you didn’t already know this: Iason isn’t someone you wanna fucking piss off.”
Jared had had the misfortune of angering Iason once in his adolescence, and didn’t have the time or adequate resources to defend himself against the Syndicate leader’s attacks today. “If Riadson cannot be located, I will return for him,” warned Jared, releasing Rio.
oOoOoOo
When the Blondie stormed away, Riki glared at Rio who massaged his arm. “How fucking stupid can you be?! Why the hell didn’t you change hotels after shedding that Riadson disguise?”
The assassin’s shoulder’s hiked up. “You know how hard it is to get a reservation in this classy joint? I looked at other roach motels, but couldn’t give up the feel of sleeping on silk sheets. Do you know how long it’s been since I slept, let alone on sheets? Or a bed? Cut me some slack, man.”
“How the hell can you be an assassin to fuck up this much?” V said, slapping Rio upside the head.
“Enough of one to stab you between the ribs before you could stop me, if you smack me again.” Rio glared.
“Still a stupid move, especially when dealing with Blondies,” Riki chided. “What the hell is up with this stock shit Jared was blabbing about?”
“Good deal with passing along the information to us without getting the Blondie suspicious,” V praised.
“Well, I am a professional.” Rio grinned, fixing his sparkling cuff-linked sleeves. “And not selling the stocks to that lickable blonde was an error on my part, for thinking I could entrust this simple task to that buffoon associate of mine.”
“Who—“
“Let’s find a new location,” Riki said cutting V off while glowering at the people eyeing them. “You’re drawing too much attention, V, and I don’t want to be here if Jared decides to challenge my lie and come back.”
Rio smacked his lips. “Oh, that honey can come back for me, but the timing right now was all wrong. I got so much to do before I can play with him.”
Riki shared a look with V.
“Rio,” said V shaking his head. “The last fucking thing you wanna do is gain any kind of attention from a Blondie.”
Last night must have been a real eye-opener for V. There was a slight tone of despair in the mongrel’s tone, as if he finally realized there was no escape from Orphe’s hold. Now Riki had to make sure the knowledge didn’t break V… like it had with him.
“So how did you guys find me anyway?” Rio asked, snapping Riki’s attention back to the task at hand.
Riki glared at Rio, and jerked his head toward the door. “You gave me your card and you were with Jared in Eos, remember?” Riki hissed as they walked. “It wasn’t hard to find out your alias was hiding out at the Rei Blackstone resort, in uptown Midas. I thought it would be a good place to start tracking you down, not realizing your bitch ass would still be here.”
Rio held the door open. “Have you stayed here? They have the most amazing breakfast buffet, and—“
“And you almost got dragged away by Jared who would have discovered who you are, and why you’re really on Amoi,” Riki finished, stepping onto the sidewalk.
“Only because that dip-shit Chaz didn’t follow my orders, and sell the Blondie the shares like I ordered him to,” muttered Rio.
Riki slowly turned. “Chaz is here?”
“You’re working with Chaz?” V asked, outraged.
“Enough with the cold glares, sheesh,” Rio said, sliding away from Riki and V’s crowding bodies and walking away. “It was the best move I could make to gain control over the situation. I either team up with Chaz and work ‘together’, or have him run around unchecked.”
“Chaz is the one who shot me in the fucking neck with a dart, isn’t he?” Riki demanded, following Rio. I should have killed him when I had the chance. The things his gang had told him Chaz tried to do to him while he’d been sick, and crap that the fucker had sprouted when Riki met the prick for the first time; he should have twisted Chaz’s head off.
“Not one of his better moments, but yeah, he was.” Rio pissed Riki off with his carefree tone.
“I’m going to kill him,” Riki said, his hands fisted at his side.
“Chaz will probably get stabbed in the back with his own knife by one of his own people, or his lover. Maybe we can use him,” V said.
Riki did a double take when he looked over at V and saw not one, but four wallets in V’s hands. The violet-haired mongrel expertly went through all of the fat purses, removing everything of value before bumping the life-sentencing crime in the nearest incinerating waste basket, and pocketing the loot in less than a minute.
“Shit, V,” Riki muttered. “We haven’t been out of Eos for more than ten minutes, and you’ve already robbed four people.”
“Six,” V corrected, winking at him. “You were just too busy plotting Chaz’s death to notice.”
“Why would you need it?” Rio asked. “Don’t those Blondies of yours give you cash?”
“We don’t need cash,” Riki said, not bothering to explain further. All Riki had to do was allow a merchant to scan his retinas, and the bill would be paid for because he was registered as Iason’s pet. Riki could probably buy every single thing in Midas without putting a dent in Iason’s account.
But hell if he’d do it. He’d pay his own way.
“Fuck if I’d spend anything of his,” V growled. “I don’t need his money to pay for my own shit.”
Yeah, Orphe had done a number on V if the mongrel refused to rob the Blondie blind. All that money for the taking, and V not interested in getting his hands on it? Riki knew exactly how Violet felt.
“Technically, you’re not paying for it with your own money anyway,” Rio said as they crossed the street.
Riki chuckled as V stared at Rio like he was stupid.
“I found it,” replied V, “so it's mine.”
Rio rolled his eyes. “You stole it. I saw you lift the last sucker’s wallet.”
“And I worked hard doing it,” V said.
“Bullshit you did!” Rio exclaimed. “You hardly broke a sweat, so how can that be considered ‘work’?”
“I worked by enticing my target to walk closer to me with my winning smile, then I worked to slip his wallet from his back pocket without him realizing he’d been robbed.” V fanned his face with stolen credit cards.
“I’m in the wrong business…” Rio sighed. “If I didn’t respect people so much, I might have been a great thief…”
Riki snorted. “You kill people for money.”
“But I do it with love. That’s gotta count for something!” Rio said passionately.
“I’d start crushin’ on somethin’ new,” V said. “‘Cause from what I’ve seen, your love is cold, wet, and beats the shit out of you if you turn your back on it.”
“I love my women cold and wet, just as I get hot and heavy when my men roughly take me while my back is turned.” Rio grinned and shrugged. “I’m a sucker for punishment.”
“Stay here long enough and you will get all the punishment you want, especially if you keep fucking with Tanagura Elites,” Riki commented, stopping. “Now shut the hell up. We’re here.”
“Riki… I don’t think coming here is the best idea…” V whispered.
“Why?” Riki asked rolling his head towards V, taking his eyes off the workers removing a broken saloon window to install a new one. “Is there something you forgot to mention?”
Riki’s eyes narrowed when V laughed and scratched the back of his neck. “I may have left out a few minor details about bringing Jade here, getting into a brawl and trashing the place—“
“V! You son of a bitch!”
Riki watched as a bruised-up handsome guy came barreling out of the club.
“And that I know the owner of this trashed establishment,” V said before the guy who shouted grabbed V, and fisted his shirt by the throat.
“You know how much money I lost because of your stupid stunt last night? Plus, my books are being looked at by a fucking Blondie! A god-damned Blondie, V!” the stranger shouted.
Riki raised his brows at V, and he would have allowed the man to manhandle V if Rio hadn’t stepped behind the stranger, and tapped a wicked blade against the guy’s neck.
“I’d let my friend go, pal,” Rio said in deadly tone, “or you might lose your head.” Gone was Rio’s playful dumb-ass persona, and in its place was a hardened killer.
Riki was impressed.
“Seems like you have two choices,” Riki said. “Let my boy go, or learn to breathe from the hole my friend will make in your throat. What’s it gonna be?”
The stranger cursed. “Riki the Black. You brought Riki the Black to my house!” The man released V and threw his hands up in disgust. “I know we’ve had our differences, but I didn’t think you hated me!”
“I don’t hate you, Sunny.” V grinned, straightening his shirt. “And I didn’t bring Riki here, he brought me. We’re not here to cause any trouble.”
“Prove it,” Sunny growled. “Tell this asshole to get his fucking knife off my neck.”
Again Rio continued to impress Riki, when the assassin showed no reaction to the men coming to circle around them, with weapons. But Riki wasn’t in the mood for a brawl, or to get quietly lectured by Iason for fighting when he got back to Eos.
How Iason would know, Riki had yet to discover, but he had no doubt his Blondie would hear every detail.
“Back off of him Rio,” V said. “He’s a friend of mine, and to make up for last night, take these.” V held out his closed fist, and when Sunny finally reached out with his palm up, the mongrel dropped two sparkling cuff-links.
“Hey!” Rio shouted, sheathing his weapon and looking at his blingless wrists.
“And hopefully this will help with whatever damage V and my kid did to your place.” Riki flashed a hand full of credit cards.
“Hey!” V glared at Riki as he patted his now empty pockets. “Uncool, man. Seriously, uncool.”
Riki smirked at V. Looking at the man V called Sunny, Riki said in all seriousness, “I want the quietest table you have. No one is to bother us, and think real hard about what will happen to you if you decide to eavesdrop.”
Sunny took the credits from him. “What the fuck have you done, V?” the guy whispered. “Riki the Black’s partner is Iason Mink.”
“Really?” V gasped. “But he told me they were only friends!”
“Damn it, V!”
“Enough.” Irritated, Riki made his way to the entrance of the club. “The less you know the better. Now if you would show me that table I asked for, me and my friends have shit to talk about.”
In the dimly lit club, Riki waited until his eyes adjusted then did a quick sweep, locating every exit and how many customers there were.
“I have a VIP room I keep empty for customers who need absolute privacy,” Sunny said, coming up from behind him. “I can assure you that you’ll have the peace you need, without anyone listening in.”
Sunny led them away from the main floor and down a green carpeted hallway, and opened a curtained glass-paneled door. “I’ll have dinks brought to you. The room is soundproof, and on the table there’s a switch. Press it and it’ll scramble any listening devices thinking to silently join your conversation.”
“Shady.” Rio grinned, sliding into the small room, and flopping down on one of the four cushioned seats.
“Better be careful.” V grinned. “Someone might think you're doing something illegal with this soundproof room of yours.”
“Isn’t everyone?” Sunny said, returning V’s grin with one of his own before leaving.
Riki smiled. “This place is perfect.” Taking one of the seats circling a small round table, he pressed the button Sunny mentioned then leaned back. “Now, Rio, tell me everything from the beginning about why you’re here.”
oOoOoOo
“…why you’re here.”
Jupiter opened her eyes and smiled.
She now had a face to go with the threat against one of her children.
The device created a slightly annoying static buzzing in the back of her mind, but it had been nothing but child’s play to get around.
Jupiter had been tracking Riki’s three-person group since they had departed from the building, watching with her personal servants, waiting to see if the assassin did anything to harm Riki. However, her decision to terminate the strange off-worlder had been put on hold after she watched her Blondie’s reaction to the man.
“Jupiter?”
Below her floating form, Jupiter acknowledged her servant’s presence. “Has it been done?”
The servant bowed and said: “Yes. All of them have been given the ‘vaccine’ you replaced.”
“Good.” Jupiter tilted her translucent head, listening for a moment to the conversation Riki was having, and then said, “I have one more to add to my list. You must be quick, and silent when administering the shot.”
The plain-faced, pale servant blinked. “One more pet?”
Jupiter smiled. “One more potential candidate,” she corrected. “Go to this club, and get close to him. I want it done now.”
“Yes… Jupiter.”
