Disclaimer: I do not own Pokemon, nor the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
A/N: Ok so…I took a short hiatus*cough*8months*cough*. Life has been quite hectic. I actually wrote a good chunk of this chapter before I took a break, so I only had to expand upon it. I should be free enough to write the rest of this story over the Summer, if anyone still wants to read it. My main character has no dialogue in the chapter!
I’m gonna try to keep this chapter kind of short so I can get back into the swing of things.
-----------------------------------------------
Uxie exhaled deeply and relaxed for the first time in days. He was very tired, but despite all odds he was still free. The Knowledge Pokemon had already teleported Auren back into the safety of Acuity Cavern, but the boy still seemed to be in shock. Now that they were safe he could finally check in on the others. First, the members of his resistance group.
“Shaymin, can you hear me?” Uxie called out telepathically to the Sky Warrior. “Our battle is over.”
“Glad to hear your voice again, friend.” Uxie noted that Shaymin’s voice was deeper than usual.
“Considering you’re already in your Sky Forme I assume you’ve sent the others off?” Uxie said. He had already connected the dots.
“Yes, they’re gone.” Shaymin replied. “They were quite distraught about you sending them away. I think the damage to their pride is going to be a strong motivating force.”
“You spoke to Giratina before sending them through, right?” Uxie asked wearily.
“Of course. He and I discussed their stay in his world. He wasn’t too open to the idea until I told him a group was out to once again pull Palkia and Dialga into the normal world. After that he even agreed to help them train. Who knows how he will go about assisting them…I am almost frightened for their safety.” Shaymin momentarily felt the connection to Uxie go frigid.
“I’m sure he will be an incredibly useful asset to their training.” Uxie said, wondering what perils his pupils would soon face. “Will you be joining them as well?”
“I will.” Shaymin answered without hesitation. “But before I go would you mind filling me in on what happened? Was the human useful? Could he be the one who…”
“Without him I would be lost.” Uxie replied, cutting off the stream of questions. In an instant Uxie sent over all of his memories of the battle, which gave Shaymin a much better recollection of the previous fight than any words could have.
“Wow.” He responded. He was at a loss for words. The Psychic Trio had watched this particular human, this boy named Auren, since he was very young. They hadn’t interfered in his life and from what they had told Shaymin he seemed like a monster more than a hero. Seeing Uxie’s memories of battle though…the boy had really proven himself. How unfortunate that he had lost such a bond just as it was beginning to blossom. “I see.”
“Indeed. I owe the boy my life, it seems. I just wish there was more I could do. The bond he was forming was immensely strong. Stronger than any I’ve seen in many centuries…since the days of unity. Anyway, I’m going to see how the others fared. Good luck to you, and please take care of my children.” Uxie said before closing the link.
Uxie turned his attention southeast to Lake Valor. The battle was over there as well, and Azelf’s psychic presence was already gone. As expected, he had be captured. Uxie felt a moment of remorse for his friend, then tuned his psychic senses further east. The battle with Mesprit was still raging, but her power was waning. It was only a matter of time before she was captured. Uxie thought about teleporting to join the battle, but he didn’t think he would even be able to travel that distance. Even if he could he would only windup captured. He didn’t like to admit it, but two of the lake guardians being captured was better than all of them being captured. The machines that duplicated their crystals for the Red Chain worked slowly and on a per-Pokemon basis; having two instead of three would buy precious time to make future plans. Uxie turned his attention back to Auren. The resistance had lost a very strong asset in Tonitrus’ death, but there was another strong member to be gained…but only if he was willing.
---------------------------------------------------
The physics in the reverse world were almost impossible to understand. Nothing worked quite like it did in the normal world. Up could become down and time seemed to flow differently as well. Some ‘days’ seemed to go by much more quickly than others, and it was nearly impossible to tell between night and day. The world seemed to be in a permanent state of twilight.
Alandra wondered how long she had actually been training for. It felt like days - weeks even. Almost immediately upon entering the reverse world she and Mercury had been attacked by strange creatures. They weren’t like any Pokemon she had ever seen, but they seemed to share traits of Ghost Pokemon.
They came in a variety of shapes and sizes - some walked on two or four legs while others levitated - but they all held a few similarities as well. They were all the same grayish color, and they all had red spikes somewhere on their body. If they had feet their claws were always gold, and they always had golden half rings around their bodies. Their strength varied almost as much as their appearance.
Alandra sighed as she poked her head out of the cave she was currently using as shelter. She took in her surroundings before looking upward. She still wasn’t used to the strange way the ground curved inward and mirrored itself before abruptly ending in an infinite sky. That was something that held consistent in the reverse world. The geography would make for great landmarks if it wasn’t constantly shifting and changing. Alandra smiled as her only company joined her at the cave entrance. She hadn’t heard anything from Frank or Maylene since entering this strange world. She hoped they were both still alive.
[It seems we are safe…for now.] Mercury set down a small bundle of sticks as he connected to his mate’s mind. [Those creatures seem to have fallen back for the time being. Get some rest, my love. I will keep watch while you sleep]. The Blaziken blew a flame onto his small bundle of sticks, then sat down beside Alandra and pulled her into his side.
“What about you? You’re the one who has done most of the fighting. You need rest as badly as I do. Probably worse.” She responded. She could feel his weariness coming through their bond. They hadn’t gotten much rest since coming to this distorted world, and she could barely keep her eyes open. It was even harder to stay awake while resting against her always-warm mate.
[I’ll be fine. I cannot let any harm come to you, and I need you on your toes to help me in battle. I might be the fighter, but you come up with the best ideas for attack. Besides…] Mercury paused when he felt his mating bond go peaceful. He looked down to see that, despite her complaints, Alandra had fallen asleep. It momentarily filled the Blaze Pokemon with joy and pride to know the woman snuggled tightly into his side was his mate. He would die to protect her; staying up while she got some rest wouldn’t be a big deal.
That was the last thing Mercury thought before he too instantly fell asleep. Above him, in the shadows cast by the small fire, a gray creature dematerialized and traveled through the wall; it chuckled a bit as it left.
-------------------------------------------------
“Auren, we must talk about the future and how you will fit into it.” Uxie said. He had tried to address the grief stricken human multiple times, but it seemed fruitless. “I know what you are going though, but you have to get a grip.” There was still no response. Auren sat with his head between his knees, and was completely unresponsive. “Fine, if you will not speak, I will talk to another.” Uxie psychically pulled Abra’s ball out and released the small Psychic Pokemon. He looked at his trainer, and his slanted eyes were at an odd angle.
“I’m sorry that I could not protect your teammate, young Abra.” Uxie said. Abra looked up at the floating Pokemon and could feel regret coming off of him in waves as he continued “I gave all I had, and it simply wasn’t enough. Your trainer is really something else, but now I fear all is lost for him. I pulled you out because I was hoping seeing his other Pokemon would cause him to refocus a bit, but it seems in vain. He still doesn’t stir.”
“I failed as well.” Abra said, mirroring Uxie’s feelings of regret. “My ball was unlocked, I could have gotten out and tried to save her myself.” As Abra finished Uxie shook his head.
“No,” Uxie countered, “Then you too would have been lost. There was simply no time, even for one as gifted in the art of teleportation as yourself.” In a lighter setting the small Psi Pokemon would have been overjoyed to receive such a compliment from the legendary Knowledge Pokemon. The despair radiating from his trainer kept him from feeling any joy, however, and he turned his gaze back to the floor.
“Gifted? Perhaps. It made no difference, however. A slowpoke would have been as useful as me in this battle.” Abra responded, feeling ashamed of his inability to assist his trainer.
“You are wrong again. When I sent Auren away mid battle I placed him somewhere normal Pokemon cannot get to. The psychic barrier there prevents humans and Pokemon alike from entering the area without incredible power or privileges. As a member of the Lake Guardians I can go to and leave the area as I please. You, on the other hand, had to force yourself through that barrier. An impressive feat on its own. More impressive still is that you still managed to teleport Auren and Tonitrus with you, and you even put Tonitrus exactly where she needed to be. Do not doubt your own power, little one.” Uxie finished in a strong tone.
“Still. I am no longer useful. My trainer…Auren is distraught, and the Pokemon he loved is…gone. What use will he have for me now? I am no fighter.” Abra replied, still not understanding why the Uxie was speaking to him.
“Maybe not. May I ask you one question though, Bora?” Abra looked up once more as Uxie addressed him by the name Auren had given him.
“Of course.” Bora wasn’t one to be star struck, but he felt very odd speaking to a legendary Pokemon on such terms.
“As I said, your psychic power is extraordinary. I can tell that you are a very high level Pokemon. Yet, you are still an Abra. Why haven’t you evolved?” Uxie asked. The question caused the Psi Pokemon to squirm nervously a bit.
“Hmmm, that’s a long story…but I do not mind you knowing as much as I do.” Abra opened his mind for Uxie to search the memories for himself.
------------------------------------------------
A group of Psi Pokemon sat around a small fire. The group was primarily Kadabra, but there were a few Alakazam scattered around as well. However, there was only one Abra among the entire group.
“How does it feel to evolve?” The young Abra asked a nearby Alakazam.
“It is an interesting experience, little one. One day you will experience it as well. All in good time. For now you should rest. I remember when I was an Abra, and how much sleep my body required. Rest.” The Alakazam said. The fully evolved Psi Pokemon added a slight bit of hypnosis to his statement, and the young Abra drifted off to sleep.
He awoke to the sound of explosions. His psychic powers were still new, but he did his best to send out a psychic wave to attempt to get a grasp on the situation. He immediately noticed that there were very few Psychic signatures left, and another disappeared as he scanned. Abra panicked and lost his grip on his powers. He stood as the Alakazam from earlier came flying through the air and crashed into the ground near him. With great effort the Pokemon stood back up.
“Little one, you must flee!” It said before a Nidoking came crashing through the brush to hit it with a Horn Drill attack. The Alakazam’s broken body was thrown to the ground from the destructive attack. Seconds later a red beam hit its body and it disappeared. A man laughed as the ball disappeared out of his hand and into storage.
“That seems to be the last of them. Excellent haul. The priest was right about their location. We’re gonna make a killing.” The man said. A woman appeared beside him as well, and she was accompanied by a Nidoqueen. She looked around and caught sight of the small Abra.
“Oh? Looks like there is one more after all, but it’s an Abra. We were told to catch any Kadabra or Alakazam, but what about Abra?” She asked.
“Do what you want. Kill it for all I care. I don’t want the weak piece of crap.” The man responded. Abra was filled with fear. His entire pack had been beaten by Pokemon that should have been weak to Psychic attacks. The Nidoqueen was slowly advancing in his direction.
“Nidoqueen, do whatever you want to it. Eat it for all I care.” The woman said while flicking her wrist for emphasis. The female Drill Pokemon slowly walked towards the helpless Abra. He couldn’t focus his power; he couldn’t get away. He knew he was going to die, and somehow that thought brought peace to his mind. Right before the Nidoqueen reached him he disappeared with a loud ‘pop’.
“Woah, he just teleported!” The man said, clearly surprised. “He shouldn’t have been able to do that with that Trapinch the priest let us bother in the area.” The Pokemon in question dug itself out of the ground, and the man returned it to its Pokeball. “Oh well, no harm done. We didn’t need that worthless thing anyway. This job is finished. Let the priest know.”
------------------------------------------
The Abra woke with a start in an unfamiliar environment. He tried to get his bearings but his head was throbbing. He must have used way too much of his Psychic energy, and such an expenditure had destroyed his memory…possibly forever. All he could remember was that he was only free because he hadn’t evolved yet.
He tried to stand but he didn’t have the energy to push himself up beyond a sitting position. The small Psi Pokemon used the last of his energy to send out a psychic pulse, and he felt two presences nearby. He needed to get away, but his energy was completely gone. Despite his best efforts to stay awake his eyes closed and he lost consciousness.
He woke up feeling strangely warm. Abra opened his eyes to find he was next to a fire. His energy was still almost completely depleted, but he was able to move again and pushed himself up into a sitting position.
“Ah, you’re awake.” A voice called out from behind him. Abra quickly spun around to find a small human holding a bundle of sticks and staring at him from a distance. Abra’s first instinct was to teleport away, but right now he didn’t have the energy to use that move. He quickly calmed as he put the pieces together. “I don’t want to hurt you. Me and my Elekid found you unconscious and we decided to make sure you were alright before we continued on our journey. My name is Auren, and that is my Elekid.” The boy gestured to the other side of the fire where a small ball of yellow fur lay on a sleeping bag. The small Electric Pokemon sat up and nodded in his direction.
“So you’re not going to hurt me?” Abra asked. Auren cocked his head; to him Pokespeak was unintelligible.
“I can’t understand Pokemon, sorry. My Elekid won’t be able to tell you much either, unfortunately. She can’t speak.” The last part of Auren’s statement was said very quietly. Abra thought about this for a moment, then decided he might be able to communicate with the human the same way he communicated with his own kind.
“Can you hear my thoughts, human?” The Abra telepathically asked. Auren was clearly caught off guard for a moment.
“Woah, I can.” He responded. “I didn’t know you could do that.”
“I believe most Psychic types are capable of psychic communication. I am still quite tired though, so I can’t say I’ll be able to hold this link open for long. Why did you help me?” Abra asked the first question on his mind.
“I couldn’t just leave you out here. Elekid and I know we can’t save every Pokemon, but we wouldn’t be very considerate if we just left a suffering creature behind.” He answered as if it was obvious.
“I see.” Abra took a moment to consider his situation. He couldn’t remember anything about himself, but a thought at the back of his mind was haunting him and he couldn’t shake the feeling that something terrible had happened. “It seems I owe you a debt. May I ask you another favor, though?”
“Sure, I don’t mind helping you out. What do you need?” Auren walked over and dropped the sticks he had gathered for the fire, then he sat down beside his Pokemon.
“Would you take me with you? I can’t remember who I am or how I got here, but you seem like a good human and I’d rather like to leave this unfamiliar place.” Abra needed to finish this conversation quickly; his mental strength was waning.
“You want me to capture you?” Auren asked, surprised by the request. Abra nodded. “Just so you know, I’m on a gym circuit so there will be a lot of battling involved…though my Elekid takes care of most of that.”
“I do not mind the occasionally battle, but I’d prefer to rest most of the time. I can teleport you places in a pinch though, so I’m not completely worthless. I only have one condition that I wish for you to take in mind.” Abra said. He knew this was going to be the tricky part. “I do not want to evolve. I want to stay in this body instead of moving on to become a Kadabra. I do not know why…but I am terrified of evolving.”
“Well, that’s an interesting condition. I guess I can deal with that, though. You can train with Elekid to hone your Psychic moves, and occasionally you can practice your teleporting skills. I was trying to decide on how I wanted to quick travel, and your abilities will solve that problem perfectly.” Auren stood back up and walked to Abra’s side, and extended his hand. “Humans like to shake hands when they make a deal.”
Abra quickly scanned Auren’s thoughts to see what he was talking about, and then he extended his own small hand to grasp Auren’s. They shook hands, and Auren pulled out a Pokeball. “Get ready, this could be a little jarring.” Abra nodded before Auren pressed the button, engulfing Abra in a red light. He was pulled in and captured immediately. Seconds later, Auren released him. “Welcome to the team. I don’t make Elekid stay in her ball, and you’re welcome to stay out around the fire with us as well.”
“Thank you…but I think I prefer it…in the ball…it’s nice.” Abra’s mental voice was beginning to waver, his psychic energy was falling to empty. “Thank…you…Auren Cole…” Auren felt the light touch disappear as Abra fell asleep. He returned Abra to his ball, and went to rest himself.
----------------------------------------------
Uxie stopped going through the memory there, and looked at the Abra, Bora, that sat before him. “Did you ever realize why you are afraid to evolve?”
“No.” Bora responded. “I just know the very thought frightens me greatly. Sometime after I joined him Auren allowed me to see his past as well. In his mind I saw a pair of Drill Pokemon, and that memory caused me great discomfort. I do not know why, but something devastating must have happened to me that caused me to seal my memories away. Why, did you see beyond my meeting with Auren?”
“I did.” Uxie replied. The Knowledge Pokemon knew more about Bora than the Abra knew about himself, it seemed. “I will not disclose that information to you, though. Instead, I am going to present you with a very difficult choice.” He could tell the Bora was beginning to feel a bit nervous. His own past could finally be opened to him for the first time.
“What is this choice you speak of, mighty one?” Bora asked. The legendary Pokemon before him had the answers to questions he had asked for many years.
“Your trainer…no, your friend, is in dire need of your help. Auren once paid you a small favor by keeping you safe by a fire, and then paid you another one by letting you travel with him and letting you dictate the conditions. You know as well as I do that he is a good person. He has been mislead and has done quite a few evil deeds because of it, and now he seeks redemption for his actions. I would say he earned it today by protecting me at such a heavy cost, but he will not see it that way. He will feel like a failure.” Uxie said. Bora was beginning to see where this conversation was going.
“I can give you a chance to pay your debt to Auren in full, and to learn your own past. But you must make this choice. You have immense potential, and even as an Abra your power is impressive. The time has come for you to face your fear, though, and to meet your potential. You wear an everstone bracelet to keep you from evolving…one that Auren gave you to follow your wish of staying an Abra. You must choose whether or not to remove it. By doing so, you will immediately leave your current form behind. Your body has long since been ready to take the next step, and even the step after that.” Uxie paused to let Bora consider the option.
“If you evolve, you will not be as strong as Tonitrus was. However, you will most certainly be able to hold your own in the world. Your current abilities will magnify many times over. You have a strange level of power inside of you that is waiting to be freed. Let it out. Auren needs you now.” As Uxie finished speaking Bora turned to look at Auren. His head was still between his legs, and if he had any idea that the two were conversing he didn’t show it.
“When you put it like that…it’s not a choice at all.” Abra said as he tore the everstone off his wrist for the first time in almost a decade. As the bright light that accompanied evolution enveloped him Uxie smiled. He and Abra both knew of Auren’s encounter with the two trainers who used Nidoking and Nidoqueen. When his own memories became accessible he and Auren would have something else in common, and it would strengthen the bond between them even more.
---------------------------------------------------
“What is this? Where am I?” Bora asked. He was surrounded by the cosmos; hundreds of millions of stars were within his view. He felt power channeling into him faster than he could even comprehend it.
“This is your connection to the universe.” A deep voice answered him. It sounded so…familiar. In front of Bora a body began to materialize. After a moment the body became an Alakazam. “You are finally awake.”
“Awake? But I wasn’t asleep. I…I remember…I took off the everstone and then…”
“You awakened to your true power. You are evolving. Any moment now all of your memories will be open to you…as well as so many more.” As the Alakazam finished speaking his statement became reality.
For the first time since his mind had sealed away memories he remembered everything. He remembered the destruction of his pack. He remembered the Alakazam that was speaking to him now as his pack elder, and he remembered…the trainers who caused his pain. He also remembered things that he shouldn’t, and lives that were not his own.
“You now see all. We were all attacked. We quickly figured out we would have no chance of victory, but we also found we were unable to teleport. In desperation, I mentally compiled all of the memories and the strength of most of the members of our pack. I had read the mind of the male human who led the attack…and this fate was far better than the one that was in store for us if we were all captured. I would have liked to have seen his face when a large group of comatose Psychic types came out of his Pokeballs. Anyway, I took all of the compiled memories and strength and placed them in you, our youngest member, in hopes that you would grow strong and embody our proud group. I was not mistaken in that hope, it seems.” The Alakazam seemed to be slowly fading away as Bora’s new body began to materialize.
“We will be a part of you now. Your fate has become the fate of your clan. Fate is…a funny thing. I knew that by overcharging you with our abilities you would be able to break the block on our teleportation. I wouldn’t have ever guessed that you would end up with a trainer who had suffered a similar tragic event at the hands of the same evil trainers. This universe seems to be one of purpose…one must wonder if Arceus does have a hand in events.” Alakazam was now almost completely intangible.
“I will use the memories and abilities of our pack to fight the evil that is attempting to grip this world. Thank you for this power, and thank you for saving me. I will not let your final acts be in vain…father.” Bora said, watching as the Alakazam before him smiled and disappeared completely.
The stars faded back to a cave as Bora’s evolution ended. He was no longer standing; instead he was floating cross-legged with his eyes closed. In each hand he held a spoon.
“I knew it. When your evolution took longer than normal I knew you had transitioned directly through the body of a Kadabra and into an Alakazam to handle the power that was stored inside you. Let me see…” Uxie said as he scanned the Alakazam that now stood before him. “Oh my…you have surpassed even my expectations. Your psychic reserves are simply astounding.” The Knowledge Pokemon quickly scanned Bora’s recent memories…and came across so many more. “I see. Your pack leader melded all of their minds into one, and then put it inside of you. That explains the odd power that you exuded as an Abra. Well, how do you feel?”
“Incredible.” Bora focused an infinitely small amount of his power and teleported…all the way to Sunyshore City. “Amazing. I crossed the country so easily and so quickly. I wonder how far I could go…”
“Be careful testing yourself.” Uxie said, surprising Bora by teleporting equally as far by using the hole his Teleport had left behind. “You may end up inside of some object if you push to somewhere you’ve never been. Let’s go back.” The Knowledge and Psi Pokemon both teleported back to Acuity Cavern.
“Now, how are we going to snap Auren out of this?” Bora asked as he looked at his still unmoving trainer.
“Actually…I was hoping you would have an idea.” Uxie replied.
--------------------------------------------
“What the hell are these things?” Frank asked as he tried to catch his breath. “The floating ones are immune to fighting type moves so I guess they’re some kind of Ghost type, but I’ve never seen anything like them.” Frank had been fighting the same kind of monster as Alandra.
[I’m not sure. They’re really good for training our weaknesses, though.] Jug replied. [I bet Lucario and Blaziken are having trouble as well if they’re fighting the same enemies. We’re all fighting types after all.]
“The odd thing is that these things seem to attack in force, but no matter how tired we get we just barely win. It’s almost like we’re fighting for our lives…but we can’t actually lose. Could that be why Shaymin sent us here? Such radical training would definitely strengthen us.”
[I don’t know.] As Jug answered two bipedal versions of the strange ghost-like creatures charged him. He reached down and threw a wave of dirt at his attackers, and smirked as his Bulldoze attack caused both opponents to dissipate. [Another strange thing about these enemies. They don’t faint and leave bodies when they’re defeated. I am definitely gaining experience from defeating them, but they almost don’t seem real.]
“Well, asking questions won’t get us anywhere I guess. We’re here to train, and if nothing else this is damn good conditioning!” Frank grabbed the last enemy and suplexed it, causing it to disappear. “That seems to be all of them for now. Let’s take a break.”
Frank and Jug both took a moment to sit and fall into meditation. Unknown to either of them their meditative state was aided by a small, nearly invisible form of the enemy they had been fighting. After its job was done and the two were deep in their trance, it disappeared entirely. Things were progressing well. Some distance away Alandra and Mercury had already fallen asleep after a trying battle, and Maylene and Alistair shared a similar bit of downtime.
It was almost time to strike hard.
-----------------------------------------------
The Pokemon in the clearing woke again. It felt much better than it had before, but sleep was still tugging on its mind.
“I see you are awake once more. I’m glad to see you have almost recovered fully. Your type made it very difficult for me to heal you; you have been asleep for a very long time. Seasons have come and gone. What could you have done that made the creator damage you in such a way? Your physical form has been so badly damaged, and since your diet is unique it has been very difficult to get you nutrients. Rest once more, and when you awake you will be ready to leave my island - your own has been prepared.” the soft voice finished. As the Pokemon on the ground fell asleep once more it managed to get a view of its apparent savior. It couldn’t make out the exact form as its vision blurred, but it made note of the colors.
The resting Pokemon dreamed of pinks, blues, and yellows.
