Marcus frowned, changing his direction from the one Aisha, Orphe, and the others raced to. The alarm having have gone off the nearly the same time as the others, Marcus had assumed his mischievous mongrel would be with his mongrel crew.
Yet, after taking flight in his areocar Marcus had brought up Keita’s location, and saw his mongrel was nowhere near Riki or that of his twin, Aisha’s pet.
Reason told Marcus that Keita must have removed his armband, but the data told him his mongrel’s pet band had not been tampered with—that it hadn’t been removed, unlike those of the others.
There was also the timing. The alarm had sounded as the others, and if Riki was escaping, Keita wouldn’t have time to break his band and then join the others.
Keita’s signal blinked furiously on the holographic screen on the windshield, and bleeped in the southern end of Ceres. A section of mongrel territory his vehicle would not operate in. Marcus would have to land as close as possible, and venture on foot just to see if his mongrel was where his band indicated he was.
As if the controls had a mind of its own, the steering wheel turned sharply into Ceres, and sped straight into the forbidden area of Ceres. The areocar faltered, losing power as Marcus knew it would, but as if possessed the car lit up brighter than before, and raced faster than engineeringly possible.
What should have taken minutes, took only seconds before Marcus hovered directly above Keita’s location. Autopilot still off, the areocar continued as if it were, and moved to land in the middle of the street of the abandoned section of the city.
His concern for Ketia overruled his suspicions of the dysfunction of his car’s computer system, and once the car landed Marcus quickly exited and made his way into a dangerously unsafe, and unstable, building.
Marcus hesitated briefly when his vehicle’s headlights suddenly turned on, despite the adequate daylight from the late evening sun, and flooded the area with light, filling in the darken corners as if giving him a helping hand so nothing could hide from his sight.
Stepping through the broken wall, Marcus’s eyes widened. Blood painted the floor, a great deal of blood.
“Keita!” Marcus shouted, for once unconcerned about the dirt marring his white of his gloves, or outfit as Marcus lifted rotted beams of wood and remains of concrete walls, in his frantic search.
Two sets of foot prints were impressed into the dusty floor, until it looked as if one person—a larger man than Keita, from the size of the foot print—stood a distance away, while the body print and small pool of blood indicated Keita had sat on the floor, bleeding.
Marcus shouted Keita’s name again and again, until he spied a pair of feet sticking out from a place he would have never found, if he hadn’t ‘rearranged’ the interior’s rubble.
Lifting the notable man-made covering, shielding Keita’s full body from his sight, Marcus gasped at what was revealed. His beautiful pet’s lovely face, arms, and body covered in blood.
Marcus’s hands shook as he reached down and picked Keita up, alarmed at how chilled his skin felt, his paleness, and the bluish twinge on Keita’s lips.
Cradling the mongrel to his chest, Marcus tenderly bushed a coil of silver tipped, pale blue-hair off Keita’s forehead. “Who did this to you?” Marcus whispered, his voice shaking with rage.
Keita stirred in his arms. Storm gray eyes slowly opened. “Hey.” The mongrel yawned. “You go cheap and turn the heat off on me?”
Marcus felt weak with relief. The weight that had been pressing against his chest lifted. “What did you do!?” Marcus scolded. “I thought…”
Keita’s shivered. Marcus held back his worried lecture and set the mongrel to his feet, bracing him when Keita wobbled with weakness. Removing his coat, Marcus wrapped Keita in its warm thickness.
“Wow,” Keita said. “Letting me soil your digs, huh? Makes me wanna test how down and dirty you’re willing to get.” The wicked little mongrel wiggled his brows suggestively at Marcus.
Laughing, Marcus pulled Keita into his arms and hugged him. An involuntary shudder coursed through his frame. “When I saw you, I thought I had lost you.”
“I bleed easy. It’s just a scratch.” Keita’s voice was muffled, his face pressed against Marcus’s chest. “You’re not getting soft on me, are you Marco?”
Marcus caught Keita’s hand from groping him between the legs. “Maybe I am,” Marcus admitted. “I want you to always be with me, because I care. What say you to that?”
As he expected, the mongrel was quiet. Turning, Keita stumbled as he weakly walked away.

Jared stared at Rio behind a three-way mirror. Studying the young man held prisoner in Eos’s security containment room. The man had suspiciously woken fairly fast, considering Rio had been hit by one such as he.
He had felt the resistance of Rio’s shield when he’d thrown the punch, but it shouldn’t have dampened his strike. Jared had removed the assassin’s ring, and while it had a plainer design of an Elites signet armor, it did not have the engraved markings of approval.
Amoi made it may have been, but of the Black Market variety.
Jared knew enough of Iason’s underworld territory, to know his people did not sell technology of this caliber to just anyone. And to make matters concerning, the shield had been tampered with, just as the manipulated organisms had been.
The Syndicate paid a great deal to gather the greatest minds from all over the galaxy. Making sure their intelligence was for the benefit Jared’s race. A strategy that insured other worlds would always be three steps behind them, in everyway.
So who was this man to have the resources to acquire such pricy items, and the staff to change how it works, and to operate safely?
The door opened behind him.
“Sir, the Onyx Elite, Sir Jerico Ervic, has survived surgery,” his man announced. “The doctors have given an estimated two weeks till he is fully recovered. He’ll be fine, Sir.”
Fine wasn’t a word Jared would use to describe the situation the Onyx was in. “Have you located his Excellency yet?”
“Ah, no.” From the refection on the glass, Jared saw his man look at him in surprise, maybe because of the less than pleased tone he had used, at hearing that Jerico still lived. “I do not know where he is. There also seems to be a shortage of arms hands on the premises.”
“What of the other Seven?” Jared asked.
“It is the same, Sir. They have gone missing.”
“Then I suggest you go find them,” Jared hissed, finally taking his eyes off Rio to glare at his man over his shoulder. “Or is the assassination attempt of an Elite unworthy of your time?”
“No, Sir!” The guard quickly made his exit.
Sighing, Jared turned back to studying Rio. The young man stretched his arms above his head and yawned. Not something a condemned man would do.
It was Iason’s right to question Rio first, but Jared could not wait any longer. Opening the connecting door, Jared faced the young man.
“Well, well,” Rio said. “I had hoped I’d see you.”
“Have you done anything with Iason?” Jared asked. He’d heard everything that had transpired between Jerico and Rio, but there had been a note of insincerity in Rio’s voice that made Jared wonder.
“If I say I didn’t, will you let me go?” Rio smiled.
“I might,” Jared lied.
“Yeah well, I can’t lie and tell you I did do him harm. Let’s just say I orchestrated a series of events that took all your seats of power away, so I could shoot cans down in your garage.” Rio Shrugged. “What can I say? I love shootin’ cans.”
“Discharging a firearm by non-personal is a prisonable offence,” Jared stated
Rio scratched his cheek. “And shooting an Elite pointblank in the chest seventeen times, with hollow bullets isn’t?”
“Say no more,” Jared hissed, beginning to doubt Rio’s intelligence. The man could not be so stupid as to incriminate himself
Rio blinked at him. “Why? Isn’t that why I’m in here?”
“I cannot help you, if you continue damning yourself.” The first thing Jared had personally checked was to see if there were any video feed, of Rio shooting Jerico. He had breathed a confusing sigh of relief when he saw Jerico had turned all the cameras off.
Rio chuckled. “I’ve been damned for a long time, my lovely.”
Jared stared at Rio before saying, “Have you no care for your life?”
“Kinda.” Rio smiled. “The game is to see if you can kill me, without facing the consequences. My people know I’m here, so if the next time they see me, and my lungs fail to draw breath…Well, it’ll suck for you.”
“And who are you to warrant such importance?” Jared calmed a bit. If the boy had influence, then it would give Iason cause to hesitate before passing judgment.
Rio shrugged. “Not tellin’. Not unless I have to. But, I will tell you Iason and Riki weren’t the only ones I was sent to kill.”
“Yes, Sir Jerico—“
“Nah,” Rio laughed. “That fucker I did for free… Well, not really free since I robbed him for six million credits. Pretty good, right?”
“Such greed…”
Rio shrugged. “Some people collect pretty rocks. I collect money. It’s a very lucrative hobby. You’re a businessman. You should know where I’m coming from.”
“I, however, do not kill people to make a profit.” Although, more often than not, many of Jared’s business deals ended in someone taking their own life by jumping off a roof, or taking a bullet to the head.
Rio snickered. “You may not, but your people do. I asked around. Your kind has been using us assassins to make your troubles disappear for years.”
“Maybe,” Jared admitted. “However, as of now you are retired.” Rio didn’t know it yet, but he was his. The assassin would not need his skills ever again.
“Retired?” Rio tilted his head. “Yeah, I could. I have more than enough money to live fifty life-times on some tropical beach. But I plan to finish my last job before thinking about hanging up my gun.”
Last job? The man was being head in Eos’s holding cells. No one has ever escaped after being brought here. The young man did not think he’d just let him go to kill, did he? How foolish. “And who might that be?”
Rio leaned forward. “You.”
Jared had just enough time to leap from his chair, narrowly miss getting cut by the glass-like blades that suddenly appeared in Rio’s fists.
“Your boys did a shit job patting me down. Not smart considering I’d been hired to kill your Syndicate leader and his lover.” The assassin grinned.
“With my kind, you see, even if you strip us down—“Rio wiggled his eyebrows—“till we’re dancin’ around in our birthday suit, there’s still a ninety percent chance we’re armed. I gotta thank Sky the next time I see him. These beauties got pass your detectors with ease.”
“You were hired to kill me?” Jared growled. When he got his hands on him…
“You ask too many questions, and pissed off the wrong people, Jared. Remember George? The stupid prick whose stocks you wanted, and I sold you?” Rio asked, stalking him around the table.
“Well, your ‘inquires’ angered his very rich, and very well connected family.” Rio tsked at him. “They tried so hard to cover up George’s shame, and then you came along and all but announced that their efforts was wasted, and now were made aware to the public.
“They hired me to shut you up. But you just had to show up when I was offing Jerico.” Rio shook his head. “I had hoped to get you in bed first, having a bit o’ fun before ending our midday fuck fest by taking you down.”
The image of Rio in his bed intrigued Jared more than it should have, considering the man wanted to kill him. “Your plan failed.”
Rio hiked up a shoulder. “A small bump in the road, I assure you. Like George, and unlike you, I have a very well connected family. We have our problems, but they’ll come get me if I’m in a pinch.”
Jared stood tall. “You’re wrong. I do have a family—brothers, and a lot of them.”
The table no longer between them, Rio faced Jared. “I’ll be sure to send them my condolences.”
oOoOoO
Fire burned through Riki’s veins. The arm Rio stuck him with a needle, the injection site felt as if the assassin had branded him with lava. His mind raced—as if he’d downed handfuls of accelerants.
Why had Rio been here…? Questions were silently asked, but before his mind could come up with answers he jumped to the next.
His thoughts were cloudy. His memory spotty.
Riki tried to lift his arm, only to discover his wrists were restrained with leather bindings.
The loud noise of a ship’s engine roared, give him a headache. Riki probably would have lay there, taking deep breaths to try and calm his racing heart, if a weakened voice hadn’t shout out, turning his head.
Riki’s eyes widened, and in a rush everything came back to him.
Rio. The assassin betraying him, and Kirin.
From where he lay, Riki watched as two men fought to hold V down. They shouldn’t have been a match for V, but the violet-haired mongrel’s struggles were easily subdued. Seeing the strangers touch V as enough to royally piss Riki off, but it was the blood covering V’s hip, dripping down to the ground nearly snapped whatever sane thought he may have had left.
It wasn’t until a whisper of a whimper reached him, over the noise of the engines that had Riki seeing red. A man waved something under Lilly’s nose while he molested the pet.
Sky lay asleep, bound to a stretcher as well, and when men began wheeling the mongrel away, Riki strained against his restrains until the chain links connected to his leather bindings snapped.
Roaring with rage, Riki jumped up. A dozen men or so stared at him in surprise, allowing him to gain ground until he tackled the men taking Sky away. Every time his fist connected with a face, Riki grew calmer.
In the back of his mind he feared he’d lose complete control, and end up a mindless animal he had turned into before. But, this time when the wave of rage washed over him, he was himself. He could control his strength and still think past the anger, so when he spied a boot coming at his head, Riki caught it.
His hand around the guy’s ankle was wet, and sticky with blood. More from the three men he’d beaten the shit out of, than the flesh above his torn knuckles. Still straddling the guy he had been beating, Riki looked up at the man’s scared face, and slowly applied pressure until the dude began to scream, and Riki heard his bone snap in his grip.
“No!”
The sound of a gun cracked, and Riki hissed as fire sliced across his arm. Dropping the guy’s leg, Riki covered his wounded shoulder. Over his shoulder Riki saw V with his legs around a guy holding a smoking pistol, choking the fucker who shot him.
“Do not shoot him, you fools!”
Narrowing his gaze, Riki zeroed in on the man calling the shots.
“Kirin,” Riki growled. It was too noisy for Kirin to hear him, but the prick must have known he called his name, because he turned and stared at him.
And what Riki planned to do to him must have shown on his face, because the gun he’d yanked from one of his men’s hands, he pointed it at Riki.
Smiling, Riki slowly made his way to Sky, and released him from his restraints. “Wake up, Sky, I need you,” Riki said softly, and then slapped Sky hard on both cheeks. Still it took a bit of shaking to get the mongrel’s eyes to open half an inch.
“I…I’m up…” Sky mumbled, shutting his eyes.
Riki slapped him again.
“I’m up, damn it!” Sky said, with more awareness.
“I hope so,” said Riki, “because if you don’t get your ass up now, we’re going to be in serious deep shit with our Blondies, for getting kidnapped.”
“Kidnapped...?”
Riki dragged Sky from the stretcher, and the mongrel cursed him as his body slammed onto the hard ground. But, Riki’s attention was focused on the men coming their way. Flipping the stretcher to its side, Riki hid them behind it.
“Rio sold us to Kirin, and Kirin is trying to get us on his ship. I need you to do something so we don’t leave this planet.” If seeing Rio hadn’t been a hallucination, then Iason was on his way. He ring was gone, and he didn’t see Sky’s armband. Iason was coming. They just needed to hold on.
“Stupid smart bastard. I would have done the same,” Sky said rubbing his face. “It was a nicely done double cross.”
“Just do something, and fast!” Riki shoved Sky away as the first of Kirin’s men reached them. Standing, Riki grabbed the guy and dropped him fast with a blow to the stomach, just in time to block the second man’s punch.
Taken to the ground, Riki cried out when the heavy bastard on him scored a painful hit in the stomach. Grabbing his hand, Riki yanked it back, breaking his arm. Pulling the knife from his gut, Riki shoved the guy onto his back, and retuned the blade by embedding it in the man’s shoulder, impaling him to the cement floor.
But, when one went down, others replaced him until there were too many of them and Riki took more hits than he gave. Despite the odds, Riki fought on, and when the last asshole was knocked out, he looked around him. From the eye that wasn’t blinded by his own blood, Riki saw V fighting off a couple goons, until Lilly shakily stood, and everyone around him dropped like stones.
Bleeding in more places than Riki wanted to think about. His hand holding his guts in, he stumbled his way to Kirin.
“Stay back!” Kirin shouted, and Riki listened. The guy’s eyes were wild and crazy.
“Not what you were expecting, huh?” Riki said, spitting a mouth full of blood to the ground. “You’re done.”
“No,” Kirin sneered. “Not all is lost. You’ll get on the ship or I’ll have your friends killed.”
Riki growled as the last of Kirin’s men dragged V and Lilly forward. V gave Riki a bloody sickly smile, while Lilly was held up by two goons. The pet’s head rolled on his shoulders, and Riki saw blood trailing down his face from a nasty wound at his temple.
Too far to do anything to help them, Riki’s hands were tied. “If you want me, then fucking come and get me.”
Whatever his appearance may have looked like now, when Kirin looked at him he didn’t have the same fear as before, and fell for his taunts by walking towards him.
“I paid a lot of money to have you,” Kirin said stopping a couple feet away from Riki. “And your little show of strength isn’t going to stop me from having you.”
Coughing out a painful laugh, Riki shook his head. “You were ripped off, motherfucker, and you’re too stupid to realize it.” Riki held up his ring-less hand. “Pet rings emit an alarm if they are forcefully removed, asshole.”
Kirin stared at him. “No, I was assured that—“
“By who?” Riki grinned, wincing when the cut on his lip split wider. “I’d get my money back, if I were you because you got played.”
“No! I—“
Riki and Kirin turned when cars screeched to a halt around them, and shiny areocars landed.
“This is going to suck for you, Kirin,” Riki said, giving the guy a pitying glance when Iason merged from one of the vehicles, in all his Blondie god-like perfection.
Kirin quickly got behind Riki and jabbed him in the spine with his gun. “I still have time to get you on my ship—“
Riki and everyone else ducked as fifty feet away a small spacecraft exploded. Shielding his eyes with his arm, Riki laughed when he saw Sky drove towards them in a small cart, and what looked a smoking rocket launcher fastened in the passenger seat next to him.
Tanagura and Eos security swarmed the place, but it was Mikhale and Orphe that disarmed the men guarding V and Lilly. Riki grinned when Sky drove up to a clearly relieved Aisha.
“Looks like you’re not going anywhere, Kirin,” Riki said, and smiled at Iason. His Blondie’s face was expressionless, but those icy-blue eyes had murder in their beautiful orbs, and they were looking straight at Kirin. “I’d give myself up, if I were you.”
“Let me go, or I’ll kill him!” Kirin shouted, grabbing a fist full of Riki’s hair, yanking his head back.
Riki hissed. “You’re just making matters worse. He’ll keep you alive now where you could have been granted a quick death.” Riki was pulling the guy’s leg, but when he looked at Iason’s face…
“Come any closer and I’ll shoot him! I’ve got Sixzilon poison tipped bullets in this gun!” Kirin shouted. “I just need to wing him and he’ll be screaming with indescribable pain, until he’s begging you to kill him!”
Iason took a step towards Kirin, freaking the slimy little bastard out. Kirin tripped over his feet back pedaling away, taking Riki down with him. In the fall the gun went off, and Riki gasped as something tore into his back.
Iason was there in an instant, pulling him away from Kirin.
“Riki.”
Panting, Riki tugged on a lock of Iason’s hair, dying it with his blood. “About time you got here, big man. Rio actually did something right, although I still plan to kick his ass next time I see him,” he gasped.
“This Rio will have much to explain,” Iason smiled.
Riki frowned. The pain in his back began to spread. Breathing hard Riki gripped Iason’s forearms, and bit his lips. Something was wrong.
“Help is coming, Riki,” Iason whispered, kissing his forehead.
“The pain,” Riki said through clenched teeth. What had Kirin said? Something about poisoned tipped bullets?
"Hold on, Riki.”
Hearing the concern in Iason’s voice, Riki tried to keep it to himself but in seconds the agony mounted rapidly, and he could no longer contain it. Pushing away from Iason, falling to his hands and knees, Riki screamed. The injection Rio gave him keeping him awake, denying him the bliss of passing out from the indescribable pain.
Shaking, feeling as if his head were about to split open, Riki heard V, Lilly and Sky crying out just as he was. Though watery eyes, he saw his three comrades drop one by one.

Jared moved to dodge Rio’s attack, only to watch as the assassin crashed against the side of the room. His crystal blades stabbing the wall, in what Jared believed to be an effort to hold his body up.
Unable to make sense of Rio’s actions, Jared stood there until the blonde’s back arched, and when his head snapped back, a tormented howl erupted from deep within his throat.

High up in her inner sanctum, Jupiter wailed in agony; her high-pitched shrieks shattering every window in the dome room. Her curled up translucent body flickered as, for the first time in her long life, she experienced what true physical pain felt like.
In an attempt to end her torment, Jupiter dropped her safeguards, and shut herself down.
