Revenge of the Angels

Chapter 1
"Angels Don't Kill."

A rare sight to be seen away from his humble abode. Hands placed into his pockets as he walked through Tokyo-3. It took the United Nations, NERV and even the Japanese Government to rebuild Tokyo-3 like it was. His eyes slowly moving from person to person, studying them as if they were animals ready to be tested upon. A look of wonder upon his old face.
The brown eyes stared up into the sky, a genuine smile passed his somewhat dry lips. He didn't often come here; into the city streets - always pushing and moving were the cattle of the city. He couldn't be like that, constantly wanting to be somewhere or wanting to belong... Not anymore.
"Dear?" A voice reached out to him, wanting to snatch up his attention - a soft tug on his arm did not help him to break out of daydream. But he simply continued to be silent his eyes drawn into himself, looking down at his black uniform, running a hand up through his messy mane of brown hair.
"... Dear?" The voice was slightly louder.
He looked down to his polished back shoes as he scratched his rigid hairless chin.
"Ikari?" The voice had somewhat a tense tone, as if the person grew agitated by being ignored.
He looked across the road, staring out as he watched a girl walked to another accidently, the girl dropped her bags all over the floor. Mentally he flinched as the person who walked into the female, continued to walk away rudely.
Then he felt a sudden jab into his side that caused a sudden loss of breath. Shinji held his side as he stopped to bend over from being winded. "... What was that for?!" His voice yelled out at his female companion through small pants. "That… That hurt!" He rubbed his side, regaining his breath, and watched his lover walk off ahead a little... Or rather stormed off with child in hand.
The long red haired, pony-tailed, blue eyed partner glared at him most disapprovingly. "Listen dumbkoft!" She glared with her those fierce blue eyes, something he came to love about her. She clenched her right fist while the young boy held his mother's other hand, skulking behind her leg from the two arguing.
"Sorry, but i have other things on my mind. I didn't mean to ignore you Asuka," His voice was almost sorry, 'It would be nice if I was deaf.' He thought with a small goofy grin.
Asuka instantly shuddered at that grin, it always gave her the shivers and it always did reminded her of his father… Asuka shook her head and looked to the semi-short red haired boy. "Sorry what were you saying, hun? Daddy is listening now…" She side glanced Shinji.
Shinji noticed the shudder and the grin suddenly disappeared as he stood up straight, looking like his father or even more so as he placed his hands in his pockets.
Shinji grew up to look like his father. Actually, the similarities between Gendo and Shinji were more than it seemed. Except Shinji tried not to look so much like him. His face was cleanly shaved, he did not wear glasses - he didn't need too, and he never tried to grin. It reminded Asuka of the now proclaimed “Angel War.” Now he listened to his son, smiling to him… Something his father never did to him. To listen and to care. “Sorry son, go on…”
"There was this other boy and - AND he looked at me funny..." The voice sounded so much like Shinji when he was younger, but full of excitement and emotion just like Asuka's. He even looked like Shinji, well just the face, the rest of his son was like his mother. Fiery, outgoing, but retained Shinji’s compassion.
Shinji watched his son with a soft smile, as he listened to his story of what happened to him in school yesterday, while listening to Asuka agreeing enthusiastically as she could... Asuka was a great mother to his child, and he could ask nothing more from her.
The boy continued: "... And so then I punched him!"
Shinji shook his head, "I wonder where he gets that bad habit from," He mumbled, but was quickly silenced from any other remark, by another jab in the side. “Argh… Why me…”

Shinji groaned as he leant back in the leather chair in the Commander's Office. His hands behind his back as he stared up at the ceiling, feet upon his father‘s old desk. He could never break habit. He listened to his walkman while he wrote the reports and papers on occasions to break away from the real world… Just for that short moment.
"Commander Ikari?" A voice interrupted his stare at the ceiling and to the figure that stood in front of his desk. He removed the walkman’s headphones, and pressed the stop button. "Kensuke?"
Kensuke was dressed much like the commander. Kensuke pushed his glasses back up his nose and smiled somewhat as he dumped another mile-high paper mound onto his desk. "I just received these. I have filled them out, now they just need your signature."
Shinji now moving his hands to the mound of paper, he took the top sheet and read it to himself silently. "On all of them?" He sighed the words as he dropped the paper onto his desk with a heavy hand, and resumed the position of leaning back into his chair, and placing his hands behind his head. Staring at the ceiling.
Kensuke nodded with a growing smirk. "Sadly, yes."
"Can the Major do it?" Shinji yawned as he closed his eyes.
Kensuke quickly smiled, "Her exact words were something like: ‘I'am not authorised to sign these papers, Sub-Commander Aida.' " Kensuke forced a montoned voice when imitating Ayanami Rei.
Commander Ikari opened his eyes somewhat. 'She never did change' Shinji nodded at his thought sadly. "Inform my wife I won't be joining her or my son at dinner today."
Kensuke ground his teeth at the request through some nervousness. But nodded. "I shall. But I'm not going, she'll kill me... I'll send someone, anything else."
Shinji took out his pen from his pocket, placed his feet under the desk and began to sign the papers. "Can you ask Dr Ibuki to see me?"
Kensuke nodded and turned walking out through the blackened room and through the double doors. The small amount of light that spilled into the room revealed the Tree Of Life markings upon the ceiling, and himself sitting at the head.
The small monitor to the side of his desk switched on as soon as Shinji just began to place his pen to the paper to signature it... "Yes, what is it now! IF it‘s any more papers I‘ll tell you where to put them.” He shouted loud enough to let anyone down the hall hear his reply. He looked to the concerned image of Dr Ibuki. He knew something was wrong and stood without her even uttering a breath.
"Sir-"
"I know - I'll be there." He placed the pen down and walked quickly through the door.

Dr Ibuki stood upon the Control Center at the top of the MAGI systems. She stared at the clip board and sipped her coffee from her mug. She sighed somewhat as she took out a pen from her labcoat pocket and began to write furiously onto the paper that read, 'Eva Unit-01 Report.' Maya then walked over to Aoeba to who now hand his hair cut short up to his chin.
"Any luck?" She whispered.
Aoeba shook his head slowly, "It's refusing the data of the Dummy Plug and the First Child." He looked to her with a confused look, his eyes clearly blackened on the undersides - lack of sleep made him yawn. "It keeps severing the connections."
Ibuki rubbed her eyes from a growing headache. "Argh - why won't it accept the commands? We cleared out all Sync files from the Eva that involves Commander Ikari and inserted-"
Aoeba interjected the last comment, "Commander Ikari is the only one who can pilot it."
Frustrated she simply nodded and yawned aloud. She turned around and then walked to a swivel chair sitting down heavily, feeling the weight off her feet relax her, throwing the clipboard onto the desk… and that for that brief of relaxation…
"Dr Ibuki."
Ibuki slowly stood up straight again before facing Rei, almost in attention. "Yes, Major?"
"I will be leaving NERV Headquarters for the hour. If anyone requires to reach me you know how too.” Rei’s body had filled, she was much taller and hour-classed-shaped than before. In fact, she was a spitting image of Yui Ikari, and Shinji looks to her when he wishes to see his mother’s face.
Ibuki raised an eyebrow. "Where are you going?"
"Commander Ikari's house, to a deliver a message." Rei paused mid step, but did not turn around to look upon the Dr. She then waited for a moment to make sure she was finished, and then continued to walk towards the elevator.
The elevator opened and Rei moved out of the way for the Commander to step out. Rei stared at his face for a moment, she could see the Gendo within him... And, even though she did not like that prospect… She knew Shinji was in control of NERV, and not the man who almost killed what she was. An individual.
Shinji smiled, which caused to Rei to smile back... They exchanged silent words as her bright red eyes stared into his darken brown… And Maya could not help but detect something behind that look… They shared it every time they passed.
"Ayanami..." He nodded as he walked out of the elevator, allowing her to pass.
"Thank you, Commander." She moved into the elevator and as she turned the double doors closed away that smiling face from Shinji’s view.
The Commander sighed as he placed his hands into his pockets and upon turning he saw Dr Ibuki hunched upon her chair with eyes closed, a mug of half empty cold coffee upon the floor next to her. He raised an eyebrow and walked over to the point where he was directly next to her.
"Dr Ibuki." His sounded almost like the Commander Ikari of the past and it scarred Maya‘s eyes wide open. She quickly jumped up from her seat and looked to Shinji, "Oh! Commander I-"
"It is alright. You have been working long nights lately." Shinji noticed the rings under her eyes, "…If you need a day off I'm sure I can-"
Interrupting briskly, "No! Commander, thank you but I'm okay."
Shinji simply nodded. "How is the reactivation of the Unit-01?"
Dr Ibuki made an expression of uneasiness and then snatched up her clipboard. "It is possible to reactivate Evangelion Unit-01..." She sighed, "But, only if you personally pilot it."
The hairs on the back of his neck stood up. Never, never would pilot that monster again. He then closed his eyes and stared off towards the MAGI central computer. "Did the Magi give any other alternatives?"
Dr Ibuki shook her head. "I'm sorry... The only other person who can answer that question instead of the MAGI... Is Dr Akagi..."
Shinji nodded. It was true, and that sad fact was that they would not get anything out of great scientific mind known as Ritsuko Akagi. Shortly after the attempt of Third Impact, she was proven clinically insane... No one knew why she turned out the way she did, but the doctors assumed extreme work related stress.
"I can rely on you to solve this?" Ikari spoke firmly.
She did not know the answer. "I can't gar-"
"I hope you know the importance of reactivating Unit-01..." Shinji spoke as he walked off towards the elevator. "I hope to see the project completed soon Dr Ibuki. We don't know what's around the corner."
Ibuki shuddered. Shinji had so many sides to him. The soft caring family man who tried to make time for his son, unlike Gendo did for Shinji.
But, when he came to NERV - he almost appeared to talk like Gendo sometimes. Wanting results, driving people below him to work far beyond the point they can work at, without directly ordering them... He seemed to manipulate… He seemed to know how to pull what strings…
Ibuki turned to Aeoba who simply looked back at her, shaking his head. "You know-"
"I know! I'm just glad Asuka can't see him at work." She looked back to Shinji who just entered the elevator. "Maybe that's why, he refused for her to come back and pilot Eva Unit-02."
"That kid was always complicated." Aoeba stated as he stared into the screen of the monitor, his face tightening as his eyes squinted at the screen in puzzlement, "Wait... Dr Ibuki what's this?"

Asuka sat at a wooden table in the middle of Misato's apartment. Well, it was theirs' now. Misato had finally understood her feelings for Kaji. Despite his death, she moved into where Kaji once stayed… And god knew where that was. Misato did visit once in a while, she talked to Asuka for long hours, even once had to comfort Asuka when Shinji had grew distant for a short time.
Asuka stared at the empty seat next to her, and then to her son who ate his food silently. She gazed at him as she felt her heart beat faster and faster. 'Dumbkoft... If he was going to be late, he could at least-' She paused her thought, as she looked to the empty seat once more. She loved to feel close to him, but she never said that to his face since the day they were married. ‘Bastard.'
The knock upon the door caused her to look from her untouched food to her son. Her son's eyes lit up for a moment. "It's daddy!" Asuka smiled somewhat. "You get the door, hun." Her voice was almost flat.
She watched as the small, six year old boy ran to get the door. She lowered her head to her food and picked it up. She moved over to the bin and dumped the whole thing into the bin. "...Bastard." She mumbled.
The door clicked open. And silence followed. The young boy came to Asuka with a look of disappointment upon his face, "It's for you mommy." The boy walked back to his chair and continued to eat, he looked disappointed… And ready to cry.
Asuka sighed. She hated that she was right. Anger was visible in her eyes. And when she got to the open door and looked out, Rei stood there with her black umbrella as the rain smashed onto the concrete floor below her. "Mrs Ikari-"
"He's not coming right." She quickly jumped in with a growl, "What is the excuse this time, Wonder Girl?" She glared into the red eyes.
"Commander Ikari has to work late-"
"I know that!" Asuka lowered her head and looked away, she held back her tears. "Why, Rei. What is it this time!"
"You know I cannot say Mrs Ikari." Rei lowered her gaze somewhat, "But… Even I don't know what is happening… Ikari will not tell me."
Asuka sighed. "He's protecting us. Like he always has been. Dumbkoft - we don't need protecting." She crossed her arms over her chest.
"How is Takuya?" Rei changed the subject, she felt tension rise and thought the best rout to destroying it was to talk about the usual things.
"He's fine. Disappointed his father is not here..." Asuka sighed as she smiled to Rei, "Come in, Doll."

Shinji stared out across his desk. He saw Gendo stand over him with that grin. His glasses shinning white, hiding his eyes… his smirking lips holding some scheme which threatened.
"Your always judging me, aren’t you father?"
The image disappeared as the monitor brightened the darkened room. Like a ghost… Gendo was gone.
"Commander!" Dr Ibuki's voice was panic stricken.
Shinji calmly looked to the monitor, "Yes?"
Dr Ibuki looked back to Aoeba who was shouting to her with incoherent audibility. But looked back to the monitor. "We have found a signal, a faint signal As if it weren't even alive... It was almost impossible to spot...But it's code is blue."
Shinji's head lowered. "Where?" Still, he sounded calm.
"The high rise flat district. Moving towards us!"
"Stand by for my instructions. Put the Geosfront into high alert." He turned off the monitor and then leant back in his chair..
Kensuke stood next to Shinji... "They've returned again?"
Shinji locked his fingers together and placed them in front of him. "Again."
Kensuke crossed his arms over his chest. "It's good timing because we've finished the new Dummy Plug system for Unit-00."
"Let's see if our new toy works." Shinji turned on the monitor to see Aeoba and Maya working hard, jumping from computer to computer; Maya turned to the screen. “What are your orders Sir?”
"The Director Of Operations Rei Ayanami is not here, and shall not have priority over the operation. Dr Ibuki, you have authority over this mission. Activate Unit-00's Dummy Plug system. Do not fail …"
Kensuke switched the monitor over to the view screen. Sachiel stood walking between the buildings.
Shinji placed his hands in front of his face. "Returned for revenge? Old friend…?"

The cage slowly began to retract from the large monolithic Evangelion. The new Unit 00‘s shining neon blue body armour gleaned in the light as it moved under the ejection tunnel. And it held in it’s grasp the Lance of Longiness.
