Consumation of Flesh
"San...SAN!"
San was snapped out of her daydreams to look at her wolf brother. He growled softly and demanded why she hadn¡¯t answered him sooner.
"Hm? Oh, sorry, I was thinking."
"About that disgusting human, no doubt."
San soundly rapped him on the nose which only earned her a cold nose thrust against her side. She refused to tell him that he was right. Neither did she give in to the want to blush. Those were human reactions. Wolves don¡¯t blush. They make the snow blush with fresh blood.
"let's go."
San streaked down the mountain and grabbed her brother's ear and pulled herself up on his back. They were going to teach the Ape tribe a lesson about respect. San was concerned. The Ape tribe never showed this much disrespect before. Something was getting to them.
"There!"
The giant wolf turn-stopped kicking up a storm of dust. San set her mouth to a grim line as she saw the gory mess before her. Humans were torn open and half-eaten and strewn over the cut tree trunks. San covered nose and took a half-step back; the smell of rotting flesh and the foul smell of ripped intestines filled the air. There was about 20 humans in all different stages of decay. The apes had retreated to a safe distance when they smelled the wolves approaching. San drew a breath and kicked over bloated carcasses to search faces. Failure. No sign of Eboshi. Success. No sign on Ashitaka either. San shook her head. Why should she care about that human? He¡¯d betrayed her by refusing her Eboshi¡¯s blood. *WAP* *TONK* San growled and looked up. Those damn apes were at it again.
"How DARE you disrespect the Moro clan so, apes!"
The wolf's voice was raised in outrage.
"Yours is no longer the clan of Moro, wolf."
"YOU DARE IMPUGN OUR MAGNIFICENT MOTHER'S NAME?!"
The wolf thundered. San growled outright and felt her anger boil.
"She has died and left the forest and her clan to rot!"
"enough."
The wolves and San charged at the Apes. San lowered her mask and raised her spear. These apes were going to pay for those insults with more than a few pints of their wretched blood! San didn¡¯t notice, but while she raged inside, the apes had not moved. The hadn¡¯t moved to retreat, nor to fight back. The wolves started their massacre as soon as teeth could reach fur. The Apes howled in pain as one, but they remained. As the Moro clan fought their way into the horde of wolves, only then did they realize that the apes had formed a circle around them.
"Now, give us the human to eat and we shall let you pass, wolf."
San screamed in anger, "you can't gain anything by eating the flesh of men! Look at what it has made you!"
"It has made us wiser. It has allowed us to exact our revenge."
San was horrified. She had no choice but to kill. Kill them all. The wolf next her growled in agreement. Kill we must. But when will it ever stop? The Shishigami-sama would NEVER allow this! San flew into action without warning. The apes shrieked in hunger as she came towards them. Her spear flew and circled; slashing fur, bone, flesh. But she knew she couldn't hold this up. Her arms weakened and she felt the ape's leathery hand grab at her and attempt to pull her down. All of a sudden, an arrow shot through the darkness. Off came a few heads and arms. The apes shrieked.
"HUMAN! HUMAN! EAT! EAT! EAT!"
Ashitaka slew ape after ape and soon, they were forced to retreat. All the ape dead were left untouched. Even the wolves knew not to eat them, lest they contract the same madness that controlled the apes. Ashitaka pushed aside the bodies and gently drew out San. All she could muster was a hand on his cheek and a soft, "Ashitaka..." before her vision disappeared.
