Choices

“As you can tell today, communication is even more important and challenging than it was ten years ago. Developing excellent communication skills is extremely important to your future. Many job advertisements specifically ask for excellent oral and written communication skills. As you can see by the diagram on the board of a recent survey this is what most employers are …..” the new ethics teacher droned. Yukki found herself staring out the large window. She looked down at her notebook and was surprised to find that she had doodled pictures of both Kaname and Zero. She could tell where her mind had wandered off to. She knew that she was the envy of the Day class females because of Zero. She also knew that the female vampires of the night class could not understand what Kaname saw in her. Admittedly, she was a bit curious herself. She could not understand what the two saw in her. Zero, the pride of the Day class guys, was smart and athletic, if a bit standoffish. Yukki thought for sure that he would hate her; hate her for making him drink her blood, to fight to stay human, to fight to stay alive, and to fight to stay sane. But Zero was hers and she would not allow him to just give up and die, nor would she allow him to be killed. Then there was Kaname. What about him? Kaname was the elite vampire, the pure blood, the one that was supposed to be untouchable to all and the vampire that had saved her life. To her he was smart and caring. He was the only vampire that had let her touch his fangs even though it was supposed to be a secret. She had loved Kaname for as long as she could remember. Like Zero, Kaname belonged to her. Yukki sighed, she couldn’t help herself. She couldn’t choose between the two of them. She had to have both.
“Ms. Cross!”
Yukki snapped to attention. She blushed deeply, noticing that the teacher had asked her a question and she had not even heard what he had asked.
“Ms. Cross, will you do us the honor of answering the question?”
“Could you please repeat the question Sir?”
“Ms. Cross, due to your excellent attention during class, you now have secondary classes for today.” He said snidely.
“Yes, Sir” Yukki said sadly. The teacher began lecturing again and almost immediately, her mind began to wander again. She looked up and noticed that that Zero was missing from the class. ‘Again he’s skipping’ she thought irritably,’ I wonder what he is doing?’ Sighing she tried to focus on the rest of the lecture. Why did she even have to take this class anyway? She knew all about first impressions and such. She dealt with vampires on a regular basis, so regular human ethics were not going to do her any good anyway. She did not need any other extra classes added to her already busy schedule. Her duties as a prefect and the problems with Zero and Kaname were starting to wear on her. God, she was so tired. Unable to focus on the lecture, she wondered if Zero would be there to help in her duties. He would be there. Zero could not abandon her, he just couldn’t. He had to help her. “Definitely!” Yukki shouted out loud slapping her hands hard on the desk in front of her.
“Ms. Cross” the teacher stated loudly. “Please control yourself, and since you are so enthusiastic about this subject how about we add two more days of extra classes?”
“Yes, Sir” Yukki groaned.
The teacher turned back to the board and Yukki soon found her gaze captured by the large window in the classroom again. Zero had not been around very much lately and she was starting to worry about him. At least he had stopped trying to pick fights with Kaname every five seconds. Thinking back, it was almost as if the two had come to some sort of truce. She didn’t know if this thought made her happy or uneasy. Just what had happened that she didn’t know about? Zero was slowly becoming like her knight in slightly tarnished armor and where Kaname was becoming like her dark fairytale prince. She wanted, with her whole heart, a world where humans and vampires could co-exist. She glanced back at Zero’s seat. Where was he? What if another hunter had come and tried to kill him? What if she could not protect him? What if the vampires tried to attack him again? What if? What if? Yukki could feel herself getting close to panicking. Noticing the teacher giving her a dark look, she quickly tried to calm herself. ‘Don’t be silly’ she told herself ‘the light may not kill the elite vampires here at the school, but they sure don’t like to venture out into the sun very often.’ The bell rang loudly, pulling her from her thoughts once more. Standing up, she braced herself. ‘Time to go to work.’

The work day was just like any other day: the Day class girls were pushing her around, not wanting to listen, and accusing her of wanting to keep the Night class all to herself. “Yukki, you should not worry about him so much. You have been known to make yourself sick with worry. He does not deserve it. Zero was with me today. We had much to discuss. He should be joining you shortly. He should be with you, protecting you. He owes you that much.”
“Why do you always say that, Sempi?”
“He hurt my favorite girl, among other things.” Kaname said softly, running his fingers gently down the side of her neck. She flinched slightly when his fingers glanced over the spot that still bore Zero’s fang marks. Yukki watched in wonder as his eyes took on a slightly darker shade of red.
“Sempi?”
Shaking himself from his deep thoughts, and being sure to keep his voice calm and smoothing, he said, ”Do not worry yourself about this anymore Yukki, this will all work out soon. That I promise you. Please be careful. I will see you later.”
“Thank you, Kaname-sempi.” She said, and then turned back to look at the students blocking the Night classe’s way. “Okay! Day students should head back to your dorms. The show’s over. Idol-sempi, please don’t harass the Day students!”
“Yukki-chan, I would rather be harassing you.” Adol answered playfully. He became more serous as he walked up to her. He leaned over and whispered darkly in her ear, “When are you going to allow me to taste that wonderful blood of yours again?” Feeling the hair on the back of his neck stand on end, Adol looked toward Kaname, who was giving him a dark look that promised pain. Adol quickly smiled and said, “Just joking!” as he quickly walked away from her. Yukki was in a mild state of shock as she watched the Night class walk away. She couldn’t help but wonder what Kaname had meant by “among other things”. Kaname was upset about Zero feeding from her, but what else was there? As she started her rounds her mind was full of questions, and there were so few answers. It was starting to give her a headache. Zero still had not shown up and it seemed that the Day class would not be causing any major problems for once. As Yukki moved though the slightly wooded area toward the gate, she never noticed the shadow that had been quietly following her since the moon had risen. After checking the gate, she sighed tiredly and decided, since all was secure and quite, she would try to get some extra sleep. Walking to her room, her head still full of thoughts of Zero and Kaname, she looked down to her rumpled uniform and scrunched up her nose. Bed sounded good, but a nice hot bath sounded even better. She turned on her heel sharply and walked to the Chairman’s Quarter’s large bathroom.
