Kanda was annoyed, although even he had to admit that that wasn't exactly anything new. But as he sat cross-armed in the train's private cabin, staring out the window with a glare that should have been able to cut a hole through the glass, he knew that he hadn't felt this completely irritated since...well, since the last time he had been forced on a mission with a partner he couldn't stand.
"I'm beginning to think you're not having fun, Yu-chan," said the voice to his left. Kanda looked out of the corner of his eye, without turning away from the window. Sitting there, grinning stupidly, was Lavi. He looked expectantly at Kanda, most likely aware of how much he was aggravating him at the moment.
"Tch," was Kanda's only response. He turned his eyes back toward the quickly-passing landscape outside. Lavi using his given name was bad enough, but when he used Japanese honorifics to try and sound cute, it made it that much more irritating. And the maddening part was that Lavi surely knew how much he hated it, and that made Kanda hate it even more. It was a cycle of aggravation, and it was almost admirable how Lavi was able to drive Kanda so thoroughly mad with only a single sentence. Almost.
"I can't believe we're going to Denmark," Lavi continued, swinging his legs in his seat. "Have you ever been there? I haven't. I mean, I've been all over, but I've never been there. I wonder what the food is like. Do you think they have those pastries, danishes? I wonder if that's where the name came from..."
Kanda still couldn't believe that he got stuck with Lavi on this mission. There had been reports of numerous disappearances in and around Copenhagen, and Finders in the area had reported it as possibly the work of an akuma. Komui had instructed Kanda and Lavi to check it out, to Kanda's displeasure. Kanda asked why he couldn't go on the mission with Lenalee instead, but Komui took it the wrong way and threw Kanda out of his office before he could explain. Even another mission with the bean sprout would be preferable to the incessant chattering coming from Kanda's left.
"...and I hear that it's the happiest place in the world. Someone did a study or something. If that's the case, I'm glad we're visiting. I wonder if it really is -"
"Listen," Kanda finally snapped, turning to face Lavi. "I don't care about having a good time or going on a vacation. I'm here because of the mission, and once we take down this akuma, I'm getting on the first train back to headquarters, whether you're there or not. I'm perfectly willing to leave you behind, for all I care."
Lavi just smiled. "That's pretty harsh, Yu," he said, stretching his arms above his head. Kanda rolled his eyes and turned back to face the window. It was going to be a long train ride.
---
"This is useless," Kanda said with a sneer. The two exorcists were walking side-by-side down the street, both wearing an expression of exhaustion and defeat. "There's no akuma here."
Kanda and Lavi had spent two days searching the city for information regarding the suspected akuma, and had come up with nothing. Despite their best efforts to scout out where the creature might be hiding, and consulting with people in the area about the disappearances, they were no closer to finding it than they were when they arrived. Kanda had gone so far as to send the area's Finders back to headquarters, in a much ruder tone of voice than Lavi thought was strictly necessary.
"You might be right," Lavi sighed. "But if it's not an akuma, where did all of those people disappear to?"
"I don't care," Kanda said, pinching the bridge of his nose. "If there's no akuma, it's not our problem."
The street was crowded, which was to be expected, as Copenhagen was a fairly busy city. Still, being around so many people was beginning to wear on Kanda's nerves. He couldn't wait to get back to headquarters and sit in silence for a while. Just then, he was roughly shaken from his thoughts by someone bumping into his shoulder as they walked past. The person muttered an insincere apology under their breath. Kanda stopped in his tracks and began to turn to face the offender, opening his mouth to unleash his anger.
In an instant, both Kanda and Lavi were knocked backwards through the air into the side of a nearby building, hard enough to cause plaster and dust to fly into the air. Screams erupted in the crowded street.
Kanda hissed in pain as he picked himself off the ground; his back ached where it had hit the building behind him. Next to him, he could hear Lavi coughing as he tried to catch the breath. He looked up and saw, rather than the passerby who had bumped his shoulder, an enormous akuma. It stood on four legs, its front limbs ending in massive talons. Its body appeared to be formed from hundreds of huge, metallic plates, interlocking like an insect's shell. Great wings like a bat's were folded on its back, and stretched in front of its body was a long, segmented tail, ending in a sharp point like a scorpion's stinger.
"EXORCISTS!" it screamed in an unearthly voice. It raised itself up on two legs, towering over the two prone men, and stretched its wings open; its wingspan was nearly the length of the entire city block.
"Oh, shit," Lavi murmured.
In an instant, the akuma lunged forward. It was impossibly fast. Kanda didn't have time to draw his sword before the beast was on him, slamming him back on the ground, its enormous claws wrapped around his body. Kanda gritted his teeth; the weight of the akuma was pressing down on him, crushing him into the ground.
"I've been following you since you arrived, exorcists," it growled, forcing more weight onto Kanda's body. He gasped for breath. "But you never noticed me! Is this the best the Black Order can do?"
"Hey, ugly!" Lavi shouted. The akuma turned its head toward the sound, and was immediately greeted with Lavi's hammer, expanded to enormous size, smashing into its face, sending it flying backwards off of Kanda and into the building on the other side of the street. The building crumbled on impact, the pieces falling in huge chunks on top of the akuma, burying it. Lavi rushed to Kanda's side to see if he was alright. "Guess there's an akuma here after all," he said, holding out a hand to help Kanda stand. Kanda coughed as he grabbed Lavi's outstretched hand and pulled himself up, trying to catch his breath.
A rumbling sound from the pile of debris told the exorcists that the battle was far from over. Kanda drew his weapon and, running his fingers along the side of the blade, activated its Innocence. Lavi tightened his grip on his hammer's handle.
"We've got to move this fight elsewhere," Lavi said under his breath. "There are too many people around here."
"I'll handle this," Kanda said sharply, as the akuma extracted itself from the rubble. The monster crouched slightly, then charged at the exorcists again – but Kanda was ready this time, and dodged out of the way, slicing at the akuma's body with his sword as he dashed past it. Howling in pain, the akuma swung its barbed tail toward Kanda. He blocked each strike with a powerful swing of his blade, finally jumping up over the tail and, grabbing it for a moment for balance, landed on the creature's back. He prepared to drive Mugen's blade into the back of the akuma's head, but at that moment, the akuma's wings unfurled and began to beat powerfully up and down. Before he had realized what had happened, the akuma was carrying Kanda high up over the city, leaving Lavi yelling after them on the ground.
Kanda silently panicked. This was bad. Chancing a glance down, he saw that they had already left the city far behind and were now passing over the vast ocean. He gripped Mugen in one hand and the akuma's plated back with the other and trying his best not to fall off.
"Nowhere to run, exorcist," the akuma said with a foul laugh. Kanda looked back and saw that the akuma had brought its tail up high, preparing to strike, the stinger glinting in the sunlight threateningly. Kanda was certain he didn't want to find out what would happen if he were struck with it. He twisted his body so that he was sitting facing the beast's tail, and in a flash, the stinger came down. Kanda barely managed to bring up his blade and block it before it came down on his head. The akuma's tail pressed down with such strength that Kanda was forced onto his back, holding off the attack as best he could, as the akuma pressed harder and harder to try and break his hold.
"Yuuuuuu...!" Kanda heard a voice from a distance. He chanced taking his eyes off the akuma's tail for a second and saw, coming toward them at lightning speed, Lavi, holding onto the quickly-extending handle of his hammer. Kanda's jaw slacked, dumbfounded. What was he doing? Instantly, Lavi had landed face-first on the akuma's back next to Kanda, his now shrunken hammer in hand.
Kanda found his voice. "And what were you planning on doing next?" he yelled in frustration.
"I, uh, hadn't thought that far ahead!" Lavi answered with a sheepish laugh and a shrug of his shoulders.
Kanda responded with an angry click of his tongue. With all his strength, he pushed the akuma's tail to the side and sat up. The tail reared up again for another strike, but Kanda was too fast; with a quick flick of Mugen's blade, the end of the tail was sliced clean off. The akuma screamed in pain, cursing the exorcists in its ghastly voice.
"Wait, I have an idea now!" Lavi laughed. Kanda shot him with a deadly glare, but Lavi didn't seem to notice. He held his hammer above his head, and began to invoke its power. "Big hammer, little hammer – grow, grow, GROW!"
Immediately the hammer's head swelled, growing at an incredible rate. Kanda suddenly realized that while Lavi would not feel the hammer's increasing weight, the akuma would. As the hammer's size increased, the akuma visibly struggled to stay in the air. In seconds, the akuma's wings buckled, and it began to tumble out of the sky, screaming in incoherent rage. Kanda held onto the akuma's back as tightly as he could, struggling to keep his eyes open against the fierce winds. Next to him, Lavi held his hammer upright with one hand while trying his best to hold on, yelling with what seemed less like fear and more like excitement as they plunged downward toward the ground. If we survive this, Kanda said to himself, I'll kill him.
With a mighty THUD, the akuma crashed to the ground, forming a small crater and kicking up clouds of dirt around it. Glad that the akuma had broken their fall, Kanda leapt down off of its back and onto the ground with Lavi coming down beside him, largely unharmed. Taking a moment to take in their surroundings, he saw that they had traveled far across the ocean, with the coastline of the city barely visible on the horizon. The terrain was rocky but mostly flat, outside of a few large boulders and potholes, and the massive cliff face that loomed a few hundred yards away. The sun had begun to set, casting the landscape in a purple hue.
"Well, this is a mess," Lavi sighed, taking a few steps forward and rubbing his shoulder. "I can't believe we never knew that akuma was following us."
"Maybe if you hadn't been so intent on enjoying your vacation, we could have gotten more scouting done," Kanda spat.
"Hey, are you saying this is my fault?" Lavi said with an incredulous laugh. "That's a good one."
Kanda turned on his heel to face Lavi, his long hair whipping behind him. "Yes, this is your fault. It's your fault we're stranded here, and it's your fault that..."
Just then, Kanda realized that Lavi was looking past him, his good eye widening in shock. Before he could turn to see what was behind him, Lavi rushed forward, pushing him to the ground. Kanda could barely keep track of what happened next – he looked up, saw the akuma, still very much alive, lunging from where they had left it, and Lavi standing where Kanda had been only seconds before. One of the akuma's arms darted forward in a flash, and before Lavi could react, it swung to the side with an incredible force, knocking him ten feet through the air, until he hit a large boulder. He tumbled to the ground, unmoving.
"LAVI!" Kanda yelled. He couldn't move. He could hardly process what had just occurred. How could this have happened? How could he have let this happen?
"This has gone on long enough, exorcist," the beast growled. Kanda turned his head to look at the monster with fire in his eyes, rage pulsing through his entire body.
"Yes," he said, standing up slowly, "it has."
The akuma moved first. It reached for Kanda with its great claws, and although the swordsman was able to evade the attack, it managed to leave a long scratch along his side. Kanda ignored the pain, and dashed around to the creature's left side. It prepared to attack him again, but in a flash, Kanda had dropped to the ground feet-first and slid under the akuma's body. Before the akuma knew what had happened, Kanda was on its other side, one foot perched on its shoulder and the blade of his sword resting against the back of its neck.
"We're done," he said, bringing his blade down, and the beast's head fell to the ground. The akuma's body shattered into thousands of pieces, and the soul inside that was once human glistened in the failing sunlight for a moment, before fading away.
Kanda breathed heavily, exhausted from the fight. He only paused for a moment before he ran to where Lavi was laying on the ground, dropping Mugen behind him.
"Lavi!" Kanda shouted, dropping down on his knees next to Lavi. He grabbed the redhead's shoulders and shook them, perhaps a bit too hard. "Lavi, open your damn eye, come on!" His brow furrowed, and he felt his heart beginning to race. If Lavi was...
He heard a small noise, something between a moan and a squeak. He leaned down closer to Lavi's face, listening hard in case he tried to speak. Suddenly, Lavi's hand was behind Kanda's head, pulling him downwards, until their lips connected in a hard kiss. Kanda pulled himself away and, seeing Lavi's smile for a split second, punched him in the jaw.
"Idiot!" Kanda growled. Lavi laid his head back down on the ground, still smiling even as his face was becoming red where Kanda's fist had connected. "What were you thinking? How could you be so reckless? You could be dead!"
"You were worried about me," Lavi grinned. If he was in pain, either from the akuma's attack or Kanda's punch, he wasn't showing it.
"I was not," Kanda said angrily. "You should've -"
"Should've what?" Lavi asked, his voice suddenly serious. "Should've let you get killed?"
Kanda didn't have an answer to that. He put a hand to his forehead, exasperated, and let out a deep, frustrated sigh. He walked back to where he had dropped his sword, stooped down to pick it up, and returned it to its sheath. He examined the gash in his side; his coat was thoroughly ruined, but he wasn't bleeding, and the pain had already slowly begun to subside, but he knew that Lavi could not recover his strength so quickly. "It's getting dark out," he said finally, "and we're miles from anywhere. We should find somewhere to rest until morning."
"Right, right," Lavi said, struggling to his feet. He looked around for his hammer, eventually finding it a few feet away. "How about one of those caves up there?"
"What caves?" Rather than answering, Lavi pointed up and behind Kanda. He turned to look, and his eyes landed on the cliff, which from Kanda's estimations was around ten miles high, and noticed for the first time that a few open caverns dotted its side. "Oh, no," Kanda moaned. Lavi just grinned that maddening grin, and walked up to Kanda, and turned his hammer upside down, stepping onto the head with one foot.
"Hold this," he said, grabbing Kanda's hands and placing them around the hammer's handle, before putting his own hands on either side of Kanda's.
"No, no, no," Kanda protested, but Lavi wasn't listening.
"Big hammer, little hammer..."
"NO!"
"EXTEND!"
Like a bullet, the hammer's handle shot upwards and out, sending the two exorcists careening toward the cliff face. Kanda screamed in terror, allowing himself to forget his dignity for the moment, while Lavi laughed, as if they were taking a joyride rather than rapidly approaching their deaths. Just when it seemed that they would crash into the side of the cliff, Lavi quickly maneuvered the hammer's handle, aiming them directly into the open mouth of a cave. Kanda hit the hard ground with a thud, and Lavi tumbled in after him, rolling on the floor until he hit the back wall of the cave. The hammer's handle retracted in Lavi's hand, until it was once again its normal size. Lavi picked himself up, dusted off his pants and jacket, and leaned the hammer against the cave's wall.
"That was fun!" He grinned, looking expectantly at Kanda, who was still lying in a heap on the floor. He looked up at Lavi with a glare frightening enough to wipe the smile right off the redhead's face. "Well, how else would we get up here, anyway?" he muttered to himself as he took off his headband, his long hair falling sloppily in his face.
Kanda stood up, sighed, and placed his sword on the ground, followed by his jacket and belt. He looked over at Lavi, who was struggling to remove his own jacket, before he threw it in a pile on the floor alongside his scarf.
"Looks like we made it just in time," Lavi said, gesturing toward the cave's mouth. Rain had just begun to fall, and the storm clouds had darkened the sky even more. "I guess we're not going anywhere for a while."
"Hmm," was Kanda's only reply. Ideally, he would have liked to have been at a train station by now, with a ticket in his hand to get back to headquarters, but Lavi was right; there was no way they were going anywhere until the next morning at the earliest. Lavi laid on the cave's floor, his arms behind his head to cushion it against the rocky surface. Kanda sat, leaning against one of the walls, with his legs straight in front of him and his hands in his lap, staring at the ceiling. Except for the rain beating down outside the cave, it was completely silent. Neither spoke, instead listening to the sound of the rain and their own breathing. After several minutes of this, Kanda surprised himself by speaking, and surprised himself even more by what he said: "Why...why did you kiss me?"
"It seemed like a good idea," Lavi said, after a moment's pause. Kanda didn't dare look at him, but he could tell that he was smiling as he spoke. "Is that why you punched me?"
"No," Kanda replied honestly, still not tearing his eyes away from the cave's ceiling. "I was angry because you unnecessarily put yourself in danger, and threatened the mission."
"You were worried about me!" Lavi said with a laugh.
"Shut up," Kanda spat. He could feel his face turning red. He crossed his arms and looked out at the falling rain.
"Oh come on, you love me."
"Not even remotely."
"Are you sure?" Kanda looked at Lavi out of the corner of his eye. He had rolled onto his stomach and was looking directly at Kanda, an impish smile on his face. Kanda clicked his tongue, making an annoyed sound, and turned his gaze back to the rain outside. "I think it's sweet. That you were worried, that is. You're a good friend, even if you try not to be."
Kanda looked back at Lavi. A lock of red hair flopped down into his face, covering the black patch over his right eye. "You're my partner in this mission," Kanda finally said. "If something happened to you...the mission would be a failure. That's all."
"Bullshit," Lavi said with a bark of laughter. "You don't think that at all. You've never given a damn about your partners, as long as the job gets done." Kanda blinked several times in succession, surprised by Lavi's sudden accusations. "So what's different this time?"
Kanda didn't know what to say. He was still trying to figure out the answer to that question himself. It was true, he usually never gave a second thought to whatever exorcist was assigned as his partner for a mission, only caring about securing the Innocence or destroying the target. But when Lavi had hit the ground and it appeared that he might not get back up, Kanda felt such a mix of emotions that he couldn't put it into words. What was different?
He was knocked from his thoughts when he noticed that Lavi was no longer laying on his stomach a few yards from him; he was on his hands and knees, crawling toward him. Suddenly, Lavi's face was inches from Kanda's, his knees straddled over Kanda's outstretched legs, his body hovering close enough that Kanda could feel his warmth. "What are you -" he began, but he was silenced when, for the second time that day, Lavi kissed him. While the kiss that Lavi had stolen earlier was quick and strong, this was soft and gentle, as if he thought Kanda might be scared away; and although Kanda was surprised, he did not immediately try to break away. Lavi's lips against his were soft and tender, but something intense, like an electrical storm, seemed to be charging between them.
Lavi broke the kiss, but did not move his face away from Kanda's. "Do you want this?" he whispered. His voice was low and full of longing, not his usual boisterous, carefree tone. Kanda did not respond; he didn't know what he wanted, or how to vocalize it. Rather than answer, then, Kanda leaned forward, his lips meeting Lavi's again. A pulsing heat erupted deep within his body and his heart raced. He parted his lips slightly, letting his tongue escape into Lavi's mouth; he tasted like orange marmalade, from the pastries he had insisted on buying for lunch.
Kanda kept his arms firmly to his sides, but Lavi's hands were quickly roaming down Kanda's body, one reaching up under Kanda's shirt, and the other dipping down lower, to the waistband of his pants. As the redhead's fingers grazed his hipbone, Kanda moaned into Lavi's mouth despite himself; he could feel his pants beginning to tighten. Lavi was certainly aware of it as well, as his hand drifted lower still. He pulled away, a dreamy look in his eye.
"Let's take care of this," Lavi grinned, as his fingers moved toward the buttons. He quickly pulled the pants down several inches and reached in, taking hold of Kanda's growing erection. Kanda gasped slightly at the touch, feeling himself stiffening more as Lavi moved his hand up and down the length. He closed his eyes and put his head back against the wall – and so he wasn't prepared for the sudden sensation of Lavi taking the entire length in his mouth.
"Ah!" Kanda groaned, his eyes quickly opening in surprise. His hands flew to Lavi's head, his fingers entangling themselves in that intoxicatingly red hair. Lavi moved his tongue like an expert, starting at the base and moving upward in long strokes, before taking it again deep in his throat. Kanda found himself wondering if he had done this before. It suddenly occurred to him that he knew nothing of Lavi's life before he joined the Black Order. He always acted so open with everyone, but in truth, there were so many things about himself that he kept hidden. The two of them had more in common than he had realized.
Kanda was suddenly brought back to the present as he felt something building up inside him, about to explode. "Ahh – I'm gonna..." He tried to pull himself away, but Lavi's hands on his hips kept him from moving. With a loud moan and a shudder, he came into the back of Lavi's throat, and he swallowed everything, his mouth teasing Kanda until every drop was spent.
Kanda sat unmoving as stars danced in front of his eyes; what were they supposed to do now? Lavi gently laid his head on Kanda's stomach, without a word, for just a moment.
"We should get some sleep," Lavi said quietly. He sat up, then brought himself to his feet, before moving to another area of the cave and lying down, using his piled-up jacket as a pillow for his head. Kanda opened his mouth momentarily, then closed it when he realized he didn't know what he should say. Instead, he leaned his head back against the wall, and closed his eyes.
---
Kanda woke with a stiff feeling in his neck. He had slept with his head leaning against the cave's wall. His discomfort was multiplied when he looked down and saw, to his great embarrassment, that his pants were still undone. The memory of the events of the previous night washed over him. It wasn't a dream, he thought as he quickly buttoned himself; it really happened. He glanced toward the mouth of the cave, and saw Lavi, sitting with his legs dangling over the edge, looking out at the early morning sky. Lavi was wearing his coat and scarf, apparently ready to get back on the road. Kanda stood and stepped toward him, opening his mouth to call out his name, but he couldn't make himself form the words. "H-hey," was all he could get out.
"Since we killed our ride, it looks like we'll have to take the hammer back to the city," Lavi said without turning his head, ignoring Kanda's uneasy greeting. "Is that alright?"
Kanda blinked, pausing awkwardly before answering. "Ah...as much as I hate it, I suppose it's our only option."
Lavi stood and turned to face Kanda. They each held the other's gaze for a few seconds, before Lavi grinned his devilish, maddening grin, and picked up his hammer, still leaning against the wall where he left it. "Grab your things."
Kanda nodded and began to gather his belongings from the cave's floor. As he buttoned his now-ragged jacket, he wondered why Lavi wasn't acknowledging what had happened the precious night. Did it not mean anything to him? No...since Kanda was dwelling on it, did that mean that it meant something to him? He sighed, pushed the thought from his mind, and straightened his coat. This mission was over.
