Chapter 1: The Idea
Even after living with him for nearly two months, Misato didn’t know what to make of her young ward Shinji Ikari. At first she’d written his extreme awkwardness off as the kind of thing all pubescent boys experience, but after observing his friends Kensuke and Touji’s drooling responses to her presence, she had realized there was something different about the Third Child. It wasn’t that he was gay: she regularly caught him taking long, lingering glances at her body when he thought she wasn’t looking. Whenever she caught him she would give him a flirtatious wink and sometimes struck a pose to “give him a better look,” causing him to lose all composure, blush an adorable shade of red, and apologize so profusely one would think he had committed some grievous crime. It also made him double his efforts at doing his chores for a time, an effect Misato quite happily took advantage of.
Sitting in the NERV cafeteria, idly enjoying the boxed lunch Shinji had so carefully prepared for her that morning, the violet-haired Captain pondered the boy’s eccentricities. She had only just recently returned to active duty, having taken a week off to recover from her minor injuries caused by the Fifth Angel’s attack. That whole incident had really highlighted the paradox that was Shinji Ikari. While Rei may have been the biggest hero of the day, blocking the Angel’s blast long enough for Shinji to swap out the fuse on the cannon, there was something especially amazing about the way he rescued Rei from the overheated entry plug. It had been downright gallant, the kind of knight-in-shining-armor, fireman-carry-from-a-burning-building thing that almost any lady would swoon over. Hell, she thought, he even got Rei to smile. It was incredibly brave and very badass, and totally at odds with the image of a boy who spent most of his days off from school diligently cleaning their apartment.
“I haven’t seen you looking this lost in thought since Kaji,” came the familiar voice of Ritsuko from behind Misato, startling her. “A new man in your life, perhaps?”
Misato laughed, “not quite new and not quite a man. And didn’t I tell you to never mention him in my presence again?”
The faux blonde ignored her friend’s pointed glare as she took the seat across from the captain. “So you’re daydreaming about Ikari, then?”
“Not daydreaming,” Misato said. “Just… pondering. Trying to figure him out.”
“Anything I should be concerned about?” Akagi said with a slightly worried expression. The battle with the Fifth Angel had been very stressful for the pilots, and it may have taken a greater toll on Shinji’s mental health than she had first thought.
“Nah,” Misato replied, dismissing her friend’s concern with a wave of her hand. “I’m just trying to solve the riddle. He’s just so shy and meek most of the time, and seems totally spineless. He fusses over me like he’s desperate for approval. But then there are those times where suddenly he’s Lord Iron Balls and pulls off some incredible feat of bravery. I just don’t get it.”
Ritsuko leaned back in her seat and folded her arms in front of her in what Misato recognized as her ‘thinking’ pose, unintentionally pushing her ample breasts up. “You’re having a hard time reconciling the timid boy he often is with the noble man he has proven to be when under severe pressure to perform. Have you considered that that may just be, as they say, two sides of the same coin?”
“Eh?”
“Maybe he is just very inherently selfless. He strives to help others and make others happy in whatever way he can. Normally that takes the form of obedience to the directions of those whose approval he most desires, but in situations that require him to take initiative, he is capable of doing so, albeit not with much enthusiasm.”
Misato smiled at the doctor’s thorough hypothesis. Typical Ritsu, she thought, so clueless about people when actually interacting with them, but frame them as a logic puzzle to be solved and she can figure them out easily. “So,” she said, “you don’t think there’s a problem with him? I’m just worrying about nothing?”
“Well, I wouldn’t say ‘nothing’, Misato. If Shinji really is so… submissive in nature, then it is important that he receives the guidance, discipline, and positive reinforcement that he needs.”
Misato’s eyes went wide as she instantly caught what Ritsuko was implying. “You can’t seriously mean… I… what the fuck, Ritsu? He’s a teenager!”
Akagi shrugged. “As a scientist I try not to moralize. Shinji is a resource to NERV, a very valuable and scarce resource, and it is important that solutions be found to any problem that may compromise his ability to pilot Unit 01. If fucking him when he’s good and spanking him when he’s bad means keeping him stable and functioning, then I’ll do it myself if I have to.” Ritsuko’s tone was purely professional, belying the childish glee she felt at seeing her friend turn bright red. All too often it was Misato making her flustered, and she relished the opportunity for payback.
“Oh fuck you Ritsu,” Misato stammered, trying to regain her composure. “This is insane, even for you. No way am I letting you touch him!”
“Well, I was actually thinking you would be best for the job-“ Misato cut her off with an outraged cry.
“I AM NOT GOING TO FUCK SHINJI!”
There was a long moment of silence as the two nervously glanced around to see if anyone had heard the captain’s outburst. This was not a conversation either of the two would like to explain to their coworkers. Seeing that the coast was clear, Ritsuko continued.
“As I was saying, for the role of Shinji’s dominant, you would be ideal. He trusts you implicitly, cares for you deeply, and certainly finds you sexually attractive. You are capable of being authoritative when needed, but warm and supportive at other times. If you weren’t such a slob-“ Misato glared “-you would be absolutely perfect at giving him the firm but loving hand he needs. Not to mention, you have probably more experience with this sort of thing than any woman in Tokyo-3.”
After recovering from her mutism that followed witnessing Second Impact, Misato had done what Ritsuko liked to call “making up for lost time.” She went from being an extreme introvert to an extreme extrovert almost overnight, becoming quite the party girl. She had lived life to the fullest, but had paid little attention to things like money. As a result, the money her father had left her that should have comfortably seen her through college didn’t even last until her fourth semester. Fortunately, she had been able to find an easy source of income by moonlighting as a professional dominatrix, fulfilling the darkest desires of wealthy clients.
Men would come to her, kneel, and beg to be beaten, tortured, sodomized, and humiliated. Each had their own fantasies with their own nuances, but they all revolved around having a strong, attractive woman take control. It was damn good money, and she was damn good at it. Ritsuko was one of the few who knew about it (even Kaji never knew), and the only one she had ever told about how much she loved having men tremble at her feet, helpless and totally at her mercy. After graduating and finding work she could no longer use money as a justification to continue, and somewhat reluctantly called it quits.
Misato swallowed heavily. It was a part of her past that she had tried to move past and forget, and this conversation was bringing up some long-suppressed feelings. To her astonishment, she realized she was beginning to seriously consider the doctor’s proposal. Could I actually do that, she wondered.
“But… it would be so illegal. If I were to get caught-“
Ritsuko smirked, knowing then that she was winning the case for her plan. “Give up, Misato, you know just as I do that there isn’t one government worker in this whole prefecture who doesn’t answer to NERV. What are they going to do, arrest the operations director?”
“I could get fired, though! Commander Ikari-“
“Won’t give a damn if it makes the Third Child more reliable. Trust me. And you’re the one responsible for ensuring his wellbeing—it’s entirely your call to make, as insane as it may seem.” Ritsuko sighed. “I’m not asking you to destroy the boy’s spirit; if I’m right, he’ll take to it naturally and enthusiastically once you get over his token resistance. If he doesn’t, we’ll just abort the experiment and run damage control.”
“He’s a person, Ritsu, not a simulation.” Misato slumped over, cradling her head against the table. “This is so wrong. I can’t believe I’m even considering this.”
Ritsuko took a sip from her cup of tea. “Haven’t you figured it out, Misato? We’re fighting Angels. Right and wrong don’t mean a whole lot anymore.”
