LEVEL 1
The year 2022 was a breakthrough year. Mass Multiplayer games have made a huge leap in the past decade. Kazuto Kirigaya was sitting in his chair in front of his computer. The air condition kicked on blowing fresh air into the room. Kazuto turned a page in the latest Nerve Gear magazine. He was reading an article written about the founder and creator of nerve gear Akihiko Kayaba. Kayaba wasn't just the founder of nerve gear, he was also the designer of the very first Mass Multi-player online Role Player Game virtual Dive Sword art online.
A virtual dive was a new concept. Beforehand, MMOs were played by first person or third person avatars that would be controlled by a controller or keyboard and mouse. But over the past ten years Kayaba had made huge strides with game development and technology. He was the founder and main engineer of the company, and with the help of at least of a thousand other engineers and developers, nerve gear went from a concept idea to a reality. Nerve gear works by reading and interfering with brainwaves. It not only simulates sight and sound, it also simulates taste, smell and even touch. In other words, it can completely immerse players in a virtual world. However, its true potential lies within the fact that it doesn't just send virtual sensations to the user it intercepts and manipulates the signals sent by the user's brain. When using nerve gear, all the signals sent by the brain are blocked and processed so that they only effect the avatar in the virtual world. This immobilizes the users physical body so there is no risk of running into walls in the real world while playing in the virtual one.
Kazuto finished the article and turned another page, as he did so he felt a sing in his thumb, he looked at it and a small amount of blood appeared from the cut that was rendered. He looked at his thumb and stuck in his mouth to clean the blood. Before the games launch there was an announcement of a new game being developed, and the company was looking for testers to play the game and report all bugs that they may encounter. Kazuto had been one the lucky few that had been selected to participate in the beta that had been released months before the games release. The main purpose of the beta that they announced was to search for any bugs and glitches that may hinder the game's performance or so they advertised. Kazuto was looking through a science magazine and he noticed the article promoting the beta test and about how they were looking for testers for the new technology that was coming out. Nerve Gear. Kazuto did more research on the new founded technology and decided it would be interesting to see it first-hand. He filled out the paperwork online for the contest that would select people to participate.
It had been two weeks, since he applied. Kazuto felt as if he didn't win, then out of the blue there was an email reply, saying that he had been selected to be one of the ten thousand participants selected to partake in the testing. The email had stated that they would be mailing him the equipment, and gave specific instructions on what is roll in the beta was. The email said that he was supposed to play the game, get as far as he can and report any bugs or glitches that he found. When the gear came he read the instructions set everything up, created an account and logged in. When it came time to decide he was uncertain on what his avatar should be named. He had finally decided that he would just combine his first and last name, and he came up with Kirito. When the test was over and he submitted is findings of the game he got to keep all the equipment, and he would receive a free copy of the game on release day.
A voice came through the door. "I'm off to practice now see you later ok." It said. That was Suguha, his sister. She had always looked out for him, and he never truly understood why. He heard the footsteps get fainter as she left and eventually the sound of the front door opening and closing. When all was quiet he plugged the nerve gear helmet into the tower. The stillness was making everything worse, his excitement was almost overwhelming. He looked at his clock, 1255, just five more minutes and he would be able to enter the game. The virtual world was really the only place where he could feel like he was alive. The tower started up making a soft humming noise, the helmet lights started blinking then went to a solid color. When everything was complete and updated Kazuto laid down on his bed and put on the nerve gear. The helmet brought back the memories of the countless hours he spent playing the beta for that month. He looked at the time on the display 1259. His heart started to race again, 30 seconds, he was starting to plan-out what he would do first, 15 seconds, he closed his eyes and when he opened them again. Five, four, three, two, one. A smile came across his face, he closed his eyes and said out loud "link start."
A white light sounded him, eventually there wre different displays appearing before him. Touch ok, Sight ok, Hearing ok, Taste ok, Smell ok. Then language prompt appeared and he selected Japanese, followed by a log in screen appeared, his username and password were already saved. The only profile that was saved appeared, Kazuto selected his avatar Kirito and hit login. All of his stats from the beta had been reset. As he did so a huge sign appeared, WELCOME TO SWORDART ONLINE. When the sigh disappeared, a blinding light appeared again and he felt as if he were falling. For a second everything became fuzzy, he felt a little light headed but it passed almost instantly. His sight came to him blurred but evenly cleared up. When everything became clear he noticed that he was standing in the town square of the town of beginnings, a sight that he was all too familiar with. For a second he closed his eyes and took everything in, the smell the sounds. He could hear the shouts as the non-playable characters were shouting from their stands advertising their goods. The smells from the food venders was almost overwhelming. A cool breeze that came across his face. He took a deep breath, and opened his eyes. "Hello world I'm back." He said.
Kirito's avatar was the same as it was in the beta, five foot seven not too big but not small ether, long black hair and a young-looking face. There was so much to explore he didn't know where to start, so he started by look around scoping out the area. The company sent out messages saying that there would be new updates and content that would be added to the game after the beta had been concluded. He checked his guide that every player was issued. The new content included, new dungeons, new monsters, and the addition of an auction house. Kirito was curious because he had never seen or heard of the auction house. The guide read on to explain that the house was used for players to post an item at a certain price and other players would bid on that item. If it didn't reach the sellers price, then the buyer would have to raise the price on how much they were willing to spend on that item.
As Kirito stood next to the auction house he noticed hundreds if not thousands of flashing blue lights as players started to enter the game. He was amazed at how many players logged on for the release. Kirito started to walk, then jog, then into a full-blown sprint going from area to area, just to see if there were any changes from the beta. As he ran he saw more and more people logging in almost a flood of blue light. He turned the corner heading down an alley when a voice came from behind him. "Hey wait, wait up." The voice shouted. Kirito stopped and turned as a guy came running up and stopped in front of him. "Yea?" Kirito asked confused. The guy looked tired and bent over trying to catch his breath. "Sorry to bother you." He said in-between breaths. "You look like you know your way around. I'm new and I was wondering if you could help me out, give me some tips." He said finally. Kirito gave him a weird look. "I'm Klien, nice to meet you." Klien said before Kirito could reply. "Kirito." Kirito replied when he finished. "You want my help?" Kirito started.
"Yea weren't you one of those beta testers? I'm still learning, and I figured that it wouldn't hurt to get a jump start on the game if you know what I mean, besides I'm waiting on some friends to log on anyway." Klien said. Kirito looked away thinking is it really that obvious. He considered it for a second, and figured it couldn't hurt help him out seeing as though he was knowledgeable of how the game operates. "Ok follow me." Kirito said.
It didn't take very long for Kirito to get where he wanted to go. He knew exactly where to take Klien to show him the basics. The area was an open field that was one of the spots he had discovered when he logged on for the first time. A habit of Kirito's s when he logged onto a new game for the first time was to scout out an area of potential experience hunting spots.
When they got to the grassy plane Kirito felt as he was at home standing in the familiar spot he spent so many hours learning the ins and outs of the game. He stood there for a second taking in the scenery. He closed his eyes as a breeze came across his face. Even though it was virtual, he felt every sensation of it. The brisk chill, the breeze's sting on his skin, all of it felt real. He inhaled deep and said "were here." "We're where?" Klien asked. 'We're where I'm going to show you how to not be a noob." Kirito said with a half-smile. "Do you see that boar there, I want you to attack it." Kirito started.
Klien nervously drew his sword, he swallowed, hesitated and eventually charged the boar, screaming the entire way. The boar turned and watched the approach. Klien swung and missed, the boar started to run Klien gave pursuit shouting his war cry the entire way. Kirito watched the spectacle in disbelief, trying his hardest not to laugh. On Klien's fourth attempt at swinging and missing, the boar had enough, it turned and charged, the unsuspecting Klien who was trying to regain his balance from his last thrust, looked up at the last minute just in time to see the anime make contact right in his nether regions. Klien buckled instinctively grabbing his groin falling to the ground waiting for the tremendous amount of pain that was about to come. Kirito watched with a smile on his face, as Klien was on the ground rocking back and forth howling about the pain. "Um Klien, you do realize that you can't feel pain in the virtual world you just feel a little discomfort, that's how the game was designed." Kirito said. Klien immediately stopped rocking and stood up, realizing what he said was true. "Hey your right it doesn't hurt." Klien said sheepishly.
"So I don't understand why I wasn't making contact." Klien said eventually. "Every time I swung it never made contact, as if the boar was able to dodge easily." Klien complained. "It's all in the technique." Kirito started. "When you see your target, you activate a weapon skill and when you swing the system almost guaranties a hit." Kirito finished explaining. "Activate a weapons skill huh." Klien said out loud. After a second of thinking about it he picked up his sword and readied it again. The weapon started to glow followed by a soft humming. Kirito dashed at the nearest boar purposely missing it, the boar reared and started running, Kirito lunged again but this time herded it toward Klien. Klien gave a small smile and lunged. The sword struck its target dead center leaving a huge red streak across the boar's body. The boar shattered into a million shiny pieces that disintegrated in the air. Klien's facial expression went from serious to happy almost instantly. "Yes I did it." Klien said while simultaneously jumping in the air in triumph. "See nothing to it, prepare and use weapon skill." Kirito said. "How was that?" Klien asked. "Not bad for a level one monster." Kirito said in reply. Klien's excitement died. "Level one, I thought that was a level forty boss." Klien replied. Kirito gave a small chuckle. "As if, alright let's keep going." Kirito finally said.
As time passed Klien became more and more proficient. "This is amazing, I can't believe how real this is. It is way beyond anything I could have ever imagined." Kline said. "Yea its addictive, all senses are active even the feeling of needing to eat. Even though your mind is told it's satisfied when you eat in the game, your body is still in stasis." Kirito replied. "Speaking of which I don't have to worry about that, I have a chicken teriyaki pizza that's ordered to be delivered at 1700 in fifteen minutes." Klien said. Klien readied his weapon and took one final lunge at another boar killing it instantly. "Well I'm heading out, pizza delivery guy should be there any minute. I really appreciate the help." Klien said. Kirito nodded, and watched Klien make a hand movement, it was awkward to watch but he knew what he was doing. With a swipe down of the right hand, the movement would bring up the main menu. At least they kept that the same. Kirito thought.
As he turned and walked away he heard Klien say. "That's weird." Out of curiosity Kirito stopped and turned around and replied "what's weird?" "There is no log out button." Klien replied. "It's at the bottom of the logout option in the main menu." Kirito said. "I know but it's not there." Klien replied. Kirito swiped his hand down to open up the menu, he selected the bottom option, and sure enough there was no logout option. "That is weird." Kirito said out loud. Kirito noticed Klien hitting the blank space where the log out button should be. "There has to be a way out." Klien finally said. "Why don't you contact the admin, there is bound to be some bugs with the system especially since today was the first day of the launch." Kirito said. "I tried and there was no answer, maybe they are freaking out right now. Scrambling to fix the issue." Klien said with a nervous smile.
As Klien finished speaking Kirito noticed the time at the top of his view. "Well the admins better hurry cause check out the time." Kirito said in a partially teasing manner. Klien slightly looked up and started freaking out. "OH KNOW MY CHICKEN TERIYAKI PIZZA." Klien shouted. Klien frantically started pressing the empty log out space. "Is there any way to log out besides the logout button?" Klien asked. "No, none that I can think of." Kirito replied. "What if I can take off this helmet?" Klien asked in response as he was making a motion to take the nerve gear off. "It won't work, when you dive, the helmet cuts off all connection from your brain to your body, all signals that your brain sends to move your body is filtered through the nerve gear and that's what makes your avatar move." Kirito replied. "Well what if the helmet was unplugged, wouldn't that automatically log you out?" Klien asked. "No, the nerve gear has an internal battery, so even if it were to be unplugged the headgear would continue to run for hours."
Klien stood there dumbfounded, Kirito guessed he was in complete shock but he couldn't be sure, he just stood there. The sun was starting to set, and even though there were issues, Kirito couldn't help but appreciate the realism and the hard work that the engineers put in the game. As Kirito came back to his senses, a loud bell chimed. "What is that?" Klien asked. Before Kirito was able to reply he was engulfed by a blue light. The next thing he knew he was in the town of beginnings again, in the town square. As he looked around Klien was nowhere to be seen, but there were thousands of blue lights appearing as players were being teleported to the area. There was nothing but confusion throughout the populous. People were asking what was going on. Complaining how they were in the middle of a quest, and that they would have to start over, due to the interruption
Amidst the confusion the bell continued to chime over and over. The chime wasn't the most nerve racking part, it was when the bell stopped chiming. As the last chime hit the entire sky started to blink red. Squares covered the sky with the word ALERT in the center. The blinking sky turned a solid color of red. Then in the cracks of the squares a liquid started leaking, small at first but then it started to flood. The liquid never touched the ground, it stopped hundreds of feet in the air above the players. The liquid looked as if it were filling a huge glass. Kirito noticed that the liquid didn't look like water, but more like blood.
The liquid didn't move as it should, it has an awkward movement to it, almost as if it had a mind of its own. It started moving frantically at first, then it started to mold into a shape. When the shape was fully formed it made a gigantic person robbed from head to toe. The figure had no face, the hood covered it, only darkness filled the void. The thing before them raised its gloved hands, and it spoke. "I am Kayaba Akihiko, I am the creator of Sword Art Online. I welcome you all to my world. As you may have noticed by now there is something missing from all of your menus. This is no mistake, no glitch in the system. It was purposely left out." The creature said. "At launch the system was designed to have no log out button. With that being said there is no way of logging out of the game." It continued. "The only way to log out of the game is to beat all 100 levels and completing the game. Lastly death in the game does not force you to log out. If you die in the game you die in real life, if by chance a player were to die in the game, or if the nerve gear is tried to remove from your head from the outside world, an electronic device in your nerve gear will short which will send a current directly to you your brain instantly killing you. In lame-ins term the current will fry your brain.
There has been over 12,000 players that unknowingly tested this theory so far and paid the price, the media has been covering the deaths round the clock." It continued. Kirito saw the screens that appeared around the figure showing the various news networks that were covering the tragedies. The figure shifted and continued, "Oh and one more thing, I have a gift. Within everyone's inventory there is an item open it and have look." The figure said. Kirito swiped his hand down as he noticed many other players simultaneously do, and clicked on the item bar in the menu. Kirito found the item and clicked on it. "A mirror." He said out loud.
The object appeared out of thin air, and landed in Kirito's hands. He looked at it seeing his avatar's reflection, then once again almost instantly he was engulfed in a blue light. When the blinding light disappeared, Kirito opened his eyes and looked in the mirror again and instead of his avatar reflection he didn't see anyone in the mirror except himself, his real self. In shock Kirito took a step back bumping into someone by accident, the mirror dropped and shattered into millions of blue shards. He turned around and saw a stranger, he had never seen before, but even though he was a stranger he looked familiar, like someone who he could have seen in a distant memory but didn't recognize. "Is that you Kirito?" the stranger asked. "Klien." Kirito replied almost out of shock. Before Kline could say anything the huge figure started speaking again. "This is the official launch of Sword Art Online I wish everyone luck."
When the voice finished it started to melt away. A black smoke came out of the crevises between the robe and the gloved hands, and the once black void where its face should have been disappeared in a black mist. Something within Kirito snapped, he grabbed Klien's arm almost violently and pulled him as he forced his way through the crowd. "Common Klien." Kirito said. Pushing through the crowd, they finally were in the clear. He pulled Klien to the next alley away from prying ears he stood there and saw the confusion on his face. "Ok look I'm heading for the next town, and going to try and level along the way. I'm familiar with the routs, so I can take us the safest routs without much trouble, even at level one." Kirito explained. Klien gave a worried expression. "Look I appreciate your concern, I really do but I have friends that are probably looking for me, I just can't bail on them." Klien replied. Kirito thought about it. If it were just Klien it wouldn't be an issue, but two more, even one more. Klien noticed the concern on Kirito's face. "It's alright, I couldn't ask a guy I just met to help like that." Klien said. Kirito caught the hint that he didn't want to impose, he wanted to interject, but he didn't have the time to debate with him. "If you need anything message me." Kirito said. "I will." He replied. Kirito shook his hand and started running. He felt his heart beat faster and faster with every step. To survive I have to get stronger, and I have to survive no matter what. He thought to himself.
As he exited the town of beginnings, the sun had already set, and darkness had set in. All Kirito could think about was how he was going to survive. What he needed to do and how he needed to do it. As he followed the road he saw red eyes appear in the darkness, first one pair, then two, then three. Kirito guest there was a total of five monsters ahead. As he approached he saw shapes take form with the eyes. Fur appeared with snarling teeth as he approached. Kirito drew his sword, and readied his weapon skill. The first two beasts went down without issue. The third lunged. Kirito sidestepped striking the beast on the side. He stopped his attack just long enough to take a look at the beast, it was a pack of wolves that descended upon him. He was almost caught off guard by the fourth, but was able to dodge its attack and strike it on its underbelly. He broke into a sprint again slashing the final wolf. All the beasts shattered into tiny shiny shards. As he picked up the pace again a sign appeared saying Congratulations Rank 2 Achieved.
