Aspirations
Chapter 16
"I'm sorry, but I can accept this."
You stared at the genius animal, dumbfounded. He slid the resignation letter you had typed up this morning back towards you. Was he allowed to even do that?
"Sir, with all due respect, I don't think you can reject it."
"But I have," he said in a slightly chipper kind of tone. "If I let any of my staff resign after a misunderstanding, U.A would have closed down long ago."
"It's not over a misunderstanding. I am not fit nor qualified for this job," you insisted.
It wasn't that you liked putting yourself down. Nor did you really believe that, if you had been given a real chance, you couldn't improve. It was just that you wanted Principal Nezu to let you resign gracefully. You wanted no faults or blame to be placed. Sure you had been pissed with Aizawa and still kind of were but he had reasons points. He'd been acting in a way he thought best suited the law. You just didn't agree with him; nor did you believe that all the laws were just and fair in every circumstance.
"Nonsense," Principal Nezu said as he jumped off of his chair. He walked around the desk to stand in front of you. "You're uniquely qualified for the position."
"Please don't placate me sir," you requested as you clenched your teeth. "I generally can't stand undue nepotism."
"This is not anything of the sort," the white Chimera tried to assure you. "May I sit on your lap? It's quite cold down here."
Odd and awkward but you nodded in agreement. You reached down for him to lift him up. Nezu allowed you to place him in your lap. Once he was there you had the very sharp urge to just let him. His fur looked so silky smooth it was like a siren's song to your fingers. Before he even started talking again, you had to stop yourself from petting his head.
"This is much better. Your lap is quite warm and cozy."
"Thank you?"
"You're welcome. As I was saying, I do not accept your resignation. Nor did I appoint you to this position because you had no merit of your own. You have many qualities that I desire in my staff - precision and confidence in your own quirk, adaptable thinking, courage, selflessness, and a drive to challenge all the preconceptions of what is acceptable to do when it comes to people's welfare. Unfortunately that's where this whole misunderstanding comes from."
You stayed quiet as Nezu paused. He sure had a long way to say "no". The praise felt good but also a little odd. You were waiting for the other shoe to drop. Somehow you had a sinking feeling that you were going to be in trouble for following through on all those qualities. That feeling wasn't exactly conducive to making you want to stay either; getting in trouble was something that generally shouldn't happen to adults. At least not without serious legal repercussions. Otherwise it was like someone else other than the law was in charge of your life, like you were a kid again. Not something you favored.
"I've heard that you're helping Toshinori. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that he's considering his own health enough to let you help him. And I understand that you want to help everyone. In some ways you're no different than all the great Pro-Heroes I've met. You just need to consider the repercussions of your actions a bit more."
"Like healthier heroes doing their job more effectively? Saving more people?"
Oops. You hadn't meant to ask that question aloud. Oh well. Too late to take it back now.
"If you're constantly taking away the consequences, some students...may gain the false impression that there are no repercussions after allowing themselves to sustain damage. This could promote recklessness. Which is not a trait I want our students to leave here with."
Well that you understood. You tried to school your expression but you weren't great at hiding the awkward acceptance of his words. Though as he wasn't face to face with you, you could at least pretend he didn't notice.
"After all you can't be everywhere all at the same time. And even if you were in the right place at the right time like you were for Endeavor there might be a time when you are in no condition to help. You know the limits of your quirk and abilities better than I do. Can you, with all certainty, say that you can continue at your current pace indefinitely?"
"...no."
Between helping Toshinori, Aizawa, and Endeavour in such a short span you were dangerously close to malnutrition and exhaustion. You could still do a couple of tricks, such as remove lactic acid from fatigued muscles, but full reconstruction of anything else for at least a week was out. Even so you were glad you had the chance to mend Endeavor's eye and lip; you hadn't gotten to the massive scar that would have formed but everything at least functioned.
"This is precisely why you need to reign in your natural urge to help people. I won't tell you not to help those who absolutely need it. That would be silly of me. I just want you to think about what happens in the long run. I can assure you that there will be plenty more injuries for you to attend to in the days to come."
His words had an ominous feel to them. You weren't sure if he was talking about the normal wounds students got while training to be heroes or if he was hinting at something darker in the future. Though Endeavor had triumphed against the dark monster this time you had seen how quickly people had started to panic. The repercussions over the loss of the pro-hero All Might were still being felt. With Nezu's words you got a bad feeling that it wasn't going to get any better for a long time. If it ever got better.
"And you need to consider when you help somehow how that could appear in the media. As a principal of this fine establishment, as much as I would love to have full transparency with the media, we need to consider what might happen if villains find out what you can do."
The thought did not make you feel any better. It made the pit of guilt and apprehension fill with a personal kind of fear. Nezu nodded as he spoke, making a certain kind of humming sound that let you know he was considering something.
"Recovery Girl can heal most wounds instantly, something I can't do, and everyone knows about her but she's not a target."
"This is true. You'll forgive me for being indelicate, but she has gotten up there in years. Her experience and knowledge are a great asset to this school in tandem with her quirk. Meanwhile, you are still young. You are still expanding the limits of your quirk and you're already able to do things that Recovery Girl has never been able to do. You're able to heal things more efficiently than the human body could do naturally! You can even correct injuries well after they've healed! It's quite amazing when you think of it. I expect a lot of people would covet this ability, a lot of people with nefarious purposes."
When he put it like that...
And the look of grudging, uncomfortable acceptance was back. Nezu slipped off of your lap with his cute fuzzy paws behind his back.
"Well, I think you understand our concerns now. And I've given you a lot to consider. So why don't you take the day off and go enjoy yourself? We'll say no more about this letter."
You started to stand up as he dismissed you but you stopped. You turned back to look as Principal Nezu climbed up onto his chair to grab at your resignation level. From the sounds of it as he lowered it into an unseen area, he shredded the entire thing.
"Sir, can I make a few requests?"
"And what would those be?"
"I understand the concerns about overextending myself. But I know my limits. I can feel the change in my body when I get close, you guys can't. I think I understand the concerns about exposing what I can do...I mean I'm not used to being in as big of a spotlight as U.A has gotten recently but I'll try to keep a lower profile," you started off, taking a breath and letting it out. "But! You hired me to help make the first year students more aware of hero support systems. So far there hasn't been time to do that. Between their regular classes, provisional hero licenses, the work studies and the safety programs, their homework and you know...daily lives...there's been no time to teach them anything much less show them anything beyond that first day I met them all."
"I see. So what's your request?"
"The school needs to consider shifting its priorities for the Hero and Support course students, at least as much as it can within the scope of the education system. I know that a lot of the programs have been accelerated due to the demand but the school hasn't really changed to reflect that. If the main goal is to produce Heroes that are ready to take on the challenge of their work, what good are the superfluous classes going to do them?"
You paused right there as you continued to make eye contact with the Principal. What you were doing was risky considering that you were, technically, criticizing the way he ran his school. In a way though, you were doing what you were hired to do. You were trying to look out for the students and hopefully find a way to prepare them for the future. You continued to speak towards him.
"I'm not saying that it's not important to learn but producing a scholar who can go on to win the Nobel peace prize, fields medal, or something like that isn't going to help them protect society. Theoretical Maths and Sciences, Classical Literature, even English really — none of these classes matter for the majority of the students. Bakugou already predicts the right angles and force needed for his attacks, Yaoyorozu already researches chemical and atomic compositions on her own time...they don't need facts being shoved down their throat during the day. They need practice. They need to learn how to fight back and how to protect others far more than they are ever going to need to know how to comprehend classical stories. Yet there's not one self defense class. No one has trained them with non-lethal weapons. They need to be taught their trade far more than they will need higher education at this point. And if this is happening in the Hero course I presume it's also an issue in the support course."
"You're asking for a radical shift in the educational system."
You nodded with a worried look on your face. You knew you'd just spoke out a good amount. Especially when the topic was as tricky as it was. Even though this school was supposed to be a Hero school it was still under the department of education. U.A was also adherent to the Hero Public Safety Commission. Which meant that they needed to find a good compromise between the two. You just felt that, in light of all the events, they leaned too far into the academic education while overloading the kids with the requests from the Hero Public Safety Commission.
"I'm asking you to seriously consider decreasing the frequency of non-essential classes while increasing and adding classes that are applicable to their futures as Heroes. You could add optional martial arts classes, hire a couple maids and chefs to take care of all the dorms, and do away with homework entirely so that they can focus on the aspects that are really going to matter. At least for the students that are already acting as heroes."
Nezu nodded his head with a thoughtful look over his animalistic face. "I will consider it."
"I have two more requests," you spoke out. You might as well just ask considering the fact that you'd said so much already. "I'd like to work on an integration program between the Support students and the Hero course students. It's their future to work together, even if the Support students are more behind the scenes."
"That's more easily done. What was the other request?"
"I know how you went to great lengths to make that room perfect for me. And I do love it so I'm not asking to be moved or anything. But if it's possible I would like to switch my focus to Class 1B during the daytime and work with Class 1A after school is out."
Nezu seemed surprised. You didn't blame him. This request probably seemed to come out of nowhere. But after last night you really didn't feel like working with Aizawa was going to benefit anyone. Especially if he kept undermining what you wanted to do and by doing so making you feel like a child. You were supposed to be responsible for the kids' health, education, and future just like him. You didn't need to be coddled or receive a slap on the hand anytime you made a choice.
"I see. I'll speak with the new hire in class 1B to see if they're amenable to the switch."
"Thank you."
